Jessica Flatequal dies at age 46 Director of MNSU LGBT Center died Tuesday MADISON DIEMERT NEWS EDITOR Jessica Flatequal, Director of the Minnesota State University, Mankato LGBT Center died this Tuesday of liver failure, according to her Caring Bridge post. Flatequal also stated in the post that because of her liver disease, her kidneys were also failing.

Also according to her Caring Bridge post, she was admitted to the Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Sunday, January 13. “I’m a fighter. My life has always been about challenging the status quo. Nothing about my will-power, my zest for life, my sense of humor and compassion for others has changed,” she stated in the post, “In actuality, I think they have become even more

Student Government results are in!

MADISON DIEMERT NEWS EDITOR This year’s Student Government election ran Tuesday, April 9 with the results ready the same day.

To replace the current Student Government President and Vice President is Anisa Omar and Andrew Trenne respectively, of Empowering Mavericks.

Omar and Trenne won with a total of 1044 votes. Kayla Erickson and Logan Dalk of Mavericks: United as One, ran beside them, accumulating 466 votes. There were also two write-in candidates, Lindsay Leonard and Nick Krekelberg, who brought in 36 votes.

Turning Point USA brings immigration debate to Mankato

MICHAEL MCSHANE STAFF WRITER Minnesota State University, Mankato’s newly created chapter of the conservative advocacy group, Turning Point USA, produced its first event on campus. TPUSA representative and frequent Fox News commentator, Anna Paulina, spoke at the event.

The event, titled “Immigration in Modern America” was to talk about the issue of illegal immigration rather than immigration in general.

Paulina, an Air Force veteran, has been involved in the debate on illegal immigration since she was a part of the non-profit organization, Veterans for Child Rescue, which saves children who have been trafficked across the U.S. Mexico border. It was through this organization that Paulina saw how serious of an issue sex trafficking has become.

Paulina tells the story of a

woman named Karla Jacinto, a victim of sex trafficking who was raped over 43,000 times over a four-year timespan.

Jacinto was rescued and has since become an advocate for the end to the sex trafficking of women and children.

She continued to speak on illegal immigration and how the problem of sex trafficking justifies the family separation policy.

The family separation policy that the Trump Administration has pushed during President Donald Trump’s presidency has been criticized by Democrats and liberal commentators as being inherently cruel to incoming immigrants.

Paulina sees it differently as she believes the possibility of migrant children coming into the country with potential sex traffickers makes the policy worth it in the long run.

“I would much rather have a child temporarily separated from someone that’s claiming to be their father, mother, whatever it might be, and be able to determine biologically if they’re related instead of delivering them into the very hands that would exploit them,” Paulina said.

Paulina, whose grandparents immigrated from Mexico themselves, supports legal immigration and has other members of her family in Mexico trying to get their own visas, but are experiencing difficulties because of backlogged courts due to the border crisis.

Speaking to the crowd, some adorned with the wellknown, red “Make America Great Again” hats, popular among Trump supporters.

Paulina maintained during her speech that TPUSA was not affiliated with any political party, but rather conservative ideals.

After the speech, Paulina opened the floor for people to ask her questions on the subject. It didn’t take long for a line to manifest.

International students visit to learn more about city of Mankato MANKATO - Students from Pakistan met with Mayor Najwa Massad and Deputy City Manager Alison Zelms to learn more about the city of Mankato. Here to study for a semester at Minnesota State University, Mankato through the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program in Pakistan, engineering students Faisal, Irfana, Faraz and biochemistry student Usama had an opportunity to learn what Massad appreciated about the community.

Massad shared that Mankato is a good place to be and there are many opportunities.

Zelms discussed how the city followed a councilmanager handles day-to-day city administration and the

council serves as the policy makers who are voted to serve Mankato constituents.

Students shared Mankato was much like home, appreciated access to nature and people were very friendly and helpful. Faisal already had insight into one of Mankato’s services-wastewater treatment. He had done a report comparing Mankato’s system to some international communities, including Cairo, Egypt. He noted that Mankato was highly-ranked in wastewater treatment and that the underground camera technology was a strong assets to help identify and stay in front of problems and opportunities.

The recent Student Fee Referendum also passed.

715 students voted yes, 699 voted no and 304 abstained.

It passed by 16 votes. The Referendum passed a 4.9% increase to the Student Activity Fee. This means that the fee increased from $8.36 per credit hour to $8.77.

In total, over 1,700 students voted out of the 15,000 who attend MNSU.

Although the unemployment rate is down to 3.7 percent, many college students, depending on their majors, face hardship as they struggle to land themselves a job in their industry.

Namidu De Silva, a junior studying geology at Minnesota State University, Mankato, fears his lack of experience and his status as an international student will harm his chances of getting a job after graduation.

De Silva said, “It’s basically based on how much experience you have. And so, after graduating people look at the amount of experience you get. You get experience by getting internships, co-ops, working part time.

It’s kind of a cycle situation going on where sometimes the more experience you already have the more likely the people are to hire you, so

it’s a lot of competition going on, being an international it’s even harder.”

Pooja Gurung, who is also an international student at MNSU and a junior studying psychology, agrees as she commented, “The process becomes a lot more complicated when internationals are involved, hence, a lot of companies hesitate to hire us which is completely understandable.

It costs a lot of money and is a very time-consuming process.”

Gurung explained, “How it works is that international

students have to apply for OPT (Optional Practical Training) which is kind of like a work permit and usually lasts for three years. Some companies might agree to sponsor you, so basically, they’re going to do all of your paperwork to get your green card or work permit or citizenship, and so on. But that’s really difficult to get by because it’s very expensive and time consuming to sponsor an international so most companies try to stay away from that. It’s very difficult for me, especially as a psychology major. One of my

Davenport also stated that the Counseling Center is always open to students

who need help during this hard time. He also said the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is available for faculty and staff, as well.

There is a picture of Flatequal and a poster that read, “REST IN POWER JESS” in front of the LGBT Center that students can sign to leave messages of support and love. Students who knew Flatequal are encouraged to share their messages on the poster.

“Jessica showed me that it is always okay to express your beautiful self,” said one student. Another student said that she was an inspiration to all, “and not just in the queer community. She impacted many lives and will always be missed.”

Jessica Flatequal’s Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, 1p.m. at the Verizon Center, according to Wednesday’s Student Government meeting.

Another question asked if decriminalizing drugs would help alleviate the problem of illegal immigration.

Paulina immediately took this question to heart and strongly believed the decriminalization of drugs would trade one issue with

22 PUSH-UPS A DAY CHALLENGE In an effort to raise awareness for veterans’ issues, specifically suicide, members of the Minnesota State University, Mankato Veterans Club will do 22 puchups every day of Veterans Week (April 16-20) at 12:00 p.m. near the fountain on the Minnesota State Mankato campus mall.

The Veterans Club invites the Mankato-area community to come to campus and do pushups every day along with them, regardless of one’s ability to complete 22 pushups.

The club chose 22 pushups to raise awareness of the 22 veterans who commit suicide daily, a figure that comes from a 2012 data report issued by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

MARIA LY STAFF WRITER Minnesota State University, Mankato has a tobacco free policy, but fails to enforce this policy as students still smoke on campus property.

According to the Minnesota State University, Mankato website, it states, “Minnesota State University, Mankato prohibits smoking, tobacco use, electronic delivery devise use, and tobacco sale (including the use or sale of smokeless tobacco products and electronic delivery device products) on property or in vehicles it owns, operates or leases. This policy applies to all students, employees, visitors, or any person on University property.”

Although MNSU has a tobacco free policy, many students still manage to smoke. Why is that?

The reason why the tobacco free policy isn’t strict is because the policy is student enforced. There are no faculty, staff, or security officers who enforce the policy on campus. The question now is: should the smoking

policy be transferred to make it enforced by authority on campus to make the policy stricter?

Personally, I’m on the fence on whether or not we should keep tobacco policies the way it is due to cultural and financial barriers. On the other hand, I also do not appreciate the second-hand smoke going into my lungs when I simply go through the library entrance.

When walking through campus, one could see people smoking outside of the library. One may see someone discreetly vaping as they walk to class. One could see someone vaping inside in the library or CSU, using their

jacket to hide the smoke.

One could walk down the sidewalks and see the grass littered in cigarette butts.

Smoking has become such a normalized thing on campus, and taking it away could be totally ineffective.

Smoking also comes with many cultural aspects. Some students in certain cultures may be socialized into smoking. Smoking is also addictive, and if the tobacco policy becomes stricter, students may still find a way to smoke on campus. Are there more beneficial ways to help students who currently smoke?

I personally think, maybe having designated areas

outside on campus where smoking is allowed could be a good alternative rather than getting rid of smoking altogether. It could be located in discrete areas where there is less traffic. That way, a student like me who hates second hand smoke could avoid those situations, and the people who do smoke can still have the areas where they can.

I personally do not like smoking or tobacco, but thinking about the campus as a whole, I am not sure if getting rid of smoking altogether would be practical or beneficial.

Stephanie Schriock calls for “Diversity of voices” in Congress

JOSHUA SCHUETZ STAFF WRITER I’ve recently embarked on a series of articles discussing American jobs and wages.

Today’s topic is, appropriately enough, wage growth.

The American economy is still creating jobs at a good clip, as evidenced by March’s jobs numbers. February’s inferior numbers in this regard were rightly attributed to the government shutdown.

But the question remains: why, in a tight labor market, is America’s wage growth so slow? Workers received only a four cent raise in March, on average.

There are a few reasons for this. For one, baby boomers are retiring in droves. They, being older and more experienced, make more money on average, leading to wage growth declining in their absence.

The economy may be bringing workers previously deemed unemployable into the workforce, a good thing to be sure. Their wages, as one might expect, are likely to be lower, on average.

Immigration may also explain some of the seemingly sluggish growth, as many immigrants take lower-skilled jobs or start businesses that take a while to get off the road.

All of that is fine, but there may be a more sinister reason: American workers don’t have the kind of representation at the bargaining table that they once did. Some workers are unionizing and organizing in other ways to reverse this trend, which is to be celebrated.

The women running are authentic with their own unique stories; they are embracing who they are, and as a result, voters are embracing them,” said Stephanie Schriock, during her Lecture at the 14th Annual Carl Ortman Perkins Lecture Wednesday night.

Stephanie Schriock, an MNSU alumna and President of the political action committee, Emily’s List, made the journey to Mankato despite the challenging April snowstorm. The Women’s Center and Gender and Women’s Studies Department hosted the lecture from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Centennial Student Union Ballroom.

The women being referenced in the above quote are the women who procured a historic number of seats in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the November congressional election.

Schriock went on to discuss the increase in voter turnout by women, particularly women of color, who casted their ballots in record breaking numbers the last election. Many of whom were voting for the very first time.

“The challenging part of my job is that politics can be so divisive, and it can be hard to keep your chin up when things get nasty, especially online and with social media. We need to learn to recognize that we’re all American people, wanting opportunities and change within our country,” said Schriock.

dedicated to establishing democratic pro-choice women in office.

However, Schriock discussed the need for a difference of opinions in government. The discussion showcased the diversity of our newly elected congress, and the different perspectives they can bring to the table.

“Culturally, a lot of women have it in their heads that women should not run for office, but it’s the diversity of professions that we need now more than ever. We need nurses, pediatricians and teachers. We need people with different opinions that are willing to learn and listen; those two skills are what make for a great public servant.”

Other topics Schriock addressed were safety concerns with women candidates, and family planning options for women while running for election.

Schriock hopes to balance the scales more evenly with equal number of men and women candidates in upcoming elections, and even hopes to embrace more individuals

who may not conform to stereotypical gender norms.

“There’s going to be a huge culture change happening within our government and with our elected officials,” said Schriock. “The best part

of my job is the fact that I get to walk into my office with extraordinary women who are committed to change. I can honestly say that I have the best job in this country.”

Theatre Department’s “Hunchback of Notre Dame” delivers bone-chilling performances

JENNA PETERSON STAFF WRITER On Tuesday, I was able to attend a soft opening of the production, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” by the Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Department of Theatre and Dance in the Ted Paul Theatre at the Earley Center for the Performing Arts. For “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, music is written by Alan Menken, lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and book is by Peter Parnell, with the original book by Victor Hugo.

The director for the Mankato production is chair of the department Paul Hustoles.

The musical is set in 15th-century Paris, with Quasimodo (Billy Gleason), a bell ringer with a deformed spine, Dom Claude Frollo,

his caretaker, and Esmeralda (Delanie Wiesdrich), a traveling gypsy, being three of the main characters. Quasimodo

has spent his whole life in the bell room in the church that Dom Claude Frollo is a priest in. He has been conditioned

to believe that because of his deformity he would never be seen as beautiful and everyone in the outside

Winter is coming one last time in the final season of “Game of Thrones”

ALYSSA BUNDE STAFF WRITER Winter is here and with it, it brought season eight of Game of Thrones. This highly anticipated series has been around since 2011 and has only gained more traction since then.

The upcoming season has been thoroughly hyped up and fans are exceptionally curious, including Jimmy Fallon. According to Vanity Fair, during an episode on The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon begged GOT star Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, for any plot details. Williams expressed how sad the final shooting days were. As she continues, she accidently tells the crowd that Arya dies in the second episode.

The audience was hushed as Williams trembled in an obvious state of disbelief that she had just let a huge spoiler slip. Williams ran off stage and Fallon followed. In

seconds the pair reappeared and yelled “April Fools!”

Other cast members have also been tight lipped about the upcoming season.

However, they have released hints. Sophie Turner, A.K.A

Sansa Stark, told 1883 Magazine “this season is bloodier than ever. It’s full of betrayal, full of wat, full of danger.”

Emilia Clarke, actor for Daenerys Targaryen, told Vanity Fair, Daenerys’ final

scene “f—ed me up. Knowing that is going to be a lasting flavor in someone’s mouth of what Daenerys is…”

Season seven ended in 2017 and has left fans

waiting two years for season eights premier, according to Radio Times. The final season of Game of Thrones will include six episodes, with time spans ranging from 54 minutes to almost an hour and a half.

Minnesota State University, Mankato, student Samuel Duffour expressed his excitement, “I’m so ready for it… winter is coming!”

However, some fans are over the strong publicity GOT has been receiving.

Ahnaf Sharar stated he is, “very excited, but at the same time bothered by listening to people talk about it all day.”

According to The Verge, the premiere of season seven had 10.1 million viewers tune into the live broadcast.

Season seven left viewers on the edge of their seats and it is a valid assumption that this last season will have as many, if not more, viewers.

According to HBO, you can catch the season premiere Sunday. The show will air at 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on HBO.

K-pop group BLACKPINK breaks YouTube records, foretells the future of music

MARK REYNOLDS STAFF WRITER K-Pop group BLACKPINK broke several YouTube Records when they released their single “Kill This Love” on April 4.

“Kill This Love,” the first single off their new EP, debuted on YouTube Premiere, a service that allows artists to release a pre-recorded video that people can watch together live. The song peaked at 979,000 concurrent viewers and reached 56.7 million total views in its first 24 hours.

This surpassed the previous record-holder, Ariana Grande, whose single “thank

u, next” had 829,000 concurrent viewers and 46 million views in the first 24 hours.

While the song itself has received mixed reviews, with some people saying that the song feels dull or underwhelming, there’s no denying its success. And a big part of that is due to how it was released.

YouTube Premiere is a prime example of the evolution of the internet. It combines the ease of access that the internet provides with the sense of community that you might get from going to a movie theater or a concert.

It creates a sense of community.

But live streaming is nothing new. Twitch.tv, a video-game focused streaming website, has been growing for many years, reaching 15 million daily active users as of May 2018. Facebook, Instagram and YouTube have all adopted live streaming as

well.

YouTube Premiere, however, has the benefit of being pre-recorded. This saves the creators the effort of committing to a live show, making it closer to a TV broadcast than

a live stream, while still retaining the live chat features.

Interacting with like-minded people in real time creates powerful bonds. When Facebook released their live service, founder Mark Zucker-

This personal connection is something that many people long for in an era where many of us have been separated from social situations because of the internet. And it makes sense that the music industry would want to do whatever they can to make more connections with and between fans.

In fact, Coachella has been streaming the festival to YouTube for nine years. This year, Childish Gambino will premiere his new film “Guava Island,” co-starring Rihanna, during the stream. More filmmakers are sure to follow in his footsteps.

YouTube’s data shows that “on average, when a creator premieres an upload it is more likely to perform better in terms of views compared to uploading normally.” So, it’s not surprising that almost every top pop star is using the feature.

It’s clear that the internet is changing everything about music: from how we consume it, to how we create and share it. It seems that after such removal from physical media, like CDs, Vinyl and live music, people are searching for ways to reconnect. And in an over-crowded world, finding a community is becoming more important than ever.

OLUWATOMIKE BALI STAFF WRITER As part of the sexual assault awareness month, the LGBT Center and VARP hosted an event called “It happens to us too”. The purpose of this event is to shed more light and raise awareness on domestic violence and sexual assault in the LGBTQ community.

Nicole Engel, who works with the anti-violence section of OutFront Minnesota, moderated the event. OutFront Minnesota is an agency focused on leading Minnesota toward LGBTQ equality.

Engel started out by showing a music video talking about domestic violence in relationships, the video portrayed a different scenario contrary to popular belief.

The video portrayed a man being the victim in a heterosexual relationship and a more feminine woman as the perpetrator of violence among same sex couple.

Engel also talked about common myths about LGBTQ violence & abuse.

“There are no laws against sexual assault between two women or men. Men folks are never survivors and feminine folks are never perpetrators. If two women or men are violent with one another, it’s fighting and not abuse,”

said Engel. She called these all “myths” because domestic violence happens in the LGBTQ community at the same rate as heterosexual relationships. About one in four people will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime.

Relationship abuse isn’t always physical. Engel said, “Abusers generally use the same tools to gain power and control in a relationship, and the LGBTQ community has extra tools like homophobia, transphobia or biphobia to leverage abuse against their partners.”

There is also the problem

of “who’s abusing who” as most domestic violence agencies do not have a comprehensive screening process. Most times in mainstream agencies, it can be tricky to identify who the victim is because it is not uncommon for the perpetrators of the abuse to call seeking services acting like the victim. However, Engel stated that her agency has been able to come up with a lot of screening tools, looking out for red flags to identify who the real victim is.

She also talked about other barriers to using the service available is fear of

outing yourself to the community, fear of homophobic, or transphobic responses from service providers. Most agencies are more focused on domestic violence among heterosexual relationship.

She said there is a fear of having to educate those who they reach out to.

There are also not enough domestic violence shelter homes for men in Minnesota.

There is only one agency in the state of Minnesota that takes male victims.

To conclude, Engel talked about sexual assault in the LGTBQ community.

Continued from page 12 world would make fun of him. During the Festival of Fools, gypsies come into the city and celebrate everything imaginable; they dance, they sing, and they spread joy. Esmeralda comes in and gives a dance performance and sees Quasimodo hunched over and watching. She grabs him by the arm and dances with him; everyone celebrating sees his face and believes that he is ugly, but Esmeralda sees the beauty within him and quickly becomes friends with him.

The cast and crew did an outstanding job telling this classic story to the audience; the gypsy costumes were bright and colorful, the

30-person chorus sang with purpose, the set was built with thought and character, and everyone involved gave everything they had into this show. Many of the characters brought in their own light humor within the script, which made the production even more pleasant for the audience.

The vocals throughout the show were articulated and sent chills throughout the body; this type of energy didn’t stop after intermission.

All of the work from the cast and crew left the audience in a fit of cheering, which was heard after each song.

The show brings light to social issues that are still

being dealt with in today’s society. The other gypsies would judge Quasimodo based on his looks and his spine, and people still judge others based on looks today.

Although this production is seen as a kid’s production, teenagers and adults can still convey the message to not judge people based on their looks, but to get to know the person for who they are.

“The Hunchback of Notre Dame” opens in the Ted Paul Theater on April 11-13 and again on April 18-20, 2019.

Tickets can be purchased at the Early Center for Performing Arts box office on campus.

Softball take two on the road against SMSU

The team traveled on the road to Marshall and squeak out two wins

BRADY OLSON STAFF WRITER The MSU softball team had a fruitful Tuesday afternoon in Marshall, sweeping the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs by scores of 5-2 and 1-0.

In the opener, the Mustangs would get the early advantage, scoring two runs in the opening inning.

The Mavericks would not be able to break through until the third inning, when sophomore Torey Richards’ single would score senior Cori Kennedy, bringing the Mavs’ deficit to one.

The next two innings would remain scoreless for both sides.

JOHN LAFOREST STAFF WRITER Minnesota State’s impressive baseball season continued Tuesday as they swept a two-game double header against Northern State to improve their record to 24-8 on the season.

The set of wins for the Mavericks gave the team their fifth and sixth wins in a row on the season, placing them third in the NSIC standings.

Sophomore right-hander Jimmy Larson tossed a gem in game one of the doubleheader, as he recorded his third complete game of the season, giving up four hits and one run with nine strikeouts and one walk in the dominant pitching performance, improving his record to 4-3 on the season.

The Mavericks offense seemed to respond to the performance from Larson, but could not get their offense going until the top of the fourth inning.

The Mavericks would add on to their lead, as junior first

baseman Ty Buck and junior second baseman Teddy Petersen both got a hit that put runners on first and third with one out in the inning.

Sophomore designated hitter Cam Kline then came to the plate soon after and bolted a three -run homer that put the Mavericks on 4-0.

Northern State put one run up in the final inning, as junior left fielder Chad Hinkle lifted a sacrifice fly and brought home junior first baseman Hayden Houts to make the final score 7-1.

The second game featured an offensive explosion by the Mavericks. The Mavericks

won the game 14-1 going 8 innings.

Redshirt freshman pitcher Jack Zigan looked sharp on the mound for the Mavericks in game two, going six innings in a bounce back start and allowed one run on four hits, while striking out nine batters.

Freshman right-hander Kyle Nordby would then come in relief of Zigan, pitching a scoreless eight-pitch seventh inning that included one strike out.

Junior right-hander Jon Ludwig pitched for the first time since March 1 and went on to strike out the side in the eighth inning.

End of an era: Dwyane Wade and Dirk Nowitzki retire The duo combined for 27 All-Star appearances and 4 NBA titles in their tenure

ANDREW NEURURER STAFF WRITER The NBA will look a lot different next year now that two iconic superstars will no longer be playing, as Miami Heat guard Dwayne Wade and Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki have both retired after having two of the best careers the league has ever seen.

Wade, a 37-year-old veteran guard who’s played 15 seasons in the NBA, spent most of his time with the Miami Heat, playing with the organization from 2003-2016 and then back for another run from 2017 on. He did venture north, playing for the Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers for one season each.

After the way the season was going for the Cavaliers, Wade was eventually able to come back to the city that drafted him. It’s only fitting that he was able to end his great career with the team that he spent most of his career with.

steals and 0.8 blocks. Over the span of his 15 years, he was a 13-time All-Star, 3-time NBA champion, 8-time AllNBA, 3-time All-Defensive player and was on the 200304 All-Rookie team. He has a lengthy list of achievements and will go down as one of

the best to ever play the game.

Nowitzki is one of the rare few who play their entire career with the team that drafted him. Nowitzki entered the league as a rookie for the Dallas Mavericks during the 1998-1999 season and

leaves Vince Carter as the only other 40-year-old player in the league.

Nowitzki, much like Wade, has a lengthy list of achievements along his 20-year career. He was a 14-time All-Star, 12-time AllNBA, 2010-11 NBA champion

On the offensive end, the Mavs spent just as much time struggling at the plate. Freshman Kayla Moky would hit a single to lead off the game, but her at-bat would be followed by 15

consecutive outs.

In the sixth inning, the Mavs would string together a couple of hits, but couldn’t get past second base. The final hit of the day would ultimately be the decider, as

Kennedy’s leadoff home run in the seventh would propel the Mavs to a 1-0 win.

With the wins the Mavericks advance their record to 22-14, along with 7-7 in NSIC play. The Mavs

will next play on Saturday, when they will play a road doubleheader against the University of MinnesotaDuluth.

and won the 2006-2007 MVP. By the end of his career, Nowitzki finished sixth on the all-time scoring list – scoring a whopping 31,540 points when it was all said and done.

He finishes his career averaging 20.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 0.8 steals and blocks per game.

He will go down as one of the all-time greats to play the game and has left a mark on the game.

He was one of the first seven footers to shoot 3-pointers and has since revolutionized the game. Now it’s almost imperative that centers and power forwards can shoot the ball from distance. Each year players that play in the post are slowly fading out. Even players that have never shot 3-pointers before have since changed the way they play to stay relevant in the league.

Both Wade and Nowitzki end their careers as one of the best to play the game and have made a large impact both on and off the court.

Budweiser released a video tribute for Wade’s last home game, highlighting the great things he’s done off the court.

It’s a cool video and it just goes to show that it really is bigger than basketball.

NFL Draft: Bold predictions for the Minnesota Vikings

KEVIN KORBEL SPORTS EDITOR With the NFL Draft two weeks from now, we’ll soon see the future stars of the league being drafted on the stage in Nashville, Tennessee.

Here are three predictions for the Minnesota Vikings going into the NFL Draft: Vikings draft an offensive lineman with first pick The Vikings offensive line faced extreme adversity prior to the start of the 2018 season, when offensive line coach Tony Sparano passed away unexpectedly just two days before training camp opened.

Vikings Head Coach Mike Zimmer moved Clancy Barone (formerly tight ends coach) to the offensive line and promoted assistant offensive line coach Andrew Janocko to co-lead with Barone.

The Vikings finished their season with eight offensive linemen on the active roster, and each started at least two games during the 2018 campaign.

Minnesota allowed 40 sacks of quarterback Kirk Cousins in 2018, which tied for 10th-most in the league with

Detroit’s Matthew Stafford.

The number of sacks was a jump from last season, when the Vikings allowed just 27 takedowns of Case Keenum (22) and Sam Bradford (5).

The Vikings need a replacement at the guard and tackle positions after the departures of Mike Remmers and Tom Compton. The team may look for competition at right tackle for Brian O’Neill after he had an okay showing for the team last season.

At this pick, there may be a lot of talent on the board for the team at the No. 19 pick, with Alabama tackle Jonah Williams, Oklahoma tackle Cody Ford and Boston College guard Chris Lindstrom expected to be available at the position around the time the Vikings pick. All of these players would give the Vikings a boost at offensive line.

The team drafts Latavius Murray’s replacement in the mid-rounds With Latavius’ departure to New Orleans, and Roc Thomas facing a felony marijuana charge, the Vikings will look to the draft to add another talented running back behind Dalvin Cook, especially with Cook’s laundry list of injuries in years past.

A couple of names to keep your eye on in the mid-rounds that might be good complementary backs to Cook are Michigan State

running back L.J. Scott, who has a similar build to Latavius and can catch the ball out of the backfield and Kentucky running back Bennie Snell Jr., who helped Kentucky get to a 10-3 overall record after rushing for 1,449 yards and 16 touchdowns.

The Vikings have struck gold lately in drafting running backs in the draft, with Dalvin Cook and Jerick McKinnon getting picked late in the draft by the team the past couple of years.

After another underwhelming season with the club, the Vikings may look towards the draft for competition at the third wide-out spot behind Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen.

Iowa State wide receiver Hakeem Butler and Arizona State wide receiver N’Keal Harry could be a couple of faces to look out for in the draft, especially after both of them had impressive performances for their respected teams in 2018.

The Vikings may need more competition at linebacker as well, with Vikings linebacker Ben Gedeon being an underwhelming performer

The team may look inside their own state for help, with Minnesota Golden Gopher linebacker Blake Cashman turning heads as of late after impressive performances in the NFL Scouting Combine and pro day.

Other names to keep an eye on late are Wisconsin outside linebacker Ryan Connelly, and Northwestern outside linebacker Nate Hall, who also pulled in some impressive performances in the combine.

With the Vikings currently holding eight picks in the draft, the team looks to continue to build the team’s future within the next couple of weeks in Nashville.

Magic Johnson abruptly resigns as Lakers’ president LOS ANGELES (AP) — Magic Johnson abruptly quit as the Los Angeles Lakers’ president of basketball operations Tuesday night, citing his desire to return to the simpler life he enjoyed as a wealthy businessman and beloved former player before taking charge of this tempestuous franchise just over two years ago.

Johnson didn’t tell owner Jeanie Buss or general manager Rob Pelinka about his shocking decision before he announced it in front of reporters about 90 minutes before the final game of the Lakers’ sixth consecutive losing season.

Los Angeles, which is missing the NBA playoffs yet again despite the offseason addition of LeBron James, played well after Johnson’s announcement, but still lost 104-101 to Portland.

“I want to go back to having fun,” Johnson said, fighting off tears. “I want to go back to being who I was before taking on this job. We’re halfway there with LeBron coming (last summer).

I think this summer, with that other star coming in, whoever is going to bring him in, I think this team is really going to be in position to contend for a championship with the growth of the young players.”

Johnson didn’t directly tie his decision to the future of Luke Walton, but the third-year coach was widely expected to be fired

by Johnson. Without using names, Johnson repeatedly mentioned Buss’ affinity for Walton, who was in place before Johnson got his job in February 2017, and Johnson’s desire not to cause upheaval between the owner and her chosen coach. “(On Wednesday) I would have to affect somebody’s livelihood and their life,” Johnson said. “And I thought about it and I said, ‘That’s not fun for me. That’s not who I am.’ And then I don’t want to put her in the middle of us, even though she said, ‘Hey, you can do what you want to do.’ I know she has great love for him and great love for me.”

Johnson and Buss had a three-hour meeting Monday about the direction of the 16-time NBA champion Lakers, who haven’t made the postseason since 2013.

Magic claimed he didn’t finalize his decision until Tuesday morning.

“Somebody is going to have to tell my boss, because I know she’s going to be sick,” Johnson said. “But I knew I couldn’t face her face-to-face and tell her.”

Buss didn’t attend the Lakers’ season finale, although Johnson waited by the executive parking area at Staples Center in hopes of seeing her. Buss tweeted her reaction at halftime.

Walton, who is 98-148 in three seasons, refused to say much about Johnson’s announcement after the loss to Portland: “I found out when you guys did. It was 80 minutes before the game ... and I haven’t had any time to really process it.”

Clearly blindsided by Johnson’s announcement, the Lakers also issued a team statement at halftime.

“There is no greater Los Angeles Laker than Earvin Johnson,” it said. “We are deeply grateful to Magic for all that he has done for our franchise as a player, an ambassador and an executive. ... He will always be not only a Lakers icon, but

Johnson’s desire for his old life wasn’t the only reason for his departure. He also said he is tired of being investigated or fined by the NBA for tampering when he comments on basketball on Twitter or even speaks to another organization’s player.

Johnson, a longtime broadcaster and respected basketball figure before moving into the front office, has been investigated four times for tampering after everything from a joking comment about Paul George on Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show

to his response to an email sent to him by Philadelphia’s Ben Simmons.

“I thought about Dwyane Wade retiring (Wednesday), and I can’t even tweet that out or be there,” Johnson said. “Serena Williams called me a week ago and said, ‘Will you mentor me and be on my advisory board?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I’m going to do that.’ So when Ben Simmons called and we went through the proper channels and they made me look like the bad guy out of that situation, but I didn’t do anything wrong ... I was thinking about all those times, all those guys who want me to mentor them or be a part of their lives, and I can’t even do that. I had more fun on the other side.”
