Five suspects were arrested in two separate incidents for being in possession of drugs worth an estimated R500k ERMELO: According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, police here in Ermelo were alerted to suspicious drug activities carried out at a certain house in the area. The suspects allegedly used a silver VW Polo Vivo for trafficking drugs. Members from the Ermelo K9 Unit together with their counterparts from Standerton K9 Unit then coordinated their resources to act collectively. The collective unit followed the leads and spotted the identified house which matched the description as given. Upon their arrival at the place, the police found three people busy packaging something suspicious inside the house. The police officers searched the suspects and tossed the

house. According to the police, upon searching the house, they found more than 580 heroin sachets along with an undisclosed amount of cash, which suggested that the suspects were involved with drug dealing. “The three suspects, aged between 28 and 38, were immediately arrested and charged accordingly,” said Hlathi. “One of the suspects is a female and the trio were expected to appear before the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court.” Meanwhile, members from the Lydenburg K9 Unit also conducted an Intelligence-Driven Operation where they intercepted suspects who were in a planned mission to traffic bags of dagga using a Ford Ranger bakkie.

MEC FOR EDUCATION MONITORED SCHOOL’S REOPENING MPUMALANGA: As schools reopened, the Mpumalanga MEC for education, Bonakele Majuba, undertook a school support visit to Kabenziwa Primary School in Siyabuswa here in Mpumalanga. On arrival, the MEC said that he found that the school’s principal, teachers and SGB well prepared for the reopening. “All the protocols of Covid-19 have been followed. They had water and sanitisers well prepared for the learners,” he said. Majuba said schools are urged to remain

vigilant and to apply all nonpharmaceutical interventions, such as washing hands with soap and water or sanitising them regularly, wearing masks and maintaining social distance. “We welcome all our teaching staff and learners back to school, and we wish them well in their undertaking to teach and learn.” He also monitored the school’s preparations for the return of all primary school learners on August 2. “We did not see any issues that could affect the return

03

of the learners and we are glad that things are in order. This area has water supply issues, although we are happy that they have boreholes at the school, and this will assist with supplying water for the children.” Schools are expected to embark on a curriculum recovery programme to strengthen efforts to prepare learners for the final examinations, and to ensure full adherence to Covid-19 health and safety protocols.

SAPS VACCINE ROLL-OUT MOVING SMOOTHLY MPUMALANGA: The MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Vusi Shongwe, said the process of launching the SAPS vaccine is "looking after the right targets and at the right time". The vaccination of SAPS employees is well under way, with no hiccups being reported since the commencement of the roll-out. The provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Semakaleng Manamela, was one of the members who received their vaccination on the day of the launch at the SAPS head office. The MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Vusi Shongwe, said the process of launching the SAPS vaccine is “looking after the right targets and at the right time”. “Everyone who arrives in the

Mpumalanga SAPS vaccine roll-out

province lands in the hands of the police, in terms of roadblocks and other programmes. The police and traffic officers engage the public daily. Immediately after this programme, I will engage the MEC for health; traffic officers must also get their jab. They are equally exposed daily, just like the police,” he said. Shongwe said the plan is to vaccinate over 11 000 employees at the 11 registered sites across the Mpumalanga. “The estimated date of completion for this programme is the end of August.” The vaccination sites for the provincial SAPS employees are the head office and the following police stations: Hazyview, Nelspruit, Tonga, Secunda, Standerton, Piet Retief, Ermelo,

Middelburg, Witbank and KwaMhlanga. Shongwe said he encouraged SAPS members to be vaccinated, as well as the people in the province and neighbouring countries, such as Mozambique and eSwatini. The provincial Department of Health said the following phases were currently in progress: Phase 1, the vaccination of all health workers, and phase 2, persons 50 and above, and educators and their support staff. The MEC for health, Sasekani Manzini, urged the public to register and get the vaccine. “All the 250 sites will assist them with registration.” Col Donald Mdluli, the spokesperson for the Mpumalanga SAPS, said everything is moving smoothly.

So vra die Here in Jes. 49:15. Ek het jou naam in my handpalms gegraveer.”

Hy is my beste vriend en my beskermengel... ’n legende in my gemeenskap. THE TRUTH BEHIND “BEAUTY SLEEP” Turns out the age old phrase of “get your beauty sleep” isn’t just a cheeky phrase we like to throw around. Research shows that the concept of ‘beauty rest’ actually has scientific merit. The concept of beauty sleep is that you’ll look better in the morning after getting a full night of rest. When study participants were asked to look at photos of both well-rested and sleep-deprived people, they reported that the sleep-deprived ones looked less healthy and less attractive while the well-rested ones appeared healthier and more attractive. The thing to note is that while you are sleeping, there are many restorative processes happening beneath the surface of the skin. As we know, environmental factors such as pollution and sun exposure can break down collagen in the skin during the day, and the magic of our bodies replenish collagen while we sleep. So now we know how a good nights sleep can assist with collagen production which in turn gives the skin a youthful, firm look. *Side Note: sleep deprivation also messes with your hormones which then in turn affects your hair growth! So here are a few tips to maximise your ‘beauty sleep’ benefits : - Try to get 7-9 hours of sleep. - Blue light can disrupt your sleep-wake cycle so the ever popular ritual of scrolling through your feed or catching up on the latest episode of your current Netflix binge isn’t exactly the best sleep-promoting practice. Don’t kill the messenger, but perhaps you need to consider stowing your phone an hour before bedtime and pick up a book instead. - Another classic rule of thumb is to avoid consistent alcohol, caffeine and big meals before bed.

THE CHINESE TECH MOUSETRAP

TIPS FOR COPING WITH JOB LOSS ■ JUDY BRYANT Just Money suggests ten tips for dealing with job loss: Draw up a budget: Make some tough decisions and prioritise necessities rather than nice-to-haves. Paying a home loan or rent, groceries, electricity, children’s education are essentials for most people. Gym subscriptions, and takeaways can be dispensed with, although you will still need connectivity for job searches and interviews. Factor in tax: If you are due a tax pay-out, allocate it when planning your budget. Use this money to trim your debt, or to pay for your household costs. Talk about your situation: Don’t feel you have to handle all this on your own. Discuss the situation with your spouse and get your family on board. Inform your bank manager, financial advisor, and creditors. You are not the first person to experience job loss, and financial institutions have options in place. Apply for unemployment benefits: Work with your former employer and register online, or visit your nearest unemployment centre, to ascertain the benefits you can claim. Ensure you have the correct documents at hand, such as your ID, previous pay slips, and a letter from your former employer. More tips in next week’s edition

It became apparent over the weekend that on 6 July 2021 wouldn't be a happy day for Chinese tech stocks. Although yesterday's bloodbath was fully expected, it was still brutal. Both Naspers and Prosus fell by around -6%. In Hong Kong, Alibaba fell 2.8%. And Tencent? That was down -3.6%. Year-to-date, Tencent is down -1.8% which is hardly the type of return that anyone would be happy with. Naspers is down around -8%, Prosus -18% and Alibaba 11%, so it's been pretty horrible across the big names. To give an indication of how painful the story has been for Chinese tech companies compared to other Asian growth stories, Sea Limited (a tech conglomerate headquartered in Singapore) is up by more than 37% this year. There's a lot of cheese in the Chinese tech market. Some believe it is a trap for investors. Unfortunately, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is flexing its substantial muscles when it comes to control over the country's tech ecosystem. Big tech companies do all kinds of things that authoritarian governments don't approve of, like give people access to information and new products, while connecting them with the rest of the world. The rot began in early November 2020, with the shocking news that the IPO of Ant Group (the payments business incubated within Alibaba) had been pulled by Chinese authorities. Jack Ma had been highly critical of the CCP and the Chinese banking system, which doesn't win you any friends in high places. After Jack Ma literally disappeared for a while,

reminiscent of the average Bond movie plot, he magically resurfaced and began a process of repairing Alibaba. Things quietened down for a while. I felt brave enough to buy the Alibaba dip last week, as the underlying business is still strong in my opinion. Of course, my timing was spectacularly unlucky. As the news broke over the weekend of China's clampdown on ride-hailing app Didi, a company that listed in the US just days prior, it became clear that the problems are back. Arguably, they never went away in the first place. Tencent is the latest casualty, although in this case the issue relates to a blocked merger rather than a truly damaging ruling like the removal of an app. Tencent planned to merge the country's two most important videogame streaming sites: Huya and DouYu. "Huya" sounds like the sound emitted by most local asset managers yesterday, who suffered a kick in the gut of a 6% drop in the NaspersProsus stable. The biggest issue, but also the biggest opportunity, is that investor sentiment has cooled towards China. The read-through for Naspers and Prosus isn't promising. Luckily, those companies are so busy trying to create a convoluted corporate structure that people barely have time to consider the genuine business risks in the portfolio. For the likes of Alibaba, the debate will rage on about the extent of the Chinese risk discount that should be applied to these companies. It's going to be a bumpy ride.

WHEELS “For South African buyers, particularly family men, bakkies are more than simply vehicles. For many it is a status symbol that makes them stand out. It is also a workhorse, a family vehicle and an adventure companion,” says Nic Campbell, General Manager of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA). The current generation of the Triton was introduced locally in 2019, less than six months after the world launch. Since then it has been hailed as a highly competent offering in the bakkie segment, and one that caters to the needs of discerning buyers. “With a bakkie-building pedigree that stretches well over 40 years, Mitsubishi managed to enhance and refine the current Triton in such a way that it has found favour with commercial and leisure users, as well as – of course – dads who recognise quality and value when they see it,” explains Campbell. The clothes maketh the man and in this respect the styling of the Triton gives it a rugged yet well-groomed and attractive appearance. Some of its most striking exterior features include Mitsubishi’s “Dynamic Shield” front design, which incorporates a high hood line and beefy-looking headlights. At the same time sculpted body curves with contrasting sharp lines, extended wheel flares and bright accents create the impression of strength. The Triton also comes in fashionable colours

MITSUBISHI TRITON

such as Sunflare Orange, Diamond White Metallic and Graphite Grey Metallic. Discerning fathers don’t only want to look good though, they also want to travel in comfort and the interior of the Triton offers just that. It has a modern and robust feel to it, with frame surroundings for the switch panel and air outlets. A high-quality look is created by soft pad materials and stitching on the floor console, armrests and parking brake. In addition a tilt and telescopic adjustable steering column, a multifunction leather steering wheel with audio and cruise control, Bluetooth with handsfree voice control, a touch-screen radio/CD and MP3 player, dual-zone automatic airconditioning, electric windows, USB and accessory sockets, leather seats, an electrically adjustable driver seat and a chromatic rearview mirror ensure that any trip in the Triton is an enjoyable experience. Apart from good looks inside and out, the Triton also boasts the latest in active safety and driver assistance systems, as well as a very capable 4WD system that

delivers impressive off-road performance. Any father will agree that the safety of his family members is of paramount importance. The Triton addresses this by providing a high impact-safety cabin structure and a host of safety features that include seven airbags, side-impact protection bars, a collapsible steering column, ISOFIX child seat anchors, active stability and traction control (ASTC), an anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), a brake assist system (BAS), speed-sensing door lock and a high-mounted rear stop lamp. Fathers with an adventurous spirit will appreciate the Triton’s Super-Select II 4WD system, delivering optimum traction and handling characteristics for any surface, no matter how challenging. With ground clearance of 220 mm, approach and departure angles of 28 degrees and 23 degrees respectively, and a 25-degee ramp breakover angle, there are very few places the Triton won’t be able to go. Dads might be tough, but they have big hearts. At the heart of every Triton beats Mitsubishi’s tried and tested 2.4L MIVEC turbodiesel engine, mated to either a sixspeed automatic transmission with Intelligent Shift Control or a six-speed manual transmission. Clever dads will be impressed by performance figures of 133 kW at 3 500 r/min and 430 Nm of peak torque at 2 500 r/min.

FORTRESS BONSMARA

ONTEIENINGSWETS ONTWERP BLY DIE GROOTSTE BEDREIGING VIR EIENDOMSREG

■ BKB LOUWID

The annual Fortress Bonsmara Commercial sale took place digitally this year on the 6th of July. The auction was a success with the average achieved on the bulls was R45 360. The most expensive bull was sold for R115 000. BKB Louwid hosted the auction with Jan Moster as the auctioneer.

LEEUWBULT BONSMARA AUCTION ■ BKB Our 3rd Leeuwbult Bonsmara Production Sale was yet another great success! Nine stud breeders bought bulls at an average price of R71 000. We also sold 18 bulls at an average price of R59 000 to both commercial and stud breeders.

NASIONALE BRAFORD VEILING ■ OVK
