TRANSNET’S PHELOPHEPA TRAIN ARRIVED IN THE PROVINCE LAST WEEK

Picture: Roche

ERMELO: The Mpumalanga public healthcare system received a welcome boost with the arrival of the Transnet Phelophepa train last week in the province. Health MEC, Ms. Sasekani Manzini, welcomed the mobile clinic which is set to deliver much-needed medical services to residents living in rural areas. These mobile clinics travel to areas of South Africa where having only one doctor available for every 5000 people is nothing new. It runs for 36 weeks of the year and travels to 70 remote communities; bringing hope to citizens who are in need of access to healthcare facilities. Residents are delighted to be on board the Phelophepa train in a province where people have to wake up in the wee hours of the morning to start queueing for medical services at public clinics and hospitals. One resident said she had to leave her home at midnight to be first in the queue to have her eye problems seen to. “If I had to go to an optometrist, I would have paid more than R3 000. These glasses I received will last at least two years. I am very happy with the service on the train and I hope it will reach others.“ Another resident also said that he was very impressed with the service he received. “I want to salute the government for this Phelophepa train which is helping so many people. What really touches my heart is how hospitable these people are towards us. They are treating us with respect and dignity so everyone is happy,” he said. The Phelophepa train is a breath of fresh air for residents who are helped within a day and are not…(continue on page 3)

(from page 2) …sent from one clinic to another. They also have access to top-notch facilities and services which are either free or offered at a reasonable price. Patients only pay R5 for their medicine prescriptions. Services include eye and dental consultations as well as access to healthcare education, comprehensive physical assessments, treatment for cancer, pap smears and testing for prostate cancer. The eye care clinic offers free eye tests, spectacles which cost only R30 and eye drops which can be bought for R5. All services are free to children who are 15 years and younger and are offered on a first come, first serve basis. Residents need to bring their clinic cards as well as immunization certificates for children. Transnet Phelophepa train manager, Bheki Mendlula, said they are bringing a complete bouquet of services including mental health and pharmaceutical services. He also urged the public to make use of the cancer screening services and get vaccinated against COVID-19. “With the ongoing pandemic, we have started to assist with the COVID-19 vaccination rollout program. The turnout has been good but at the moment, the demand for eye care is overwhelming. But it’s good to see that people are willing to be vaccinated,” said Mendlula. He added: “We will provide more clarity around the issue of vaccines because there is so much fake news and unfortunately some people tend to believe some of it. They are discrediting the use of vaccines and in the long run, it. If the majority of us take the vaccine, the sooner we can get back to normality and the longer we take, the more chance there is of new variants developing. We encourage our people to take the vaccine and to be safe and protected.” Manzini joined Mendlula in urging citizens to get vaccinated. “We are still in the middle of the pandemic and we would like to urge everyone to get vaccinated. People must also not forget to continue to adhere to COVID-19 protocols,” she said. The train is currently in Carolina, Ermelo and Bethal where it will be stationed for two weeks at a time.

REKORD 08

WIE IS ONS?

Solidariteit Helpende Hand se roeping is gemeenskapsontwikkeling. LIVE LESOTHO MAKES FINAL PREPARATIONS FOR THE MOTUL ROOF OF AFRICA 2021

PICTURE: Start of Round the Houses at 2019 Motul Roof of Africa (Supplied)

This year’s Roof is now just a month away (24 – 28 November 2021) , and organisers are putting the finishing touches to what will be a very welcome return for one of Africa’s most iconic Hard Enduro events. The buzz around the return of the Motul Roof of Africa – after only it’s second-ever postponement – can be judged by the fact that over 400 entries have already been received for this year’s event. Alongside the established Gold, Silver and Bronze Classes, a new Iron Class has been added to give ‘weekend warriors’ the chance to experience the mountains of Lesotho from the saddle. As the event approaches, organisers Live Lesotho have further refined the format to achieve a perfect balance between challenging elements and striving to ensure the safety of riders and their support crews. This will see each rider limited to just five support crew members. The format this year will be similar to 2019, but with the notable exception of the EnduroX component. This decision was taken by Live Lesotho in an effort to avoid mass gatherings while COVID-19 is still a consideration. On Wednesday 24 November, riders will need to go through the required documentation and scrutineering sessions. The process will take place at the Avani Lesotho Hotel & Casino (top hotel) and will be streamlined to facilitate social distancing – without being in any way less rigorous. On Thursday 25 November, the program will run as follows: Round the Houses through the streets of Maseru; Followed by a Time Trial at Thaba Bosiu, for all classes. Friday 26 and Saturday 27 November, will be Race Day 1 and 2 respectively, and the start/finish will be a Thaba Bosiu,

headquarters for the event. “This year’s Motul Roof of Africa will be the result of two years’ planning and plotting new routes, so we’re certain that riders will feel it was worth the wait,” commented Charan Moore, Motul Roof of Africa Route Director and Manager of Live Lesotho. “We can confidently promise both Roof rookies and returning riders a rewarding, challenging course – something they will never forget,” he added. Speaking of returning riders, this year’s field will be headed by defending Roof champion Wade Young of the Sherco Racing Factory Motul Team. When he lines up at the start of the Mother of Hard Enduro, Young will be hot off the international circuit – he’s reportedly delighted to have the chance to try and retain his crown in the face of stiff Gold Class competition from the likes of Travis Teasdale (Trax GasGas), Brett Swanepoel (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), Matt Green (Matthew Green Racing), Luke Walker (McLarens bLU cRU Yamaha), Kerim Fitzgerald (Red Bull KTM) and Heinrich Aust (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna). Kirsten Landman (Brother Leadertread KTM) will be tackling the Gold Class as training for next year’s Dakar Rally. Confirmed participants in other classes include riders from the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, Egypt, Malawi, Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland, as well as a strong showing of Basotho riders. The Roof is therefore providing a welcome boost to a local tourism sector that has been hard hit by the pandemic. To make life a little easier for competitors, Motul will be sponsoring the Bike Wash facility in partnership with Eco Tanks and Goscor

Power Products, with Craig Kruger and his team providing facility management. While motorcycle manufacturers will endeavour to support teams and individual competitors during the event in ways that are aligned with COVID protocols. “We are very much looking forward to reconnecting with our friends in the Enduro community – whilst still respecting social distance guidelines,” commented Mercia Jansen, Motul Area Manager for Southern and Eastern Africa. “Last year’s postponement left a gap in our diaries, so we’re especially looking forward to returning to Lesotho and the Maloti Mountains,” she added. Lesotho’s management of COVID-19 has led to borders being re-opened for tourists (and riders). Only one negative PCR test is required for entry into Lesotho, and this must be within 72 hours of crossing the border. This negative result is then valid for 14 days, meaning that no second test is required within Lesotho. Rapid tests are available at the border, but this needs to be repeated on exit. Lesotho has also implemented drive-through border formalities, although South Africa has yet to follow suit. The hard work of all stakeholders, including sponsors and the Lesotho Government has contributed significantly to the excitement that is building around the Motul Roof of Africa 2021. For more information about this year’s Roof, including the COVID-19 measures that will be in place, visit the official Motul Roof of Africa Facebook page. 3. 6. In jou opinie kan die reuke van Dior, Chanel, of enige Franse parfuum, nie kersvashou by die reuk van die eerste somerreën óf 'n vars, omgeploegde land nie. 7. 8. Jy dra 'n Leatherman in jou handsak. Wel, dis vir my so.

REKORD 12

Jesus is nie." (Rom. 8:1). Só eenvoudig, maar so ongelooflik kragtig.

Slipping on the banana peel…

“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. Ephesians 4:26-27

 BY BERNI DYMET

Sin. The same one seems to trip us up over and over again. It’s almost like you walk out the front door and step on the same banana peel in the same place day after day, and fall flat on your face. Again! Why is that? I know that you know exactly what I’m talking about. We each have that one temptation that entices us; that one sin that entraps us over and over again – a short temper perhaps, or passiveaggressive behaviour. Maybe it’s gossiping or sexual immorality. It’s as though you’re completely powerless to break the cycle. You know Jesus came to set the captives free, but He just doesn’t seem to want to set you free. Ever felt like that? Perhaps you know the story of Job. He was one of the good guys, and yet God allowed the devil to attack him like nothing on this earth. He lost pretty much everything and whilst he often asked God “Why?” he never turned his back on God. He made it through many years of trials, and God blessed him. How did he make it through? What was it that gave him the strength to resist the temptation to curse God (which was the bet that the devil made with God right up front – I bet you I can get Job to curse you to which God replied – Bet you can’t. Do your darndest!) Well, here it is … the source of Job’s power: Job 23:12 I have not departed from the commandment of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my portion of food. (ESV) He treasured the Word of God even more than his food. And with the Word of God given such powerful sway in his heart, he was unassailable to the worst that the devil could throw at Him. That’s where the power is.

LOCAL Government Elections

2021

REKORD 13

SA youth voting for the first time in local government election Voting can be daunting and intimidating for those doing it for the first time, however, it is considered the most democratic tool of power vested by governments to their citizens. The most surprising information concerning voting is the lack of participation from young South Africans which is attributed to the absence of adequate knowledge that can enable them to feel that their vote matters in the election process. A research conducted by the Institute of Security Studies states that the importance of voter and civic education cannot be overstated. Furthermore, these initiatives can be used to create a better understanding for young voters on their rights and responsibilities to better view the country’s election process and political system. Amidst the efforts and processes put in place by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) which include the distribution of voter education through social media platforms to ensure young and first-time voters are eligible and registered, statistics of their participation in the election process is still in decline. The research also notes that political maturity through education is a vital part when emphasizing the importance of voting to young people, specifically between the ages of 18 and 19. This age group has been observed as uncertain who to vote for or whether to participate at all in the voting process due to a lack of insight and experience about politics. Some interesting data and statistics from Statistics South Africa concerning youth participation can be observed: 1.) Of the 26.2 million registered voters for the upcoming 2021 Local government election, the age group between 18- 29 make up 4 599 467 (17.54%). 2.) When looking at youth participation in previous elections like the 1999 elections, the youth turnout was between 43% and 44.5% and for the 2004 elections, just over 9 million of those aged 18-35 representing a total of 44% of registered voters in that year. 3.) When comparing registered voters between the ages of 18- 34 during the 2009 elections, the figures showed a total of 9 820 251 young people registered for the elections. The Election Day turnout between the ages of 18 – 19 was 490 875 of the 669 421 registered voters and the age group between 20 – 29 was 3 568 875 out of the 5 995 055 registered voters. Academics observed major events in the country that led to the youth turning out in number to cast their vote during the 2009 elections. Moreover, the turnout was influenced by Barack Obama’s ascendance to the White House which indirectly helped political parties accelerate campaigns at the time. Following those major turnouts was a disengagement of young people from the electoral process unlike the class of 1976 era, who were most politically active and conscious from an early age. Reports state that the decline was due to a lack of involvement in political and social issues affecting the country, but rather focus on the new digital age of gadgets such as video and the internet. However South African young people share a different sentiment to the above notion, they attribute the decline due to a lack of opportunities afforded to them. With unemployment on the rise in South Africa, many young people were demotivated to vote as they strongly believe their government has neglected them and their dreams. Political scholars have since termed this youth apathy as premature conclusions because they have lost interest in political processes and their participation has since shifted.

New Volkswagen Caddy for SA Soon Volkswagen South Africa has confirmed that the new Caddy will arrive locally in November 2021. Here’s what you can expect from the popular MPV. The Volkswagen Caddy serves as both a family MPV or cargohauling business vehicle and the new 5th-generation Caddy is due to arrive in South Africa in November 2021. The Caddy is built on Volkswagen’s highly scalable MQB platform and rather than redesigning the wheel for its new Caddy, the Volkswagen design approach is more evolutionary. The face of the new Caddy and the grille in particular is much slimmer than before with newly-designed LED headlights and a honeycomb mesh design for the lower grille completing the front-end design. The Caddy’s rear end gets slim vertical LED headlights. The Caddy will be offered with either a single large tailgate or dual rear doors as well as single or double side sliding doors. These doors can also be opened or closed electrically if you wish. Optional features will include a panoramic sunroof, removable tow bar and 16-inch Wien alloy wheels. A total of 12 body colours will also be on offer. When it comes to market, the Caddy will be offered with a new naming convention including Caddy, Caddy Maxi, Caddy Kombi, Caddy Maxi Kombi, Caddy Cargo and Caddy Maxi Cargo. The short wheelbase Caddy has seating for 5 passengers while the long-wheelbase Caddy Maxi is a 7-seater. As for the Caddy Kombi, it can be used as both a personal leisure vehicle or as a work vehicle and is offered in both short-wheelbase (7-seater) and long-wheelbase (5-seater/optional 7-seater) configurations, Seats can be removed to make more space and both feature easy-access sliding doors. The short wheelbase Caddy Cargo and long-wheelbase Caddy Maxi Cargo will serve your business needs with loading space of 3.1m3 and 3.7m3 respectively and up to 6 lashing rings make it possible to secure your load. The Caddy’s interior has been redesigned and infotainment screens will range from between 6.5-inches to 10-inches and a Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit will also be on the options list. A new multifunction steering wheel and automatic transmission lever are fitted and the new ergonomic seats should provide higher levels of comfort. Keyless Access will also be offered. A host of driver assistance systems will also be on offer including Travel Assist adaptive cruise control, Trailer Assist and Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert.

Engines for the new VW Caddy: The new Caddy will be offered with a petrol or diesel engine. The 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated engine will offer 81 kW and 152 Nm of torque and will be mated with a 6speed manual transmission. Volkswagen claims 7.3L/100km for this engine and it will be offered in the Caddy, Caddy Kombi (SWB) and Caddy Cargo (SWB). As for the diesel engine, it’s a 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine with 81 kW and 300 Nm of torque and it will also be paired to a 6-speed manual transmission and carry a claimed fuel consumption figure of 5.5 L/100km. It will be offered in the Caddy, Caddy Maxi (LWB), Caddy Kombi (SWB), Caddy Cargo (SWB) and Caddy Maxi Cargo (LWB). The passenger Caddy and Caddy Maxi will be sold with a 3-year/120 000km warranty while the Caddy Kombi, Caddy Maxi Kombi, Caddy Cargo and Caddy Maxi Cargo come standard with a 2-year / unlimited km warranty. A 12-year anticorrosion warranty is also standard across the range. Local pricing details will be confirmed closer to launch in November 2021.

If you are looking for a stylish panel van to haul goods, or people, the new Caddy is probably a good bet.

Nursing at Hospice:

It is a family affair We are Mortal. We’re born, we live, we make our mark and, when it’s time, we die. Though the time and circumstances are particular to each of us, we bear the prospect of death in common. We suffer as we watch our loved one decline and feel we are powerless to spare him or her. If you have chosen to read this article, you and your family are probably facing some challenging healthcare decisions. It may be hard for you to talk about death or know what to do next. Perhaps you feel alone and like you are losing control: you are confused by the information you are getting, medical interventions happen before you have a chance to understand them, and you are probably worried about money. It is unclear who is in charge… but it certainly doesn’t feel like you are. When we feel overwhelmed, we reach for what we know best and what is most dear to us. Families are our safety nets and sources

of strength. Hospice programs help family members understand, prepare for, and support each other through a final illness. With sound medical advice, hospice helps families make the choices that are right for them. It teaches family members how to confidently give the best care possible. When death comes, hospice continues to care for family members in their grief. Knowledgeable nurses are hands-on clinicians as well as the communication bridge to physicians and other healthcare providers. Hospice professionals assisting vulnerable patients and patient family members are often seen as “angels” and are trusted explicitly as they help families to make sense of the unknown, console them during times of burden and loss and step in where others may not be able to. Hospice care depends on your family members coming together, each doing their part. Hospice staff, ideally, are not

there to “take over;” rather, they are to teach and support. Although many may not know it, you and other family members can give amazing care, and hospice nurses assist in unlocking this potential, whilst supporting. In moments of a medical crisis, you can be confident that you can reach a hospice nurse and get a prompt response. When stress mounts, hospice staff provide practical assistance and assist you in finding the help you need. Focused support during grieving lasts as long as necessary after the death of a loved one. Our Nursing Staff, assisting during acute times of stress and vulnerability, can start to feel like members of the family. Should you have any queries about how we operate or wish to give feedback on your personal experience with Hospice and our staff, please feel free to contact management@stbh.org.za
