CAROLINA: Mr Thomas Maphosa (27) recently appeared before the Carolina Magistrate’s Court in connection with dealing drugs on September 14. This followed after he was arrested by members of the Hawk’s Serious Organized Crime Investigation unit in Mpumalanga along with the Crime Intelligence unit on the road from Badplaas to Barberton. According to Capt Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, spokesman of Hawk’s Mpumalanga, their team followed the vehicle which was transporting dagga from the Swaziland border to South Africa. She added Mr Maphosa, who was the sole occupant in the vehicle was arrested and charged for allegedly dealing in drugs. According to Ms Monica Nyuswa, spokesman for the Regional Directors Public Prosecution, the case was postponed for the defendant to obtain legal representation.

BUSINESSMAN IN COURT FOR TAKING MPUMALANGA EDUCATION DEPARTMENT FOR A RIDE ERMELO: Businessman Milton Mbongeni Lushaba has been arrested for allegedly swindling the Mpumalanga education department out of R280,000. Lushaba, 56, is accused of double invoicing the department when he was a scholar transport service provider 14 years ago. Hawks spokesperson Capt Lloyd Ramovha said Lushaba allegedly went as far as invoicing for school holidays. The directorate’s serious commercial crime investigation team arrested him on Friday last week (08 October 2021) and he appeared in the Ermelo magistrate’s court shortly afterwards. “The investigation itself started around April 2015 when the case was opened. The Hawks’ investigation uncovered that between September and October 2007, Lushaba as a transport service provider submitted invoices for services that were never rendered. In fact, in some instances, he submitted claims for the period when schools were closed. This resulted in the department losing around R280,000,” said Ramovha. Lushaba was released on R10,000. He will appear in the Middelburg commercial specialised crime court on November 12.

REKORD 03 FINE AND PRISON SENTENCE FOR BANK FRAUDSTER ERMELO: A former First National Bank employee has been convicted of fraud after he was bust trying to steal R10m from a client’s bank account. Siboniso Isaac Manyisa, 34, has been fined R15,000. He was also handed an eightyear prison sentence, which was suspended for five years on the condition that he is not convicted of fraud and theft during this period. “Manyisa is a former employee of First National Bank branch at Ermelo. In April 2019, he tried to transfer a sum of R10m from a client's bank account without his knowledge,” Hawks spokesperson Capt. Lloyd Ramovha said in a statement on Saturday. “The transfer was subsequently stopped by the bank as normal procedures were not followed. The client was called and he confirmed that he never authorized such a transaction which resulted in the Hawks arresting Manyisa, hence his conviction.”

Heuning Druppels Christianity Works  DEUR WILLEM BOTHA

 BY BERNI DYMET

Onbeskryflik kragtig, daardie druppeltjie ink. Maar moenie 'n fout maak nie, 'n gesproke woord is presies net so bindend. Die Here sê immers: laat jou ja jou ja wees. (Openb. 3:20). Ek het jou naam in my handpalms gegraveer, Ek sien jou mure altyd voor my."

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Jeremiah 29:11

WHEN SOMEONE ELSE IS SUFFERING

How do you respond when someone else is suffering? It’s not easy, is it? On the one hand, you feel helpless, and yet pitching in and helping often demands a personal commitment that costs us rather a lot. So, how do you respond? We met Hannah in the Old Testament, who, unlike Elkanah’s other wife, was unable to bear him any children. 1 Samuel 1:2 Elkanah had two wives. One wife was named Hannah and the other wife was named Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah did not. Not surprisingly, coupled with Peninnah’s nastiness, that hurt. Now, I’m so glad that these days we go with the whole one husband, one wife thing. But back then, that wasn’t the case. And the easiest thing for Elkanah would have been to favour Peninnah over Hannah. After all, it was Peninnah who was giving him children. It was Peninnah who seemed to have her act together, while Hannah was so sad, so often weeping. Yeah, favouring Peninnah and shunning Hannah would have been by far the easiest option. But that’s not the one Elkanah chose: 1 Samuel 1:4, 5. Whenever Elkanah offered his sacrifices, he always gave one share of the food to his wife Peninnah and a share of the food to each of Peninnah’s children. Elkanah always gave an equal share of the food to Hannah. He did this because he loved her very much, even though the LORD had not let Hannah have any children. Elkanah found every conceivable way to show Hannah his love. I’m sure coping with her moods wasn’t easy. And certainly, his love didn’t fill the void that only a child could. But he loved her anyway, the best way he knew how. Loving a hurting person is an investment. It costs us something upfront. That’s the way it’s meant to be.

Local

2021

Government elections 2021 LOCAL ELECTIONS: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW – 5 MYTHS ABOUT THE LOCAL ELECTIONS Myth 1: “If I don’t vote, my vote automatically goes to the winning party” Fact: Wrong, if you don’t vote, your vote doesn’t count. The Bill of Rights in South Africa’s Constitution grants all citizens aged 18 and older the right to vote. People have the choice about whether they’d like to exercise that vote or not. But under no circumstances will a person’s vote be voted if they haven’t marked the ballot. One person equals one vote so if you don’t vote the vote isn’t counted. Myth 2: “I can still register after the voters’ roll for an election closes” Fact: You can still make an appointment to register at the local IEC office responsible for your voting district. However, you will not be able to vote in the proclaimed elections. By law, no exceptions can be made. More than 13 million South Africans who are eligible to vote have not registered. They cannot vote because the voters’ roll is now closed. Myth 3: “I can’t register to vote because I live abroad” Fact: You can register abroad. The Electoral Amendment Act 2013 gave all South African citizens the right to register and vote abroad in national elections. To vote abroad, you must be registered and submit a VEC10 notification within the period specified on the election’s timetable (15 days from the date on which the election is proclaimed). However, if you live abroad, you won’t be able to vote in the local elections. This is because people vote in the area they live in for their local representatives. Myth 4: “My vote is not confidential” Fact: Your vote is your secret. The IEC has several measures they take to safeguard the secrecy of a vote. Firstly, every voter must present themself in person to vote. This ensures that there is no impersonation of one by another. Secondly, voters vote in a voting station behind a secure voting compartment. Thirdly, photographic equipment is outlawed at voting stations. Ballot papers are not numbered, therefore, no association of a ballot can be made with a voter.

Hakuna Matata Vaalrivier (Viljoenskroon, Vrystaat). “Braveheart en Gladiator op die bom. Hoek aas was Braveheart pit met Braveheart float. Dis al waarmee ons gehengel het. Ons het ook tiger nuts gebruik maar baie vasgesit en baie vis verloor. Stroom was ook baie sterk en rivier vol en kon nie oor die rivier gaan nie. Die wind ook baie erg en baie gepla. Ons bly dankbaar. Moes hard werk met tye om die vis uit te kry.” - Pieter

Myth 5: “I am 17 years old now, but will turn 18 around the time when the elections will be held. I can still vote” Fact: No, you must have turned 18 on or before the day on which the elections are proclaimed to be able to vote. When elections were proclaimed, they were published in the government gazette. No exceptions can be made.

BEST EVER GINGER FLUFF SPONGE CAKE INGREDIENTS: • • • • • • • • • •

4 eggs, separated ½ cup sugar ½ cup corn flour 2 tablespoons plain flour ½ teaspoon cream of tartar ½ teaspoon bicarb soda 1 teaspoon cocoa powder 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon ginger 1 dessertspoon golden syrup

METHOD: Beat egg whites until stiff. Gradually beat in sugar then add yolks one at a time. Continue beating until really light in colour and volume has increased. Sift in dry ingredients and gently fold through together with warmed golden syrup. Mix gently until all is incorporated. Don’t over mix or your cake won’t be light and fluffy. Bake in greased and lined sandwich tins at 160C for 20 minutes. Cover a cake cooling tray with a clean tea towel. Once cakes have cooled slightly, turn out onto the tray. Once cool, fill generously with whipped cream and dust with icing sugar to serve. NOTE: Warm the spoonful of golden syrup over the gas flame on my stovetop. Just enough to liquefy it a little. Not enough to make it hot.

Give your bathroom the spa treatment by adding this DIY stone bathroom rug. You can buy smooth stones from any hardware store or collect from your surroundings if they are aplenty. Using a strong glue, arrange and stick the cleaned and dry stones to a regular bathroom mat.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH

DRINKING TEA MORE REGULARLY MAY PROTECT YOU AGAINST DEPRESSION The increasing academic and clinical interest in how lifestyle factors, typically associated with physical health, may also impact mental health, have prompted researchers to look more closely into the effects of tea drinking on psychological well-being. Currently, a third of people with anxiety and depression never find an effective therapy, which is why scientists are starting to explore new, more integrated forms of treatment that look at the interconnectivity between the brain and the gut. Adele du Toit, spokesperson for the SA Rooibos Council (SARC) said more and more research supports the importance of healthy living, also encompassing tea-drinking, as a way to ward off depression. Du Toit said, "In recent years, the role of nutrition in mental health and preventative medicine, has prompted explorations into the effects of tea, especially herbal tea, on mental health. Researchers have found that frequent tea consumption has a strong linear relationship with reduced rates of depression. One study determined that for every three cups of tea consumed a day, the relative risk of depression decreased by 37%. The healthy compounds in tea likely stimulate a positive response in the gut and brain, which improves mood. Similarly, the act of making tea is in and of itself relaxing, which allows us a mental and emotional breather." Among the major triggers of depression is stress. The effects of chronic stress over a prolonged period are harmful and increases the risk of depression and anxiety disorders. Severe stress, caused by life events, such as a divorce or financial loss, sends the psyche out of equilibrium, therefore stress must be managed properly. Already, one in three South Africans suffers from depression and rates are climbing. Research into locally grown Rooibos tea points to its stress-relieving properties and ability to alleviate anxiety. Scientists from Stellenbosch University found that

Rooibos tea contains two rare antioxidants, namely, aspalathin and nothofagin, which interferes with the production of cortisol – a stress hormone secreted by the adrenal gland. Tests were carried out in a lab on adrenal cells that were stimulated to mimic a stress response similar to which occurs in humans. They concluded that Rooibos tea does lower the production of cortisol and by doing so, also lowers the body's response to stress. An added benefit is that Rooibos is caffeine-free, which helps the body to relax, whereas caffeine interferes with sleep, dehydrates you, increases blood pressure, and raises anxiety levels. Du Toit said Rooibos is rich in polyphenols – compounds found in plants, including flavonoids and phenolic acid that benefit the body and fights disease. It also helps to widen blood vessels, which in turn reduces blood pressure and anxiety. "Globally, we are seeing a move towards more natural ways of treating a variety of illnesses. Researchers are only beginning to examine how tea exerts its effects on mood and cognition. For now, they are trying to identify the major active compounds that give tea its mental health benefits and whether they work alone or in

combination with other compounds present in the beverage," said Du Toit. She said during the pandemic, tea has taken on a bigger role in people's lives as many have turned to it for solace. "The numerous challenges that the pandemic has brought has caused a surge in depression and anxiety worldwide. This places a tremendous burden on healthcare systems, and with limited available treatment options, dietary agents, such as tea, should be explored – even if the effects are moderate. As researchers strengthen their understanding of how various teas act on the body and how much of it should be consumed to produce the desired effect, there is no reason not to encourage people to drink tea as a means to improving mood," Du Toit concluded. October is Mental Health Awareness Month. If you or a loved one is experiencing anxiety, apathy, feeling hopeless, having trouble sleeping, crying excessively, is restless, experiencing changes in appetite, mood, energy, or concentration levels, or have suicidal thoughts, contact the SADAG helpline on 0800 70 80 90.
