WELCOME TO MICHIGAN STATE! Congratulations on being accepted to one of the best universities in the nation!

Your MSU experience will be filled with lifelong memories, friends, and exciting new opportunities that will stick with you for a lifetime. Becoming a member of Michigan State’s Fraternity & Sorority community is a tremendous decision that will allow you to become the best version of yourself. ABOUT THE INTERFR ATERNITY COUNCIL A fraternity is a group of men who dedicate themselves to higher ideals such as service, leadership, academics, and brotherhood. Above all, brotherhood in each of these fraternities is lifelong; you will secure a place on campus which you can return to many years later with brothers from years past.

Fraternities offer the most comprehensive student experience at Michigan State. Activities range from sports to service to academic-oriented experiences. Many fraternities host social events for their members, offer scholarships to members deserving of academic recognition, plan large trips for brothers, and promote leadership development through various programs and opportunities.

Each fraternity is different, focusing on their core values and what their membership wish to achieve in their time at Michigan State.

Frequently Used Terms ACTIVE/BROTHER: A fraternity member currently in college who has been formally initiated by their chapter.

ADVISOR: A graduated member/employee of the fraternity who actively supports the chapter and the chapter officers. They also help foster development of the chapter as a whole and its members.

ALUMNI: A graduated member of the fraternity who is no longer active in a collegiate chapter.

BID: A formal invitation to join a sorority or fraternity.

BIG: Nickname for big brother, a mentor assigned to mentor a new member. Not all fraternities have this.

CHAPTER: A local group of the larger (inter)national organization. Ex: Beta Zeta Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity at Michigan State University.

CHARTER: The official document drafted by a national fraternity/sorority that allows for creation of a local chapter that is affiliated with a college or university campus.

COLONY: A newly formed affiliate of a national organization that has not yet received it's charter. The members of a colony are referred to as “founders.�

DUES: The cost of both joining and maintaining membership in a fraternity or sorority. Can cover a variety of events and costs.

DATE PARTY: A social date function where fraternity or sorority members invite a date to join them at an event hosted by a fraternity or sorority.

HEADQUARTERS/NATIONALS: The (inter)national office that oversees the individual chapters.

FRATERNITY: A fraternity is a brotherhood formed around common goals and aspirations. These men make a commitment to each other for life.

FRATERNITY & SORORITY LIFE: The term used to describe the 61 chapters of fraternities and sororities.

INITIATION: The formal ceremony that brings new members into full membership of a fraternity or sorority.

INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL (IFC): The governing body of the 28 men's social fraternities at Michigan State. IFC fraternities are open to all men interested in joining.

LEGACY: The son or brother of an initiated or alumni member. Some organizations may also include grandchildren or stepchildren.

LIVE-IN REQUIREMENT: Rule that certain fraternities have stating that their members must live in the chapter house for a certain amount of time as an undergraduate member.

MULTICULTURAL GREEK COUNCIL (MGC): The Michigan State MGC consists of 11 fraternities and sororities that represent Latinx, Asian, Progressive and Multicultural/Multiethnic Greek-letter organizations on campus.

NATIONAL PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL (NPHC): The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is composed of the 9 largest historically African-American Greek-letter organizations. All of the ‘Divine Nine,’ as they are nicknamed, NPHC organizations are represented on Michigan State’s campus.

NEW MEMBER: A student who has accepted a bid for membership. After a period of education regarding the fraternity or sorority, the student is initiated to become a full member. Not all fraternities have New Members.

NEW MEMBER EDUCATION: The period before a new member is formally initiated as an active member when they learn about the organization, its members, and their values. The Interfraternity Council limits this process to a maximum of 8 weeks in duration. Not all fraternities have a New Member Education Program.

PANHELLENIC COUNCIL (PC): The governing body of the 14 women’s sororities that exist at Michigan State University.

PHILANTHROPY: A charitable fundraiser or service project sponsored by a fraternity or sorority.

PLEDGE: An out of date term -- see “New Member” above.

POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER (PNM): Any person who is eligible to participate in the Recruitment process.

RECRUITMENT: Process in which IFC fraternities select new members. Formerly known as Rush.

SOCIAL: A party hosted by a fraternity or sorority.

FINANCIAL COMMITTMENT Depending on the chapter, fraternity dues range from $200 - $1,100 per semester. This number should neither intimidate nor deter you from wanting to join. Dues go toward a number of expenses that help run the operations of the fraternity.

Be sure to ask the fraternities about what is expected from their members in regard to financial commitments.

Payment Plans Many fraternities at MSU offer payment plans for their members when paying dues and other expenses. Often times, members can pay their semester dues across several weeks to ease any burdens.

Interfraternity Council The Interfraternity Council at Michigan State University shall be the governing and supervisory body of all 28 social fraternities recognized by their respective national organizations and Michigan State University.

The specific purpose of the Interfraternity Council of Michigan State University shall be: To set forth the Constitution and By-Laws in order to foster closer working relationships and coordination among its member fraternities, cultivate relations with the university, and to promote qualities of character and scholastic achievement.

Letter from the VP of Recruitment Recruitment is one of the most important parts of the entire Greek community. It serves as a time for Michigan State students to go out and explore the opportunities available to them in Fraternity & Sorority Life. Recruitment is also a very important time for the fraternities as they search for members who align with the values and beliefs of their respective organizations. At Michigan State, the Interfraternity Council is made up of 28 individual fraternities that all represent something different.

Participating in the Recruitment process allows for Michigan State students to explore these fraternities and become more familiar with their members.

Joining a fraternity in college can also serve as a platform for further involvement on campus and career development beyond your time in school. Many members in IFC chapters are also involved in other clubs, sports, and leadership councils on campus.

Members of fraternities are able to network and meet other students with similar interests and values. We encourage potential new members to go out and try to familiarize themselves with as many fraternities as possible during the Recruitment period.

Joining a fraternity is one of the best decisions I have made. It has taught me many valuable lessons while providing numerous educational and leadership opportunities along the way. This fall, I encourage you to join us during our Recruitment period and see what opportunities await you.

Frequently Asked Questions What is Fraternity Recruitment?

Recruitment is the term used for the period during which potential new members meet the IFC fraternities. At the end of the Recruitment period, potential new members may be extended bids to join a fraternity.

At Michigan State, Recruitment consists of several days in the beginning of the Fall and Spring Semesters that includes events such as Greek Fall Welcome and a Meet the Chapters event. Here, potential new members can meet each chapter and find out information about their philanthropies, requirements to join, and what to expect financially.

On the night prior to the final day of Recruitment, chapters will call or text potential new members they wish to invite to their invite-only event on the final day of Recruitment. During the invite-only event, potential new members will be extended bids to join the fraternity, thus triggering the new member education period, if applicable. Bids are only to be extended during the Open Recruitment period.

Chapters are able to handout bids after Open Recruitment occurs, but no earlier than the first day of Recruitment.

What is a bid?

A bid is an invitation to join a fraternity. Potential new members should not feel pressured or obligated to accept a bid. Potential new members may receive numerous bids from different fraternities, but can only accept one.

What is bid night?

Bid night is a nickname for the final night of Recruitment where members are invited back to fraternity houses to receive bids. Fraternities will call or text potential new members inviting them to the invite-only event on the final day of Recruitment.

Once I receive a bid, what are my options?

No, after receiving a bid, a man has several options. You can ask the chapter how long you have to accept: 1. Accept the bid and officially become a new member of that fraternity.

2. Hold the bid - you need not feel pressured to accept immediately, but you should maintain communication with the fraternity regarding your interest.

3. Decline the bid - it is OK to decline a bid if you are not interested in joining that particular fraternity.

Is there any cost to participating in IFC Recruitment?

No, there is no cost.

Do I have to join as a first semester Freshman, or can I wait until the Spring or my Sophomore/Junior year?

You are allowed to go through IFC Recruitment as an upperclassman. If you do not have success finding the fraternity that fits your interests, you are encouraged to go out and meet other chapters in the Spring and following years.

Do I have to complete Recruitment if I have decided joining a fraternity is not for me?

No, you may remove yourself from the Recruitment process at any time.

Do all fraternities have Open Recruitment?

Yes, all fraternities at Michigan State participate in Open Recruitment. However, on Friday of Recruitment week, many fraternities will hold an invite-only event. Be sure to ask the fraternities about this during the Recruitment process.

What should I wear to Recruitment?

Most participants will wear a polo or button up shirt with shorts or pants. For shoes, it is recommended that you wear shoes that you are comfortable walking in.

Frequently Questions Frequently AskedAsked Questions If I participate in IFC Recruitment, am I guaranteed a bid/membership into a chapter?

No, participation in Recruitment does not guarantee a bid or membership.

However, the process is set up so you can visit and meet as many chapters as you can before Recruitment even begins. We encourage you to interact with every chapter to increase your chances of receiving a bid.

How long is the new member period?

New member education periods vary by chapter, but cannot exceed 8 weeks in length. Some chapters do not have a new member education period. All new member education plans are submitted and reviewed by the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life.

Where can I find information on hazing?

Information regarding hazing policies and resources may be found online at https://www.greeklife.msu.edu/resources/health-and-safety.html or on pages 54-55.

What can I do to find the chapter that is the best fit for me?

Utilize the events prior to Recruitment (Greek Fall Welcome, IFC Meet the Chapters, Sparticipation, etc.) to go and meet the fraternities and their members.

Chapters will also host pre-Recruitment events at their chapter houses prior to the week of Recruitment, so check their social media or ask their members about these events.

Is there a Michigan State Greek Row? No, Michigan State does not have a Greek Row, but there are clusters around East Lansing with high volumes of Greek Housing. See the Fraternity Map on page 53.

Is there a minimum required to partcipate in Recruitment/join a fraternity?

Yes, the IFC requirement to participate in Recruitment is a high school GPA at or above 2.30 for first semester freshmen, or at or above a 2.25 for those already in college. Individual fraternities may have different GPA requirements, so make sure you ask them during Recruitment.

I see there are other fraternities on campus that are not listed here. What are those organizations?

Michigan State is home to both the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) which both include fraternities. If you are interested in joining a fraternity in either of these councils, you can go to http://www.greeklife.msu.edu/governing-councils/index.html and click on each council's page to learn more.

What do you wish you knew coming into Recruitment?

To keep an open mind through the process and do your research! Stay away from blogs such as GreekRank and form your own opinion. Explore as many fraternities as possible and try to see if you can get in contact with a particular chapter’s Recruitment Chairmen if you are interested.

What is the financial commitment of joining a fraternity at Michigan State?

The cost of membership in a fraternity at MSU ranges anywhere from $200 - $1,100 per semester. See our ‘Financial Commitment’ section on page 8 for more information.

If I am a legacy to a chapter does that guarantee me a bid?

No, being a legacy does not guarantee that you will receive a bid. Each chapter has different guidelines regarding legacy status, so be sure to ask during Recruitment to find out more information.

Pre-Recruitment Events Prior to the start of the Recruitment Period, fraternities may host pre-Recruitment events for potential new members. These events may be open, or invitation-only at the discretion of the individual chapters. They are often advertised on chapter’s social media accounts.

Open events may be posted on the Michigan State IFC Instagram (@ifc_michigan_state) or on the IFC website (msuifc.com).

It is important to note that none of these events are mandatory to attend. However, they serve as great opportunities for potential new members to become more familiar with chapters and their members and ask any questions they might have.

Anyone interested in joining an IFC Fraternity at Michigan State University What? “Meet the Fraternities� is an event where those interested in joining an IFC Fraternity can learn more about individual chapters and familiarize themselves with fraternity men. This event is strictly limited to IFC Fraternities being showcased, and all 28 IFC chapters will be in attendance.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT RECRUITMENT - To meet a lot of different people.

- To sign in and provide your contact information at each fraternity you visit.

- A different experience at each fraternity you visit; each chapter has their own house, values, and members.

- To be given a tour of each fraternity house that you visit.

- The weather to be hot and maybe rainy! Prepare in advance and don’t be afraid to ask for water or to take a break if you need to.

WHAT NOT TO EXPECT AT RECRUITMENT - To be given alcohol or drugs.

- To be forced into accepting a bid.

- That every person you talk to in the same fraternity has the same personality. This is never the case!

- Fraternities to speak negatively about each other. This is a red flag!

Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity is a primarily agricultural-based, professional and social fraternity. Our main focuses are building networking skills, improving academics, and forming lifelong friends and connections. The Tau chapter at Michigan State has been actively “making better men” for the better part of a century. The members of our chapter are actively involved on and off campus and we place a premium on academics and philanthropy donating annually somewhere in the neighborhood of $20,000 to Michigan Agrability. 4 years ago Alpha Sig was a brotherhood of roughly 60 members. Since then we’ve over doubled in size. While we have grown quick in such a short period of time, we’ve strived to maintain the strong sense of brotherhood and community, while offering the social and professional networking opportunities other large fraternities have. With the success we’ve created year after year, we know better than anyone that houses change, and people don’t, ensuring that brotherhood will always come first.

Michigan State FarmHouse is apart of a nationwide Fraternity with over 30 active chapters across the U.S. and Canada. In 1988, our esteemed alumnus and actor Paul Newman, Ohio ‘43, founded Hole in the Wall Gang Camp on a 300-acre piece of land in Connecticut. Now an international organization known as SeriousFun Children’s Network, this camp was designed as a place where children with terminal or life-threatening illness could escape their medical conditions for a little while to just be kids and, in Paul’s own words, “to raise a little hell.” Today, SeriousFun camps have served over 1,000,000 children in 20 different countries - all free of charge. Phi Kappa Tau has been formally partnered with SeriousFun for over 25 years. In that lifetime, we’ve raised $1.6 million dollars.
