ANDRIE MEIRING meet Here Comes The Bride!

The first time I met Andrie Meiring, I was so embarrassed. I couldn’t stop my terrier from getting frisky with her G oldendoodle , Winston. This wouldn’t be the only time we had these encounters, but as time progressed, Chase and Winston became platonic friends. The more we ran into each other, the more I enjoyed getting to know her.

Andrie arrived in the United States when she was 18, to play tennis for Samford University. She left behind her mother and two sisters in South Africa to follow her dream. After completing her undergraduate and graduate degrees in accounting, she took her first job in Dallas to work for Armanino, LLP. She settled in nicely and enjoyed the occasional tennis league to meet new people. In June 2021, Andrie was set up by a friend and met her now fiancé, Bryan. They’re two months away from their late spring wedding!

Andrie seems relatively calm considering her nuptials are only two months away, but it seems to be her nature. When I see her out on walks with Winston, she’s always smiling and enjoying the moment. When I asked her if Bryan shares the same calm demeanor, she said, “he’s more easygoing than

me.” Together they make wonderful fur parents to Winston and their new addition, Walter, Wally for short, “we love taking the dogs for walks, we have met so many great people walking.”

When not out walking the boys, Andrie and Bryan enjoy taking advantage of all the neighborhood restaurants, a favorite is Terilli’s.

They also have their preferences in

sports. Bryan is a golfer and Andrie, you guessed it, loves tennis (however, Andrie is considering taking up golf for the two of them to enjoy on their honeymoon). Whatever their sports preference after May 19th, they’ll be playing as Mr. and Mrs. Bryan O’Hair!

Spring Cleaning? Don’t Forget Your Finances

Spring has always signaled a time of renewal and regrowth. It’s the perfect opportunity to spruce up the yard, declutter the garage or start a new home improvement project. In that same spirit of rejuvenation, we at Frost also suggest scrubbing your personal finances. Just as your house can use some TLC after a long winter, your budget and investments could also use the occasional cleanup to ensure they’re working efficiently toward your goals.

Here are five ideas to help freshen up your financial plan and portfolio:

1. TAKE STOCK OF LIFE CHANGES. Any significant events of recent years (a birth or death in the family; marriage or divorce; a health crisis) could trigger the need for some financial fine-tuning. That might include restructuring certain accounts, updating beneficiaries or rethinking your insurance needs.

2. REASSESS YOUR GOALS. Are you still on track to meet them? If not, it might be time to increase your savings rate, adjust your asset allocation or consider some alternative investment strategies based on the current economic climate. Be sure to consult your financial advisor for informed and objective guidance.

3. EXAMINE EXPENSES AND DEBT. Make a list of monthly outflows and cancel any unused subscriptions/memberships. Then, consider putting the money you save toward addressing any lingering debt. While you’re at it, pull a copy of your credit report and check for any errors or suspicious activity.

4. CLEAN UP THE CLUTTER. Take some time to consolidate redundant accounts, such as rolling over a 401(k) from a previous employer, and close old and unused accounts. If you haven’t already, create a special folder (digital or paper) for financial statements and transactional records – you’ll thank yourself at tax time.

5. THINK ABOUT FAMILY. Spring cleaning isn’t just for your benefit, it’s also a good time to ensure loved ones will be taken care of if something happens to you. Take another look at estate plans, wills and trusts to ensure they’re up to date. If you have aging parents, remind them to do the same.

BONUS TIP: Take advantage of available technology to simplify your life. Tools like Frost’s Wealth Connect allow you to see all your accounts on one screen, collaborate with your advisor and track progress toward your goals. With a new springtime shine on your finances, you’ll be in better shape for another season of healthy growth.

Looking for a cool crisp spring cocktail to enjoy on your patio? This refreshing twist on the National Drink of Mexico (the Paloma) will be the star of your spring cocktail menu!

INGREDIENTS:

• 2-4 tablespoons Chamomile honey syrup, to taste

• 3/4 water

• 1/3 cup honey

• 1-2 Bigelow Chamomile tea bags

• 3 ounces Ocean Spray Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice

• 2 ounces El Jimador Tequila

• 4 fresh strawberries, sliced

• Sparkling Water – try grapefruit, strawberry, or lime!

FOR CHAMOMILE SYRUP: Combine water and honey in a small saucepan and bring to a low boil, simmer for 1 minute and remove from the heat. Add the tea bag, cover and steep for 5-10 minutes. Remove the tea bag and allow the syrup to cool completely. Store in the fridge.

FOR THE COCKTAIL:

Add the grapefruit juice, chamomile syrup, tequila and strawberries to a glass. Muddle until the strawberries are lightly smashed. Add a handful of ice and then add sparkling water to top off. Give the drink a gentle stir. Taste and add more chamomile syrup if needed. Garnish with fresh chamomile flowers and strawberries!

2023 TRAVEL TRENDS

What are some hot spots for 2023?

This year, England, New Zealand, Morocco, and the United Arab Emirates are hot spots. Croatia, Spain, and Portugal continue to be popular. Domestically, Asheville (NC), Nashville, and our National Parks have much interest, and many people are traveling to Canada with the borders re-opened.

What are some recommendations for traveling with young kids?

Give yourself time. Reduce luggage. For a few years, my husband and I traded our individual roller bags for one large rolling suitcase. I only understood those big bags once we traveled with our young children. Remember that it’s only a season of your life. If you don’t feel as ambitious as you used to, that’s ok. You will within a few years. Do take your kids on trips though. Our kids are excellent travelers, and I attribute that to starting early.

I have the travel bug, but am in paralysis by analysis of picking a place - how could you help?’

If you are narrowing down a few options, I am always happy to have a call and help you determine the best option. On a broader scale, I also offer coaching where we schedule one or more calls to talk about broader travel goals over the year and beyond.

What’s the benefit of curating/booking trips with your advisory versus on my own?

Many people find planning travel to be fun…at first. Did you know that it takes an average of 16 hours to plan a simple trip for a small family? Group travel or more complex itineraries take even more time. Working with a travel advisor enables you to focus on the parts of the trip that you enjoy and leave the rest to someone else. Often, I can provide upgrades on properties at no additional cost to you.

My name is Chrissy Trotter and I believe that I was destined to be a globetrotter. 45 countries, 45 states, and counting. Do you want to travel more? I can help.

What’s Happening In District 14

District 14 Neighbors:

As we enter the second quarter of 2023, I want to take a moment to look back on a few 2023 events and promising things to come in the City of Dallas and District 14.

This year we are preparing for the new 2024 bond election. Our last bond election was in 2017 and it’s once again time to assess the city’s needs for street repair, bridges, flood protection, parks, city facilities, economic development and housing. The Council has appointed a bond task force to assess those needs. Now is the time to provide my office with ideas for infrastructure needs. Public meetings to discuss the bond election begin in May.

I am pleased to report that the Richmond Avenue pilot project has been completed! This project went through many rounds of input from neighbors after I took office and halted the design to allow such input. The goal was to slow traffic, reduce truck traffic, add a bike lane and improve pedestrian safety. My office has also advocated for corridor studies for Abrams and East Grand Blvd.

The District 14 team has also been working on improvements to our neighborhood parks. Cochran Park is receiving a new pedestrian trail and we are working on access improvements at Tietze Park such as an improved crosswalk signal at Skillman, completing the gap in the Skillman sidewalk and installation of new benches along the park trail.

This year, we worked with the Friends of the Santa Fe trail to plant 50 trees in District 14. We also got 185 new trees planted along Abrams at Graham park.

To combat homelessness, the city’s Rapid Rehousing Program has successfully rehoused over 1,600 unsheltered residents, well on the way to the goal of 2700 by October. In February, Dallas homeless services organizations received a $22.8 million federal grant to fight homelessness.

After the successful closure of OT Tavern last summer, we have been working with city attorneys, DPD and Code Compliance to close Bar 3606 through a proposed rezoning that would prohibit another bar. I’m excited for what’s to come for District 14 in 2023!

“I could go on all day long about how I distrust 95% of the medical establishment. So far, everyone I have had care from at this clinic has been in the rare 5%. I’m so lucky to have them on my team. The doctors here think outside of the box, can diagnose beyond the norm, and take time with the patients. They’re amazing for personal attention and when you deal with all the odd genetic and autoimmune issues I have, I need them in my life.

CRUISING IN CROATIA

Prior to Covid, My husband, Joe, and I decided to plan a trip to Croatia after one of our friends went and loved the country. I quickly started researching Croatia and planned the trip asJoe and I love to travel, especially internationally. We spent a few days in Split, then traveled to Hvar, one of the islands, for a few days. Croatia is absolutely beautiful! A must-see!

Where did you stay?

We stayed at a boutique hotel in Split and probably wouldn’t stay there again. It was too far away from all the action. In Hvar, we stayed at the Amfora Resort which was wonderful! It was right on the water and featured a private beach, plus it was a quick 5-7 minute walk to town.

What were some highlights of the trip?

Although we enjoyed Split, Hvar was the place where we fell in love. Both Split and Hvar are old cities and have lots of Roman ruins. Hvar especially is hilly, so we were able to do lots of walking and hiking. There is a castle at the top of Hvar which made for a glorious hike and view from the top. The water is CRYSTAL clear. I have a picture of Joe floating in the water and you can see the bottom of the ocean. It’s so clear!

Our favorite part of the trip was the day we rented a little boat. The guide gave us a quick training on how to operate the boat, then let us go. We had it out for 8 hours by ourselves touring around nearby islands. It was such a romantic experience to sail around with Joe. We stopped at one of the island restaurants for lunch

during the day, then would go find a cove to anchor down to go swimming. It was wonderful!

What were a few of your favorite places to eat/drink?

All the food was incredible - lots of Italian influence. We ate some of the best pizza and pasta we’ve ever had. My favorite was this truffle risotto that I still dream about!

Any recommendations for others interested in taking a similar trip?

Plan a trip!! Although Croatia was challenging to get to - we had to go through Munich - it was wonderful once we got there and surprisingly very inexpensive. Full dinners with appetizers, 2 entrees, desserts and drinks would cost around $60. Aside from the flight, Croatia was one of the cheapest trips we’ve ever done.

Meet Ben Kenobi!

ADOPT ME

Looking for their fur-ever homes

The Force is strong with this one! Ben is a Domestic Shorthair mix who is waiting for a forever home with the SPCA of Texas. He is just over 5 years old and is a little on the small side. He has a white coat of fur with some dappled grey on the back of his head and tail. Ben Kenobi is a pretty sweet boy, but he is still a little on the shy side and will need a bit to warm up to new people. He is hoping to go to a calm home where he will have time to adjust. Ben would prefer to be the star of the show and the only cat in the home, with all kiddos being at least 15 years old. He is housed at the Dallas Animal Care Center, so no appointment is necessary.

Meet Scarlett! She is a dainty but energetic little lady available for adoption from the SPCA of Texas. Scarlett is a Labrador Retriever mix who nudges the scales at just over 25 pounds. She is now approaching her 11th birthday, but she can still get out and scamper with the younger pups a good bit. As an older dog, she is available for adoption with a medical consideration to address some age-related issues. Scarlett came to the SPCA of Texas from a hoarding seizure in Hunt County back in May. She’s done well in her journey since and is currently in foster care so an appointment is necessary to meet her.

Meet Millie! She is an adorable little Labrador Retriever mix who is hoping to catch the eye of a happy family at the SPCA of Texas. Millie is a youngster and just spent her very first birthday in a shelter. She’s a bigger dog at 54 pounds, but she is quite the affectionate girl who loves to share snuggles and kisses. She’s an energetic play partner for other dogs or kiddos, and she has a very sweet disposition. And don’t forget an amazing pair of ears there! Millie is currently housed at the SPCA of Texas Dallas Animal Care Center, so no appointment is necessary to meet her. Swing by and she’ll be waiting with a smile.

WHITE ROCK DOG WALK

Ready to have fun and give back at the same time? Join CHEW Animal Clinic’s 1st Annual White Rock DogWalk/5k on May 7, 2023, along Dallas’ beautiful White Rock Lake. The event will take place at the Stone Tables and Playground and include local vendors, local rescues, and food trucks. Registration is $35 per person and is available online at www.chewac.org.

CHEW Animal Clinic is a one-of-a-kind, 501C3 nonprofit Veterinary clinic in Dallas. They are committed to educating the community on pet care, preventative care, and awareness of the overpopulation of dogs and cats. They offer everything from diagnostics, treatment/ hospitalization, and advanced surgeries including orthopedics for qualified families.

Due to the rising costs in veterinary medicine and families who experience financial hardships, CHEW is often the only option for these chronically sick and/or critically injured pets. Because of CHEW’s vast amount of services,

they are able to help families keep their pets and prevent them from being surrendered to shelters or succumbing to a disease, sickness, or injury. The White Rock Dog Walk is their first fundraiser to jumpstart the expansion of their current clinic, allowing them to grow alongside the continuous and dire needs of the Dallas pet community.

Join CHEW for a fun-filled, active fundraiser to help raise money for a great cause!
