LAST WEEK’S MEETING Kimberly Fish: ECHOES FROM OUR PAST On September 29th Kimberly Fish, Longview author and historian, shed light to the Rotary Club of Longview on the vibrant history of Harmon General Hospital. When the “winds of war” started blowing across Texas in May of 1942, Carl Estes and 29 other local leaders began their efforts to play an important role in WWII and establish an Army hospital in Longview. A 156-acre plot of the James A. Holloway Farm was negotiated for a price, and 5 months later in November 1942, Harmon General Hospital of the Eighth U.S. Army Medical Command sprang to life just south of Longview.

“The natural beauty of East Texas stood as a hallmark of Harmon General. The hospitality, generosity, and natural beauty of our community was embedded in the souls of our soldiers.”, said Kimberly. From escorting our troops for a night out at the REO Palm, to the famous Gray Ladies showering our soldiers with love, Longview residents did their part to be of service. Our city became a vibrant USO district for entertainment, celebrities, and movie stars.

Harmon General Hospital was considered one of the top hospitals in the Eighth U.S. Army Medical Command for its advancements and treatments of syphilis and malaria, its development of the enteric-coated penicillin capsules, and its pathological laboratory that was recognized as the most efficient laboratory in the Eighth Service Command. “The Longview community rose to the occasion in a time of crisis and put aside their personal lives for the greater good.”, said Kimberly. In December 1945 locks were placed on the doors, the 5000 hospital patients and personnel went back to their homes, and Harmon General Hospital was left with empty buildings, corridors, and sidewalks. That all changed in 1946 when Carl Estes flew RG and Evelyn LeTourneau over the abandoned 156 acres. Today the former site of Harmon General Hospital is the main campus of LeTourneau University. Kimberly brought it full circle for our group by stating that “Every year new students of LeTourneau pass through the campus, just like the soldiers did at Harmon General Hospital.”.

This day is our greatest opening to raise funds and awareness for Rotary’s polio eradication efforts. In the face of a pandemic, there is a serious risk of further spread of polio. Donate, share our cause on your social media platforms, and invite others to partner with us in destroying polio. Your aid is more essential than ever so that together we can confront the remaining hurdles and accomplish a polio-free world.

CERTIFICATE OF RECOGNITION PRESENTED TO DISTRICT 5830 A certificate of recognition was given to the Rotary Clubs of District 5830 for its contribution to the construction of a new Triage Facility at the San Benito Hospital in Peten, Guatemala. Our very own Past District Governor Carroll Greenwaldt led the effort to build the center! He also worked with our board to approve seed funding, which was the largest single donation to move the project from idea to reality. $10,000 was raised

by District 5830 and sent to the Tikal Rotary Club, who immediately got busy using a shipping container they had available to construct the triage unit. Of that $10,000, our own Longview Rotary Club raised $2,000 and Past District Governor Carroll Greenwaldt and his wife, Mary Greenwaldt, donated $1,000 to the cause! Carroll has led two Rotary Teams to Guatemala to help in medical clinics, deliver school supplies, and distribute parasite-eradicating medicines to children in under-served, indigenous population areas. The new facility will be used to screen patients and visitors for COVID prior to their entering the hospital building.
