to the types of coworkers we have in education folks counting down days to retirement, bragging about never giving out an “A”, or having an abundance of snarky things to say at every meeting. In our students, these would be the ones who show up and manage to suck the air out of the room with drama the students who won’t do group work and have an excuse for everything. Gonzales encourages people to seek out the marigolds, the people who help you and cheer you on and try to remain positive. These are the people who ask how your class went, ask you to collaborate on things or observe their classes, who speak positively about students and the growth they are seeing. We can’t all be marigolds all the time but being around a walnut for too long can make a thriving environment

Every year our new faculty read an article called The Marigold Effect by Jennifer Gonzales which compares being a teacher to planting a garden. This analogy can be used in our interactions with other faculty and staff, with our students, and in our community when we talk about Mid State. One of our seasoned faculty thought it would be a good idea to bring the Marigold Effect forward to everyone to enjoy.

‘companion plants’. Companion plants protect those around them and cause the whole flowerbed or garden to flourish. The opposite of a marigold, the author states, is a walnut tree because it chokes off the rich soil and sucks nutrients away from other plants. The problem with walnut trees is that they aren’t always aware of their toxicity; they leach toxins and drop nuts that can be harmful to people and pets (if you aren’t aware, Google black walnut trees—yikes!).

Nursing our Nursing program is working on continuous improvement based on their end of program survey on which students said they would like a different style feedback from instructors. The APEX Center hosted a workshop for Nursing faculty learned their own feedback style, then looked at feedback style preferences of younger generations and different personality types. It is always eye opening to look at how someone else might misinterpret or see differently the feedback we give based on style.

INSPIRED TEACHING

Business & Technology in order to stimulate some new ideas for active learning both in the classroom and online, the faculty from business and technology came to the APEX center for a fun two hour technology session. After a brief overview of some “new to them” technology tools, they were given 25 minutes to build a lesson activity with a tool they have never used before. After building the lesson activity, everyone else in the training got to engage with the lesson they built. It was a fun way to discover new technology, see the content that is being taught in other programs (who knew cosmetology was so hard?), and have fun together Bonus faculty left with a developed lesson that they could immediately put into a class.

Treenewables Joe Hoffman, as faculty team lead of a team with three new/almost new faculty, has led his team of arborist technician and renewable energy/construction faculty to identify as the “Treenewable” team. Their big focus this semester is “When course competencies grow up . . . “ They are using time in the APEX to look at all things “competency”. Medical Assistant The MA program, led by program director, Sarah Chojnacki, has an accreditation visit this year and needed a time to build cohesiveness with full/part time faculty, do some creative problem solving, and plan for their accreditation visit. We held an MA Team Building and Accreditation Problem Solving evening in the APEX Center and included food, laughter, team building, and a new solutions to old problems. My favorite part of the evening was how involved the part time faculty got in the planning and many of their ideas and solutions are going to be implemented.

2. Close any open windows you have on the Cynap Screen so you can see the information at the top, find the second IP address

We spent a year teaching with Teams through the Cynap to take advantage of being able to use the Cynap tools, but the Teams app on the Cynap was difficult to log into and a little clunky. We found a better way.

CurMod sounds like a cheese curd sculpture that has been melted over a good campfire, doesn’t it? In reality it is our way of saying, “Anything involving the way your courses and programs are offered is up for review/modification during this window”. From October 1 to November 30, programs and courses are open for you to suggest edits to your Advisory Committees and ALT members. You can make changes (within reason) to course descriptions, pre/corequisites, lecture/lab hours, which courses are in each program, the terms each course is offered, and any changes to course title, number, and credit value. This changes will go into effect for the 2023 24 academic year.

WHAT IS CURMOD SEASON?

Before you get all excited about cleaning house, please realize that HLC gets notified (through a lengthy application) when a certain number of changes are made, and we need to validate those changes with data! Data from program review, student surveys, assessment tracking, comparisons with other colleges, and industry requests may all play a part in why something needs to be modified. Over the last 4 significant changes to many courses and programs and we should be in a period of minor maintenance and fewer changes right now. But if you notice that a course description doesn’t really match the course content, or you are concerned about a semester that is too heavy in lecture/research classes and you need to spread courses out for student success, you should feel empowered to make those suggestions. If our ultimate goal is student success through completion and retention, then any CurMod suggestions should lend themselves to that goal.

The best way to know what is currently in your classes is to review the program guide on the website. This will give you most of the information you need. If the data shows changes are needed, then work with your ALT member to suggest those changes. Sometimes, due to staffing or budget or logistics, a change isn’t possible this time around. Once the CurMod window closes for this year, there are a lot of moving parts behind the scenes that have to fall into place before students start registering in March for next year.
