APRIL ACCOUNTINGDAMLOAAS/PAYROLL

SPECIALIST Like many, I started college and then had to drop out because life threw a few too many curve balls. On January 1, 2018, I resolved to get my degree. I worked full-time during the day and did my online schooling at night and on weekends. I brought homework with me everywhere. For three years, my husband and children supported me. My friends, family and coworkers cheered me on even if they thought I was crazy. I missed my kids’ activities, I took a new job, we started a family kettle corn business, I worked from home during a pandemic while “home schooling” my kids, and I missed spending time with my family and friends. Was it hard? YES. Did I want to give up? YES. But I had two kids watching me work too hard to quit. Did I quit? NO. Even if you don’t think you are capable of something or if you feel like giving up, you are stronger than you think you are, and you can get through it.

ERIN NISSEN LIMITED SCOPE RADIOGRAPHY I realized that what I was previously going to college for was just not a good match with the future lifestyle I desire. I work in the radiology department at the main Sanford hospital in Fargo. I did some research and found the Limited Scope Radiography program at M State and decided that it was going to be the best choice for me. I really enjoy the small class size we have. KATIE STROM ROZANAS IMUSICchose to attend M State because I had heard such great things about the instructors, and specifically the Fine Arts department. The Fergus Falls campus offered smaller class sizes, which I really appreciated. At M State, I felt my instructors took the time to invest in their students. They took the time and energy to make sure I was ready to move on to the next stage in my career – North Dakota State University and beyond. Their care and wisdom allowed me to really dig into each assignment, role and piece of music. This helped me build confidence in my abilities and showed me that taking risks is critical for growth as an artist. Even for students not planning on careers in the arts, the performing arts teach people so many useful life skills – the ability to be flexible, teamwork, dealing well under pressure, empathy and a solid work ethic.

MATT IPLUMBINGGROMMESHTECHNOLOGYwanderedaroundindifferent jobs, trying to find what I was good at. After I took a job in a pool and hot tub store, I learned how to repair them and fix leaks. That became my favorite part of the job, so I decided to look into repair jobs, and plumbing became of interest. I have two kids and work full-time, so the fact that I could go to class once a week in the evenings was a big part of how I managed to go. Any trade program needs to have handson experience to be effective, and this program was set up very well. M State has a mock building set up so you will actually plumb a bathroom, use power tools and learn to solder. We also were actively learning fittings and technical information to be better equipped when we got a job in the STUDENTfield. I went out on a limb by going into a program that is predominantly male and knowing very little about HVAC beforehand. It has definitely been an experience, but an experience full of learning, laughing and making a lot of memories. It turned out to be a blast. My advice to other women in fields dominated by men is to just have confidence in yourself. I have had a great experience, but I want to give a huge shout-out to some amazing guys in my class and the awesome teacher. As long as you prove that you can work hard, you will get the respect

KEILA SCHMITZ IHVAC/Rplanned to go into the medical field, but the more I thought about it, it didn’t suit me. I was looking for a sustainable income in an industry that was projected to grow, and I’d heard that demand for HVAC technicians was on the rise and thought it would be a good gig to get into.
