PRANEETH BODEPUDI

Mina Edkwadi Hi Bond Medical Freshers. Welcome to the beginning of a great career and adventure. To help you on this journey, I’ll impart some of my first-year survival tips. Forming a study group early in the year with supportive, encouraging and positive people motivated me to create good study habits culminating in my academic success. My study group allowed me to actively learn and engage with the content as we would often take turns explaining complicated concepts and regularly quiz each other. I cannot agree more that to teach is to learn twice. I personally found this much more useful than passively reading the textbook or lecture slides. Constantly revising content from previous weeks in comparison to going through it once also helped me retain content in the long term. Lastly, I would recommend getting involved in the different clubs and societies at Bond to try to unwind and de-stress after a day of hard work. Personally, being a member of FOCUS Bond has been a very rewarding experience for me to socialise, make long-lasting friendships, and get involved in fun activities and outings. I wish you all the very best for the year to come and hope you enjoy your time here at Bond

How do you balance home-life with Med School? Balancing home, family, relationships, work, volunteering, and other activities in Med School can be a tough go. You have many aspects pulling in different directions, and it’s difficult to know where to fit everything in. My best advice is be fully present in whatever activity you are currently engaged in. Make sure that if you’re attending class, you’re engaged in the material, asking yourself “Does this make sense? Do I understand what they’re asking?”, be an active participant in your learning. This will make studying the information later simpler, more effective and easier to retain. When you’re with family, be fully present. Don’t worry about whether you should be studying or not, instead really enjoy the moments you’re having with loved ones. Being fully present rather than a perfunctory attitude, will go a long way for mental ease. Another aspect of study-life balance is making time for yourself. Don’t feel like it’s necessary to drop the things that take away from your study schedule that you fully enjoy. Continue playing music, painting, going to the gym, or whatever it is that brings colour to your life. These are the things that we need the most, yet tend to drop away as exams approach, and stress loads rise. As life gets busy, even scheduling an hour a week for the things we love, can help to keep a sense of normalcy. Any study tips or general advice? Don’t feel pressure to study a specific way just because it works for others. If you hate writing notes, but love ANKI and group study? Then utilise what you like best. There is no “right” way to study, so do whatever works best for you. Don’t get bogged down in the minute details. If the lecturer says not to worry about specifics of a certain concept, follow that advice. It’ll save loads of time. Calendars + Scheduling = Your best friend. If you’re uncertain about a topic, or where to focus your attention, utilise the years above you. They are your best resource for what is important (and especially what is not.)

Post grad Advice

Firstly, congratulations and welcome to Bond Medicine! All your hard work has paid off! Before starting at Bond, I completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science with Honours and worked as a tutor at Griffith Uni. I’ve always wanted to be in a career where I could simply just help people - so what better way to do it than through medicine…right? If you’re not from the Gold Coast - welcome! I would highly recommend exploring the city, especially the sunsets at the beach! Get to know people and make friends, while studying is always a load of fun try to make time for yourself. Good luck and feel free to say hi if you ever see me around campus.

Prajwal Timalsena The transition from regular Post-Secondary education to Med School is a gradual one here at Bond, especially in the first semester. Since a majority of students are school leavers, emphasis is placed on bridging the gap between High School and University education. However, as post-secondary students, this does not mean we have an easy go. This transition period is a perfect time to sharpen up your study methods and figure out what really works for you. In previous study, we may have had time to slowly study, mull over ideas, and revisit several times to truly understand it. Med School? No chance. There is a steady influx of information to be sorted through, understood and applied. This steadily increases each semester, and by second year you are smacked in the face with how much is expected of you. So, the transition period is a perfect opportunity to really hone-in on what study methods work for you and will give you the highest reward for maximal efficiency.

Originally from Toronto in Canada, I finished my BSc in Exercise Science but always wished to travel the world. My first opportunity with Bond University gave me a Doctor of Physiotherapy degree allowing to help enrich lives through exercise-based rehabilitation. I'm excited to have taken the next steps into the Bond Medical program in order to further advance my professional skills and help out my community! During the program we are fortunate to have countless opportunities to make a difference to those who need it most locally, throughout Australia, and elsewhere in the world. I'm eager to see where I go next!

BOND MEDICINE 101 BOND MEDICINE IS THE FASTEST PATHWAY TO GET A MEDICAL DEGREE IN AUSTRALIA. HENCE WITHOUT SAYING IT IS ONE OF THE MOST UNIQUE. BELOW WE HAVE A SUMMARY OF 1ST YEAR IN MTERMS OF ACADEMICS TO GIVE YOU A TASTE.

STRUCTURE Unlike other university degrees, where you will have multiple papers/classes to take, here at Bond you'll only have 1 subject = Medicine. This subject will be split into three themes, as listed below.

- SCIENTIST AND SCHOLAR This is your bread and butter theme. This covers your science content which includes your anatomy and physiology and a little bit of pathology in 1st year. Mainly taught through lectures, it is followed up by labs/workshops during the week to establish your knowledge.

- HAP Health and Advocate Professional theme aka HAP is the theme that deals with medical ethics, morals and dilemmas. you will have separate lectures for them throughout the week.

- PRACTITIONER This is theme which allows you to put your theory into practise. Starting off with performing history taking with simulated patients to learning how to take vital signs, this theme will definitely bring the doctor out from you.
