PERFORMANCE SEASON

welcome

As always, our talented students will have the opportunity to perform alongside MSM’s world-renowned faculty, special guests, and master class artists in our own venues and on a range of NYC stages that includes The Riverside Theatre, Harlem Stage, Merkin Concert Hall, and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center, among others. This season also marks the premiere of the “MSM Icons” series celebrating acclaimed MSM alumni and trustees with exceptional international musical careers; the series launch will feature trustees Leonard Slatkin and Terence Blanchard, and alumnus and Jazz Arts faculty member Ron Carter. On the cover and throughout these pages, you’ll be reminded of last season’s Centennial events, including our Gala Concert at Carnegie Hall, the grand opening of our new campus entrance and beautifully renovated Neidorff-Karpati Hall, and the many other Centennial-themed concerts that added luster to our 100th season. I hope that these images remind you (as they do me) of what makes this place so very special. They are not merely evidence of the accomplished work that graces our many stages and those of our esteemed New York City partners; they also remind us of our shared sense of purpose, our commitment that all are welcome here, and our strong conviction that the performing arts can provide a measure of uplift and consolation during tumultuous times.

It is my true pleasure to welcome one and all to Manhattan School of Music’s 2019–20 performance season — the first of our second century! Although the magic dust is still settling on last season’s Centennial celebrations, all of us at MSM are eager to raise the curtain on another singular season of classical, jazz, and musical theatre works. This season’s offerings represent a remarkable variety of programming across hundreds of performances and eight thrilling months: from jazz tributes to Art Blakey, Louis Armstrong, and MSM alumni Hugh Masekela and Miguel Zenón to fully staged opera and musical theatre productions, including Mercadante’s I due Figaro, Flotow’s Martha, Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, and MSM alumnus Rupert Holmes’s The Mystery of Edwin Drood; from performances by MSM Artists in Residence American String Quartet and Windscape to large-scale works from the MSM Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Chorus; from intimate student recitals to a full season of Saturday concerts from the Precollege Division.

As we prepare for the launch of MSM’s next 100 years, I know that our 2019–20 season will bring with it not just thrills and inspiration but edification, that palpable sense of something larger than ourselves that is unique to the experience of live music at its best. We look forward to offering many such moments in the days, weeks, and months ahead.
