Manhattan School of Music’s programs of study for Jazz Arts majors are designed to develop skilled performers, composers, arrangers and jazz educators in preparation for careers in jazz music. Systematic and rigorous conservatory training, combined with a myriad of performance and networking opportunities in New York City, make this program one of the richest of its kind for young jazz musicians.

The MSM Jazz Orchestra performs regularly with major artists such as Eliane Elias, Jon Faddis, Bob Mintzer, Dave Liebman, Wynton Marsalis, and Phil Woods. DownBeat magazine annually recognizes students in the Jazz Orchestra with its Student Awards.

The MSM Concert Jazz Band performs two concerts a year in MSM’s Borden Auditorium or other venues. It is dedicated to performing the classic big band arrangements of Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, and many others, and also performs an annual concert of big band arrangements by Jazz Arts students.

The MSM Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra is dedicated to performing the music of la tradición and pays homage to legends such as Mario Bauzá, Paquito D’Rivera, Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, and Ray Santos.

The MSM Chamber Jazz Ensemble includes students from both the Classical and Jazz Arts divisions, performing works for small chamber orchestra. Past concerts have included a re-creation of Oliver Nelson’s classic recording, Blues and the Abstract Truth; an evening with Joe Lovano and Judi Silvano performing the music of Frank Sinatra arranged by the late Manny Albam; and Mary Lou Williams’s legendary Zodiac Suite.

MSM Jazz Philharmonic Justin DiCioccio, Conductor The MSM Jazz Philharmonic provides a platform for students from the Classical and Jazz Arts programs to bridge the gap between classical, jazz, popular, show, and media music.

It is dedicated to performing original compositions combining jazz rhythms, harmonies, and improvisation with contemporary techniques.

MSM Jazz Arts Combos The Jazz Arts combos—for all Jazz Arts performance majors—perform at least twice a year, presenting a rich variety of music.
