Whether you cast your vote via paper ballot (found in our stores) or via paperless, online voting, electing your next co-op representatives makes a difference for Mississippi Market.

Both online and paper voting options are secure, confidential and convenient. Many of you will receive an email with a link to vote online and any member can use this address to place their vote online:

(Please note the “https://” before the address. This indicates a secure site and must be included for the address to work).

You will need your member-owner number and the last name of the official stockholder on the account to log in. Please keep in mind that while co-op memberships may be used by the whole household, just one member of the household is the official stockholder and just one vote may be placed. It is the stockholder’s last name that must be used for the login.

If you would prefer to vote on paper, you will find ballots available in the stores at the at the voting stations in the seating areas. You will also need your member number and the stockholder’s last name to vote in store. Ballots will also be available during the first part of the annual meeting.

Join us as we share a meal prepared by our deli chefs and hear about St. Paul’s local food innovations from speaker Fred Haberman.

The Great Hall is easily accessible by bus, bicycle or automobile.

Fifteen different bus routes stop directly in front of the Great Hall and there are 4 Nice Ride bike sharing stations within 2 blocks. A parking ramp is directly across Fifth Street from the Great Hall and evening rates are $5. Some street parking is also available nearby, with meters free in the evening. We recommend allowing extra time for parking— registration opens at 5:30 pm and dinner begins promptly at 6pm!

In September 2012, we launched our new delivery service—Mississippi Market At Your Door! We hope this service will bring our products and services to an even wider audience.

Do you ever get tired of hearing a cashier ask for your member number? Do you wonder why they bother? We track your purchases because as a cooperative we return profits generated from doing business with members, back to members, proportional to your shopping with us.

For the year ending June 30, 2012 our sales were $22,357,662; up 13.15% from the prior year. We had net operating income of $925,762—a very good year indeed! This is income derived from doing business with members and non-members, as well as patronage income received from other co-ops. As authorized by our bylaws, we are once again doing a qualified patronage refund later in October. This year we will be distributing $132,009 in vouchers that may be spent at the register or redeemed for cash, and $468,032 in Class B stock.

A letter will go out in October explaining the details.

Another way you help strengthen your co-op is by sharing your thoughts with us. Some of you may remember being asked to participate in a survey a few months ago. Our board and staff are guided by our member-owner survey each year, and we want to share the highlights with you. This year’s results show an increase in child-free households among members, more frequent shopping trips, and the huge importance of freshness and quality in our product selection. Looking toward the future, members favored using co-op resources to support local food systems innovation and improving existing stores and services. Good news! Our annual meeting speaker, Fred Haberman, will be highlighting St. Paul’s growing local

foods system, we have more improvements planned for the Selby store and the Mississippi Market At Your Door delivery service is up and running! Many thanks to those of you who responded to our survey. We really value the input and want you to know that we are listening and your input helps us do a better job of providing value to our members.

Recently Mississippi Market has been in conversation with the Gateway Food Initiative, a group working to get a co-op started on the East Side of St. Paul. We have been very supportive of their efforts. In our conversations with them we have come to a mutual sense that if the project were right, it would be ideal for Mississippi Market to take a leadership role, and open a store to serve members and potential members in that area. A potential project has come up, and the Market is in discussions with the City about being part of the multi-use development being considered for a site across the street from Swede Hollow, on East 7th. We are very early in the “thinking” process on this, and expect to keep you informed, and engaged, as things develop.

Finally, we are wrapping up the International Year of the Co-op by planning a lovely member meeting and dinner at the Great Hall. While we found the Harriet Island Pavilion a delightful space, we are excited that our annual meeting attendance has grown to a point where we need a larger venue. This is a good problem to have! I hope you will join us on October 25th to hear our keynote speaker, enjoy a meal, and help us celebrate another excellent year of your local cooperative.

As a member-owner, you can help steer the strategy of Mississippi Market through the board of directors.

New this year This year Mississippi Market member- owners have the opportunity to vote for three non-profit organizations to share $14,000 in grant money from the co-op (see page 6 for a list of the eligible organizations).

During profitable years the board can vote to distribute patronage refunds to members, in proportion with their spending at the co-op. Out of thousands of active members, there are always some patronage refunds that go unclaimed. We make every effort to reach these members by mail, but some have moved away or choose not to cash their checks.

Several years’ worth of those funds have now accumulated and our board would like you to choose how the community can benefit from this money.

When voting for the board of directors, you will be able to vote for the organization(s) you think should receive these funds.

Do you remember why you joined Mississippi Market?

Many of us join because there are fabulous benefits to ownership, from owner deals to receiving this newsletter that you are currently reading. As a transplant to the area, I entered the doors of Mississippi Market for the first time because I needed to pick up a grocery item that I forgot. I continued shopping at Mississippi Market because I discovered the quality and diversity of food. Ultimately, I became a member-owner of Mississippi Market because I was excited to find a community-focused organization that placed an emphasis on locally grown, healthy foods.

As a member-owner of a cooperative, our privileges are more significant than just receiving a discount. Have you ever been asked, what is so different about being a member-owner at Mississippi Market versus becoming a member of the large warehouse discount stores like Costco or Sam’s? The quick response can always be “the food.”

However, another important distinction is related to the cooperative principles, and specifically the 2nd Cooperative Principle, Democratic Member Control.

As a member-owner, you can help steer the strategy of Mississippi Market through the board of directors. The board of directors represents the interest of member-owners. Additionally, they ensure the cooperative is fiscally sound and running according to the bylaws and policies set by the board. If you are interested in seeing this action, feel free to come to a monthly board meeting.

Simply voting for the Mississippi Market board is an effective way to participate in this principle.

As we get closer to state and national elections, voting may already be on your mind. You also can vote for the individuals that will represent you as a member-owner of Mississippi Market on the board of directors. I’m pleased to say our current board contains a diverse mix of individuals from various functional areas, industries, personal backgrounds, and demographics. All are passionate about food and love this co-op and the communities we serve.

We are excited to have five candidates running for the available seats in this upcoming election. Two of the candidates currently serve on the board.

All candidates bring a great set of skills to the board. Please get to know the candidates by reading the information found in this newsletter or reading their listing on www.msmarket.coop.

There are many options to vote.

Take advantage of the one that is most convenient for you. Feel free to vote in the store or online for this year’s candidates. Also, don’t forget to mark your calendar for our annual meeting!

Cooperatives are democratic organizations controlled by their members, who actively participate in setting their policies and making decisions. Men and women serving as elected representatives are accountable to the membership.

In primary co-operatives members have equal voting rights (one member, one vote) and co-operatives at other levels are also organized in a democratic manner.

innovate and operate efficiently, but most importantly remind people of the uniqueness and power of cooperative businesses.

The co-op is a constant reminder of what we, as a group, can do to shape our communities. That a choice as simple as where we decide to buy our groceries, can have a far-reaching impact on our economy and environment. We can support local farmers and businesses at the same time improving local neighborhoods by simply choosing where we spend our everyday dollars.

The co-op also plays a vital role in the community as trusted advisor and educator, helping create a more informed, connected and vital community.

Become the most trusted advisor: Using technology effectively to provide information to our members about their purchases would take us one step closer to becoming a trusted advisor. An example of this could be to connect the products that a member purchases to some of the latest research about that produce in an email. Another might be to provide them with points

based on how healthy the foods are that they purchased; the healthier the foods, the higher the score.

Since being appointed to Mississippi Market Board earlier this year, I have had the opportunity to learn from and contribute to the dialogue between the board, the employees and the members of Mississippi Market.

As the VP, eDiscovery Operations for Merrill Corporation, I have learned to be a trusted advisor to our clients and help them navigate through complex Legal and Financial issues.

Also, I have worked with nonprofits in various governing and non-governing capacities over the last decade.

I am passionate about the nutritional and health benefits of unprocessed, organic foods and ensuring access to and knowledge about these products in the community.

The increase in organic and/or local product availability through the larger, national retailers is both an opportunity and a challenge for the co-op. The increase in competitors is clearly a constant challenge to the co-op. However, I think there is a great opportunity for the co-op to differentiate itself by continuing to offer a superior personal, community-based shopping experience which is able to respond to customers’ demands for products and educational resources. I also believe there is a great opportunity for the co-op to partner with other organizations (in both the public and private sector) in the community to build brand awareness as well as

provide access to education about the power of nutrition and sourcing food locally.

I believe the co-op’s role is to create and foster a community which supports access to local, unprocessed, organic products. Additionally, I believe the co-op should be a premier educational resource to increase the community’s awareness of the benefits of healthy, unprocessed food and the power nutrition has on health. Finally, I believe the co-op should always strive to be an employer of choice in the community.

Strategic Priority #2: Become the most trusted advisor—One of the Board’s primary responsibilities is to continuously work to strengthen and deepen the relationships within the community to ensure the co-op is viewed as an expert resource and advisor. This could include partnering with organizations to provide classes and other educational resources, in the process helping to remove misconceptions about the co-op. I believe this priority is also directly linked to priority #5 (Support and develop an engaged work force); the Board must ensure the employees are engaged and embody the values and goals of the co-op as they are the daily interface to the customers and vendors.

I have 15 years of professional experience in accounting/finance in the banking and financial services industry. This includes leading complex projects and teams, extensive research and analytical skills, communication with diverse audiences and cultures, strong management capabilities and developing and maintaining long-term client relationships. Additionally, I have previously served on the Board and Finance Committee of a small non-profit, Family Focus.

I believe in and support the co-op principles and the entire notion of local and organic food. I am willing to work hard as a board member to support Mississippi Market, its mission, members and all who choose to shop and participate.

I believe our biggest opportunity is to educate consumers on the real value of local and organic food, and the choices we all have when it comes to food. By real value, I mean the environmental impact of sustainable and organic food production, the personal health and wellness benefits, and the impact of one’s food dollar staying in and supporting a regional food economy.

One challenge I worry about is the future availability of enough local and organic food to meet demand. As greater numbers of people purchase and consume the type of foods the co-op provides, I worry that demand will eventually exceed supply.

I believe the existing Co-op Ends Policy answers this question quite clearly. Mississippi Market creates positive change in the local and global community. As a result of all that we do, our community will have: • A co-operatively-owned retail source for fresh, locally produced and healthful food that is conveniently available at fair prices.

• Community, customers and staff who are better educated about the interconnectedness of food, health and the environment.

• An increasingly robust and sustainable local food economy.

• Financially sustainable operations that support and yield economic, social and environmental returns.

Strategic Priority: Foster growth in the local food economy.

In order to drive this priority the board must be proactive in the overall success of the co-op. A prosperous, financially sound co-op allows the board and management to think toward the future and aggressively work on strategic priorities. Co-op activities that support this include the Eat Local Challenge and the annual Eat Local Farm Tour.

Once people make the connection of local food and its impact on our region, demand increases and the co-op is driven to increase local purchases.

While it is unrealistic to think the market can sell only local food, I believe well managed growth and expansion only increases motivation in the region to produce more organic and sustainable food. If the market has the capacity to buy/sell more locally produced food, growers and producers in the region

will have a place to consistently sell their products.

Over the past 23 years I have worked in the continuing education and customized training divisions of five different two-year colleges in Minnesota.

In working with hundreds of Minnesota organizations and businesses on employee training-and-development initiatives, I have learned the arts of active listening to gain a thorough understanding of needs, and then strategizing to help constituents meet their goals.

I am currently the Mississippi Market board secretary and serve on the Executive, Finance, and Policy committees. I am also a board member on the Kenosha Condominium Association.

Also on the ballot: This year, in addition to electing their board representatives, Mississippi Market member-owners will have the opportunity to choose three non-profit organizations to share a $14,000 grant from the co-op. Thanksgiving Turkeys locally raised & free-range

s in years past, we will have two varieties of free-range, all-natural, locally raised turkey. Kadejan provides our fresh turkeys and Schultz provides our organic birds which are only available frozen. Both varieties will be available in a wide selection of sizes as “first-come, first-serve” in both of our stores. Look for signs posted daily as to estimated delivery times and size options.

Plus, this year we’ll also be taking pre-orders for both varieties of turkeys. If you are interested in this option, please fill out an order form at our customer service desks, in our meat departments or at msmarket.coop. We will take pre-orders for Thanksgiving turkeys from October 9-November 9.

If you’re looking for something beyond turkey for your Thanksgiving spread, we’ll also have ducks, hams, roasts, vegetarian options and more.

Roasted Sweet Potatoes Preheat oven to 425° You can use as many sweet potatoes should be shiny with oil. as you want for this marvelous dish. You’ll learn how to choose fibers, wash them, blend them (say, wool and silk, bamboo and alpaca) for color and texture by carding and combing, draft, and spin. You’ll receive a fine maple spindle as part of your class fee, along with raw fiber to process at home, roving to practice with, and extensive handouts.

Jan has taught spindling for years, including at Shepherd’s Harvest Festival, and she’s eager to help you discover and master the ancient art of creating homespun on the simple, portable spindle.

Secrets of Vegan Baking (DT) Take the mystery out of vegan baking and discover some simple tips for tasty vegan treats. We’ll make chocolate chip cookies with dates, red velvet cupcakes, and banana bread.

World Food Day: Co-ops Working Together to End Hunger

In the world’s wealthiest nation, no child should grow up hungry.

Yet over the course of a year, more than 16 million children in America cannot count on having enough nutritious food. That’s one in five kids in America today who struggle with hunger.

Both stores will be open from 8:00 am - 2:30 pm on November 22nd.

We can help. World Food Day is October 16. In support of this worldwide event designed to increase awareness, understanding and action around hunger issues, Mississippi Market is joining other food co-ops across the country to raise $100,000 for Share our Strength’s No Kid Hungry® campaign, a national effort to end childhood hunger in America.

Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry® campaign is ending childhood hunger— by connecting kids to the healthy food they need, every day. No Kid Hungry brings together governors, mayors, businesses, chefs, federal and state agencies, educators and community leaders to connect children at risk of hunger with food and nutrition programs where they live, learn and play. No Kid Hungry also teaches families how to cook healthy, affordable meals through Cooking Matters® and invests in community organizations that fight hunger.

Shop with us on October 13th. Mississippi Market will donate 1.5% of all sales from Saturday, October 13.

Also, No Kid Hungry will be our October EcoStamp recipient. Bring in your reusable bags and donate the 5¢ or round up at the register. Plus, you can take the No Kid Hungry Pledge at NoKidHungry.org.
