The Great Minnesota Float-Off June 28 – both stores 11:30am-3:00pm

Back in May, we tried to concoct the perfect alternative to a root beer float. Each store held a big (and important) meeting to determine which ice cream float our delis would make in July.

We tasted and sampled and voted. In the end there was no clear winner— each store had its own favorite! So, we’re turning it over to you. Stop by during the Great Minnesota Selby’s Pick Float-Off to cast your vote for which refreshing drink our deli should feature in July.

Twin Cities co-ops demonstrate how growth can be good—for everyone Gail Graham, General Manager

In April I attended a presentation by Cooperative Development Services (CDS) case study* authors Joan Stockinger and Dave Gutknecht on the impact the Twin Cities Food Co-op system has had on our local food economy. They aggregated data from numerous sources to create this profile of our thriving regional network of cooperatives, which connect producers and consumers to ensure a healthy local food sector.

At the time of the study the greater metro area had 15 cooperatives with 17 storefronts and 91,000 member owners.

Our total retail sales in the year leading up to the study were $179,000,000 ($179M)—with approximately 30%, or $54M from sales of local products.

That’s a lot of lettuce!

As our co-ops have grown, so too has our impact on creating a resilient and vibrant local food system. We attract shoppers and members who share values around food issues, and we work hard to educate and empower members, and forge a connection between them and the growers. We have a commitment to local sourcing —it is part of our value proposition, not merely a convenient marketing approach. Our co-ops are recognized as being excellent partners by our local producers: that our growers need to receive a fair price based on their cost structure in order for the system to be sustainable.

It would be great to rest on our laurels, and toast our success—but it is premature for that. The work to build a sustainable local food system is ongoing.

Minnesota is a strong agricultural state. However, the USDA 2012 Census

of Agriculture noted that between 2007 and 2012, the number of farms in Minnesota fell by 8%. But large farms, those with 2,000 acres or more, grew by 13.6%. Our local growers tend to be on the opposite end of that continuum— they are the small farms, the ones more likely to struggle to stay in business.

The CDS case study points out that our system is operating at near capacity and that to be truly sustainable many local producers need to grow. And for local producers to grow, retailers, especially our cooperatives, need to grow.

A more vibrant community is possible when we see what we share.

In our co-ops we share a vision of a growing, sustainable model of local enterprise. We share an understanding that our collective power can help us come together for the common good.

We share a belief that the greater our economic impact the louder our voice can be.

Co-ops are people-centered businesses driving social innovation.

We have done a terrific job at creating a growing market for our local producers and creating change in our food system.

The impact that we have as cooperatives in our community is a direct result of our members-owners using the co-op.

This is a great way to learn about how you can serve on the board.

One of the things about Minnesota life I find particularly amusing is the “spring emergence.” Not the one when the flowers finally push through the thawing ground, but the one where we and our neighbors finally get outside long enough for a conversation. After not having seen each other since late fall—except perhaps as hooded and insulated two-legged blobs quickly shuffling between the car and house—we finally get a chance to catch up and share news. The funniest encounters are between parents of babies born during the winter and neighbors who had forgotten the other family was expecting!

Mississippi Market staff will be out and about a lot these coming months sharing the news about tasty and healthy food, progress on our new store, and co-op values at events such as Rondo Days, Saint Paul Saints games, and the Eat Local Farm Tour. The board of directors has also been discussing ways to get out among you, our fellow memberowners. In the past, we met some of you at “Coffee with the Board” events.

The member-owners who came found these valuable for sharing their concerns and ideas and asking questions, and we want more of you to have the same opportunity. We’re considering having board members attend more tasting and other Market events, and we have two “meet-and-greet” events coming up. We are always open to your ideas, and if you have suggestions for good ways to engage with you—we’re all ears.

A great one-time opportunity to work alongside board members and perform a valuable service for the co-op and your fellow member-owners is to participate in the co-op’s annual financial health checkup. This process, more commonly known as an annual audit, is as vital to ensuring the co-op’s well-being as an annual medical checkup is for making sure you or your loved ones’ health is in good shape. Just as a doctor will measure your vital signs and ask you questions about your health habits (“Why yes, I do eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. I’m a member-owner of Mississippi Market!), every year an independent auditor reviews the co-op’s financial vitals: its statements, records, and practices. The audit committee reviews the auditor’s report to ensure—on behalf of all member-owners—that we are engaging in “financially sustainable operations that support and yield economic, social and environmental returns” (to quote one of our Ends statements).

ississippi Market is partnering with Roots for the Home Team this summer to bring you their fresh and healthy salads in our deli. Youth involved in Roots for the Home Team grow their own ingredients for salads, use their inventiveness to help develop recipes and sell their creations at Target Field during Minnesota Twins weekend home games. Roots for the Home Team creates life-enhancing opportunities for young people, and partners with youth garden programs in ethnically diverse areas of the Twin Cities, such as Urban Roots and Youth Farm.

Mississippi Market is excited to show off the culinary talents of Roots for the Home Team participants and sharing their salads with you. By including their salads alongside our own deli options, we get to highlight this awesome program and help the kids reach a larger audience.

1 ½ cups yellow wax beans*, cut into ¼ - inch pieces 1 cup sliced radishes 1 cup frozen and thawed or fresh shelled edamame 1 ½ cups red or green grapes, halved ½ cup torn Thai or sweet basil ½ cup sliced green onions *Substitute green or purple beans for the wax beans

Mela’s Tater Thorne Salad An awesome potato salad with several garden vegetables including kale, radishes, and carrots. Tossed in a delicious vinaigrette and topped with blue cheese crumbles.

Kickin’ Quinoa Salad: Full of crisp fresh garden vegetables and a smooth zippy dressing and topped off with sunflower seeds!

Big Bang Seoul Salad A Korean noodle salad loaded with fresh vegetables, topped with cashews and features Korean Gochujang chili sauce.

Very Tasty!

Calliya Pizza Salad Orzo pasta with fresh basil, garlic and veggies. Tossed in a red wine vinaigrette and parmesan cheese.

Dressing & Garnishes ¼ cup rice vinegar ¼ cup canola or peanut oil 2 Tbsp white miso paste 2 Tbsp grated fresh ginger 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice ½ med. Jalapeño chile, seeded and coarsely chopped 1 Tbsp honey 2 Tbsp toasted sesame oil Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper to taste 4 cups mixed spring salad greens 3 Tbsp black or toasted white sesame seeds Method 1. Mix all the salad ingredients in a large bowl.

2. To make the dressing, combine vinegar, canola or peanut oil, miso paste, ginger, lemon juice, chile, honey and sesame oil to blender container. Blend until smooth.

3. Stir half of dressing into salad. Spoon salad onto mixed greens; drizzle with remaining dressing to taste. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.

s you walk through the aisles of your co-op, picking up that fresh, crisp, leafy green lettuce from Gardens of Eagan or grabbing that glass milk bottle, cream top of course, from Cedar Summit Farms, do you ever wonder how that fresh produce or milk made it to the shelves of your co-op? What do bees, goats, and vegetables have in common anyway? Sure, their products are all for sale at your local Co-op, but why does that matter? These are all great questions that can be answered by attending the 2014 Eat Local Farm Tour. Don’t stay in the dark about your food—get connected!

By purchasing local products, you are supporting your local farmers by providing them a fair price for the food that they grow and produce for you.

The farmers, together with the Twin Cities Co-ops, would like to invite you to a day out on their farms. Join us on Saturday, July 19 as you explore the 6

local foodshed, visit with your farmers, and learn how they grow or make your food. The Eat Local Farm Tour, now in its fourth year, continues to grow and educate communities on what good and real food is, while providing a place for you to really get in touch with what you are consuming.

You will find the scenery on the farms in the countryside to be picturesque: rolling hills, lush green land, happy cows!

Your urban farm tour could include some fun folks on bikes in bee costumes that will lead you to the sweet honey and bees that produce it for you! You get to decide how you best want to connect to your food. Consider packing a picnic lunch for your family and taking in the beauty of the countryside. The co-ops also welcome you to stop by for lunch.

You don’t need to be a member to shop at the co-ops and you will find many of the foods that you saw in the fields, on our

shelves. It’s that fresh!

At the board level, Deanna Foster from the Dayton’s Bluff District Council and John Flory from the Latino Economic Development Center were guests at our board of directors retreat to share their thoughts on what is important for Mississippi Market to understand about the needs, challenges, and opportunities of neighborhoods on the east side of St. Paul.

At the community level, Gail, our general manager attended the Strategic Philanthropy: Developing Community Partnerships on the East Side meeting on April 8th to learn more about the neighborhood and get connected with organizations working in the community. In addition, Liz, our consumer affairs manager has added the Dayton’s Bluff Early Childhood and Family Education program to her roster of free healthy eating classes that the co-op teaches in St. Paul.
