Opening on East 7th Street in 2015! Your support will help to make it happen! Member-owner loans are the foundation of co-op financing. They demonstrate the co-op’s success, provide equity, and will be essential for securing financing to purchase land and build a new store. To finance this $8.64 million project, we will need to secure $1 million in member-owner loans and class C stock purchases. Any Mississippi Market member-owner who is a resident of Minnesota may participate in this investment in our cooperative and our local economy. As with any financial decision, there are risks and benefits you will want to evaluate. Join us for an information session (no commitment necessary) to find out more:
T
wo and a half years ago, Beth Butterfield and Sarah Geving dedicated themselves to bringing healthy, local and ethically produced foods to their neighborhood by forming the Gateway Food Co-op. Now, Mississippi Market is committed to fulfilling the Gateway Food Co-op’s mission to bring a sustainable, natural foods cooperative to the East Side of St. Paul by opening a store at 740 EAST 7th Street in 2015. Now is a time for celebration…and also time to begin work in earnest. Planning for the store is still in the early stages, with member-owner and community input being sought along the way. The planned 15,500 square foot store, which will be located at the corner of East 7th Street and Maple, near Metropolitan State University and across from Swede Hollow Café, will likely house a commissary kitchen to cook our madefrom-scratch deli foods for all three locations. We have heard from member-owners and East St. Paul residents that a teaching kitchen/classroom will be an important feature for this store, along with a seating area to enjoy meals. Plans are underway to reach out to residents of the ethnically diverse East side to explore how Mississippi Market can serve the community and complement existing small businesses in the neighborhood.

“ I shop locally to buy locally grown food, so it only makes sense to lend locally, too.” —Dave, member-owner & lender “ I’m lending to help build the East 7th store because I believe in the transformative powers of community-owned businesses.” —Nabeel, board member & lender “ We made a loan because we wanted our community-owned grocery store to be available to more people in more neighborhoods.” —The Johnson family, member-owners & lenders
