wo and a half years ago, Beth Butterfield and Sarah Geving dedicated themselves to bringing healthy, local and ethically produced foods to their neighborhood by forming the Gateway Food Co-op. Now, Mississippi Market is committed to fulfilling the Gateway Food Co-op’s mission to bring a sustainable, natural foods cooperative to the East Side of St. Paul by opening a store at 740 EAST 7th Street in 2015.

Now is a time for celebration…and also time to begin work in earnest. Planning for the store is still in the early stages, with member-owner and community input being sought along the way. The planned 15,500 square foot store, which will be located at the corner of East 7th Street and Maple, near Metropolitan State University and across from Swede Hollow Café, will likely house a commissary kitchen to cook our madefrom-scratch deli foods for all three locations. We have heard from member-owners and East St. Paul residents that a teaching kitchen/classroom will be an important feature for this store, along with a seating area to enjoy meals. Plans are underway to reach out to residents of the ethnically diverse East side to explore how Mississippi Market can serve the community and complement existing small businesses in the neighborhood.

Co-ops are economic institutions that exist to meet a need. When the “new wave” of food co-ops, which Mississippi Market is a part of, started back in the 1970’s, fresh-faced college students wanted wholesome unprocessed food that wasn’t overly packaged. When they had trouble meeting that need they started their own co-op buying clubs and storefronts.

Fast forward 40 years and co-ops have evolved into important players in what has become the “natural foods industry.”

Are we still meeting a need in this crowded, competitive environment?

I believe we are. We help change the conversation around food. We still sell great food and we continue to create positive change in our communities.

We do this in a variety of ways—as the articles in this month’s Market Medley reflect.

“Improving access to healthful foods” has become part of a national conversation. For many years we have worked to help people discover how to “Shop Co-op on a Budget” and learn how to stretch their food dollars.

This year we are taking it to a new level.

On page 4 we present the LIME program, an exciting new program designed to make it easier for people with limited means to join and support our co-op.

In March we will once again

participate in the annual Minnesota FoodShare campaign, and leverage your dollars to help replenish our neighborhood food shelves. According to “Hunger Solutions” Minnesota’s 300 food shelves are on pace to exceed 3 million visits for the third consecutive year. We are proud to once again collaborate with co-ops from across the state to be a part of this important work to help meet the needs of our fellow citizens.

And last but by no means least, our cover article updates you on our continued progress toward opening a third store and on the launch of our member loan campaign.

Healthy citizens are the foundation of healthy communities, and convenient access to delicious, healthful foods is an important component of building healthy communities. At Mississippi Market we do more than just sell great food; we also educate people about food.

We do this in our stores by training our staff to help answer questions and by offering classes in our classrooms; in the community by regularly presenting to groups such as Early Childhood Family Education; and in public schools by funding the Midwest Food Connection, the nonprofit that provides free classes to elementary schools helping our kids to learn how to make healthy choices.

We remain very excited about the opportunity to serve St. Paul with the proposed store on East 7th. But opening a new store will require a substantial investment and our bankers want us to show we are serious by raising some of our money from our member-owners.

I believe an investment in Mississippi Market is a sound, socially responsible vehicle for creating positive change.

When we invest in the growth of our cooperative we are investing in our community. I invite each of us to become a member-lender and help make this dream a reality.

Board of Directors Report

Our co-op’s growth goals find fertile soil in partnership with Gateway Food Co-op Jon Olson, Board Chair The Mississippi Market Board of Directors routinely reviews the policies that shape our work, and we make changes that support current goals and activities.

A couple of years ago we had a policy called the “Expansion Policy,” aptly named and created specifically to guide us as we built the West 7th Street store.

Working with our general manager, Gail Graham, the board has revised that section of our policy manual to create our current Growth Policy (which can be found in the About Us section of msmarket.coop).

The new policy reflects a broader vision; rather than focusing on one project or a single facility, it includes other types of growth— membership, personnel, professional development, commercial partnerships, building expansion, and more.

In response to membership growth of 100 or more members per month for the last two years, we have: improved and expanded our Selby parking lot; remodeled the Selby Store; added a full-service meat counter at the West 7th location, and put a 1,430 square-foot addition on that store, as well.

All the while, we’ve had an eye on

the possibility of another store somewhere in St. Paul, because demand for the type of food we provide continues to grow.

With perfect timing, along came the founders of the Gateway Food Co-op from the East 7th Street neighborhood, with an invitation to work with them and bring Mississippi Market Co-op to their community.

Here’s where I’d like to say the rest is history—but that would be premature, as the seeds for growth have just been planted and the real work is now beginning. History shows that most cooperatives start from some type of grass-roots effort, and the well-organized Gateway group began exactly that way.

Now they want to build on their success, while helping us to fulfill our plans for growth—and do it in a neighborhood that needs our services.

Mississippi Market’s board members are 100 percent behind this growth initiative, because we have seen the commitment and courage being brought by the Gateway Co-op members. We’re confident that the East 7th neighborhood will support us, and we have the best management and staff we could possibly have. In addition, we value the input of our co-op members, and thank those who attended our listening session on January 16. We were privileged to hear about your commitment, listen to your concerns and collect your ideas as we take Mississippi Market into a new year of “growing forward.”

Limited Income Membership Entry Limited Income Membership Entry (LIME) program We all know that there are people struggling to gain access to healthy foods.

There are so many barriers for people: from unfamiliarity with cooking to limited transportation, to agricultural policies that support unhealthy eating.

Mississippi Market works diligently with our communities and organizations across the state to improve food access and education.

We offer free tours and abundant classes, support Midwest Food Connection in teaching school children about healthy eating, and lead co-ops across the state in giving to the Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign.

But when one is on a limited income, the barriers to healthy eating can be monumental.

Perhaps you’ve experienced this yourself.

Ten percent of Minnesotans are food insecure, or do not have reliable access to enough nutritious food. While some of our member-owners are undoubtedly among this number, we know that we can do a better job reaching out to those

in our community who are struggling to afford healthy food.

This is why we created a new program that will provide equitable opportunities to participate in co-op member-ownership and enjoy local and sustainable foods on a limited income.

It’s called the LIME program, or Limited Income Membership Entry.

The LIME program includes both a membership payment plan and a discount component, which may be used individually or combined.

Anyone enrolled in financial assistance programs (SNAP/EBT, WIC, SSD, Supplemental Security Income, Section 8 housing, Refugee Cash Assistance and General Assistance) may qualify.

The LIME membership payment plan allows a qualifying shopper to join Mississippi Market Co-op and enjoy full membership benefits with just a $12 stock purchase. Remaining payments are made with their household’s earned patronage dividends until the full $90 payment is reached.

The LIME discount gives memberowners who qualify a 10% discount off their groceries each day.

This is a big, bold move. It could be life-changing for those in our community who thought they could not afford to join the co-op or buy healthy, sustainable foods. Please join us in spreading the word about this exciting new way to join and shop at Mississippi Market.

In order to have the biggest positive impact on our communities, we want to offer discounts to those who are most in need. While we have long offered a senior discount to those over age 62, our member surveys tell us that this population is less likely to be on a limited income. By changing our senior discount structure to one that is offered on Thursdays only, we will be able to add the new LIME program for those members who are on a very limited income, including seniors who qualify.

Thus, we are welcoming Senior Savings Thursday! Each Thursday senior members will receive 5% off their purchases. The only exclusions are for milk, butter, eggs, sushi, special orders and bulk water (we do not mark these

The Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign: Working together to eliminate hunger in Minnesota

T

he 2013 Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign raised more than $8.3 million and almost 4 million pounds of food. That is the equivalent of a year’s worth of meals for more than 7,700 families of four. While food shelf patrons are sometimes unemployed, the majority of those seeking assistance are employed or are children.

Each year Mississippi Market participates in the MN FoodShare March Campaign, a program of the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches that provides funds, food and educational materials to over 300 food shelves across the state. Last year our members, shoppers and staff gave a total of $25,585.33 for 2 local food shelves.

When we’re working together, all it

takes is “rounding up” your grocery bill or adding a few dollars onto your total to make a real difference. Of course, we’re also happy to accept non-perishable foods as well. Your monetary donations allow food shelves to buy food at a greatly reduced cost from food banks.

Mississippi Market’s donations to food shelves can also be used to order organic, local and specialty foods from us at wholesale costs. By sourcing these foods from local distributors and farmers, giving your donations a multiplying effect both on hunger in Minnesota and on the local food economy.

Food co-ops across the state will be running similar campaigns for their communities. Last year, Minnesota food co-ops ranked #1 in the state for

“Employee/Customer Campaigns”, with a total of 100,748 dollars/pounds of food donated by co-op shoppers statewide.

Immigrant and Minority Farmers Conference: Supporting skills for organic farming

M

ississippi Market is a regular sponsor of the Immigrant and Minority Farmers Conference, which takes place each February in St. Paul.

The conference is a part of The Big River Farms Program of the Minnesota Food Association (MFA), and provides farmers with the skills and knowledge to operate their own viable organic and sustainable vegetable farms. These farms provide fresh, organic produce to local consumers and promote a more sustainable food system.

Workshops at the conference cover topics ranging from soil health and efficient water management to growing asparagus and what a food hub is. The conference also offers an opportunity to network with other farmers and supportive organizations. “The Immigrant and Minority Farmers Conference is a

valuable experience for us, too, because it allows us to meet and talk with a wide array of farmers from different backgrounds,” explains Matt Olson, produce and meat manager at the Selby store. “We make connections to a more diverse segment of the population and are also able to answer many of the questions farmers have as to how they can continue to get their produce into the retail environment. I think it is an excellent opportunity to connect with our community in a direct and beneficial way.”

Mississippi Market believes that fostering growth in the local food economy is one of the most important things our co-op does. By sponsoring the Immigrant and Minority Farmers Conference we help provide local farmers with the support they need to become successful organic and sustainable farms.

When the winter chill is starting to get to you and all of your friends are hopping the next flight to Mexico, get in the kitchen and turn up the heat!

Here, we share some of the ways we spice it up, both at home and at the co-op.

HABANERO–VERY HOT

Prometheus Springs drinks This line of all-natural drinks contains a dash of capsaicin (what gives peppers their spice) to make you sit up and take notice.

Lightly sweetened natural juices balance out the kick. Look for these sweet and spicy flavors—mango chili, grapefruit cayenne, pomegranate pepper, and lychee wasabi.

Ingredients 3 large ripe tomatoes, cut into wedges 1/4 cup lemon juice 2 jalapeños, stemmed and seeded 2-3 teaspoons prepared horseradish 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon celery salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 6 ounces (3/4 cup) vodka (optional)

Method Puree tomatoes in a blender with lemon juice, jalapeños, horseradish to taste, Worcestershire, sugar, celery salt and pepper, scraping down the sides as necessary. Stir in vodka. Refrigerate until chilled, about 2 hours. Divide among 4 ice-filled glasses. Spear olives and dilly beans on toothpicks to garnish the drinks.
