A grocery cart is one of the most powerful vehicles for social change.

Gail Graham, General Manager Unfair economic structures and corporate domination of our food supply remain the norm—even in the natural products industry. Our co-op creates an alternative. We like to say that we are not just about great food—we are about “just” great food. Our decisions are guided by a sense of fairness and equity; by a desire to provide our member-owners with fresh,

locally produced foods grown in a manner that respects the earth and avoids the use and risk associated with toxic chemicals and GMOs; a desire to provide our staff with good jobs and pay our producers fairly.

People are increasingly recognizing that food choices are statements of political and moral expression, that food—including its production, distribution, marketing and consumption—is a core social issue, and that a grocery cart is one of the most powerful vehicles for social change.

We believe our work has enriched our community and we want to be in a position to keep our assets working hard

for all of us. In the coming year we will be engaging member owners in conversations about growth. We don’t know yet what form this growth will take beyond the obvious—growing in our current locations—but we want to start talking about it.

We believe growth is good, it means we can amplify our good work.

Growth means: • We can reach more people, giving them access to our cooperative model and to great food.

• We are helping ensure a vibrant, robust and sustainable local food economy. Last year we worked with 202 local vendors and nearly 44% of what we bought was purchased from Minnesota-owned companies or local growers. As we grow, we can buy more from local producers.

• We can employ more people. Co-op jobs are good jobs with good benefits.

•W e can give back more to our community. Last year we gave over $51,000 to area nonprofits: raised over $23,000 for MN food shelves and spent over $20,000 on sponsorships of events. We help make St. Paul a better place to live.

Co-ops around the country are impacting their communities in equally positive ways. Nationally, we work with 128 food co-ops operating 165 stores in 35 states with combined annual sales over $1.4 billion and with over 1.3 million consumerowners. We work together to leverage our resources and our voice and ultimately offer more value to our member-owners and to improve our communities. When a co-op is successful, thousands of people share in that success!

As the International Year of the Cooperative comes to a close I want to remind you that our strength is in acting together to create solutions in our community. And I want to thank all of you, for helping us achieve such phenomenal results in fiscal year 2012. Finally, I want to invite you to stay active and informed and help us create the future together.

In the tradition of their founders, coopera­ tive members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others. The co-operative principles are guidelines by which co-operatives put their values into practice. Concern for the Community is the 7th Cooperative Principle. Mississippi Market celebrates this principle by working for the sustainable development of our community in a number of ways.

Education: We educate the community through classroom offerings, outreach to schools and community events, postings on social media sites, and providing educational materials located in the stores and on our website, www.msmarket.coop. We partner with area food co-ops to sponsor the Midwest Food Connection, a nonprofit organization that helps school children make healthy and responsible food choices.

Environment: We beautify our city through support to the Healthy West 7th community garden located near the West 7th store. We also worked hard to preserve the oak tree at the Selby Avenue store when we expanded our parking lot. Additionally, we encourage shoppers to bring their own bag for which they receive a credit of five cents —shoppers can choose to donate that credit to nonprofit organizations and food shelves. This both eliminates waste and supports the community.

Community Support: Mississippi Market sponsors community events that relate to our mission and coordinates the donation of funds to select organizations that serve the community. This year at our annual meeting, members voted for three groups to receive grants from Mississippi Market: Hallie Q. Brown food shelf, the Land Stewardship Project and the Midwest Food Connection. We also donate thousands of pounds of food to local food shelves each year.

Jobs: Mississippi Market also ­demonstrates concern for the community by providing fair, livable wages and benefits to employees…putting profits back in to the community and supporting good jobs for those who live here.

here’s something about the jars all lined up neatly in our bulk herbs and spices section, the colors of their contents shining through the glass from behind their label, that draws me in. But there’s more than visual appeal here—it’s the promise of the scents that the jars contain that make me put down my grocery basket and stay awhile.

These jars offer a quick escape during a busy day. Open the curry spice jar and I’m sitting at a roadside restaurant in Rajastan, India watching the sun set over the desert. Open the cardamom and I’m in my old Uptown apartment making

St. Lucia buns with my roommate. Open the lavender jar and I’m strolling on the Olympic peninsula with my family.

Because the power of smell creates strong connections between friendship, food and our memories it’s fun to play around with different scents and make sachets of herbs and spices for gifts.

Melissa, our bulk herb buyer at the Selby store, offers this invitation to making winter sachets (some possibilities are listed at left): fill muslin spice bags with herb and spice blends to stir some lovely memories and keep rooms, closets and drawers fresh.

Where we stand on GM foods

Right to Know Minnesota Minnesota’s campaign for GMO ­labeling, Right to Know Minnesota, is encouraging those in favor of labeling to contact their state ­legislators now, in preparation for the January legislative session. www.righttoknowmn.org

ississippi Market has long been in opposition to genetically modified (GM) foods. We’ve campaigned against GM salmon, GM alfalfa, and cloned animals and petitioned the FDA for mandatory federal labeling of GM foods. Along with co-ops across the country, we have supported the Just Label It campaign, the Non-GMO project and raised awareness about state initiatives for GMO labeling.

GMOs are a concern for many of us. They are a threat to the integrity of organic agriculture and have the potential for allergen concerns. They enable corporations to patent seeds & prevent seed-saving practices. GMOs spread pesticide-resistant genes that lead to increased use of pesticides. Without mandatory labeling, consumers cannot

dependably choose whether or not they eat these altered foods.

Mississippi Market’s policy is to prefer carrying foods that are organic or non-GMO verified, but without mandatory labeling no grocery store can know for certain whether conventional foods contain GM ingredients or not. Until labeling laws are in place, shoppers can avoid many GM foods by buying certified organic or non-GMO verified foods and avoiding non-organic soy, corn, canola and sugar beets. We are evaluating our product policy to see how we can further support shoppers avoiding GM foods. With continued efforts from co-ops, labeling advocates and you, we could see mandatory labeling in our future!

LaBore makes local lettuce available year-round LaBore Farms is a hydroponic greens farm located in Faribault, MN. Hydroponic growing uses mineral nutrient solutions without soil. For owner Michelle Keller, hydroponics isn’t just the best way to produce crops, it’s the method by which we’ll grow food in the future. While hydroponic produce can’t legally be classified as organic, it’s the next best thing. No pesticides or fungicides are applied, and instead Integrated Pest Management (IPM) keeps the bugs at bay.

Featherstone Farm carrots Featherstone Farm in Rushford, MN produces over 40 different crops for fresh delivery to food co-ops and other Midwest food outlets, and has operated a successful community supported agriculture program for more than 10 years. The farm’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that the freshest, besttasting and most-nutritious fruits and vegetables come from sustainable systems and a source people can get to know and trust.

Gateway Food Initiative Update As reported previously, Mississippi Market has been working with the Gateway Food Initiative to bring a co-op to the East side of St. Paul. The City of St. Paul is currently reviewing options to develop the site on East 7th Street, across from Swede Hollow Café.

Mississippi Market is in discussion with the City to explore this opportunity further. Crucial information about this potential opportunity, such as the city’s timeline, available land and projected costs, is still unknown. As we receive information and the Board reviews our options, we will communicate updates via our website and newsletter.

Thank you to everyone who voted for our board of directors in the October election. We are happy to welcome Julia Burgess and Aleksey Kulichenko to the co-op’s board. Incumbents Jon Olson and Nabeel Ahmed were reelected as well.

All four directors were elected to serve three year terms.

Mississippi Market awards $14,000 in grants During the 2012 board of directors election, Mississippi Market memberowners were asked to choose three organizations out of five to share $14,000 in grant money. Grants were awarded in proportion to the number of votes each organization received. The following organizations received awards: Land Stewardship Project—$5,292 Hallie Q. Living the Land Ethic workshop Mississippi Market is partnering with REI and the Aldo Leopold Foundation to present Living the Land Ethic. Read, discuss and experience the ideas of Aldo Leopold as described in his timeless book, A Sand County Almanac, and reflect on their application to our day-to-day lives.

Holiday Gift Drive for Families Fighting Homelessness Mississippi Market is once again partnering with the Horseshoe Club at Fabulous Fern’s to collect holiday gifts for families enrolled in Housing and Supportive Services at YWCA St. Paul. Wish lists and collection boxes will be available through December 14 at both Mississippi Market locations.

To participate: choose a tag from the poster, take it with you to shop for an item listed, then attach the tag to the unwrapped gift when you drop it in the collection box. Donors are also welcome to bring a gift to a kick-off event being held at Fabulous Fern’s on December 6 and to attend the gift wrapping party on Saturday, December 15 from noon to 2 p.m. at the YWCA St. Paul.
