West 7th Store Plant Sale

May 5 – May 31st

By Teresa Connor & Sue Michel Plant Sale Coordinators This year’s theme for the plant sale is The Urban Gardener. By creating gardens in the city, we provide beauty and food for ourselves and create an oasis for bees, birds, and other helpful critters. This year, we have chosen to purchase all our plants from local growers who are committed to earth friendly and sustainable cultivation practices: Glacial Ridge Growers and Green Earth Growers.

You’ll find cool hardy plants such as Minnesota natives, potting annuals, and cool crop vegetables at the start of the sale. For Mother’s Day Weekend, there will be an ample selection of amazing hanging baskets.

During the second week of the sale, the bulk of perennials, tomatoes and peppers will arrive along with other tender

veggies, herbs, & annuals! Both growers are contributing to our awesome selection of heirloom tomatoes and peppers (over 65 varieties!) and Green Earth Growers has once again agreed to grow specially requested heirloom tomatoes and peppers for us. Our Tomato and Pepper Resource Guide will be available for helping you decide which varieties to select.

Vegetable growers can also anticipate several new items. Check out our six pack Urban Gardener samplers of peppers, tomatoes, root vegetables, cole crops, squash, and onions. Starts for cucumbers and melons will also return this year.

Organic soil amendments, worm castings and potting soils are available at both stores. Don’t forget to look indoors for a great selection of gardening essentials such as High Mowing & Seed Savers Exchange seeds, gardening books, pots of all sizes, tools, gloves, and composting buckets.

Balancing rising prices with values Gail Graham, General Manager In February, after a 2 year lull with very low inflation in the food sector, the US Department of Agriculture projected that this year food prices will rise 3.5% and possibly as much as 5%. It looks like once again we are entering a period with volatile food prices.

reflects price changes almost immediately. When California has bad weather, crops are lost, yields are reduced and prices go up. For most packaged products the price increase cycle is longer and less transparent. Manufacturers have contracts for supplies of key ingredients guaranteeing a fixed price for a number of months. Therefore price changes on grocery items often lag behind the news of commodity increases—which, by the way, are skyrocketing to levels not seen since 2008. We have been hearing from our beef producers that they are experiencing a huge increase in demand for natural and grass fed beef at the same time that the cow herd in the US is at its lowest level since 1950. They also are faced with increasing costs for grains that supplement some herds’ diets. Higher

costs, less supply and more demand inevitably equal higher prices.

Co-op shoppers are already used to paying a premium price. We all know you get what you pay for, and at the co-op, you are paying for and getting, more than just really good food. Joan Stockinger, who works with Cooperative Development Services on issues relating to local foods and the viability of local producers, sums it up this way: “A reasonable estimate is that an on-farm organic dairy processor, using a grassbased farming system that achieves the highest environmental standards, and pays fair trade wages in the local economy, will have costs per half gallon of bottled milk that are as much as twice that of the industrial dairy system. Where do these costs go? This farmer is voluntarily incorporating a range of costs that are “externalized” in much of the industrial system. The creek water leaving this farm is cleaner than when it enters; soil is being built; habitat for wild life is abundant; the milk is healthier for humans; jobs are created for the local community; animal husbandry is outstanding.”

Because of these excellent production methods we also get a cleaner product with higher CLA and omega 3 fat composition—which promotes heart health.

And let’s not forget how wonderful the creamy cheese, sweet butter and sizzling steaks taste!

We know that all of these factors— price, sustainability, health and taste —matter to our shoppers. Periodically we like to ask you for concrete feedback to help us understand how we are doing on balancing these values while providing the service you expect. This month we are mailing out survey links to randomly selected members. Our surveys give us important information about how well we are meeting your needs and guide us in understanding where we can improve.

As I write this, I am looking at a snowy landscape. It is hard to believe that this newsletter will cover the annual Plant Sale. It seems far in the future. In many ways, this is what it is like for your Board of Directors these days.

At our last meeting, we looked at our financial results. We are doing well. What is even more impressive is how the West Seventh store is doing. That decision was a big one. The Board hired consultants to project whether the location could support our members’ and customers’ needs. We thought it could and signed the purchase agreement.

The economy went downhill and we were nervous. Today, almost two years from the opening, we are beating our projections by more than ten percent and we see strong growth in new members.

Most of this success is due to the extraordinary leadership team at Mississippi Market. Give them a pat on the back when you see them. It is a job well done.

So now what? What do we want from the garden that is our cooperative?

Upgrade the Selby store, a third store, food delivery, all of the above and more?

Last year, your Board started a new round of strategic planning. In the shortterm, we need to grow into our new

space and make sure we continue to operate efficiently. But what about three years from now? To help guide our work, your Board developed five strategic priorities. They are: • To achieve operational excellence.

In the nonprofit world, the saying goes, “no margin, no mission.” That is true for our cooperative too. Our first goal is to provide you the healthful food and products you want at a fair price.

We can’t do that unless we are running the business well.

• An engaged workforce. While we sell products, getting the right products on the shelves at the right time and being able tell you about them are uniquely human activities. We want a culture that supports every employee knowing they are an essential piece of the puzzle.

• Exceptional customer service. We can have great products and services but if our members and customers don’t feel that they matter, they won’t use the cooperative.

• Being a trusted advisor. It is painful to see so many stories about unsafe food and the plight of the small producers.

As a longstanding natural foods coopera- tive, we have unique knowledge about the food industry. We want to be the one you and the community turn to with questions.

• Grow the local natural foods economy.

We know the number one reason you come to us is because you want to support locally produced food. Each time you buy a loaf of bread from a local baker or butter from a local producer, you create more demand. We want to be an important venue in making those connections.

While it is not quite time to start planting new seeds, we think these priorities will be good guideposts for the future. As always, tell us what you think.

From Burritos to Brownies…Our Deli Makes It Fresh!

There’s no better time to try our burritos than Cinco de Mayo!

We’re celebrating by offering $1 off our deli burritos. The deli’s hot bar will also feature Mexican entrees and sides. Look for samples throughout the store as we celebrate this Mexican tradition!

Meal Time Step up to our deli counters and you’ll witness a flurry of activity. Our friendly staff is juicing vegetables, cutting wheels of cheese, making coffee drinks, serving salads, and creating the deli items that we offer our customers every day. Now, there’s something new going on back there—our deli now makes burritos, made to order. Choose from fajita chicken, beef barbacoa and fajita seitan. Build on from there with as many as ten fresh toppings—from lettuce and beans to salsa, from black beans to guacamole, you can tailor your burrito to be how you like it! Vegan and gluten-free options are available. And each burrito comes with a side of tortilla chips. The burrito bar is open from 11 a.m.- 8 p.m.

The arrival of May signals that the end of the school year is near. For many, there will be cause for extra celebration — graduation! Look to our deli as you plan your graduation parties! Our catering menu features specialty platters, such as sandwich trays and fresh fruit platters, fresh salads, wholesome entrees and delicious desserts all made with the finest, natural ingredients.

If there’s something that you’d like at your party that you frequently see in our deli case, but you don’t see on the menu, just ask! Our deli will be happy to make it for you. If you are interested in placing an order, talk to someone on the deli staff. Please get your catering orders into the deli at least 48 hours prior to your event. Many people are familiar with the benefits of homeopathic remedies such as Arnica and Oscillo® for healing and keeping the body well. But fewer of us know of the transformative properties of flower essences, preparations potentized in a manner analogous to homeopathic remedies. Like homeopathics, flower essences are without side effects or any known drug interactions. However, while homeopathics are commonly used for physical ailments, flower essences address the emotional and mental aspects of wellness.

Flower essences were first developed in the 1930’s by English physician and homeopath Dr. Edward Bach, for which reason they are sometimes called Bach Flower Remedies.

Flower essences are herbal infusions of the flowering part of the plant, diluted and potentized in a way which allows natural properties of flowers to be preserved and concentrated so that they act directly as healing agents. Flower essences do not bear the scent of the flower from which they are crafted, though they do carry a hint of flavor.

They are most often taken orally, though they may also be used on the skin.

The best known flower essence combination is Rescue Remedy, a formula of five flowers that works to alleviate stress, panic and emotional trauma. This combination is also available as Five Flower Formula, a preparation made from certified organic and biodynamically-

grown flowers. These formulas can be safely given to children and even pets.

Flower Essence Services’ Illumine formula is indicated for those struggling with discouragement, depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder —useful for many here in Minnesota!

Other popular remedies include: • Cayenne for breaking through stagnant habits and ways of thinking.

• Indian Pink to remain centered and focused, even under stress or high levels of activity.

• Morning Glory to feel awake and refreshed, especially in the morning.

• Chamomile for moodiness and irritability.

• Self Heal to tap into health-giving forces for body and soul.

Sustaining you! Recycling how-to, composting tips and sustainability classes Where can I recycle plastic containers?

We recycle our glass, aluminum, paper, Tetra-paks and plastic bottles with Eureka Recycling, the same provider as for residents of St. Paul. Right now their processing equipment requires plastics to have bottle-necks and be made from #1 or #2 plastics. Accepting tubs or other shapes of plastic would involve totally new, extremely expensive machinery.

There are a few alternative ways to recycle these other plastics now. Eastside Co-op in northeast Minneapolis hosts a recycling drop-off station as part of a project with the City of Mpls and Republic Services. Please see www.eastsidefood. coop for drop off times and sorting rules. Whole Foods participates in a program called Gimme 5, a project of Preserve products, Organic Valley and Stoneyfield. Plastic tubs with the #5 label may be dropped off at Whole Foods, where they will be shipped to the recycling facilities in New York.

While we are on the waiting list for this program, we hope to find a more local recycler to fill this need.

This plastic issue is one that we continually struggle with. We work closely with Eureka Recycling to promote their existing services and encourage new developments.

Rest assured that we are continually searching for more options for plastic recycling! For now, we encourage you to consider buying larger tubs of yogurts, ask for the compostable containers from our deli and reuse containers when buying from our bulk aisle.

6 Tips for Successful Composting Want to compost but feeling a little intimidated? It’s easy!

By Nilgun Tuna, Mississippi Market board president and Ramsey County Master Gardener 1. Everything rots eventually! You can make it be as much or as little work as you want. The faster you want the compost, the more work it will take to turn it frequently. Or you can leave the pile to do its work and have equally good compost in one season. I apply my compost in the fall.

2. The secret to compost that doesn’t smell, attract flies, or upset neighbors is to mix browns (carbon rich materials like leaves, straw, shredded paper products) with your greens (kitchen scraps, weeds without seeds, grass clippings). Stockpile browns in a dry container or location when you have them to mix with the greens as you deposit them. You don’t need fancy inoculants.

Toss in a shovelful or two of dirt –it has all the microorganisms you need to do the job. Water the pile if conditions are really dry.

What kind of plastic bags are okay to drop off for recycling at the co-op?

3. Don’t add meat or dairy, or carnivore feces. Aquarium water and hamster bedding are good. Used cat litter-bad. These will attract critters and have disease potential.

Mississippi Market uses the “It’s in the Bag” program by MN WasteWise to recycle plastic bags and stretch wrap. You can drop off any plastic bags or stretch/shrink wrap as long as they are clean, dry and don’t have any rigid handles or strings. Six-pack holder rings are okay, but bubble wrap and frozen food bags are not allowed. Just drop these items off in our foyer when you shop!

4. Plan ahead so composting is easy and becomes a habit. Stop using your sink disposal unit. Get a metal or ceramic container with a lid (plastic retains odor). You don’t need a filter because it won’t be around that long—hopefully. Put the compost pile in a convenient location, but away from your house.

Two piles are optimal—one for deposits, and one which is actively composting.

Are your deli containers compostable?

5. Containers don’t have to be fancy. A pile will work. So will trenches dug directly in the garden, or an enclosure of chicken wire. Make sure the pile gets air. If making or buying a container think about how you will shovel out the finished compost.

Some containers are really inconvenient back busters.

If you have a good, hot compost bin at home, you can compost our deli cups (both the hot drink and cold drink cups), plastic flatware, paper-board containers (used for hot bar items, pizza and burritos), waxed bags for baked goods and napkins.

Please don’t incorporate these paper and compostable bio-plastic products in the food waste bins in our deli seating areas. These bins are for food only. Our food waste is recycled into animal feed and we don’t want those pigs eating forks or paper!

6. Your compost is done when it is brown and crumbly and has a sweet earthy smell. What to do with the stuff? Put it on your organic veg. beds after harvest with your other nutrients. Use it as a nutritious mulch or side dressing throughout your garden.

Feel good. You’ve fed your garden, not the waste stream!

We’ve just received our Certificate of Adoption, which makes it official— Mississippi Market is now the proud adoptive guardians of a real, live Sugar Maple tree! Tree #25 was born within the sugarbush of Anderson’s Maple Syrup, deep in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.

With the adoption complete, Mississippi Market has become an honorary sugar maker with the privilegesof year-round tree visitation and having the ability to visit our tree online whenever we’d like. We’ve also been graciously welcomed into the proud heritage of Wisconsin family sugar making—an ecologically and economically sustainable tradition committed to forest conservation and environmental stewardship.

Adopting our tree has obviously strengthened our connection to the Anderson’s Maple Syrup that we sell. In our stores you’ll find Anderson’s Grade A in bottles and Anderson’s Grade A and Grade B syrups in bulk. Grade A is harvested earlier in the year and is lighter in color, most often used on pancakes and waffles. Grade B is harvested later in the year, giving it a darker color and stronger flavor, making it better for baking and those who love maple flavor.
