A charitable organization, spearheaded by Febbie Grace Aresco, a Grade 11 HUMSS student from Maryknoll School of Lupon, Inc., together with her members, organized an outreach program for the less fortunate children in San Roque, San Isidro, Davao Oriental, last December 30, 2024.

The Fr. Ferry Medical Assistance Team at Maryknoll School of Lupon, Inc. (MSLu) took part in a comprehensive medical training program held at the school gymnasium last August 10, 2024 to equip them with useful emergency response skills in preparation for upcoming school events.
The training followed a recent club recruitment drive led by the former Fr. Ferry Healthcare Assistant Team, which brought in new members from Grades 7-12.
School nurse Noe Nermal, RN, held an initial meeting with the club to confirm official members, discuss the training fee, required items, schedule, and other preparations.
During the morning sessions, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) representative guided students through basic bandaging techniques and first aid.
In the afternoon, students practiced a range of disaster response and rescue operations through hands-on simulations, allowing them to apply their first aid skills in realistic scenarios.
This included immobilizing fractures with a long, rectangular splint secured to the arm using triangular bandages to provide stability for fracture management.
The group was named ‘Genesis’ after being founded in 2017 by Jocyn Hara Aresco together with their sister, Sciendyl Aresco, alumnas of MSLu, has grown from its humble beginnings of just six members.
Over the past seven years, the Genesis group has extended its outreach to over a thousand children across various communities in Lupon and San Isidro, Davao Oriental.
With the support of their parents and other benefactors, the group funds their program through Christmas caroling and soliciting donations to sustain their annual outreach programs.
In the past years, Genesis focused its efforts on reaching underserved areas in Lupon, Davao
Oriental, including Tagugpo, where they distributed food, clothes, and holiday cheer to children.
This year, the group expanded its reach to the remote upper areas of San Roque, climbing challenging terrain to carry out their initiative.
“Challenging kaayo kay nagsaka pami’g bukid unya bugat among mga dala para lang mahatagan ang mga bata ug foods and clothes pero worth it jud gihapon kaayo,” Febbie Grace Aresco shared in an interview.
Now having over 30 members, Genesis continues to grow with hopes of further expanding their impact on communities in need.

Students at MSLu are calling on the school administration to urgently address the worsening condition of the campus open court, which has remained unused since 2016 due to plans for renovation that have yet to materialize.
Int’l job offers push teachers to resign by: ELIZZAGRABILLO
The growing desire of teachers at MSLu to pursue opportunities abroad suggests that the school could soon struggle to hire replacements quickly enough to fill vacancies, which makes it likely that the teachers may be forced to teach subjects that are outside of their specialty.
According to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), with around 1,500 teachers leaving the country every year to work abroad local schools are increasingly forced to hire out of necessity, often placing teachers in roles outside their specialization.
Ms. Aisha added that, “The prospect of greater career progression and networking opportunities encouraged me to make this critical life decision.”
WORKING ENVIRONMENT. The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) has emphasized that teachers’ migration may worsen this year, as numerous teachers have recounted factors such as low salaries, excessive workload, as well as better working situations in other countries.
“Working overseas emphasizes a stronger support system, utilization of advanced educational resources, along with the chance to collaborate with an international community of professionals,” she emphasized.
Educational recruitment agencies are also reported to have a rising demand for Filipino teachers abroad, especially in countries like Japan, the United States, and parts of the Middle East, where Filipino educators are recognized for their adaptability and English language proficiency
Known to many as JM, Ilagan faced a tragic accident on October 2 while riding his bicycle in the neighboring municipality of Banaybanay.
He reportedly swerved to avoid hitting a dog, which caused him to lose balance and fall onto the road.
The impact of the fall left JM in a coma for three days and on October 5, he passed away at the Davao Oriental Regional Hospital.
Friends and family remember JM, the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Victorino Ilagan, as a warm and likable person, his friendly and kind personality left a lasting impression on those around him.
Mikah Salonga, a close friend, expressed deep sadness over JM’s death, sharing her grief and sense of loss.
“Unta makabalo siya nga sakit kaayo nganong wala siya nag amping, unta nag amping siya kadtong nag bike siya, unta nakabalo siya nga gimingaw na

John Michael Ilagan, a student from Grade 9-St. Martin de Porres, shocked Maryknoll School of Lupon with his sudden passing.
kaayo mi niya, nga gimingaw na kaayo ang iyang family sa iya,” Salonga said, voicing her longing for her friend.
[“I hope he knows how much it hurts that he didn’t take care of himself. I hope he took better care of himself when he was biking. I hope he knows how much we miss him, how much his family misses him.”]
In an interview, Salonga described JM as friendly and talkative, saying he brought comfort to her as a recent transferee, though they had only known each other for a few months, Salonga viewed JM not as a friend but as a sibling. She received the news of JM’s passing while preparing for the DMACSAM 2024 event, which added to her grief.
JM’s older brother, Vic Ilagan, shared a heartfelt message, saying simply, “I miss you, JM,” when asked what he would say to him now.
Despite their three-year age gap, Vic described JM as “the best”
and expressed a profound sense of loss.
He admitted that JM’s passing had affected his interest in school, leaving him to mourn the dreams and moments they shared.
Vic hopes to cope with the pain by creating more cherished memories with his family, he believes that spending more time with loved ones will help him heal and honor JM’s memory.
Ms. Analou R. Cruda, JM’s adviser, described him as a quiet yet respectful student, she recalled how JM rarely raised his hand in class but always participated when called upon.
Ms. Cruda said that his classmates regularly visited his wake each night and attended his funeral on October 14.
The school also included JM in prayer intentions during the rosary and paraliturgy, praying for the eternal repose of his soul.
Alumni and students alike recall the court as a gathering place, especially for basketball games, with alumni describing it as a central space for both sports and recreational activities.

Due to inflation, many students struggle to balance their allowance between buying food for recess or lunch and setting aside money for school projects.
The unexpected price hike has raised concern among students who feel their limited allowance may not be sufficient to meet both their nutritional and academic needs.
Some students have voiced worries that the increased prices could lead to skipping meals or relying on less nutritious options to save money. While not all items in the MSLU canteen have increased in price,
most students are unable to afford the food they desire.
“I can’t afford the food I’m currently craving,” said Brylle Basuel, a Grade 11 student.
Since the price hike, many students have started bringing their own food and snacks to save money.
“I’ve started bringing my own food so I can save for projects if needed,” said Dane Paul C. Clarido.
While the increased prices help the school raise funds for events like Foundation Day and alumni gatherings, they place a financial burden on students.

[
“I can remember before, I really had fun playing here because it is just inside the campus. We don’t need to go out anymore. I hope this will get fixed so that students here would experience playing basketball at this court.”]
Since its closure, and particularly after years of inactivity during the pandemic, the court has fallen into disrepair, with visible cracks on the floor where weeds have grown and metal rings that are now rusted.
Students, especially those involved in sports, have consistently expressed the need for a functioning court to support various physical activities, particularly basketball.
“Unta ma ayo na ang open court para dili na namo kinahanglan mogawas para mag training or mag practice. Para pod unta kung nay dula, diria nalang pod, dili na sa gawas na mga court para dili na pod kalas ug pamasahe,” John Paul Dignos, a basketball player of MSLu, stated in an interview.
[“I hope the open court will be fixed so that we won’t need to go out do our training[s] or to practice. Also, if there would be tournaments, it will be held here and not on courts outside to not waste [tricycle] fares”]
As of November, 2024, the school has not provided any official statement regarding the future of the open court, leaving students uncertain about the facility’s fate.

To put an end to the issues regarding the recent fire breakout, the Bureau of Fire Protection of Lupon negated the allegations thrown at them.
Last October 24, the Lamanilao building in the market avenue, including its nearby establishments, were caught in fire around 7:00 in the evening. Though no casualties or fatalities were recorded, the damage summed up to around Php 20,000,000.
“Dili na maabot ang Banaybanay kung dili mi [BFPLupon] mangayo ug tabang, kadto siya na sunog maong nangayo mi ug tabang kay dili na siya kaya sa atong fire truck diri sa Lupon, bisag lima ni kabuok atong fire truck, ika lima ang MDRRMO, lisod na jud kaayo na apulahon ang sunog,” FO3 Jan Joseph Barba, the designated investigator for the incident said during an exclusive interview.
[“Banaybanay wouldn’t have been reached if we, the [BFP-Lupon], hadn’t asked for help. The fire there was too much for our fire truck here in Lupon, even though we have five of them. The MDRRMO’s truck was the fifth, and it was really difficult to put out the fire.”]
Barba then claimed that they were informed about the incident 20 minutes after it broke out and arrived at the rescue scene three minutes after the heads up.
Merely a minute upon arrival, BFP-Lupon declared second alarm status, then came two fire trucks each from the neighboring municipalities of Banaybanay and
“Ang atoang fire truck is dili unlimited ang tubig, kung tinud-on gyud namog away ang fire truck, ma’am, it’s less than five minutes hurot na gyud na ang tubig sa atoang fire truck,” Barba said, refuting the allegations that the reason behind BFP-Lupon’s alleged late arrival was “nagkabo pa ug tubig.” (We had to fetch more water).
Barba then said that the fire trucks’ tanks contain half of the full amount of water while on standby.
[“Our fire truck doesn’t have unlimited water. If we really push the fire truck hard, ma’am, the water will run out in less than five minutes.”]
He also emphasized the important role the fire hydrants play during firefighting, saying that it would save time. He added that the pressure released by fire hydrants is not sufficient to reach their tanks; he then said that Lupon Water District should take action in order to aid the BFP whenever there is firefighting.
“During sa fire, ang atoang tanke puno [ug] ang atong pressure equal pero ang atoa man gung tubig dili nimo maingnan ang mga tao sa household nga ‘Uy naay sunog ron ayaw mog gamit ug tubig’ kay syempre interconnected man siya,” said Mr. Benigno A. TOn October 7, delegates from 11 diocesan schools arrived at the venue, ready to compete in different athletic events and with each school extensive preparations, the athletes showed their skills and determination as they aimed for medals.
The holy mass during the opening ceremony emphasized a message from Reverend Father Uldarico “Lolong” Toroba Jr., who encouraged athletes to accept both victory and defeat by stating, “Winning is not everything; there is dignity even in defeat, and in fact, it
is in our failures and defeat that we learn the value of humility.”
As the competitions began, athletes exhibited their abilities and sportsmanship, knowing that the essence of the games extended beyond just winning, each participant representing their school with pride and respect. The unity among the 11 schools was seen, promoting teamwork and building friendships among the athletes, allowing students from opposing schools to connect during the events.
Furthermore, the event provided opportunities for social interaction among studentathletes, who shared experiences and strategies throughout the competition.
As the events progressed, spectators showed strong support for their teams, creating an energetic atmosphere, proving that community involvement impacts the role of athletic events in building school spirit.
households, “Hey, there’s a fire, don’t use water,” because, of course, the water supply is interconnected.”]
He then added that as LWD is a self-supporting government agency that relies on loans, the BFP needed to pay the water consumed whenever firefighting, saying that since it was founded, the BFP-Lupon has not paid any amount to LWD.
As of October 30, the cause of the fire is still undetermined, but it is identified that the fire started at the apartment rented by Ms. Jessa Catagnan.
“During sa fire, ang atoang tanke puno [ug] ang atong pressure equal pero ang atoa man gung tubig dili nimo maingnan ang mga tao sa household nga ‘Uy naay sunog ron ayaw mog gamit ug tubig’ kay syempre interconnected man siya,”

Sebastian Dagmang was reportedly with Jdan Tripole at the time of the incident, helping to facilitate the practice of the elementary players as they prepared for the upcoming Unit Meet, which is scheduled to take place on November 4-5.
After checking on Luke, Jdan promptly informed the sports coordinator, Mr. Keith Carpesano, about the situation, who in turn quickly notified the Prefect of Discipline, Mr. Ladislao Dela Cruz, and called for an ambulance. The rescue team arrived quickly and checked on Luke, and

With a recent surge in clinic visits at Maryknoll School of Lupon Inc., school nurse Noe C. Nermal, RN, has raised concerns about the frequency of students seeking medical attention.
The increase has been notable, with daily visits now doubling the expected average, putting a strain on the clinic’s resources.
According to Nermal, “There has been a significant increase of students visiting the clinic nowadays, with almost 10 students daily, depending on their cases.”
He concluded that this rise could be due to numerous factors, including changes in weather, higher stress levels, or even the presence of a new illness.
This surge has led to a quick depletion of common medications, such as cold remedies and pain relievers, which are now harder to keep in stock.
In response, the school is advising the parents and guardians to help in preventive measures, like handwashing, staying home when sick, and having enough rest and nutrition.
shortly afterward, his parents arrived on the scene, with the rescuers advising them to take their son to the District Hospital for further examination and appropriate medical care.
Despite the suggestion, the parents chose not to bring Luke to the hospital immediately, explaining, as Sebastian recalled, “Ana sila basin nalisa lang daw.” [“They said it might just be a sprain.”]
On October 30, however, Luke’s parents decided to take him to the hospital for a checkup, where it was discovered that his wrist was fractured and required immediate immobilization and treatment.
Luke Wenceslao was scheduled for surgery on November 4, 2024, following a series of medical evaluations to determine the most suitable treatment for his injury.
As of November 6, Luke is still in the hospital, where he continues his recovery under the close supervision of medical professionals, with no discharge date confirmed as he undergoes treatment and rehabilitation for his wrist injury.

In able to compete in the upcoming Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC), the Schools Division of Davao Oriental will be sending two groups each in radio and television broadcasting, in both English and Filipino medium.
The announcement was made by the Educational Program Supervisor (EPS) in English, Sir Paulo Morales, last January 9.
In line with the announcement, Darren Gera, who bagged the second place as News Presenter in the Division Schools
Press Conference (DSPC), will be joining the roster of campus journalists from The Bridge to vie a spot in the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC).
Originally, only one team for the aforementioned categories for both English and Filipino medium will be sent to RSPC, but this year came with a twist.
It is still yet to be known when the RSPC will be, but some of the participating School Publications are already working on their requirements.

LUPON—To express her dismay, an unnamed parent voiced out her concern during the
Assembly.
Last September 21, most of the parents together with some students filled the Domini Canis Gymnasium, where important matters were discussed. The meeting then started at 1:00 in the afternoon.
During the meeting, the parents were informed that the previous organization had more than Php 100,000 remaining balance.
A parent then displayed her concern by suggesting that the school could use the remaining balance to fund the school’s upcoming activities and projects.
The suggestion aims to lessen the amount that is to be solicited from the parents for the projects and activities.
“[A] very good project that is beneficial to parents and the rest of the individuals involved,” the Assistant Principal of the
answered when asked about the possible outcome of the suggestion.
The school’s rules and regulations were also discussed during the meeting, where Senior Mary Daisy Donado also emphasized the important role the parents play for the improvement of the institution.
This adjustment has raised concerns, particularly at MSLu, as the compressed schedule leaves little room to manage monthly examinations and multiple extracurricular events per month within the limited class duration. Furthermore, teachers and students have been under extreme stress due to this change, as lesson plans intended for a fiveday discussion are now condensed into just one or two days to cover all topics before the monthly examinations.
“Kasabot man mi nga kinahanglan sa DepEd ibalik ang school calendar sa June, mao nga gipamub-an ang school year karon. Pero, kinahanglan pod nila huna-hunaon ang kaayuhan sa mga estudyante ug magtutudlo,” said a Grade 12 student from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

Processing about 20 metric tons of seafood daily, and contributing over Php 50 million to the local economy, while generating roughly 20% of the Municipality’s yearly tax revenue, Lupon’s fishport supports job growth and boosts the Municpality’s economic standing.
The fishport also improves local infrastructures and public services, providing stable employment for Maryknoll School of Lupon families.
As the fishport create stable jobs in logistics and fish processing it assists Maryknoll School of Lupon students and their families with their educational and family expenses.
Additionally, by providing students with a practical case study the fishport fosters involvement and a sense of civic duty while improving the students’ comprehension in business, economic, and environmental science.
current school year was shortened. However, they also need to consider the well-being of the students and teachers.”]
ACADEMIC QUALITY. One of the major concerns raised by both teachers and students is the quality of education being delivered and received, as the shortened schedule provides only limited time to thoroughly discuss all required lessons.
In a survey conducted by The Bridge, 83 out of 100 students shared the sentiment that this school year feels rushed, attributing it to the compressed eight-month duration of classes.
“Labi na karon nga mubo ang school year, lisod kaayo. Dinalian ra ang discussion sa teachers ug overload pa ilang trabaho, unya sa mga estudyante, labi na sa SHS, lisod kaayo makasabot sa lesson kay dinalian ug daghan pa kaayo,” Brylle Basuel, a Grade 11 student from Humanities and Social Sciences expressed in an interview.
[“Especially now that the school year is shortened, it’s really difficult. Teachers are rushing through the discussions, and their workload is overloaded. For students,
especially in SHS, it’s very hard to understand the lessons because everything is rushed, and there’s just too much.”]
LIMITED KNOWLEDGE RETENTION. Furthermore, students expressed their distress, noting that instead of focusing on truly understanding and learning the material, their primary concern has shifted to merely passing the exams and meeting deadlines.
“Lisod kaayo kay instead nga mag-focus mi sa pagtuon ug pagsabot sa mga leksyon, napugos na lang mi nga unahon ang paghuman sa requirements ug pagapas sa grades para makapasar,” Darren Gera shared during an interview.
[“It’s really hard because instead of focusing on learning and understanding the lessons, we are forced to prioritize finishing requirements and chasing grades just to pass.”]
Teachers have also raised concerns that students are not fully grasping the lessons, and during quizzes and examinations, they tend to rely on memorization rather than genuine learning and understanding.
INCREASED PRESSURE AND
STRESS. Another issue is the pressure and stress on the mental well-being of both students and teachers, resulting from the abrupt adjustment to the academic calendar, which was said to have created added challenges for everyone involved.
About 94% of the students reported feeling pressured this academic year. Additionally, 64% attributed their stress primarily to schoolwork and the numerous extracurricular activities they are required to participate in.
Moreover, most of the respondents indicated that stress has taken a toll on both their mental and physical health. The most common effects recorded in the survey were burnout and a lack of sleep.
In an interview, a Grade 10 student stated that, “Tungod sa patong-patong na study-hanan ug projects, usahay tig three or four hours nalang akong tulog. Labi na during exam week, halos tig two hours ra jud.”
[“Because of the piled-up studying and projects, sometimes I only get three or four hours of sleep. Especially during exam week, it’s almost just two hours of sleep.”]
The fishport also plays important role in enhancing the students’ real-world learning in business and economics nad fosters partnership that promotes continued economic and educational development in the community.
Relying on the supply of fresh catches, the fishport supports associated industries, including cold storage, transportation, and seafood retail which contributes to Lupon’s yearly tax revenue of around 20% and allows the town to make investments in infrastructures and improve community service.
The town’s economy and tax revenue are boosted by the fishport, which has also helped Lupon become a significant seafood hub in Davao Oriental by sustaining auxiliary industries and direct jobs.

Water supply shortages at Maryknoll School of Lupon, Inc. have disrupted sanitation and hydration for students and teachers, raising concerns about health and daily school operations.
With water in short supply, the school nurse struggles to provide the effective care that students need, leaving many without the timely medical attention that could prevent small issues from becoming serious problems.
Teachers living on campus find it increasingly difficult to meet their basic needs, as the lack of water hampers their ability to cook meals properly and maintain proper hygiene practices, which is essential for their well-being. Students, too, are feeling the impact of the water shortage; many are uncomfortable during bathroom breaks when there isn’t enough water available for basic sanitation, which they say, is distracting.
“Ma-challenge jud ka labi na’g need najud kayo nimo magCR unya inig abot nimo didto, walay agas ang tubig. Maayo unta ug ma-address na ni nga issue with the LWD (Lupon Water District) para dili nata mag duha-duha mogamit sa CR kay basin walay tubig,” a student commented.
[“You will really get challenged especially if you really need to use the CR (Comfort Room) and when you arrive there, there is no running water. It would be better is this issue gets addressed by the
LWD (Lupon Water District) so we will not have doubts in using the CR because water may not be available.”]
During the recent DMACSAM event, studentathletes were particularly affected, as they struggled not only with maintaining proper hygiene but also with preparing healthy meals, which disrupted their time management and performance in competitions.
Nothing appears to be real as it should.
On the 28th of October, an unexpected issue circulated within the campus of Maryknoll School of Lupon (MSLU). At exactly 2pm in the afternoon, the startling news regarding deep fake Photoshop photos of several 8th graders made its highlight towards controversy. Finding out the suspect who did such deeds are fellow classmates, the victims felt hesteric. With how AI became overly progressive, can such incidents be halted prior at time?
According to the latest statistics done by World of Photography Guild, the percentage of photographs that have been so-called Photoshopped is 32.7%. To which most are altered images of learners/young women to looked somewhat nude. This study examines the effect of media on a person’s self-image, perpetuating beauty standards, and selfindulgence.
Furthermore, there are several potential reasons for such behavior/ act. One of these can be sexual thrill or satisfaction on nudism of altered photos. With what occured in the school, nearly all students and teaching personnel discern the incident with distaste. Nobody expected this vulgar act to be done by a learner; no less a minor. For this reason, it is evident how the influence of media app and trends, overshadow the right morals a learner must possess.
Highschoolers in this generation tends to rely more on technology; in terms of entertainment, education, and many more. As such, indulging to the pit of its advancement led to various exploration and development. An example of this are ‘deep-faked photoshop’ nude photos, that opens a distorted perception of something. Leading to a cause of misinformation and cyber-bullying that can make the victims fell into deep depression, and social isolation.
Moreover, as trends begin to rapidly change from time to time, students are afraid to be outdated. Hence, they do everything that catches up to fame, even though it entirely gives a downside aftermath. Deeply demonstrating the ruling of digital age onto the the era of future

Teachers are indeed heroes that assist most young individuals to develop and nurture their skills in various fields. In fact, they are the ones who instill most forms of knowledge in their learners, especially in academics. Thus, what would happen if these teachers themselves became the reason for the manifestation of learning deficiency amongst students?
generetions to a path full of cyber dilemmas.
Additionally, a certain interpretation to the aforementioned ‘photo incident’ in MSLU, points how the 8th graders exploiting such act can be done on account of hormones raging. It may seem a very bold allegation, but regarding their current age, influence tends to induce chain of events for most of the part. Which is why media instilling supervision at a young age is essential.
Nevertheles, the recognition of artificial intelligence gained over the years is apparent. As conducted by Comptia Association, over 12.8 million active netizens on the cyberspace uses AI. Its invention leads over 60% on the world’s growth and expansion, implying it’s existence as useful. Hence, the occurance of such incidents is primarily not the AI being at fault but the learners wrongdoing.
of that, the creation of AI was solely on the purpose of delivering datas with little to no errors; a realm of comprehensive revolution.
The matter concerning with photoshopped nude photos are due to the misuse of learners to its power. Therefore, the blame should not be on AI’s broad ability to alter things,
but rather the doers abusing its capabilities.
Besides, students are responsible for the choices they make. Excessive use of mobile phones consequences to extreme lurement on keeping things techy. Thus, the matter at hand of students letting oneself be lured to media’s dark space is the cause of such actions.
Nowadays, with how things passes almost through media, no information goes unnoticed.
Comparing with previous generations, specifically in 2015s the influence of technology was never this worse. Considering such difference, it is very apparent the way cyber sharing evolves to a height full of unconventional truths.
The continuous evolvement of artificial intelligence waves the path to an impressive world
alterations. Rather than seeing it wholly as a positive change, it must also be considered as a threat to humanities moral.
With it’s wide competence, time will come for netizens to solely rely and overuse its purpose to frightful actions, that can only indicate the beginning of unsettling deeds. Starting off with the incident in relation to AI. Digital apps are useful for the greater good, still, awareness must be always present as it’s potentiality can steer to wrong choices.
In conclusion, artificial intelligence compromises the students to utilize their ability on processing and formulating ideas. Making them dependent on its abilities, that also contributes to broad media addiction and evident misuse. As a result, misdeeds and offenses are acted out on a whim

A teacher from Maryknoll School of Lupon, Inc. (MSLu) is apparently also employed at a college institute, resulting in his carrying two hefty duties. Oftentimes, he skipped his classes in MSLu, which was very unlikely to happen as he was used to utilising his time, even the slightest moments. This sort of set-up elevates the probability of his students missing a quality education. In addition, physical engagement, when it comes to education, is the most effective form of teaching amongst others. It has the ability to stimulate a focused and attentive atmosphere, resulting in a more proficient dissemination of lessons. Hence, how can it be possible if the educator has a
diminutive opportunity to be present physically to instruct?
Although Mr. Torillo (not his real name) frequently uses digital communication to extend his collaborative involvement to his role in MSLu. It is done through the most common platform, Messenger, which is used to guide his students on what things are to do. However, this may simply not be enough to nurture the minds of his learners or equip them with sufficient knowledge, as it is prone to digital reliance.
Moreover, an interview, which is the comparison between selflearnt and professional-induced knowledge, is conducted and answered by several pupils of Mr. Torillo in MSLu. The said interview shows that teachings done by him
are far more effective; he is more capable of producing accurate information in them. However, students become more self-reliant as they cannot just sit and wait while the examination is fast approaching, often resulting in inaccurate or lack of knowledge.
Mr. Torillo is indeed competent when it comes to providing quality education; his absences, however, are what seem to void it. A program to track missed lessons shall be imposed in order for the students to cope. For it to be more efficient, the learners themselves shall also be cooperative—involved individuals must take a part and not shoulder everything solely to the administrators.

s the current generation emerges, student-teacher relationships are slowly normalized and tolerated by school communities. Last school year many students in this institution has heard rumors or worse, have become witnesses to this type of relationship unfolding. In a world where every single person can do anything it desires to do and love whoever the heart longs for, no inevitable force is present to stop it whether it can cause detrimental effects to its society. To ensure a safety community and to protect the innocence of the Filipino youth, student-teacher relationships should be outlawed.
Looking closely into the issue, expressing and showing love to a person should not be a crime. There is no existing law that specifically states that to love one another is forbidden and illegal, in fact to prevent a person to love should be a crime. The world is chaotic and negativity resides in every corner, sucking up the hope and draining the joy that is within a person and as cliché it might sound, love makes the world better and bearable.
On the contrary, as Vice President Sara Duterte – former Department of Education (DepEd) secretary – started her role as the head of DepEd she reported that she immediately encountered multiple disturbing and painful stories about learners being victims of sexual abuse. Normalizing student-teacher relationships would greatly inflict harm on school communities, making every student prone to the severe danger that hides inside of abominated hearts.
Nonetheless, not every single teacher desires to exploit and abuse the student they have a relationship with. Loving someone is not an illicit act and no one has ever been harmed because of feeling or expressing it.
PDA (public displays of affection) is a controversial topic within the campus of both public and private schools. The students doing such physical intimacy may perceive this as a simple act of exhibiting affection, but a certain number of spectators find this quite bothersome and an eyesore.
A certain page inside the MSLU handbook entails intimate gestures such as hugging, kissing, handholding, and cuddling with the opposite/same sex must be kept on a decent measure, much better if avoided. Abiding the basis of how a school exists with the prime purpose to educate, not as an area for exhibitionism on the learner’s endearment. Even so, can this be enough to justify how unwritten rules of public affection can be limited and restricted?
According to the recent school survey, done on the 31st of October, “As a student, do you agree to ban PDA?”. Out of 100 responses, 66.8% answered yes, 4% no, while some remained neutral on the issue at 29.2%. This indicates that the majority of students find intimacy done in public a distraction. Inside the school campus, teenagers and professional adults are bound by proper etiquette and manners; any deeds that can disrupt teaching or learning are perceived as unacceptable. That is why such acts are at best kept or done in private or secluded places, of course, with limits and extent. After all, even among peers, not everyone shares the same view on such sorts. Furthermore, various studies cite that displaying affection in public can lead to potential discomfort to others and a cause for difficulty in maintaining professional behavior. Since students are mainly the initiators, being responsible for one’s action is a rule to follow. Hugs, kisses, and other forms of gestures can appear as traditional greetings
Outlawing Student-Teacher Relationships Among School Communities Effects of Out-of-Field Teaching to the Efficacy of Learning
Trailing back to the harmful effects of student-teacher relationships, even if some teachers has no plans to manipulate a student, it is still very risky and treacherous to tolerate and legalize it. Due to the gruesome effects that it can create, DepEd recently issued DepEd order No. 49 s. 2022. This order states that school officials and employees are prohibited to have relationships, interaction, and communication outside the school setting. If school communities tolerate and normalize studentteacher relationships it would open a huge opportunity for sexual predators to execute their dark and harmful agendas.
Student-teacher relationships are a serious problem dwelling inside learning institutions. To patch up this issue, school communities should not normalize and tolerate it occurring. Teachers should also give more value to their professionalism and should be wise and responsible to the actions and decisions they take to not put their job on the line. Through this, we can ensure a safety community for students away from the harm that sexual predators inflict.
A school community should be a place where students can learn and achieve their goals far from any threats and harm that disrupts their academic journey. Student-teacher relationship may not always be harmful but it definitely increases the possibility of sexual predators to attack and manipulate students. With all of this, relationships between a student and a teacher should be prevented and outlawed to extinguish student exploitation.
and somewhat normative, but as time passes, teenagers only seem to grow bolder and out of control. Couples who act with indifference do not keenly see that being overly affectionate can be offensive to many people. Hence, conducting minimal/moderate contacts should be observed.
Nonetheless, some students express the idea of ‘banning’ PDA too much. Say, in a situation of mingling with close friends, hugs and handholding are pretty much part of familiarity and closeness with one another. The objective of completely disallowing such gestures is positive, yet the method done can’t simply eliminate the concept of displaying affection. It is part of everyday habits to engage in some sort of touch with other people. The key is to keep it to a considerable extent to which the school finds respectable and comfortable by all.
To sum this up, public affection is an act of couples and even close friends in conveying fondness for each other. In totality, it does not justify being a distraction. Though sometimes learners doing such acts tend to be caught in the moment, for that reason schools must educate, as they should be, regarding character education programs. It cannot be immediately expected for students to follow the practice of forbidding what is normally done, but with guidance, seeds of awareness will sprout in their minds.
Needless to say, warnings and advice aren’t enough to control students’ behavior. Therefore, rules and regulations are implemented within the bounds of the school. As a matter of fact, adolescents tend to let stubborn desire run and lead on decision-making through most situations. These behaviors, while innocent on some levels, can quickly evolve into something more; take, for example, failing on major subjects and, worse, teenage pregnancy. For this reason, prohibiting PDA rather than words of advice or warnings is a better action in order to halt any

Yet, they often encounter numerous challenges that disrupt their professional journey, with out-of-field teaching being a significant issue. With that, out-of-field teaching must be avoided, as it diminishes students’ learning proficiency and creates a disordered state of education for determined young learners.
possible unwanted outcomes that can destroy a learner’s future. With that being said, it is important to note that lighthearted gestures towards fellow peers in public, especially within school premises, can be quite inappropriate for the eyes of others. It’s a rationale deed to do hugs, kisses on the cheek, handholding, and many more as a form of expressing love, greetings, and a sign of familiarity with another. In addition, when teachers are asked to teach unfamiliar subject areas, they may lack the depth of knowledge or confidence needed. Many teachers agree that when teaching a subject they have littleto-no knowledge about, they can feel pressured and less confident than if they teach a subject they’re qualified in since different subjects often require unique teaching methods.
that, a teacher with expertise in a specific field understands these methods and knows how to use the right strategies to help students understand difficult concepts.
The lack of teachers is a great problem faced by the country’s educational system. Every year thousands of Filipinos graduate with a degree in education and with enough experience the Department of Education should include them to be one of the new educators being the vessels of knowledge and hope for young dreamers, while also resolving the challenges posed by the lack of teachers.

In the world of education, subject knowledge plays a crucial role in effective teaching. When a teacher knows a subject well, they have more confidence and can give a flexible learning environment, unlike teachers who have little knowledge of that subject. Additionally, the teacher can teach more effectively and can offer the students credible information about the subject. Above that, it also depends on how knowledgeable the teacher is, as it can greatly affect the learning atmosphere.
On October 24, 2024, a massive fire broke out in the busy streets of the Lupon public market in Davao Oriental. The fire caused significant damage to businesses affected by the fire, which left computers, plasticware, wood, and other items to ashes and rubble.
The fire alarmed the townspeople, sending them to panic and gather at the site, giving the rescuers and the fire brigade a hard time making sure that people were safe. As seen on social media, multiple residents of Lupon who were present at the fire were doing a livestream, getting closer and closer to capture as much detail as possible. On top of that, students can sense when a teacher struggles with content, which can lead to decreased confidence in the subject or even doubting the educational system. If a teacher isn’t confident in teaching that subject, how will the students also learn confidently too?
Furthermore, it can also negatively impact the result in the student’s learning. Teachers who teach subjects which are not in their line of expertise may experience difficulty teaching it to students. They may not fully explain it to the students because they themselves don’t understand it. As a result, students are left hanging and are forced to refer to other sources so that they can learn. We believe that teachers with a background and training in a particular subject often bring a deeper understanding of the material. ducation bridges a youth’s present life towards a future brimming with hope where dreams of success can easily be grasped, however, due to many issues surrounding our educational system the quality of education given to the Filipino youth drastically collapsed. Learning poverty is one of the greatest adversary faced by young learners, in fact, nine out of ten children at ages 10 in the Philippines still struggles to read and comprehend simple text. It is through learning where children are fostered to be the upholders of our nation in the near future, the government should take measures to patch up learning poverty and mend the damage it has inflicted toFilipino’s education.
Digging deeper into the issue, one of the main causes of learning poverty is because of how poorly education is implemented among schools. On the East Asia and Pacific region the teachers in the Philippines has one of the most ineffective methods of teaching according to World Bank.Educators have spent 4 years in mastering the subjects they teach and without a doubt they surely have enough knowledge with it but the method of teaching that the Department of Education (DepEd) implemented was the one lacking, being ineffective, impractical and inefficient.
Furthermore, a handful of teachers nationwide are not taking their responsibility seriously causing detrimental effects to the quality of education they give to their students. A World Bank report found that 40% of students in the Philippine surveysaid they had teachers who were sometimes or often missing in class. Teachers must be the agents helping to aid and patch up this issue, instead they have been irresponsible and has been the reason why it immensely intensified, pushing the state of the country’s education under deeper depths.
Adding to the complexity of the issue, the lack of budget in improving the teaching facilities in institutions also has been the reason contributing to learning poverty. Based on The Diplomat reports, out of the country’s 327,000 school buildings, merely less than a third are in good condition. School facilities essential in having just basic education but the country disappointingly cannot supply it making the goal to have quality education be an impossible feat to achieve. Moreover, the words, change, improvement, and reform has always been the ones brimming in the mouths of politicians. Instead of addressing and acting upon current issues like learning poverty they only utter promises that ends up forgotten and overshadowed by their personal agendas. These people should have been the ones leading the country to betterment and progress, however, they are the ones worsening the storms that

“Money is the root of all evil.” Corruption, as defined by Merriam-Webster.com, is dishonest or illegal behavior, especially by powerful individuals. In the Philippines, people often link corruption to government officials since they are of higher power and are the most notable examples in this context. This is also because the Philippines is undeniably filled with hungry pigs, who can’t get enough of stuffing their faces with the people’s money.
According to Inquirer.net, in their article entitled “A look at how corruption works in the Philippines,” posted on March 13, 2023, the Philippines is perceived to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Of 180 countries, the Philippines ranked 116 in terms of being the least corrupt. This means that the country belongs to the top countries that are the most corrupt. Moreover, corruption is not only observable in the Philippine government but also in other public and private organizations where people of higher power take the lead. A significant example of this outside of Philippine politics is the pocketed 15 billion peso allegation against PhilHealth, which spiraled in 2020. But dishonesty regarding money does not only happen with big companies like PhilHealth but also with small institutions within local regions.
Private institutions such as Maryknoll School of Lupon, Inc.
encourage students to pay a tuition fee to be enrolled in the school. Although most students are granted a scholarship, they still have to pay 1,000-2,000 pesos a month for them to be able to take their monthly exams, which is said to be what pays the staff their significantly low salary and the school’s maintenance. So during school activities, the administration claims to have insufficient funds to conduct the said activity. With numerous students paying for tuition every month, are they sure that each peso is spent as they claim?
Additionally, the funds are not properly illustrated and broken down. “Sa mga PTA Meeting, entirety lang man ilahang ginapakita, wala man gani nila gina isa isa ug pagkita kung aha na napadulong ang mga kwarta,” a Maryknollian parent claimed during an interview. The money is not properly illustrated where it has been distributed, which is why parents and even students wonder why the administration cannot provide an adequate amount of funds even for food, especially for inter-school events like the Division Schools Press Conference.
However, during the Diocese of Mati Catholic Schools Athletic Meet held recently at the institution, the school was able to accommodate delegates from different schools and fund the needs

of the school’s very own Maryknoll School of Lupon Greyhounds. They were able to provide food and the necessary equipment needed for the school. Yet they still needed to hand out solicitation letters for financial support.
When it came to school events like culmination month celebrations, club presidents still had to roam the campus, going doorto-door in each classroom, asking for 10-20 pesos to buy decorations for the event. Although it was only a small amount, it still took a portion or even all of the student’s lunch money or transportation fare. Why can’t the school give money for something as simple as decorations?
It’s not fair if the administration is just blatantly accused of being corrupt, though a student, as part of what makes up the institution, is allowed to wonder exactly where all the money is going to. Show the facts, the receipts, where you spent every peso that the students and parents have provided for the school, and then shall your every move not be questioned.
Prove and defend every one of your statements so as not to taint the institution’s great name. Maybe they really are being dishonest, or maybe they just choose not to disclose information about it. Either way, we will never know unless they answer our questions, if it really is corruption or just confidential.
loom above our country. Learning poverty greatly hampers the youth to reach and grasp the life they have been yearning for. To patch up this hope-sucking issue, the method of learning imposed by DepEd should be revamped and improved. Teachers should also take their responsibility in our community seriously since the knowledge gained by students are from them. The allotted budget in our educational system should also be increased to ensure that quality education will occur. As citizens of this nation, we need to choose politicians whom are responsible and truthful in their service to our country so that issues like this can certainly be addressed. With all of this, learning poverty exists and the longer it will surround our educational system while not getting patched up, the nation’s future will be at stake. Education is what guides and pushes the youth to take the steps towards the life they want to live.
In the Philippines, despite having learning poverty it still teaches us to take the journey but only with tip toe steps.
TThese people should have been the ones leading the country to betterment and progress, however, they are the ones worsening the storms that loom above our country. “

hey mold the nation’s future, yet for private school teachers, the present is often defined by a paycheck that barely sustains their most basic needs, leaving them struggling to provide for themselves while they dedicate their lives to educating others.
Recently, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers Private Schools (ACT – Private Schools) revealed in a survey that insufficient salaries ranked as the top issue among private school teachers, with a concerning 88% indicating this problem. This finding resonates with teachers at Maryknoll School of Lupon, Inc., which is a significant concern that cannot be ignored. The root of this issue can be traced back to several factors, one of which is the school’s location.
The ACT has also emphasized that private school teachers in rural and provincial schools earn substantially less than entry-level public-school teachers, who receive government-mandated rates.Given that Maryknoll School is located in the Municipality of Lupon, Davao Oriental—a first-class municipality in the southeastern part of Mindanao— hugely contribute to this fact. The scarcity of resources, the population density of the area, and student enrollment numbers continues to drive this issue.
considered overload. Such wages barely cover monthly bills, let alone additional responsibilities like loans and insurance, leaving teachers struggling financially.
These factors contribute to a 33% resignation rate at MSLu over the last six months, as many teachers either seek better opportunities abroad or find units in public schools. Additionally, in a survey conducted by The Bridge Press, 57.1% of teachers responded ‘Neutral’ to the question of whether the school provides adequate resources and support. This response suggests that while teachers may not feel wholly unsupported, they likely find the resources insufficient to meet their professional and financial needs effectively.
attempts to douse the flames were more efficient. However, their efforts were still delayed due to an insufficient supply of water.
9:32 PM was when it was officially declared that the fire was completely extinguished. Private school teachers are trapped in a cycle where their hardwork and dedication to education goes unrewarded and they are forced to settle for salaries that barely allow them to make ends meet. This stark reality not only undervalues their contributions but also jeopardizes the quality of education they provide to students. As they mold the nation’s future, it is a must that we, as students, take action by advocating for fair compensation and adequate resources for our educators. After all, they deserve better and so do we. lost their livelihood, it serves as a lesson for everyone else. Instead of going live on Facebook and trying to capture every bit of the disaster, learn to step away and be vigilant. You might get so busy on your phone that you won’t notice when your clothes get caught in the fire because of being too near. Moreover, local rescue teams and other involved personnel should improve their alertness, especially during times like this. May everyone learn to stay safe and alert during emergency situations if we don’t want it to be the end of us all.
Lack of common sense and preparation is the perfect recipe for an even bigger disaster.

93.3% of teachers in (DEPED) earn less than the family living wage
Additionally, there is another void that the school fails to fill. Although stated in their objectives, “to upgrade regularly the learning and professional skills of the faculty and staff,” it is nearly impossible to give it form given the high rate of teacher resignations each year. The primary reason often comes back to low wages, creating a cycle that hinders steady faculty development and keeps teachers in a state of ongoing uncertainty, making professional growth seem out of reach. We say that teachers are the backbone of the society, yet, how can they stand firm when their own burdens outweigh their earnings?
According to statistics, 60% of licensed teachers in private educational institutions receive pay below the current minimum wage, which is about 21,250 pesos per month. This rings true especially at MSLu, where the basic salary for teachers is only 12,000 pesos monthly, with an additional 3,500 pesos if they take on seven classes which can already be

For many educational institutions, administrative rules and regulations are placed to foster order and organization. While it may seem well-intentioned, the administrative oversight often hinders the institution from becoming what it was originally made for – learning and education. One such case is a private school with a relatively small population of 800 students, where the efficiency of these rules has become a point of contention among students and teachers alike. While the school boasts of numerous resources and facilities, accessing them requires one to navigate a bureaucratic maze that seems to undermine the very purpose these resources are supposed to serve.
The process by which students and faculty must obtain permission to use even the most basic school equipment is at the heart of this issue. Reserving a classroom, accessing sports facilities, or borrowing tables –seemingly simple tasks – demand a series of signatures from no fewer than three individuals from students, teachers, and administration. The process is not only time consuming but often feels like an unnecessary burden for those who are simply seeking to enhance their learning or extracurricular activities.
For teachers and students, what could be a straightforward request becomes a drawn-out ordeal, which involves multiple letters, signatures, meetings, and forms. This level of administrative oversight might be well-intentioned, but it raises questions about the efficacy and efficiency of such process. What began as a way to maintain control and ensure the proper use of resources has now morphed into an unwieldy system that discourages initiative, delays projects, and fosters frustration.
Even more concerning is the influence this bureaucracy has on the culture of the school. Instead of promoting creativity, collaboration, and a sense of empowerment, the complex approval process often leaves both teachers and students feeling disillusioned as though their time and energy are being wasted.
In a school that should be a place of innovation and growth, the administration’s red tape acts as a barrier rather than a facilitator. It raises the question of whether such practices reflect the values of the institution or simply serve to uphold outdated systems of control.
The challenge, of course, is finding a balance. On one hand, administrative oversight is necessary to ensure resources are being used responsibly. On the other, it should not hinder progress or stifle the very spirit of education the school is meant to foster. Streamlining the process or reducing the number of approvals needed could go a long way toward freeing up time and energy for more productive pursuits, whether academic or extracurricular.
In an era where efficiency and adaptability are key to success, the school could benefit from reassessing its current policies and embracing a more flexible, studentcentered approach to resource management.
Ultimately, the goal should be to create an environment where resources are available when needed and where the process to access them encourages productivity and creativity rather than impeding it. If the administration of this school truly wishes to uphold its mission of providing a high-quality education, it must ask itself: is the bureaucracy truly serving the students, or is it simply creating another hurdle to overcome?
Can the mere presence of an authority be enough to emanate the beginning of progress to success? Coordinator is a position that enacts. Yet what if, he simply reacts and does not act?
Maryknoll School of Lupon’s Drum and Bugle Corps (DBC) notable performances have long been the talk of the town. With the combination of euphonic and resonant percussion, as well as the performers’ eye-catching customized outfit pieces, being in the spotlight is not out of reach. They never fail to elicit good feedback and admiration from the audience. That as a result, the school’s reputation, as well as people’s notions, were elevated to new heights. However, maintaining one’s legacy of greatness and exceeding others’ expectations is easier said than done. And the school year 2024-2025 appears to be no exception when it comes to being targeted with a “recurring problem” inside the drum and bugle corps.
Being quoted as dissonant and uncoordinated, the current DBC, handled by its coordinator, Mr. Boris Hans Maquilan, lost the shimmer it held over the years as being a dominant figure in the field of performing ensembles. Amidst preparation and corrections, students who perform cannot fill the gap of stepping up the game.

The awarding ceremony was just as spine-chilling as their victory.

Every team was determined to win and bag the title of champion for the said event. But what happens if, during the awarding ceremony, danza en cuatro turns into danza en otso?
Before the competition officially started, the guidelines for the contest were properly read out. As stated, all rankings were final and irrevocable. That said, with their outfits on and their shoelaces tied, the dancers were ready to showcase their breathtaking moves. As the host announced the start of the event, cheers and yells echoed throughout the gymnasium, giving the dancers a boost of confidence.

Dear Editor,
The pursuit of academic validation has become a growing concern in today’s educational environment. Many students prioritize high grades over genuine learning, driven by intense pressure from family, peers, and societal expectations. This focus on outcomes rather than understanding fosters academic dishonesty and undermines the true purpose of education, which is to develop critical thinking, practical skills, and personal growth.
of October 2024, various delegates and onlookers throughout the opening parade openly criticized the school’s DBC. Stating in hopes of reaching their expectancy, it was rather somewhat the opposite. The performers, seen as the standard by everybody, now unfortunately exhibits quite the laughing stock of a show. To which even some of the performing students come to agree. Indicating how the aforementioned ensemble is slowly turning to a chagrin fit.
Further insinuating that the absence of its coordinator from time totime greatly affects the groups’ motivation and improvement.
Coming from the assistant school director, Mr. Alche Daclan Carriedo, interviewed on the 1st of October, he stated, “If I were to be honest, based on my observation, it lacks authority, maybe? in holding the students, and at the same time lacks supervision; that is one thing that I can annotate.”
This statement not only justifies the issue at hand but also led to the question, “Did the coordinator accept the position with the goal of attaining more than the previous achievements, or simply out of respect to whomever asked them to take on that position?”.
Truth be told, Mr. Hans Maquilan is seen frequently present during practices. Guiding the majorettes and lyricists when getting off-key, but most of the time he focuses on supervising the drummers. The lack of authority/

control is evidently at hand. What may appear for him as satisfactory does not really match the overall execution; the majority of the learners performing elicits a lack of attention and energy in what they are doing, which was not taken that much into account and should be corrected. Hence, thrown off to an uneven attention of improving each subset.
Regardless of this, actions were taken in order to outbalance the outweighing scale of unsatisfactory results. Every day is not an exception to slack around; participating learners are instructed to be on time, especially if a signed performance is right around the corner. With the pivotal lead of Mr. Maquilan, along with two other workforces—Ms. Buladaco and Ms. Salientes, they utilize effort on honing and refining the subset’s skills. Ensuring the in-sync tunes of lyres and drums, precise moves of majorettes, and scanning even the smallest detail in need of correction and improvement.
With coordination, unswerving commitment, and continuous guidance, outcomes will turn for the better. Hurdles may have challenged the group, but the coordinator’s endeavor is a force to be reckoned with. His commitment, alongside the students’ intent to be the best of the best, serves as the key to cooperation. Thus, it led to positive progress.
It is time to redefine what success in education truly means. Schools, families, and teachers must collaborate to create programs that reward creativity, teamwork, and real-world application, shifting the emphasis from grades to holistic development. Education should empower students to thrive not just academically, but in life, reminding us all that grades are merely a reflection of the journey toward knowledge and self-improvement.
Respectfully yours,

Dear Maryknoller,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on such an important issue. We understand your concerns about the excessive focus on grades and how it impacts the true purpose of learning. Your suggestion to emphasize creativity, skills, and teamwork is a valuable reminder of what education should strive to achieve, and we wholeheartedly support this perspective.

eyebrows were raised, and we were left in shock when they announced two Champions that night. According to Marnie Alberca, a member of the Maryknoll Thrones Dance Troupe, there was a conflict between how they declared the winner on Cultural Night 1 and the actual guidelines for the event. According to the guidelines, the announcement should be based on the ranking system of each judge and not how many points they earned. Since IHMA ranked 1st out of the 3 judges, they claimed that they were the rightful champions, but MSLu scored more for overall points. Moreover, the participants of IHMA came up with a way for both teams to compromise. They suggested that since the event required 4 dancers and there were 8 of them, they had to choose 2 members from each team to represent the Diocese of Mati during the DADITAMA. Aside from it being unfair for both teams to break their bonds with their
teammates, it would be a hassle for them to train and practice, especially since they suggested that they would visit Lupon only on weekends. Marnie then went on to joke about how they should just train through video call if that would be the case.
Regardless, the MSLu team decided that if they weren’t going to compete together, then none of them would compete at all. IHMA added that since 2 of their dancers would eventually leave and choose to compete in their respective individual events, it was only fair for them. Since they would eventually leave the group, why can’t they give up the event for MSLu whose members are complete?
To be honest, it was neither of the participating schools’ fault; it was the people who were in charge of making sure that the ranking was accurate and the announcement was according to the guidelines. They were wrong to have gotten our hopes up, because we honestly would have accepted defeat if they just announced it properly. Nonetheless, we believe that the announcement is irrevocable and that the Maryknoll School of Lupon Thrones Dance Troupe are the real Champions, and that it should have remained as danza en cuatro, not danza en otso, to receive the award of CHAMPION on that stage.

An abrupt change to the operation for the competition in the photojournalism category took place in the recent Division School’s Press Conference (DSPC) held in Baganga National Highschool on November 19-24, 2024. Instead of having eliminations composed of three rounds for the selection of qualifiers for the Regional School’s Press Conference (RSPC) 2024, only one round was held. Lack of attentive management is not solely the matter but also the chance to result in an imprudent selection of winners due to being unable to attest their consistency.
The eliminations were firmly built to test the capabilities and potentials of each competitor to remain outstanding throughout several stages. Only those chosen ones who possess the rightful qualities can proceed to the following rounds; therefore, competent ones are to be selected. Hence, with this set-up, the appointment of the most deserving participants is quite vague; they are most likely to take unfit spots.
Moreover, the organizers’ lack of management skills is undeniably witnessed, revealing their weakness in creating a responsible operation. In fact, there were multiple errors and changes to the schedule during
the days of the event, engulfing everyone in disappointment. This sort of disarray had established the unpleasant venture for the individuals who put in an effort to join the said event and had their hopes vanished.
Furthermore, young journalists had an expectation to further expose their talents in their respective fields and eventually experience a fluent run. Most of them even had their preparation ready just to execute a decent battle and return home satisfied. Thus, the incident was certainly a pursuit of failure and dismay to their excited approach to the competition as they were deprived of a longer duration of contest.
The mess that occurred in the DSPC 2024 has affected the entirety of the event, from the attendees to the organization, and especially to the selection of victors. Now that everything is done and cannot be changed, the responsible individuals should extend their effort to ensure the consistency and competency of selected campus journalists who will be representing the division of Davao Oriental. I truly believe that their winning is not questionable, but a proper honing is necessary as they will be facing a bigger challenge.

In the midst of darkness, sympathy remains the light.
A decent portion of individuals from the Maryknoll School of Lupon (MSLu), Inc. population is identified as members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) community— approximately eight of 50 students. Cross-dressing and wearing makeup are frequently associated with them in pursuit of their identification. Thus, these validations are massive factors that firmly develop their growth and self-fulfillment.
The institute itself runs a rule wherein students, especially those
When teachers cross the line, who holds them accountable?
Professionalism is a crucial standard for educators, as stated in the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers (Philippine Republic Act No. 7836). Teachers are expected to treat their students with fairness, impartiality, and emotional management in every situation. Unfortunately, what happened at MSLu on December 13, 2024, revealed a troubling lapse in these standards, calling into question the responsibility that comes with the role of being an educator.
On that day, a classroom conflict between two students, Christian and Aira (not their real names), escalated into chaos due to their adviser’s inappropriate behavior. Instead of de-escalating the situation, the adviser, Ms. Sarah (not her real name), worsened it by shouting, slamming tables, and allowing emotions to take control. This is a clear violation of Section 3 of the Code of Ethics, which mandates that teachers maintain a dignified and respectable demeanor to uphold the integrity of the teaching profession.
Ms. Sarah’s actions caused severe distress, with some students experiencing panic and anxiety attacks, causing one to be rushed to the hospital. Under Article 218 of the Family Code, schools and teachers hold special parental authority and responsibility over children under their supervision. With this, teachers are expected to ensure the safety and well-being of students under their care. Allowing such chaos not only compromised the students’ mental health but also turned the classroom into a toxic environment.
Prior to this incident, Ms. Sarah repeatedly crossed professional boundaries by humiliating students in front of the class. She forced one student to hold a book in their palms as punishment, singled out another to stand before the class just to get scolded, and even kept an entire class until nearly six in the evening as a form of discipline. These actions are a direct violation of the DepEd Child Protection Policy, which strictly prohibits such mistreatment, exposing her lack of professionalism and disregard for basic ethical standards.
Ms. Sarah’s unannounced absence following the incident raises further questions about professional accountability. Teachers are expected to serve as role models, however, by avoiding her duties for more than a week, she showed an image of disregard for the consequences of her actions and the needs of her students. This is inconsistent with the professional standards as stated in the Philippine Teachers’ Professionalization Act. The chaos at MSLu exposed a disgraceful lack of professionalism, despite policies meant to protect students. Teachers are entrusted with children’s safety, yet incidents like this prove that these protections are nothing more than empty words. Schools must stop turning a blind eye to misconducts and implement stronger accountability measures to ensure no child endures such harm again.
When those entrusted to shape young minds become the very source of their suffering, the system is not just broken—it is complicit.
Maryknoll School of Lupon, Inc. has hosted various activities that showcase jubilance for the school year 2024-2025. Together with it is a pile of work given to students which dragged them under pressure. Oftentimes, students become wholly tired, enquiring for mental and physical purification.
Most teachers are assigned to different extracurricular fields, nurturing and equipping participants with appropriate skills.
biologically male, are prohibited from wearing make-up. Under Article 2: General Guidelines, Section 7, No. 9 of the student’s handbook, “Wearing of make-up and bling-blings is a violation of the dress code.” Others’ viewpoint sees it as a pursuit of informality as they are believed to be a contradiction to societal customs. Additionally, a prohibition from wearing a uniform of the opposite sex is strictly implemented in MSLu. Trisha Mae O. Yuson, a Grade 11 student from Section Saint James the Great, is, in fact, forced to wear a female uniform even though it is against her will. Thus, it is seen
as another form of indecency, an indication of a total alteration to regularity.
On the other hand, these practices scale heavily in fortifying their visibility and representation inside the institute. A massive sigh of comfort for them—it encourages them to be more persistently active. Imagine if this model of support is formally engraved; they would be more confident in demonstrating their capabilities.
Moreover, these elements may be casual for others, but they are a foundation for “gay people’s” self-attribution. This
Have them immersed in a tight schedule, causing them to be less academically active. With that, a great decrease for draining days and a manifestation of decent free times are willingly fostered. evokes heartwarming feelings in them, promoting a deep sense of a welcoming and validating approach. This is not intended solely to create inclusivity within but also to boost the hospitable atmosphere that MSLu possesses. Furthermore, cross-dressing and wearing make-up are not designed to trigger chaos but rather the opposite. They were formed to create a space of freedom for LGBTQ+ members—after all, it causes no harm to anybody. Thus, they are not merely forms of expression; they function as pillars of acceptance for the subjects.

portion, resulting in a huge cut to their supposedly “work-free” schedule. Fortunately, the school was being unconditionally generous to provide their constituents with adequate duration for coping up. This must be maintained to openhandedly compensate students for their outstanding performances. The only key to getting freed is to have these undertakings finished.
by: MARKGRANADA
In summary, these practices should be permitted as long as they come with limitations to impose guidelines. Engulf MSLu with a harmonious approach, setting it as a battlefield containing lightweight. However, if invasion beyond their freedom arises, then that is the time the administration interferes with the operation.
That light shines brightly only when invigorated with a helping hand.

Nestled in the vibrant coastal communities of Mindanao, the Badjaos, often referred to as “street brats” or “sea gypsies,” embody a unique culture deeply intertwined with the ocean and the streets in the bustling town of Lupon. Their rich heritage, resilience, and traditional lifestyle offer a fascinating glimpse into a world where the sea and the streets are both home and livelihood.
In Lupon, many have settled in coastal areas, maintaining their traditional practices while adapting to the realities of modern life. The palengke serves as a central hub for commerce and social interaction, where Badjao vendors sell fresh seafood, handcrafted goods, and other local products. Lupon is known for being one of the homes of Badjaos that originated and scattered all across Davao Oriental. Garnished with pure cultural talents together with uniquely improvised tradition.
Despite their colorful presence, the Badjaos face significant challenges. Issues such as poverty, lack of access to education, and marginalization threaten their way of life. Many community members strive to balance traditional practices with the demands of contemporary society, navigating the complexities of urban life while preserving their heritage.
The Badjaos in Lupon are known for chaotic conduct and disrespectful manner. Over the years, the Badjaos in Lupon have occupied a behavior disliked by some locals especially those who are in a high status or in terminology — “Matapobre”.
The Badjaos often convey requests towards the people around them in an unlikeable strategy; they approach people directly and ask for money even though they
are obviously capable of working to make ends meet or provide for themselves. Some even follow individuals wherever path they step just to receive what they want, resulting in chaos in which whoever Badjao is unlucky to meet strangers with shallow patience. Nevertheless, there are still countless Badjao who are following and still navigates the traditional approach in which they channel a good impression and persuasion from locals or to whom their target may be. They play harmonic songs by tapping and clicking objects or using their hand-made instruments as initiative. Others also hand envelopes, letters or any kind of paper that consists of what requests they’re trying to convince their target. Some may also run small businesses such as selling thrift shoes and displaying its vibrancy beside roads and other unoccupied spaces within the town. Badjaos away from streets of the town often conquer a rich history characterized by a nomadic lifestyle at sea. They live along coastal areas and beach lines signifying a pure purpose to the waters, they act as caretakers and somehow showcase their connection to the sea by roaming around Lupon selling freshly caught fish, crabs, shrimps, and every gift from the ocean possible; they even also come to the market trading their products to the fish vendors to earn for a living.
As they are members of indigenous group, they play importance and raise significance in terms of the town’s cultural heritage and blissful vibrancy in which Badjaos contribute meaningful art when it comes to independence and unique strategies in life. It raised the historical strength of the town, embodying the connections between locals and indigenous individuals with pure acceptance and respect. Lupon wouldn’t be this type of town without the presence of Badjaos. The Badjaos stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of maritime cultures. Their ability to adapt while maintaining a strong connection to their heritage is an inspiring narrative in an everchanging world. As communities and individuals work together to support the Badjaos, their story serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving cultural diversity and protecting the seas that sustain us all.
As they are comprised with huge responsibilities even in whatever status they have, Badjao never wore unpleasant smiles to greet whoever they meet. Despite being underestimated, misjudged, and even neglected by the society, Bajaos even today will make us realize and understand how difficult but a roller coaster ride it is— wearing the shoes they have.
In a linear place that marks the end of two essentials bodies of the earth where the chaos of the land meets the loud roar of the waves, a sanctuary is made amidst the encounter of two opposing forces. An asylum to those people who lives because of the sea and feeds off its treasures, where the salty scent of the sea is rich in the air and the noise of the crashing waves is endlessly audible. The shoreline offers great refuge especially to the people who inhabits it — coastal people.
Less than a kilometer away from the walls of this institution lies a shoreline home to countless of coastal people and a couple of them is the Manggunga family, Mario and Josefina. For thirty-two years, the gifts from the sea are what keeps them surviving in this world’s endless fight to live. It is both the waves and their hope to make ends meet that bestowed Mario the job of being a “mananagat” [fisherman]. With only a small boat, a fishing net, a bucket of baits, and his heart for fishing, he manages to bridge the gap between money and them. “Every day makaearn mi sauna ug five hundred to one thousand depende sa panahon” Josefina said.
However, the tides drastically changed. The sanctuary the shoreline offered was now just a thing from the past and had merely became a part of history. “Diperensiya na gyud sauna ug karon” Mario said. “Karon five hundred ang pinakataas, usahay two hundred ra” Josefina added. Without warning, the shorelines
essential power to offer refuge, stability, and a living suddenly disappeared and became lackluster. With years of life like this, the Manggunga family have no choice but to accept the harsh reality that is difficult to swallow because giving up is not an option for Mario for they do not have other sources of income rather than the fishes they get from the depths of the sea. The culprits inflicting the wreck in their livelihood was the influx of mananagat in their shoreline, and money-hungry lawbreakers. “Ang among problema kanang panagatan dira sa daplin [i]wala unta na. Dapat gikan diri ngadto sa fifteen meters, dili na palawran sa mga dagkong lantsa” Josefina said. “Unya kay dili naman na matuman ron ang fifteen meters” Mario added. This issue has been their greatest adversary pushing them to double their sacrifices just to have sufficient needs. With the current unforgiving prices of goods coupled with their income swiftly decreasing, what becomes of their future will not be pleasant. Furthemore, intensifying the hardships among coastal people like the Manggunga family are actually those we least expect — lawmakers, people in the pedestal. “Kaming mga mananagat nireklamo gyud mi ana nga sa lawod ra gyud and mga lantsa kaning fifteen meters saamo raning mga gagmay. Pero wala raman gihapon. Nonsense ra” Mario’s wife uttered. “Wala nila ginalihok among mga reklamo sa mga mananagat diha” “Naa juy
batas, galing lang kay ang batas natabunan ug kwarta” Mario added. These authorities and lawmakers are known to protect the people and the quality life they deserve but they tend to overlook the people in the coasts and neglect the shorelines. Without much contained in their coffers, the only shelter they can only rely on now shielding them from a storm’s outpouring of rain while also giving warmth through cold and still nights is their ramshackle nipa huts. In fact, relying to the huts in their community required not just a leap of faith but a flying one since a week of bad weather and storms can leave it into fragments. This is one of the many effects inflicted by the poor status of fishing for a mananagat like Mario forcing them to accept and be contented on what they have. To sustain their needs, Mario’s daily sacrifices is what keeps their table far from being empty. He gets on his boat before the crowing of a rooster wakes up their community hoping that the water would be merciful towards his boat and the scorching sun would be gentle on his skin. Thus, leaving Josefina wishing that the sea will hear her plea and the waves will return his husband back to her. Mario stays afloat in the sea for 10 hours if he gets lucky in a day of good weather and if not, he would return with empty buckets cruelly not repaying the sacrifice he made, but he still keeps his hopes up that someday a miracle would come and the sanctuary the shoreline would be restored.

Once upon a time, in an intertwining tale of love and chivalry lies the antagonist of the story. For several years love had been redefined solely, from once being an act of true love to simply fitting in to society’s standards. Amidst the drama that’s constantly uprising true love remains unsolvable with numerous cases questioning the nature behind love’s façade.
Love stems from a vast world of admiration and sacrifice, it is one’s ability to give something up in order to lift your other half. Love holds so much power that could change the world, and through that immense power love changed people and it let them enter a new world of selfdiscovery. In ancient times being in love is when you’re in a relationship with someone of the opposite sex
and make your own offspring. It’s in these sudden times that love is present within us. However, in recent times the LGBTQ community has been the new talk on the town. The emergence of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer community brought a big impact for everyone resulting in deeper self-discovery. This way they are able to better express themselves and love their true selves in their new identity. Through the influence of LGBTQ, same sex relationships had been currently running wild. Having a relationship with the same sex is now the new normal, with multiple

couples proving to us that love isn’t just what’s seen in the outside but its what’s within that matters.
Although LGBTQ and same sex relationship had been a great help in discovering one’s identity, a lot of people took it the other way around, especially the Catholic Institution. They believed that being in a relationship with the opposite sex should be the standard, as according to their belief same sex relationship is beyond what’s written in the scriptures. The LGBTQ hand in hand with the same sex relationship exceeds religious sensitivity and therefore the Catholic Institution stands tall and completely oppose the thought of having same sex
relationship reign. Members of the LGBTQ community and those who are in a same sex relationship endured it really hard. With the standards of the society currently uprising, many are drowning in the depths of their shattered tears alongside a glimpse of what could’ve been. A lake filled with regrets and sorrow is what’s seen amidst a pool of bubbly eyes. Now they have to give up their true identity and hide in their façade in order to make it to society’s standard.
In the recent past, society’s standard had been a roller coaster too extreme that people had to sacrifice their own identity in order to fit in their standards. However, love will find a way to bring back what’s lost. Through love, people are able to find their selves once again by reconciling with the one who can save them, their knight and shining armor with chivalry that summons them all.

Life is rarely a smooth ride, and for Glyka Mae M. Guinanas, the path to becoming a working student wasn’t easy. What Started as a small family business and a comfortable life slowly turned into series of unexpected challenges.
Despite these hurdles, Glyka found the strength to keep going, motivated by personal goals, the pain of family struggles, and the support of people who cared. This is the story of a student who not only balanced the pressures of school and work but also navigated personal hardships to create a
an electronic technician. Life was good,” Glyka recalls. However, things took a turn when the store began making losses, and their mother decided to go abroad to search for better opportunities.
To finance her mother’s trip, Glyka’s parents borrowed money from creditors, but the strain of keeping up with debt caused them to lose the store. While Glyka’s mother went to Manila to process her papers, Glyka decided to transfer from MSLu to LVHS, a more affordable school. At this point, Glykawasn’t yet a working student
a Dominican Sister who was looking for a working student.
For Glyka, the decision to continue studying and working wasn’t just about survival, it was about reaching a higher goal and proving herself that she can do more. “Honestly, what motivated me to keep going was my desire to achieve my goals in life, despite the difficult circumstances,” says Glyka. “But what also drove me was the harsh criticism, especially from my father. I wanted to prove that I could do more than what others expected of me.” The words of those
While balancing schoolwork and a job was tough, Glyka found ways to manage. “For assignments, I usually do them late at night because that’s when I’m free. But I’m lucky that my classmates and teachers understand my situation.”
However, the biggest challenge for Glyka wasn’t juggling school and work, it was dealing with the painful separation of her parents. “My parents separated recently because of personal issues, and that hit me hard. I didn’t want to go to school, I didn’t want to eat, or even leave my room. It was hard to process everything, and the worst part was realizing that a question I had once heard as a joke, “Pag mag bulag imong papa og mama asaka mo uban?”, was actually becoming true,” Glyka shares.
The emotional pain led her to a dark place, even considering suicide. But during this time, a group of “angels” appeared to help. “The Dominican Sisters, the administrators and staff of MSLu, my fellow working students, and especially Sr. Daisy Donado, were there for me. They helped me through their presence, words of wisdom, and love,” Glyka said. Sr. Daisy was especially supportive, always checking in to make sure she was okay and reminding her that she was loved, valued, and important. These words became a lifeline.
“They made me
realize that I am loved, I am valued, and I am appreciated. These simple words helped me get through the hardest times, and I felt like I wasn’t as neglected as I thought I was by my own family.”
Through all the difficulties, Glyka gained valuable life lessons.
“One of the skills I learned was how to properly skirt tables for school events,” she said. “But more than the technical skills, I learned that you have to make your life meaningful despite the challenges you face. Those challenges will shape you into a stronger person.”

For Glyka, being a working student has been about more than just balancing school and work,it’s been about learning resilience, perseverance, and the power of support. “The most important lesson I’ve learned is that no matter how tough life gets, you can still keep moving forward. The challenges I’ve faced made me stronger and more determined to achieve my goals.”
Despite all the challenges she faced family struggles, emotional pain, and the difficulty of balancing school and work, she kept going. With the support of caring teachers, friends, especially the Dominican Sisters proved that nothing is impossible to overcome. Against all odds, Glyka turned her struggles into motivation and kept pushing forward. Her story is a powerful reminder that with faith and hope, we can face even the hardest times and come out stronger.

ordinary. Growing up under her aunt’s care— whom she fondly calls “Mommy”—Stiffany faced challenges that shaped her into the person she is today.
Her parents worked far from home, and while they provided financial support, Stiffany’s emotional anchor was her Mommy. “She was all I had, and everything I did was for her,” Stiffany said. Their family was no stranger to struggle. Often judged by relatives, they were seen as the underdogs. However, Stiffany’s Mommy never let the opinions of others define them. Her resilience inspired Stiffany to keep going, even when life became too heavy and tough.
To help ease the burden, Stiffany became a working student during high school and college. She juggled jobs and studies, trying her best not to ask for more than what her parents could give. Determined to make a difference, she clung to the idea that graduating with Latin honors could be her family’s proof of success. She carefully calculated her grades, aiming for a high distinction. But despite her best efforts, she fell short. “That was my only shot at proving I could be more,” she admitted. “Losing that chance broke me.”
Her determination faltered again when she failed her Civil Service Exam while her cousin passed. The disappointment lingered, but she kept moving forward.
In her third year of college, the pandemic struck, bringing more heartache. Her Mommy was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer, and the family knew time was running out. Despite the weight of her worries, Stiffany managed to graduate last June 29, 2024.
A week later, tragedy struck. While on a quick errand to retrieve
her credentials in Mati City and to buy ‘pasalubong’ for her Mommy, Stiffany returned home to find out that her mom had passed away. “I wanted her to see my graduation photo,” she said, her voice breaking. “If only I had been a minute earlier.” She had no time to grieve.
Just two days after her Mommy’s burial, Stiffany began her first job at Maryknoll School of Lupon. “I buried my emotions because there wasn’t space for them. Until now, I haven’t fully let myself feel it,” she admitted. Until now, Stiffany has not taken the board exam. She said that fear of failing again continues to haunt her. “It’s not that I don’t want to try, but the thought of disappointing myself and those who believe in me holds me back,” she admitted. For now, she focuses on the work and responsibilities at hand, waiting for the moment when she feels ready to face that challenge.
Passing by the now-empty house that once rang with laughter, she feels the weight of silence. Her story isn’t one of grand victories but of small, quiet fights. Fights to keep going, to stay strong, and to honor the woman who believed in her, even on times when others didn’t.

What would you do if you were out for a ride and suddenly found yourself in the middle of a fire emergency?
For one student medic, this was a big test of their training and a moment that changed how they view real-life emergency situations.
Joseph Sebastian Dagmang, a student medic from Maryknoll School of Lupon Inc., was just having a normal day when a fire broke out nearby. What started as a simple motorcycle ride quickly turned into an important chance to put their skills to use, help others, and learn what it’s really like to respond to a fire and provide first aid. Here’s their story. It all started when Basti was out riding their motorcycle and saw a fire. Their first thought was about their instructor, Sir Noe, who lived near the area.
“When I saw the fire, the first thing I thought about was Sir Noe because he lives close to it. I messaged our group chat to check if he was okay,” Basti recalls. After confirming that Sir Noe was safe, Basti learned that the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the Medical Disaster Rescue Response and Management Organization (MDRRMO) had arrived. But more medical help was still needed. That’s when Sir Balaga, another instructor, asked Basti if they could bring more medics. “Sir Balaga came to me and asked if I was trained. He said, ‘Can you bring any available medics to help?’” said Basti.
As a student medic, Basti was overwhelmed at first. The area was full of panicked people, the heat from the fire was intense, and everything seemed chaotic. This was Basti’s first time responding to a live fire emergency, and it was a lot to handle. “For me, as a first-timer, it was really hard. People were panicking, and it was so hot. It was hard to move, and harder to help because people wouldn’t listen and kept getting too close to the fire,” he explains. While the firemen worked on putting out the flames, Basti and a fellow

In the dimly lit halls of Maryknoll School of Lupon Inc., where laughter and learning once filled the air, something strange seems to linger. Beneath the daily routine of classes, stories of the paranormal capture the attention of students and teachers alike. From shadows darting across classroom walls to strange sounds echoing in empty corridors, the school is full of eerie encounters.
As we explore these mysteries, we dive into the spooky tales that have turned this place of learning into a site of the supernatural, inviting us to discover the thin line between the living and the ghostly.
The ICT lab stands as a hub of technology and learning, but beneath its modern exterior lies a history filled with mystery and ghostly tales. Students often speak of an “engkanto” that is believed to live and guard the ICT lab. Some students say that they see the “engkanto” in the night.
As we dive into this haunting event, we also hear chilling stories from the girls’ restroom nearby, known for its strange occurrences. Rumors spread about a white lady seen by several students, vanishing the moment they looked. Some say
they’ve heard whispers coming from the last cubicle, soft sobs, and laughter echoing in empty spaces.
One unsettling story from the ICT lab was when a group of students were about to go home and saw a lady dressed in white walking back and forth in the halls of the ICT lab. These students were frozen on their spots, not knowing what to do and say, they ran with great fear. After these encounters, the ICT lab is believed to be guarded by an “engkanto”, and it is said that every student who will enter the ICT lab alone must respect and greet the “engkanto” by saying “tabi-tabi po”.
We also heard stories about the cold spots in the restroom, where the air feels oddly chilly, and mirrors fogging up even when no one is there. These strange details create a feeling of suspense, turning the restroom into a place of both fear and curiosity for those daring enough to go inside. What really happened all those years ago?
The truth is still a mystery, leaving students to wonder if they might meet the ghost of the white lady who never left.
As the last echoes of footsteps faded from the hallways, the mysteries surrounding the school
student medic, Belbelone, were responsible for managing the crowd. They told people to move away from the trucks and fire hoses and tried to clear the area for emergency responders to avoid accidents. “I told the others, ‘Control the crowd. Move people away from the trucks and water hoses. Don’t let anyone get too close,’ he said, remembering how chaotic things were.
Even with the chaos around them, the student medics worked well together. Everyone did their best to help, and Bastiis proud of what they accomplished as a team. “I’m really thankful for my team, they did their best. I’m proud of what we were able to do. We learned so much from the experience. We were able to help, and we learned a lot about ourselves too,” Basti said. Working with the fire responders, the students were able to keep people away from danger. Basti also felt proud to represent their school, as the team was recognized by the BFP and MDRRMO for their efforts.
When asked what was the hardest part of the experience, Basti shared that dealing with the crowd, the heat, and the noise made things really tough. The sound of the water hoses, the confusion, and the pressure to act quickly made it hard to think clearly. “The hardest part was the noise and the confusion. It’s not easy in a fire, and it’s not easy to help because you have to think quickly. But with so many people shouting, the heat, and the sound of the water hoses, it was difficult,” said Basti. Even with these challenges, the student medics kept going. They helped move people to safety, provided care for the injured, and did everything they could to assist.
This experience taught him and their team a lot about responding to emergencies,
lingered like a whisper in the night. Students and teachers alike shared their eerie encounters like ghostly figures appearing in the corner of their eyes, and the chilling sensation of being watched. Each story added another layer to the school’s rich tapestry of history, where the past intertwines with the present. These eerie experiences serve as reminders of the lives once lived within these walls, encouraging us to embrace the unknown. In the end, Maryknoll School of Lupon Inc’s paranormal activity invites curiosity, urging us to explore not just the lessons, but also the mysterious shadows that dance just beyond the light. As we continue to uncover these stories, we realize that some mysteries are best left unsolved, enriching our school experience in ways we never could have imagined.
me a lot about being a medic in a real emergency,” Basti reflects.
The students were also praised by their school, and he feels that this real-life experience will help them in their future career as a healthcare professional. Being a student medic is not just about studying from books or passing exams, it’s about being ready to step up when there’s an emergency. For Basti, this fire was a big test of their training, their ability to stay calm under pressure, and their willingness to help others.
The lessons they learned and the people they helped gave them a better understanding of what it truly means to answer the call of duty, a responsibility that goes beyond any classroom and into the heart of realworld service.

They’ve arrived in the Land of the Rising Sun, but something’s… off. Who are they, and what secrets are they carrying?
Ms. Princis Dian Tabañag, a former Grade 7 adviser for the school year 2023-2024 at Maryknoll School of Lupon Inc., filled with dreams and aspirations to explore the wonders of the world, has just landed on the flat grasslands of Japan. She was beloved by many, causing a river of tears to flood the classroom when she revealed a secret she had kept from her students—that she would be crossing the seas to achieve her dreams. Though saying “I am moving to Japan” may seem simple, Ms. Princis has a deeper story that has yet to be told.
“My motivation to move to Japan was driven by a desire for personal growth, cultural immersion, and a chance to make a meaningful impact on my students’ lives,” she said. Out of all the reasons to be motivated, she chose to think of herself and her students in this hard but exhilarating situation. That’s how
much she loves the Maryknollers, just as we love her. Moreover, studies show that social support significantly impacts mental health and well-being. When people move abroad, they often lose the immediate availability of their support system, which can make them feel more vulnerable and isolated. This is what Ms. Princis felt: “The thought of saying goodbye to loved ones was heartwrenching. I grappled with feelings of homesickness and uncertainty.”
In her reflections, Ms. Princis found herself thinking of her fellow teachers back here at Maryknoll, especially those who might one day find themselves at a crossroads similar to hers. She then shared a piece of advice: “Do your homework, be prepared, and reflect on your motivation.” With these words, Ms. Princis hoped to inspire other educators to see their profession as a journey—one that can take them to places they never imagined.
The majority of us find it hard to adapt to a foreign realm, but not for her. While there are differences,
like technological advancements, Ms. Princis found it relatively smooth due to the commonalities between here and Japan. When it comes to culture, the shared values, like respect and community, make it easy to blend in, making adaptation more comfortable.
To those who watched Ms. Princis depart, her story remains a beacon of hope and a reminder that our dreams, no matter how scary they seem, are worth pursuing. In Japan, she has not only found a new purpose but also a deeper understanding of herself—an experience she will carry with her, always, no matter where the road leads next. So, let’s clap our hands for her.

Like all other Catholic Schools, MSLu has always valued the custom of honoring each section’s patron saint feast day. This gave the students a chance to take a break, enjoy the events, and celebrate their section’s saint. It is worth noting that this practice has even excused students from the daily flag ceremony on their feast day, which is so that they can have ample time to get ready for the occasion. At present, however, with the newly instituted administration taking over the school, the students are overhauling their ways so as to cope with the newly set rules, which is the opposite of the practices they have known all these years.
off guard, the students exchanged puzzled looks, questioning the sudden change in practice. For years, it had been customary to excuse students from the flag ceremony on their feast day.
After the ceremony, anxiety quickly spread among the students as they grappled with what to do next. Food was already being prepared, decorations carefully arranged, and both time and money invested into the celebration—canceling it now would be so disheartening. Slowly, more members of the section arrived, hopeful that their numbers might make a difference. Unsure of their

With teary eyes, trembling knees, heavy breaths, and pounding hearts, they mustered the courage to knock on the school directress’s door. Hopeful and anxious, they believed this was their chance to make a difference. The office felt freezing, yet beads of sweat rolled down their faces, a blend of nerves and frustration mixed with endless
On October 25, two sections— St. Simon the Zealot and St. Jude the Apostle—were set to celebrate their saints’ feast days a few days ahead of the official date, October 28. During the morning flag ceremony, however, only ten students from St. Simon attended, with just three representatives from St. Jude present. Then, they were told, in front of the whole school, in front of all the students present, “Forfeit ang feast day sa St. Jude kay wala sila nag attend sang flag ceremony” (St. Jude’s feast day is forfeited because they didn’t attend the flag ceremony). Across the present day, there are people who are suffering caused by the unsanitary conditions. More of these are from residential areas, water bodies, dumping sites, and industrial zones.
Various viruses, but one of the most severe viruses that can be faced is the dengue virus.
Dengue is an illness caused by being bitten by a mosquito infected with one of four types of dengue virus (DENV). This virus is mostly found in tropical and subtropical areas in Central and South America, parts of Asia, and the Pacific Islands.
Warm temperatures and rainfall create dial breeding conditions for mosquitoes in places like open water containers, old tires, and other objects that hold water. These mosquitoes are infected with the dengue virus; it can transfer to humans through bites.
Most people are experiencing headaches, nausea, rash, vomiting, swollen glands, a high fever of 104 F (40 C), and muscle or joint pain. Symptoms get worse and become life-threatening to others.
As of October 4, 2024, a total of 269, 467 are in dengue cases, 25, 986 cases last September 1–14, 2024, and 32, 649 from August 18–31, 2024.
From the data, 2, 856 had intense infection, over 700 deaths,
Artificial intelligence(AI) has rapidly entered the education world, offering tools that help with everything from grading to personalized tutoring. While many educators welcome these advancements, others worry that relying too much on AI could reduce students’ ability to think independently and solve problems on their own.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in schools worldwide, promising to make learning more engaging and efficient. From personalized lessons to instant feedback on assignments, AI tools aim to support both teachers and students by providing new ways to learn and assess. The AI in education market is projected to reach billions of dollars by 2025, according to HolonIQ.
Many teachers appreciate AI’s potential to save time by automating repetitive tasks like grading. Some AI tools can also
challenging more advanced students. A study from the Journal of Educational Technology shows that using AI can increase student engagement and even improve performance in certain subjects.
However, educators and experts warn that too much reliance on AI could have downsides. When students depend on AI for answers, they may miss the chance to develop important skills like critical thinking and creativity. A Common Sense Media survey found that over half of students using AI for homework felt it discouraged them from thinking deeply about the material.
Privacy is another concern. Some AI systems collect large amounts of data about students, including their progress, learning styles, and even emotions. This information can be helpful but also raises questions about who owns and protects the data. A report from the Electronic Frontier
In present time, vaping has been recognized as a normal activity among teens. Its addictive flavor and soothing effect will make you crave for more. With its countless variations customed for the preferences of today’s youth, this device invites more and more people towards addiction.
It is a common sight to see teens puffing out smoke from these devices as they are commonly believed to be healthier compared to actual cigarettes. Various research studies regarding its health implications show that vapes have less harmful effects compared to that of cigarettes
Vaporizers, commonly known as vapes, are devices that simulate tobacco smoking. It consists of an atomizer, a power source such as a battery, and a container such as a cartridge or tank. Instead of smoke, the user inhales vapor. As such, using an e-cigarette is often called “vaping”.
This activity is often observed in today’s youth, particularly among high school students. Utilizing the feel-good effects of vaping while
with a case fatality rate of 0.26%. DOH added that there might be changes in statistics owed by a late report. According to DOH, the importance of preventing dengue comes with the 4S strategy: search and destroy mosquito breeding grounds by eliminating stagnant water and its containers; selfprotection measures such as using insect repellents and wearing long-sleeved clothing; seek early consultation when experiencing symptoms such as fever, headache, body pain, or skin rashes. Support fogging or spraying in local hotspot areas where dengue cases are on the rise. At this time, having this infection can cause a lot of people to suffer; others do die just because of this. Despite severe dengue infection, we will do our utmost to preserve and conserve our health and vicinity. Neglecting our environment is like you’re neglecting yourself.

education. Relying too heavily on technology risks turning students into passive learners, which goes against the purpose of true education,” said Dr. Linda Brown, an education policy expert.
Schools need to find a balance between using AI for efficiency and ensuring students still have opportunities to learn independently. AI can be a great tool when used to support, not replace, teachers. Educators suggest using AI in moderation, particularly in subjects where critical thinking is essential, like history or literature.
To address over-reliance on AI, schools should implement guidelines that limit its use in areas where independent thought is important. Training teachers to use AI responsibly and educating students on how to use these tools as support rather than a shortcut can also help. By finding a healthy balance, schools can embrace technology without
ignoring the various health risks caused by this very activity. Letting the flavor take over their mind and putting their complete health at tight situations.
In some situations, these students bring their vapes to school. They huff and puff whenever and wherever they can just to satisfy their immense craving. Aside from their cravings, the students just can’t seem to have enough of the “soothing” effect that vapes have.
Just like smoking, vaping can cause addiction. Vapes contain nicotine, an addictive substance that is both found in tobacco and the liquid in vapes. Nicotine addiction (also known as nicotine dependence) can develop quickly.
Vaping addiction has many symptoms such as feeling irritable, feeling hungry, and of course having a strong craving towards e-cigarettes. This is when eating disorders come in. With your body being used to the artificial flavor of the vape, you no longer feel the need to eat actual food. Thus, forcing you to skip meals and have an abnormal diet.
When your body receives nicotine, receptors in the brain release a feel-good chemical called dopamine. This is what makes vaping so addicting, since it triggers the brain to let you inhale more of those flavorful fumes that make you feel good.
Aside from addiction and lung diseases, vapes also have a negative impact towards your mental health. The constant use of this device can have various psychological effects that could harm one’s mental health. These psychological effects include insomnia, mood swings, eating disorders, and even depression.
To conclude, vaping presents a significant challenge among individuals, particularly among the youth. Ignoring the various health risks that e-cigarettes impose towards them just to experience the sensation they crave. It is important to be responsible with one’s vices in order to avoid health risks and live a clean life with cleaner lungs. Flavorful fumes, poison in disguise.

We all enjoy nice, hot, and steamy food prepared on the streets by our favorite vendors. The warm fish balls that cost 1 peso, or the refreshing juice that’s poured in a plastic bag with a straw. It’s all so irresistible, especially after a long day at school. Based on a recently conducted survey at Maryknoll School of Lupon Inc., out of 100, 52.6% of students often eat street food outside of school.
Microplastics are small pieces of plastics that are less than 5mm in size which occur in the environment as a result of plastic pollution. Such materials have a low biodegradation rate and, thus, mostly remain in the environment and adversely affect the human body, the final consumer in the food chain.
They can come from a variety of sources including larger plastic pieces that have been broken apart, resin pellets used for plastic manufacturing, synthetic textiles, and so much more. The continuous production of these microplastics contribute greatly towards micropollution.
human cells, decrease reproductive health, and disrupt the endocrine system. They also act as a vessel for harmful substances to enter the body as they can absorb chemicals linked to cancers and weakened immune systems
The threat of microplastics is often overlooked and unnoticed.
People think that it’s harmless since I’s barely visible, but letting yourself consume a not-so-healthy amount of microplastics could cause serious health complications.
A study in South Korea tells us that in vitro experiments with human cells and in vivo data generated with mice showed that microplastics elicit adverse health effects mainly by causing inflammation, oxidative stress [increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production], lipid metabolism disturbances, gut microbiota dysbiosis, and neurotoxicity
These microscopic particles often make their way into our food, and of course, into our body. If proper meal preparation is not observed, the chances of contaminating your food with microplastics are high.
Studies show that a person can drink or breathe between 78,000 to 210,000 microplastic particles per year. Often times, we get these particles in our body from poorly prepared street food. Probably due to low quality equipment, or poorly prepared ingredients. Upon ingesting these tiny plastic particles, you are exposed to various risks. Researchers have found that microplastics damage
A common health risk from ingesting microplastics is having respiratory problems. Inhaling them can cause oxidative stress in the airways and lungs, leading to respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, and shortness of breath due to inflammation and damage, as well as fatigue and dizziness.
As research continues to uncover the extent of microplastic contamination, it becomes increasingly clear that addressing this issue requires a multifaceted approach. Raising public awareness about the sources and impacts of microplastics can empower consumers to make informed choices, while further studies will help clarify the long-term implications for human health.
The supply of electricity in Davao Oriental is severely affected as the municipality faces challenges brought about by the unstable electric supply. This severely affects both the financial and operating lives of the people involved. Fluctuation has caused heavy electricity bills due to interruption, which put heavy weights on the pocket of households, businesses, and schools. As for Maryknoll School of Lupon, this school faces unique difficulties resulting from this unstable supply of electricity, affecting both the teaching and learning environments of Maryknoll School of Lupon.
THE CHALLENGE OF UNSTABLE POWER SUPPLY. The power supply in Lupon has become unstable. Davao Oriental faces challenges with electricity stability due to multiple factors. First, the Davao Oriental Electric Cooperative (DORECO) depends on power from suppliers like Therma South Incorporated and the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). Scheduled maintenance by these suppliers can disrupt the supply, leading to power interruptions that are beyond DORECO’s direct control. Furthermore, the province experiences unscheduled interruptions due to weather conditions, such as typhoons and thunderstorms, which can damage power lines, transformers, and substations. Additional issues like tree overgrowth and accidents involving power poles also contribute to outages, as these require immediate repair work to restore electricity.
IMPACT ON MSLu. This is a prime school, providing education in unstable electricity supply within the community. Various institutions of learning and their administrations have distinct needs that can be provided for
Implementing ID tapping stations in schools in the Philippines, whereby parents and guardians are intimated if the child gains access to the campus, was appreciated by many as one more security feature that gives them peace of mind. Nonetheless, worries have been raised whether the said technology crosses the boundary between students’ private, independent lives.
There are many schools in the Philippines where ID tapping stations are employed to automate attendance tracking. The students tap their ID cards at the station, and their parents will be informed by text messages of their child’s arrival. This system would improve security and provide updates on time for families and, at the same time, accurate attendance records for the schools.
Many parents in the Philippines appreciate this technology because they know that their children safely reached school. In fact, a recent survey done by Philippine EdTech News revealed that over 70% of the respondents reported getting peace of mind and keeping themselves closer to their children’s school day with these notifications.
Although this has its benefits, the tapping stations record location data daily. The National Privacy Commission of the Philippines
issued reminders to schools to take the responsibility of ensuring these collected data were stored with appropriate safety measures and used accordingly to avoid improper handling risks for exposure of students to breaching their privacy or actual breach themselves.
Some teachers feel that if students are informed of the activities that each one is involved with, they become dependent on the teachers. If everything about their activities is reported to them, they feel overcontrolled and doubt their ability to make independent decisions. Overcontrolling reduces trust and self-reliance in teenagers.
While ID tapping stations inform parents, these have to be responsible tools for respecting students’ privacy and independence, says Dr. Maria Reyes, Philippine expert in educational technology. “Schools should balance safety with a supportive learning environment.”.
by: RETHBESNAR
The Philippine schools should ensure that the collection and storage of student data will have clear guidelines, and all these should be with privacy protection policies. This could be through limiting access to only authorized personnel and storing them safely. The schools are also required to educate the parents and students on the types of information collected, including the reasons for their collection.
Balancing safety with privacy, Philippine schools can allow parents to opt in or out of receiving notifications. Data security audits can be done regularly to ensure that the information about the students is properly protected. Creating clear guidelines and respecting family choices, schools can make use of technology while protecting the rights of students to privacy and independence.
The administration of Maryknoll School of Lupon installs solar lights throughout the campus, emphasizing sustainability and reducing environmental impact for a greener tomorrow.
Solar lights were recently installed across the campus of Maryknoll School of Lupon, Inc., marking a significant step forward in upholding one of its core institutional values: a commitment to being ‘environmentfriendly.’
The importance of solar lights for the institution extends beyond simple illumination. Solar lighting use renewable energy, which helps the school reduce its carbon footprint and support environmental sustainability. By relying less on traditional electricity, these lights can save money over time. Solar lights also improve safety on campus, keeping important areas well-lit for students, staff, and visitors. They are reliable during power outages and require little maintenance.
This initiative is highly beneficial for the school, as most events now extend into the evening. The newly installed solar lights provide much-needed illumination in a sustainable way, enhancing
sufficiently by the stability of the power provision. School computers, projectors, among other digital aids to learning, need this stable electric supply to take effect in class. Power oscillations in electricity could affect the minds of both pupils and the teacher as well in teaching. Further, dysfunctional equipment and costly services limit what the school has available to pay for elsewhere to support or enhance buildings and programs and learning materials and resources.
For Maryknoll, unstable electricity also affects services beyond the classroom. Its administrative processes, digital record-keeping, and communication with parents are all compromised when power goes out. All these put additional pressure on the school’s management to find ways to protect equipment from potential damage and secure backup options for power-all of which require additional funding and logistical planning.
A CALL FOR SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS. This is one area where electricity in Lupon requires a better means of sustainable energy
stabilizers or sources of renewable energy such as solar power, can further reduce financial costs or operational losses due to electrical instability. This can minimize costs and increase the consistency of supply for home usage, businesses, or academic institutions. For Maryknoll School, alternative sources of power may mean the difference between budget stability and disruptions, and a better overall learning environment for students. To address these issues, Davao Oriental has been exploring renewable energy solutions. In 2023, the provincial government initiated a solar power project in partnership with Dy Green Energy, aiming to provide a more stable and affordable electricity source to the province. The project is expected to reduce the dependency on external suppliers and encourage economic development by stabilizing power, particularly beneficial for attracting investments
Eventually, in Lupon, its electrical challenges would be solved and thus sustain the daily life of the residents and other institutions

safety and visibility across campus.
Furthermore, this implementation is not only convenient for school events but also greatly benefits the school’s student-athletes, whose training sessions often extend into the early evening. The solar lights ensure they have a well-lit, safe environment to practice, supporting both their performance and safety.
Moreover, owing to the recent Diocese of Mati Catholic Schools Athletic Meet (DMACSAM) where the athletes remained on the premises for five continuous days, the solar lights came in handy. Athletes were able to move around the grounds at night because of the night lights that were installed, making the competition more enjoyable and comfortable for everyone involved.
The installation of solar lights in our institution is one of the ways to establish sustainability. This initiative not only improves safety and accessibility on campus but also shows the school’s commitment to using safe resources and reducing its impact on the environment.
Maryknoll School of Lupon recently upgraded its library by installing new computers equipped with high-speed internet and educational software. This development is a significant step toward enhancing students’ access to technology and improving their overall learning experience.
The provision of new computers gives students access to resources that many may not use at home, thus equal chances of learning and research. These tools will be used to access online materials, complete assignments in a very efficient way, and search through various educational platforms to increase knowledge as well as skills.
The library’s computer area has quickly become a center for collaborative activities. Students can now work together on group projects, access digital tools for presentations, and share ideas effectively. This collaborative environment promotes teamwork and critical thinking, essential skills for both academics and future careers.
Teachers have already observed improvements in students’ academic performance since the computers were installed. With access to research databases and interactive learning platforms, students can dig deeper into their subjects. These resources make learning more engaging and
accessible, helping students stay motivated and perform better in their studies.
The introduction of computers into the library has equipped students with the basic skills needed for survival in the 21st century. They are learning to operate productivity software and access online resources as they prepare themselves for the challenges of higher education and the modern workforce.
The new computers have been warmly welcomed by students, teachers, and parents alike. A student was heard saying, “The new computers have made a big difference, I can now complete my research more easily and learn about topics that interest me.”
Installation of these computers signifies a great investment in the future of Maryknoll School of Lupon. The school will be equipping its students to succeed in the increasingly digital world by incorporating modern technology in the library, thus laying the foundation for the future.

The town of Lupon in Davao Oriental has long experienced the seasonal weather patterns characteristic of the Philippines. However, with the effects of climate change growing more pronounced, Lupon’s weather has become increasingly erratic and extreme. There are now variations in rainfall, fewer spells of rainfall and increased intensity of typhoons which have different effects on the community more so, the students. Such changes inconvenience learners in many activities such as affecting the time they spend in class, their productivity and well being.
Recently, Typhoon Kristine blows into the Philippine Area of responsibility (PAR). Even though the storm did not directly affect the southern regions, the storm still brought weather changes with strong winds and heavy rains. The shift also highlights that the region is experiencing the effects of climate change, which has disrupted normal weather patterns, making residents understand that such storms have other effects even when they do not affect the community
A number of health effects arise from cross seasonal unstable weather, especially during prolonged rainy season in that they provide favorable environment for water borne diseases. There has also been a rise in instances of diseases such as dengue fever during these times due to increase in accumulation of water – usually a favosrite breeding ground for mosquitoes. Those who get infected with dengue lose several weeks of school which hampers their studies and puts their lives at risk. Moreover, the psychological effects of these health risks are significant. Students experience anxiety about their safety and the possibility of getting sick, which can distract them from their studies.
In addition to the physical health risks from waterborne diseases and flooding, students’ nutrition and overall health are also impacted by changing weather patterns. Inconsistent rainfall can lead to food insecurity, reducing food production for students. Malnutrition is a major concern, as hunger affects young learners’ health and their ability to concentrate in class, worsening their learning difficulties.
Schools also face challenges
occur. Flooding can damage school buildings, disrupt lessons, and lead to students missing school for extended periods. When storms make classrooms unusable, students may have to hold classes in tents, which can hinder their focus and learning. The unstable learning environment caused by weatherrelated disruptions, like flooded classrooms, adds to students’ stress.
In short, The climate crisis in Lupon, Davao Oriental, significantly affects students and the community. It is crucial to address health and education disruptions to help students build resilience against these challenges.
It is now high time for the residents of Lupon, particularly the local officials, and teachers to act. A fire recently broke out in the public market of Brgy. Poblacion, Lupon, Davao Oriental. The reason behind the fire was believed to be electrical-related. It spread to the nearby establishments and grew larger by the minute. The locals were unharmed and safe, but the establishments that caught fire were reduced to ash and debris.
Fire is a powerful force of nature that has both benefited and threatened humanity throughout history. Fires can ignite from various sources, and can spread wide rapidly. These ignitions can lead to devastating outcomes as it reduces everything in its path into ashes.
Fires pose a significant threat to life, property, and the environment. Seminars and programs have been put to action in order to inform people about fire safety. Whether in homes, workplaces, or natural settings, understanding fire safety is crucial for prevention and preparedness.
It can start unintentionally, often due to fire hazards that have been left unattended. In some cases, it can ignite intentionally, such as controlled burn fires to clear crops. Intentional or unintentional, this phenomenon can still pack a burning punch.
There have been 1,128 VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) fire alerts reported so far in 2024, considering high confidence alerts only. But these numbers are normal compared to the total of the previous years going back to 2012. The most fires recorded was in 2016 where there was a total of 1,927 fires.
Fires are a common yet destructive phenomenon that can have devastating consequences for both people and the environment. Not knowing how to prevent this disaster could bring those consequences closer to you. Understanding the causes of fire is essential for prevention and safety measure. The causes of fire can be classified into two (2) categories, Natural and Human-Induced. Most fire reports are from Human-Induced flames such as electrical malfunctions, open flames, or even arson. These factors along with the right conditions for a fire to ignite can turn a person’s life into a story.
Fires pose significant health risks that can affect individuals, communities, and even entire ecosystems. Being informed about these implications is crucial for a person’s recovery. The health impacts of fire can be categorized into
immediate and long-term effects, encompassing physical injuries, respiratory issues, and environmental health concerns.
But no matter how we look at it, there is always a bright side. Fires may have negative impact towards us, but it can also provide us with our essential benefits. We utilize fires in our day-today lives, from using it as heat source, a light source, and even an energy source. Although deadly, it still is crucial for us to go on with our everyday lives. Fire is a powerful force that has shaped human civilization and the natural world for centuries. While it provides essential benefits—such as warmth, cooking, and energy—it also poses significant risks. Understanding the science of fire, including its causes, behavior, and methods of control, is crucial for effective fire management and prevention. By working together, we can harness the benefits of fire while mitigating its dangers, ensuring a safer and more resilient future.
The more intelligent one becomes, the more the cage of captivity limits one’s freedom.
Vishwa Ma’ali, commonly known as Mali, was a female Asian Elephant who lived at Manila Zoo in Manila, Philippines. Mali was born in Sri Lanka and was gifted to First Lady Imelda Marcos by the Sri Lankan Government, and then lived in Manila Zoo from then on. After Shiva, the elephant whom Mali shared an enclosure with, passed away, Mali lived most of her life alone in captivity. This led to her being dubbed as the “World’s Saddest Elephant”. Mali was classified as a Sri Lankan subspecies of Asian Elephant, a species of elephant which can be located in tropical and subtropical areas of Asia. They have been observed to inhabit grasslands, floodplains, and deciduous (temperate) and scrub forests. These intimidating giants have been assessed for The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2019 and is enlisted as an endangered species. Asian elephants are believed to have a lifespan of up to 60-70 years in the wild, while some may go beyond the said life expectancy in captivity when taken proper care of. On the other hand, females in human care have a median life expectancy of about 47-48 years. Sadly, Mali the elephant was took away a little earlier and passed away due to various health issues at 43 years old in captivity on November 28, 2023. Her memory still lives on in the Manila Zoo as she returned as a preserved taxidermy by courtesy of PetEternity in Angat, Bulacan. She returned as a display in the zoo on December 16, 2024.
One of the reasons as to why these elephants tend to live below
their life expectancy and end up endangered are the various threats that we humans bring (e.g., Poaching, Habitat loss due to agriculture, land and urban development, Human warfare, and Human-Elephant conflict)
These elephants are not only huge, but are incredibly intelligent, portraying a unique set of behaviors that set them apart from the animals of today. Led by a matriarch, their herds are characterized by strong family bonds, sophisticated forms of communication and complex behavior. Asian elephants use tools and can feel grief and compassion.
The Asian Elephant can be classified as generalist herbivores. Their diet consists of a wide variety of trees, shrubs, climbing plants, herbs, and other plant types. They tend to prefer grasses but rely heavily on browse plants in some habitats, such as tropical wet forests. They eat many parts of plants, including leaves, stalks, bark, roots, fruits, and seeds. They also eat many cultivated crops, especially banana and plantain plants.
Elephants are intelligent creatures that are capable of expressing very unique and sophisticated behaviors that are often unobserved in other mammals. They roam the Earth as the biggest land mammals currently alive, but face serious threats from beings that are much smaller than them.
These giants deserve to be free and untouched by the evil hands of the rich and uneducated. Their unique capabilities should not be held back by the cruel cages of captivity as they are meant to live their lives free, and not as pieces of entertainment for human beings.

who happens to be a college student in Davao, would always go home every weekend and train John with much passion and little did they know, those weekend practices at the Municipal Gym of Banaybanay would spark something much greater than just a love for the game.
The brothers have a bond beyond basketball practice as the Dignos family long ago became known to love the game, and the torch was passed on to Christian and John who have united their forces in creating a legacy both for themselves and for the MSLu basketball team that Christian has been coaching since 2022 and with under his leadership, the MSLu team attained 1st runner-up at the DMACSAM 2024.
Playing for MSLu is not just about winning for John-it’s more about carrying on with his brother’s legacy and paying their family homage for instilling those values into him.
In this small town where basketball is more than a game, Dignos brothers, I’d say, are those that best epitomized that the spirit of the game between the bond of the coach and player is as good as brother to brother.
Their journey starts from Municipal Gym at Banaybanay going to the courts of MSLU, a concrete representation of hard work, family, and a shared dream of basketball greatness.
Driven by the eagerness to redeem their loss against the Crusaders during the elimination round, the Greyhounds shocked the Crusaders during the championship game by sweeping game one and game two.
Equipped with motivation and redemption, together with the loud cheers and yells of the crowd, the Greyhounds whole heartedly gave all of their might to take down the Crusaders, dominating the first game with powerful spikes and unbreakable blocks, forcing the series into a game two, 25-23, 25-22.
With the Greyhounds playing their fourth game of the day, it became a mental and physical challenge for the team, testing their endurance and perseverance.
As the second game commenced, the Crusaders took an early lead in the first set, forcing the Greyhounds to call for a timeout and regroup, but an unbelievable
In terms of barriers, every achievement’s background will always go through the essence of obstacles and challenges. Psalm also encountered the basic problem of every contestants which is the title of being a beginner. He never experience sports dancing in his past, therefore he still struggles to learn thoroughly and he also admits that he still have a handful to learn about and still needs to lay time and effort to practice for the perfection of his outcome. While he is aware that he doesn’t have any experience in regards with the field he entered, he is honest about being nervous and afraid while performing like any other first timer would feel. Despite of every prickle he encountered, it never stopped him to continue dancing and shining like a twirling star.
Dancing plays a very special role when it comes to talent, entertainment and cultural tapestry within the nation. It contributes to the traditional aspects and heritage of the country, it pours colors and vibrancy that shimmers all throughout the shifting globe. Lighting the atmosphere with the essence of movements and ability are the main purpose of channeling people’s talent in dancing.
moment happened, as one of the key players of the Greyhounds, Karl Jassen Quiñones, ended the Crusaders’ four to zero run with a smart attack, eventually giving them the momentum and ending the set, 25-22.
Filled with enthusiasm and drive to win, the Blazing Greyhounds started the second set with five straight points, dismantling the core of the Blue Crusaders, along with unblockable spikes and lethal serves, which became an easy win for the Greyhounds, finishing the championship game, 25-23.

until they were as smooth as the graceful pirouettes of a seasoned gymnast, and every time he bent, flipped, or twisted, he got closer to mastering his craft.

“Teamwork makes the dream work” they said. Well, that saying did come into reality.
The air crackled with an energy that seems tense. “MSLU, serve!” the ball flew on the opposite court. Every set, spike, dig, and block, sweat was glistening on their weary faces. A set of drums were heard at the sidelines, those faces seem familiar. Wait, it’s Don Bosco supporting the volleyball male Greyhounds, what are they doing here?
The greyhounds’ eyes widened with surprise as their rival school, the Gray Wolves, howled loudly in supporting them in a match against Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy (IHMA). Faces who used to look at them with a fierce, competitive look now glances at them like an old friend in the 90s. Triple and Bass drums echoed the Gymnasium every time the volleyball hits the out-of-bounds area leading to victorious smiles and fists.
The officials tasting their whistle keep scolding the wolves and greyhounds who were cheering to
the next level. The drums and yells were so out of the universe that the game paused for a second to settle everything down. Don Bosco and Maryknoll School of Lupon didn’t seem to care; they still keep on having a showdown with the IHMA crowd, tumbling here and there and just overall goofing around. Such a catholic school behavior.
At last, the ball contacted the ground, the MSLU volleyball boys’ team screamed in victory and a smile painted their faces. Don Bosco hurriedly high-fived them and congratulated their clear road to DADITAMA. Two schools who were once rivals, sparked into something more meaningful like a friendship that was meant to be.
Even though the DMACSAM is full of catholic schools that are intertwined to compete, it is still amazing how two schools who barely met each other still manage to ally amidst the hectic atmosphere. That is true sportsmanship and teamwork, the authentic formula to success.
eldersHistory repeated itself as the Grade 11 team, for the second year running, lost to the same batch of students who then were in Grade 7 last school year. The woes of the seniors continued, having not broken the curse of being twice defeated by their junior counterparts. With all the physical advantage they should have, the seniors could not outplay the younger, agile team. The Grade 8 Spiker won with much fanfare because they were relatively short in stature and younger. Yet, their small height concealed the huge talent and cooperation among them as they seemed to work in perfect harmony in outsmarting and out spiking their opponents. The crowd was shocked by the grade 8 performance and the Grade 8 students kept cheering to their volleyball players.
On the other hand, the Grade 11 team seemed to be having a mental block. They seemed to be unable to get into coordination in the game. Despite their physical strength and maturity, they did not take advantage of their strong points and yielded to unforced errors and miscommunications.
Their normally powerful spikes and blocks were deflated by the juniors’ smart positioning. This
victory of the Grade 8 team reflected dedication, hard work, and teamwork. The strategy laid down by the coach helped them focus well and exploit the seniors’ weaknesses and maximize their strengths. With the crowd cheering and chanting their name, the junior squad celebrated its well-deserved triumph.
Defeat is the best humbling to a team like Grade 11. These individuals will feel more pressure now to get together once again, think harder on what needs to be overcome and really learn and know that to defeat some strong mental obstacles. And then there’s the Grade 8 who feels quite ecstatic basking in their awesome victory in upsetting, boosting in their morale ahead of an important battle next. Indeed, this is just what took place in this exciting volleyball game between Grade 8 and Grade 11 students from the Maryknoll School of Lupon. After all, in playing volleyball, skills, solidarity, and determination could just prove a surefire defense against strength and brawn. For the school community, the triumph would constitute one of the most resounding upset victories in school intramural history-the kind of achievement that challenges succeeding studentathletes to take the challenge further.

During a hot and sunny day, the Blazing Greyhounds from Maryknoll School of Lupon Incorporated relentlessly crushed the Gray Wolves of the Don Bosco Training Center of Mati, with an astonishing 26-0 championship game, during the Diocese of Mati Catholic Schools Athletic Meet Football Championships at the Lupon Oval on October 9, 2024.
It was an easy game for the Greyhounds as their team captain, Tristan Tabenas, made an impressive 10 goals, 9 assists, and 7 defensive blocks, ensuring him his Most Valuable Player (MVP) title.

With the momentum gained from the first half, the Greyhounds plotted an aggressive play, paving the way for Tabenas to score three points in a row.
As the final five minutes of the second half set forth, King Carl Oga, the team’s vice captain, shookt the Wolves with a sneaky head strike, made by an incredible pass by their playmaker and captain, Tabenas, ending the game with a sweet sweep, 26-0.

sure all her equipment is in perfect condition. She carefully checks her bow and arrows, making small adjustments to ensure everything is ready. “I test everything during practice to make sure it’s right,” she says, knowing that the smallest details can make a big difference.

She will do her best to bring home the bacon and make the Maryknoll community proud.

Life is like a game of tennis; it’s a battle between formidable mental forces done in a wide array of opportunities and missed chances. This is where we truly find ourselves, as we portray the athletes in the game while life’s problems become the cruelest opponent in sight. The passion to maneuver life lies in what step you take on the baseline, whether you’ll have the courage to take the 2 steps forward or be a coward at deuce and take a 3 step backwards, so now let me take you on a journey of a young lad flourished with bravery who paved his way onto life’s court with a smile.
Dexter Anthony V. Salcedo, a young knight in shining armor who clashed with his opponents in the Davao Regional Athletic Association 2023. He remained victorious and won. Being a young lad opposing previous winners in a duel to determine which division will be hailed the winner was a teeth-gritting clash between the superiors. But, amidst the tremors hovering inside his mind, the urge to bring pride to his school became his very strength to continue and be crowned as the Davao Regional Athletic Association 2023 lawn tennis singles A champion.
After a hectic exchange of cross courts and drop shots, young lad Salcedo, alongside his urge to win, delivered a menacing blow and charged towards a brighter future at the Palarong Pambansa held at Marikina. Onto a new platform of veterans held the innocent sire Salcedo, who’s ready to slay greedy monsters.
The Palarong Pambansa holds the greatest of them all; this is where the best of the best get sifted, where the winner will be hailed as the nation’s pride. Being able to qualify for this national event is already a big stepping stone on your journey. Lad Dexter became one of the few to qualify for this event, proving to everyone that he is a force to be reckoned with and not just some young lad from the province. He did his best, but it just wasn’t his time yet. Although he wasn’t able to bring back the crown and slay grimaces, he brought pride and joy to his school and his region. He was able to represent Region XI and Comara T. Manuel Central Elementary School II at the Palarong Pambansa 2023 in Marikina.
Behind the successful image that sire Dexter had put up for himself lies the rigorous training and sacrifice he had done in order to achieve the name and image he has now. He underwent many
One of the most common challenges student athletes face is balancing academics with training. When asked how he manages both, JB shared that it all comes down to careful planning and time management. “Simple lang,” he says. “Time management at nagsasagawa ako ng pangaraw-araw naschedule na kung saan mas madali kong malalaman ang akingsusunod na hakbang. Sa paggamit ko nito, naitatakda ko ang mga oras para sa aking pag-aaral, pagsasanay, at paglalaro.”
Through a well structured daily schedule, he’s able to give
troubles along the way, starting from the lack of a proper trainer. Growing up in the province, there was merely a chance that would light up your journey, and for young Dexter, the potential he had would’ve sought him new heights, but having no proper trainer that would mold him into a successful athlete chained him from soaring his best. Another one is, he was lacking proper equipment in his training. Alongside the grumpy weather on hand, he was not able to train properly with numerous factors to consider first: lack of a professional trainer, lack of equipment, and unpredictable weather. All of this stood up as a hindrance for him to bring out the best from him.
Furthermore, these hindrances that he faced were nothing but a phase in life. His inner core to make his young self proud drove his mentality to strive for the
better and to not settle at just second place. Instead he came back much stronger and made it to the Nationals.
Amidst multiple troops of different regions, hails Davao Region’s Dexter Salcedo, representing Region XI with pride onto the nation’s platform. Making it to the Palarong Pambansa was only a stepping stone to the journey that sire Dexter will embark on, paving onto life’s manifesto with a smile. For him, life was just like a game of tennis: just have the courage to face the no man’s land and remember that it was at the baseline of your career that led you to your success.

n the life of an athlete, the path to excellence is rarely straightforward. It requires not only physical dedication but mental resilience, time management, and the ability to overcome challenges. For James Bryan Caballero, a discus thrower, these values are at the core of his journey to success. Below, we sit down with him to learn about his commitment to the sport, the obstacles he’s faced, and the inspiration that keeps him pushing forward.
equal time to both his studies and training, ensuring he’s making progress in both areas.
For many athletes, the desire to win stems from a personal passion for the sport, but for JB, his motivation runs much deeper. He’s not just in it for the medals and trophies, but to honor his family and prove his doubters wrong. “Upang magkaroon ng maraming parangal, tropeyo at medalya, para rinpasikatin ang apilyedo ng tatay ko hindi lang sa buong rehiyonkundi sa buong Pilipinas,” he explains. “At higit sa lahat, para mapatunayan ko sa aking mga kritiko na kaya kong tapatan, higitan, at lampasan yung dating mahinang ako.” His competitive spirit fuel his journey,
he’s not just competing for victory, but for a deeper sense of purpose. Every athlete faces challenges along their path, and forJB, the road hasn’t always been smooth. One of the significant obstacles he’s encountered is a lack of proper equipment for training. However, instead of letting this limitation hinder his progress, he used it as a source of motivation. “Sa labing animna taon kung pagtira sa mundong ito, marami na akongnaranasang mga hamon. Isa na rito ay ang kakulangan sakagamitan na gamit sa aking pagsasanay. Subalit hindi ko itoginawang hadlang upang hindi magpatuloy. Sa halip, mas pinagbutihan ko pa sa pag-eensayo dahil alam ko na darating din ang
panahon na matatamasa ko ang tuktok ng tagumpay.” This resilience is the foundation of his success—turning challenges into stepping stones toward his goals.
As James Bryan Caballero continues to rise, it’s clear that his journey is about more than just winning, it’s about chasing something greater. Every throw, every challenge, and every setback is a step toward achieving not only personal glory but honoring his family and community. With relentless determination, he shows that true success comes from throwing for glory, pushing beyond limits and proving that hard work and persistence lead to greatness.
“The mark of a true champion is how they respond to losing”

Part of the Diocese of Mati Catholic Schools Athletic Meet, is the dynamic and disciplined martial art known as Taekwondo. Sparring matches between taekwondo players take skill, with high-impact kicks, fast footwork, and precise techniques for both self-defense and sport competition. Being a good player certainly deserves praise. However, even the greatest of kings can be dethroned.
As the competition progressed, it was finally time for the head-to-head match between the taekwondo players from Maryknoll School of Lupon and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy. Since both players had a history of competing for competitions of even higher levels, supporters from both sides were stoked to witness which of the two brought the sharpest sword to battle.
It was in intense match between both champions, each move filled with pride and an eagerness to win. Eventually, the judges chose a winner, and they called upon the player from Maryknoll School of Lupon. Filled with pride and both shame for failing to defend their title, IHMA expressed their frustration on the judges’ final verdict.
One of the witnesses during the commotion was Ms. Jeanica Ochea, a Gr 11 on duty medic, from the Fr. Ferry Medical Assistance Team of MSLu. According to her, “Not to be bias pero I could say nga mali ang ihma ato, dili man ko kabalo sa rules and regulations sa taekwondo pero makita man gud sa ilahang acts nga wala silay sportsmanship which is very important sa bisan unsa nga field.”
Ms. Ochea also highlighted how the opposing side questioned the committee assigned, claiming they were bias for hailing the player from MSLu as the victor. Yet, she also stated that though the assigned committee was from the host municipality, Lupon, they were however not a faculty or staff from Maryknoll School of Lupon or the Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy, so there was no room for bias.
Staying true to their oath, we are confident in the abilities of the people from the committee, that they were honest with their responsibility. This situation nonetheless, shines on how hard and painful failure can be to accept. In the end, this was not just a contest of skill, but a war without honor, where the true cost of victory was measured not in triumph, but in the sacrifices of respect and dignity.
