September 2020 Dear Friends of Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall, Thanks to you, the COVID-19 virus has not stopped us from celebrating our “Outstanding Caregivers,” the heroic Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall staff members who are working tirelessly through this pandemic to keep our community healthy and safe.

While the St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation is not hosting a gala this year, we thank this community for your generous outpouring of financial support. Your donation is providing a box dinner for two to each MSLC staff member, and the balance of funds raised will benefit Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall.

Throughout the month of September, we are celebrating the incredible work of our MSLC team. Our “Outstanding Caregivers” who provide dedicated service to our patients, both at the bedside and behind the scenes, to continuously make a difference in the lives and well-being of the people in this community who we are so proud to serve.

The Outstanding Caregiver award is traditionally designated to health care providers who exemplify compassion to all patients and serve as a caregiver ambassador for Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall, while sharing their expertise with others in the field. With 99.9% of our staff reporting to duty when the pandemic arrived in our community, the MSLC staff embody these qualities, as demonstrated by their heroism, determination, compassion, and care for the countless lives they have saved.

At Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall we thank our healthcare heroes for their steadfast dedication to the ongoing health of our community, and we thank our donors, colleagues, and friends for your support that allows us to continue our mission.

OUTSTANDING CAREGIVER HONOREE The Staff Members at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall The Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall team truly embodies what it means be a hero. COVID-19 arrived on our doorsteps on March 9, 2020. It was a day that many of us anticipated, planned for and quite honestly worried about in the weeks leading up to that moment. No amount of planning could have prepared the MSLC team for what was about to happen, but one fact remains: the MSLC team is unlike any other. Whether at the bedside, procuring and stocking PPE, collecting data, preparing meals, cleaning and sterilizing patient care areas, embracing redeployment to another area in need of assistance, developing new technologies to enhance communication between patients and their loved ones, registering patients as they entered our organization fearful and alone, and so many other roles in between, your work was impactful and truly made a difference.

Joan Cusack-McGuirk, MSLC President and CEO has lovingly stated so many times that Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall is so much more than the brick and mortar; that it is our heart, spirit and the family-like bond that holds us together. COVID-19 has made that more evident than ever before. There are no words to sum up the appreciation and gratitude to each and every member of the MSLC team felt by our leadership, the Board of Trustees, Foundation Board of Directors, and the entire community. The 2020 Gala is a tribute to this incredible team.

GET WITH THE GUIDELINES®-STROKE GOLD PLUS QUALITY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC) has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for the 11th consecutive year. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

MISSION LIFELINE BRONZE AWARD The Cardiovascular Institute earned the 2020 Mission Lifeline Bronze Award for STEMI care, the highest honor we were eligible for based on the date we began submitting data to the program (July 2017).

EXCELLENCE IN NURSING AWARDS Five members of the Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC) Nursing team were recognized at Hudson Valley Magazine’s Excellence in Nursing Awards. Congratulations to Matthew Agazzi-Cowton, H. Janelle Carr, Aimee Croce, Diana Fernandez, and Stephanie Paruolo.

The Littman Cancer Center achieved a three-year re-accreditation from the American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer in June 2018. In addition, our cancer program received commendation in 5 areas (pathology reports including all recommended elements; accurate and timely submission of data to the CoC database; public reporting of cancer program outcomes; clinical trial accrual; and oncology registrar’s attendance at state/regional conferences).

Cornwall Radiation Oncology Services also successfully completed their American College of Radiology Accreditation and Department of Health survey with zero deficiencies!

Our Radiology Department achieved a three-year re-accreditation by the ACR for Mammography, Computerized Tomography and Ultrasound.
