PTANA National Chair Report

Hello PTANA, Welcome to our 14th Annual Convention, here at the beautiful Dreams Playa Bonita Resort in Panama from 18 to 23 October 2022. We have some very important business to attend to, including voting on bylaw amendments. This is our opportunity to make improvements on how PTANA operates and build on the success achieved over the last 14 years. In addition, we will enhance our professional development through a series of workshops as well as engage in various networking opportunities with international and local Panamanian suppliers during our tradeshow.

As we continue to exit from over two years of pandemic life, PTANA has gone about the business of increasing membership in all the current chapters and continued outreach to potential new chapter locations. In the last two years, we’ve added chapters in Las Vegas, Louisiana and are reestablishing chapters in Atlanta and Philadelphia. A checklist was developed to track the progress of the new chapters (under New Chapter Committee Chair, Mary Fulton). While much of the travel industry went dormant during the pandemic in 2020-2021, PTANA implemented an ongoing series of virtual training programs for the entire membership to replace the in-person chapter programs that were the norm before the shutdown. To assist our members with keeping track of the myriad of online learning opportunities, the PTANA Master Calendar was established on our organization’s website.

The PTANA organization made some significant strides over the last few years. A major development was the establishment of the PTANA National Brand Awareness Committee (under Chair PJ Douglas Sands). This committee brings together members representing the chapters to develop strategies to more effectively promote PTANA within the travel industry. This effort has increased our membership and forged better relations with our industry partners. This committee was very instrumental in developing an abbreviated membership application with access through a QR code that was successfully used during the 2021 and 2022 Las Vegas Travel Agent Forums to bring in new members to the organization from travel advisors attending those events. These accomplishments would not have been possible without the initial relationship established by PTANA with the Travel Show Marketing Group, which organized the forum. As a primary sponsor of the Las Vegas Travel Agent Forum the last two years, PTANA members were engaged in a wide selection of activities during the event. In 2021, our members staffed the registration table and exhibit booth at the tradeshow and presented a well-attended panel discussion, featuring

4 PROFESSIONAL TRAVEL AGENTS OF NORTH AMERICA PROMOTING DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL

the benefits of a PTANA relationship. Our organization also provided promotional bags for the forum. With lessons learned from our previous show experience, we expanded our tradeshow exhibit area in 2022 to better handle the flow of travel advisors through our booth. Both shows resulted in a significant number of new members joining PTANA.

“PTANA is all about the Relationship”, as was coined by our National Advisory Board Chair, Lila Nicholas. Chair Nicholas was not only instrumental in establishing our relationship with the Travel Show Marketing Group, but she also continued to nurture the important special relationship with Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) that gained PTANA one of the few “Premier” status levels offered within that organization. Chair Nicholas is also very much responsible for PTANA’s successful National Affiliate Partner Program, which brings in special suppliers in support of our organization. If that’s not enough, Chair Nicholas had a large roll, along with your National Chair and National Parliamentarian in putting together this convention.

PTANA is not a paying job for our members. It’s about a volunteer commitment to better our organization. This convention involves a lot of working parts and some hard work on the part of the many people, visible and behind the scenes to make this effort successful. We could not make this event work without the generous convention sponsors, including Accento (DMC) Panama, Sandals, Jamaica Tourist Board and others along with our host, Dreams Playa Bonita Resort, Panama. During this past year leading up to the convention, I want to recognize some key PTANA members, who had major rolls in the planning and implementation of this event, including Brenda Cole (National Co-Chair), Gerrie Maccannon (National Parliamentarian), Lila Nicholas (Advisory Board Chair), PJ Douglas Sands (Brand Awareness Committee Chair), Janet Mosely (National Membership Chair), Kathy Marshall (National Pubicity Chair), Paula Dozier Sr. (Policy & Procedures Chair & Parliamentary Consultant), Verna Hartlove (Convention Team/trade show), Reese Gorini (Convention Team/FAMs), Debbi Fowlkes (Technical Advisor), Christol Powell (Community Outreach/Ways and Means Chair) and others. Without volunteers like these members, PTANA could not offer an event such as this. Please thank them when you see them.

I want to personally thank every one of you for attending this convention. PTANA is your organization and by attending the convention each year, you demonstrate your commitment to PTANA and the organization will be better for it.

As you participate this week, please learn as much as you can, continue to build relationships with each other and our travel partners and by all means have some fun too!

PTANA Founding History

On January 26, 2009, Professional Travel Agents of North America (PTANA) - was formed officially.

PTANA was envisioned by a group of travel agents attending an executive meeting in Ocho Rios, Jamaica in December 2008 as members of a prior Caribbean focused organization. Several persons attending that meeting were from the current PTANA Maryland, National Capital Area, and Philadelphia Chapters

(Mary Burley, Robert Bush, Paula Dozier, Sr., Pattie Mitchell, Christol Powell, Christine Shields, and Geormine Stanyard). The consensus from that meeting was to form a new organization by and for travel agents to better serve educational and networking objectives of members globally. Hence, the agreement was the first Chapter to form a new organization process would be joined by the other chapters.

On January 12, 2009, fifteen (15) Maryland members met to discuss the logistics of developing a new organization.

On January 26, 2009, the Maryland Chapter voted to retain their current board members from the prior organization and established the PTANA name (they also served as the interim National PTANA Board). That Board was comprised of: Mary Burley (President); Christine Shields (Vice President); Jacqueline Williams (Treasurer); Yvonne Coates (Secretary); and other Members were-Verna Hartlove, Paula Dozier, Sr., Richard Bromberg, Nancy Manley, Odessa Goodman, Brenda Cole, Marian Smith, Gloria Jerry, Angela Epps, and Victoria Rogers.

Groundwork began to create a completely new organization - including establishing the mission, developing the Bylaws, and designing a logo. The winning logo was designed and submitted by Lila Nicholas (February 2009). Completed Bylaws documents were presented to the membership body at the first PTANA Convention in December 2009 (Christine Shields, Chairperson, Mary Burley, Brenda Cole, Paula Dozier, Sr., Odessa Goodman, Verna Hartlove, and Geormine Stanyard). The work of this committee laid the foundation for what is now the “Professional Travel Agents of North America.”

A formal announcement was made to the Travel Industry Partners on March 29, 2009. We were on our way!!

Spearheaded by Pattie Mitchell, then President of the Philadelphia Chapter, the First Annual East Coast Trade Show facilitated the vigorous growth in membership for PTANA, which continues to this day.

Membership Chairpersons' Report 2022

Welcome PTANA Members, Membership is the HEART of this organization. The value of PTANA membership is clearly being understood by more Travel Agents and Industry Partners than ever before. Therefore, the need to update the application process through automation was a key component in attracting members and retaining Chapter Membership Chairs.

PTANA began the online application process in 2019. The need to expedite the process and provide access to applicants not within reach of local chapter was or goal. The disruption of in person meetings due to COVID-19 restrictions solidified the need to obtain online applications. In 2022 a push to obtain 100% of online Membership applications is our goal.

PTANA strive to be a more Eco friendly and strive to reduce our carbon footprint wherever possible. After online applicants are confirmed, they receive immediate access to the following:

• A Welcome letter

• In-depth discussions with Industry partners (E&O,CRM)

• Chapter meetings nationwide (13 Chapters)

• PTANA’s CLIA Premier Benefits

• Invitation to Getting the most from your membership meetings

• PTANA Newsletter “Alonzo’s Education Corner”

• And so much more.

Each Chapter Membership Chair is required to have access to the Application Tool through JotForm. The reports are then reconciled with Chapter Treasurer and Publicity Chair to ensure all members have equal opportunities to FAMS and other events. Members are encouraged to visit the PTANA. org website to access all information and view contact information for all chapters.

PTANA consistently receives request to form new chapters. The development of a Recruiting Chapter Membership Committee was created to serve the special needs and requirements of form New Chapters.

Membership will always be a crucial part of expansion. Our focus this year was member retention and providing value to our Industry partner, by producing well educated booking agent members.

Policies and Procedures for Chapter Membership Chair as well as National Membership Chair are updated continually as needed to meet the ever-changing role of this committee. Sincerely,

Janet Mosley, National Membership Chair

Central Virginia Chapter President’s Report

Central Virginia Area Chapter President’s Report

October 2022

Resilient, Faithful, Supportive, Family and Thankful! These are the words I use to describe the Central Virginia Area Chapter of PTANA Coming through the last few years of uncertainty has not been easy. But we made it! I am most proud of the loyalty our chapter has shown to PTANA, the travel industry and to our growth as individuals and Travel Advisors. No matter how hard we had to work to rebuild our businesses and CVAC PTANA we did it. We stood together, kept in touch, and supported each other through it all.

Chapter Achievements:

• I am happy say we are meeting live and in PERSON! You never know how much you miss something until you can’t do it.

• Our membership numbers are consistent and steady.

• Membership engagement has been great. Our Facebook page is growing, and we are reaching more Travel Advisor’s each year.

• Community Outreach: This year we look forward to supporting our local grassroot charities. We are happy to continue the PTANA mission and give back to the community.

Thank you to all the vendors who have supported us through in person and virtual learning for the last two years. No matter how tired we all were of virtual meetings and trainings, without them we would not be ready for the surge of travel we experienced this year.

Last but certainly not least, I want to give a very special thank you to my Chapter Board of Directors. I would not have made it without your support and encouragement. You all have helped guide this chapter to higher heights. Together, we can do anything. You are LOVED & APPRECIATED!

Finally, as we look toward 2023, we remain STEADFAST! CVAC will continue to focus on Travel Advisor education (with a heavy focus on backend business development), and the expansion of membership/Industry Partner relationships that will take us to the next level.

Respectfully Submitted by: Tiffany C. White, Chapter President

Hampton Roads Chapter President’s Report

The travel industry has endured an unprecedented pandemic the last two plus years, but the Hampton Roads VA Chapter has continued to serve its members throughout this period with ongoing virtual education programs, when in person events were not feasible. We faced a significant membership challenge during the pandemic, due to declining business and member health concerns. However, an aggressive outreach program has resulted in our current chapter having 22 active travel advisors and 3 industry partner members. We are not resting on our laurels and continue to contact local travel advisors and industry suppliers to join or rejoin the chapter.

As we approach the end of 2022, the Hampton Roads Chapter is reaching its 13th year as part of PTANA and will continue its effort to provide a viable local resource for the travel advisor community in the Hampton Roads area. Our goal is to enhance professional development for our members and build a strong network of travel advisors and travel industry suppliers. To that end, our members will continue to be engaged in key programs during 2022 and beyond.

Girls Home Foundation

Over 100 Years Serving Panama and Empowering Girls

About Us

“The Bella Vista Children Home” asthe Fundación Hogar de Niñas de la Capital was called at the beginning, is a ministry of the Episcopal Church of Panama. This Home has given shelter, love and care to hundreds of girls at social risk, preparing them for their insertion into society with Christian, civic, and moral values that our country needs.

The first beneficiaries of the Home were five Panamanian siblings whose only support, after the death of their mother, was the 13-year-old older brother who earned a living shining shoes and doing other jobs at the Club House in the old Canal Zone. The situation of these brothers caught the attention of the Red Cross and their request for help was answered by the Bishop of the Episcopal Church, James Craik Morris and some parishioners of the Cathedral of San Lucas.

Our values

We are an institution of the Episcopal Church that offers a temporary or permanent home to unprotected girls to provide them with protection and training with professionalism and love.

Achieve a high level of professionalism and excellence, improving the quality of life of abandoned girls to achieve their successful reintegration into the community.

The Fundación Hogar de Niñas de la Capital has been established in order to give girls and adolescents a decent place to live, promote in them a comprehensive education with responsibility, honesty, tolerance, selfconfidence to develop their strengths.

Las Vegas Chapter President’s Report

Vicki Gunther Las Vegas Chapter President

Starting a new Chapter at the height of the pandemic (January 2019) was and continues to be challenging for everyone. The Las Vegas PTANA Chapter continually strives to be a chapter of excellence, fun, educational and resourcefulness. For the last 3 years, Zoom has been the forefront for us to receive education, and we are proud to say we were able to keep PTANA members informed every month with something new. We have had 4 in-person 2022 semi-successful meetings. Plans are in the making to bring in-person meetings back fully in the fall of 2022.

Because we are currently the only Chapter on the West Coast, we welcome agent from Nevada, Utah, California, and Arizona. Happily, the Travel Agent Forum continues to introduce agents to PTANA and our chapter has grown because of it.

Many positions on the Board are still open. When the Board is complete, and with sufficient funds, our next focus is a charity to adopt.

In closing, I want to thank those on the Board who tirelessly contribute their time to making our Chapter work. Technology would be at a standstill without our Secretary. Our new Education Chair has made our training/education run smoothly after the loss of our past Chair who left big shoes to fill because he was amazing. I also want to thank the support we receive from other Chapters - from joining our Zoom presentations to doing what we do best, assisting each other all due to their experience in the travel field. I am proud to be a member of PTANA; my goal is to make our Chapter members feel as excited as I do about our organization. As our new city’s logo goes, “We are Vegas Strong”

Maryland Chapter President’s Report

PTANA MARYLAND CHAPTER has had a very busy but a wonderous year. As always, the goal set by the Maryland Chapter Board was to continue to provide to each and every member top level access to educational lessons and training methods. We are succeeding in that goal because of the "relationships" with our Industry Partners.

Our chapter started the year off with, Cancun-Oasis Resort, and then onto the Barbados Tourist Board, Marriott, International Hospitality Travel, Cruise Maryland, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, Jamaica Tourist Board, Barcelo, GOWAY, Riviera River Cruises and St. Lucia. We happily returned to in-person meetings and a new venue. Community Outreach has been focusing on PTANA's mission to support and donate to local and worldwide charitable organizations and causes. Community Outreach continues to give back to our community. Our charity contributions this year include, American Heart Association, Wounded Warriors Project, The Shriners, and future charitable activities will be, Back to School Drive, Sickle Cell Anemia and Toy Drive for the holidays. Additionally, Community Outreach conducted a silent auction which was very successful.

Many of the Maryland members enhanced their educational needs by attending CLIA Cruise 360, Travel Agent Forum in Las Vegas, FAM to Miami and Puerto Vallarta.

Membership is on the rise, and we are looking forward to greeting new members in 2023.

PTANA Maryland Board of Directors and members want to remember our dedicated members who have passed on, including Mr Preston Curvey, Mr. Michael Lacey, Barbara Lorandos, Deborah Mullen, and Thaddeus Warszawski. May they continue to guide us.

National Capital Chapter President’s Report

Working to rebuild the chapter after a two-year lull in the travel industry has by no means been an easy feat. Combine that with half of the board members being new to serving and it often meant extended meetings and a lot of ideas that sometimes got left on the cutting room floor. Holding our annual retreat earlier in the year (at the Rod N’ Reel Resort on the Chesapeake Bay) was key to getting to know each other better while having more time to fully plan most of this and next year’s events and budgets.

Though we struggled with membership numbers, we are closing out our year with probably one of the most robust series of programs that we could have asked for in this climate of The Come-Back.

Programs:

From the Caribbean to Central America to Europe to Cruising to Staycations and Specialized DMCs, the National Capital Area Chapter maintained its intended schedule of monthly membership meetings. While most were virtual, we voted to test drive an in-person event with our annual Cruise Night in the Spring. Seeing how successful that event was and now that in-person gatherings are back in style, we signed off on our second in-person event which will be a Winery Crawl in November. We are currently exploring a venue for our holiday event as well.

Financials/Ways n’ Means:

One of our missions was to maintain a healthy treasury and in doing so, voted to keep most of our meetings virtual in order to comfortably offset any costs that we faced, including vendors who could not handle increased meeting expenses. To cushion the coffers, we launched our second Double Good Popcorn fundraiser that in 4 days yielded $1700 in sales and returned $850 to the chapter. We have plans to launch another popcorn fundraiser in the Fall which we anticipate will be even more successful.

Community Outreach:

We are so proud of the relationship that we are developing with SOME (So Others May Eat) based in Washington, DC. Who knew that in addition to serving meals to those in need it has expanded its offerings to include various components of education and career development. Not only was the chapter able to make a generous donation to SOME, but a few board members have lent their time to serving in various capacities.

In Memory and In Prayer:

This year we said farewell to charter chapter member and great friend Miriam Waldon, owner of Miridon Travel. We also had several members who experienced deep personal losses as well as members who faced life-changing health events around whom we continue to wrap our love and prayers.

A special thank you to the National Capital Area Chapter Board members who lent their talents where needed and worked toward every goal with the premise of I Am PTANA in the forefront.

Submitted on Behalf of the National Capital Area Board: Shanell Nero-Stewart, Alisa Hyman, Priscilla Jamison, Patricia Montegut, Dorothy Cooper, Mary Hunter, Pamela Jones, Jacinta McDonald, Amy Bonheim, Andrae Roberts-Duke and Kirk Whyte.

New England Chapter President’s Report

The PTANA New England Chapter nowadays, is constantly in a recruiting mode. As you know coming out of the COVID 2020, 2021 years with travel agents receiving little or no income, it has been hard work going forward. We were able to maintain our numbers as a chapter, thanks to the dedication of our Board members. Most of us have assumed double duties.

This year, 2022, we have concentrated on education and membership. We have found that attending conferences such as Cruise360 and The Travel Agent Forum in Las Vegas, give PTANA national exposure and has helped with our recruitment efforts. We were able to pick up some new members, most notably 2 members from Connecticut. We are working with those members to keep them connected to our New England PTANA family.

We would like to mention that thanks to the Membership Orientation program from National Membership Chair Janet Mosley, the Educational Training from Houston Chapter President PJ Douglas-Sands, the weekly newsletters from National Chair Alonzo Duncan, and the promotion of the 2022 PTANA Convention in Panama, we are able keep our members informed and engaged during these times of rebuilding.

Our goals for the future include increasing our membership to over 30 members for next year by heavily promoting PTANA New England and offering the members all of the above mentioned resources, together with the awesome PTANA affiliates and the tremendous opportunities that they have to offer.

This year we have worked with our industry partner and has brought aboard, suppliers such as ClubMed, Pleasant Holidays, Jamaica Tourism Board, Accento Incentives (from Panama).

I would like to thank, once again, our PTANA New England Board Members, and also the support of PTANA National Board Members, other PTANA Chapters for the Zoom trainings, programs, and networking opportunities so we can all keep moving forward, servicing our travel community.

Call to Volunteerism, “ I AM PTANA”

Presented by Geormine D. Stanyard PTANA 2015 CONVENTION

What does volunteerism mean to you?

How is volunteerism defined by or for PTANA

What is YOUR Calling?

“I AM PTANA” is a concept derived from the idea that while PTANA is made-up of several hundred travel agent members along with our most valued industry partners, the growth and sustainability begins and ends with each individual who comes forth to participate in doing the work of PTANA. Though the National Board of Directors is the entity that maintains the focus and overall responsibilities of the organization, it is the individual who helps to shape the focus, execute the plan and ensure the future of PTANA. This organization is only as great as its members’ continued support; therefore

“I AM PTANA” serves as a Call To Action for all members to (be or) become involved. Whether it is at the local level or national level, each member must see that one’s time invested in serving the organization not only compounds the strength and success of PTANA, but also ensures the gratification of personal growth and business development.” (Written by Christol Powell.)

The mantra was conceived by our past Chair (2012 & 2013) and past Parliamentarian (2010-2013), Christol Powell and Geormine Stanyard, respectively. Serving as 2014 Convention Co-Chairs, discussed this concept very early one morning (around 1am) before and in preparation for a 2014 convention planning meeting that day. A “We ARE PTANA” mantra would not capture the essence of the “call to” an individual member. The “I AM” pre-fix was more appropriate to speak to each member. As we all know, it is easy to hide behind the “WEs” in the world because we always rely on that dependable someone else to step-up or come through for the team.

36 PROFESSIONAL TRAVEL AGENTS OF NORTH AMERICA PROMOTING DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL

That “WE-mentality” at some point catches up with a team or organization when we exhaust our working members. So it is our hope that when a member wears the “I AM PTANA” shirt that they’ll reflect on the mantra and really mean it personally!.

Let’s break it down…….

• There are observers/complainers and then there are WORKERS. What is your calling?

• There are name only volunteers for committees and boards that hold positions while WATCHING OTHERS perform several roles and hold many hats. What is your calling?

• There are those that do not show up to board and chapter meetings consistently and others that make every meeting or will send their written committee report when absent. What is your calling?

• There are those that will step-up voluntarily or hear the call when tapped. What is your calling?

• Fact is nothing gets done by observers and complainers – ONLY WORKERS – not even leaders that glorify in holding a position without moving any muscle will get results. ONLY WORKERS. What is your calling?

To thank those that have volunteered along the way…PAST AND PRESENT and to those willing to work in FUTURE… ………….. HERE IS YOUR CALL TO ACTION!!

REMEMBER:

There is a job to be done, Could be lots of fun. Just give us a call, And we’ll have a ball. You must have a big heart. It’s always a help to be sorta smart. The money is rare (none in our case), But the rewards are big in compare.

-Original words by Pat Boyes

If these ring true to YOU — You can proudly say, “I AM PTANA!”

Volunteerism is the blood-line of this organization. We cannot survive otherwise. There is tremendous strength in working together. Great will PTANA continue to be if YOU hear the call.

I AM PTANA means “Many hands make light work” (my personal mantra – authored by John Heywood) When we ALL step-up!

Somewhere (on this magnificent ship) in this room at this time, someone knows they have a skill, talent, or work ethic that PTANA needs. It might be
