QuikTrip official SAFE PLACE By Sonia Duggan
sduggan@csmediatexas.com QuikTrip stores in Collin and Denton Counties are not only a great place to get gas, snacks and the like, but they are also an official Safe Place organization, where young people can go when they need immediate help. Safe Places are easy to spot because the bright yellow diamond-shaped “Safe Place” signs or decals identify them. Youth should identify the symbol and know they could depend on any location with the Safe Place sign. What does this mean? For youth- anyone in an unsafe situation whether they have been kicked out, abused, are homeless, or any other situation that makes them feel unsafe, they can go to QT stores 24-hours
a day, 7-days a week for help. A store employee will immediately call City House in Plano where they have 24-hour assistance specifically for crisis situations. They provide emergency shelter and transitional residential services to children and young adults in need due to abuse, neglect and homelessness. “QuikTrip is an invaluable partner in Safe Place program expansion, outreach and frontline service to youth in need of immediate help,” said Laurie Jackson, President/CEO of National Safe Place Network. “For more than 24 years, QuikTrip Corporation has shared the vision of creating safety nets for youth. QuikTrip stores have served as designated Safe Place locations where youth in need See CONVENIENCE page 2A

Presley Seagars digs into a plate full of spaghetti at the CERT community dinner fundraiser April 18 held at Sachse Fire Station No. 2.
By Patty Montagno Staff Writer
pmontagno@sachsenews.com About 150 people attended the first Community Emergency Response Team’s spaghetti dinner fundraiser April 18. They were lining up around the Fire Station No. 2 with paper plates in hand enjoying the aroma of Butch John’s famous homemade spaghetti sauce. “The evening was a huge success,” CERT President Jeri McGrath said. “The money donated will go towards
CERT equipment and educational supplies.” Attendees feasted on platefuls of pasta, salad, garlic bread and marshmallow cake for dessert. The event featured door prizes, a silent auction and a kid’s fun zone. Attendees parked at Whitt Elementary School and were shuttled back and forth to the fire station by the firemen all evening. “This was a great evening,” Sachse resident Cathy Cobb said. “It was a wonderful idea. My husband Dennis visited with so many people.”
During the evening, McGrath presented a plaque of appreciation to members of the fire department for supporting the CERT organization. McGrath said her main concern was to keep everything on schedule so people could home before the impending storms began. “I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw the last shuttle leave,” she said. “We cleaned the area quickly and got home as soon as we could. Most of our members had been cooking or setting See COMMUNITY page 6A
