The Tri-County Veterans Honor Guard posts colors at the start of the Audie Murphy Day parade.
Parade of honor
The Tri-County Honor Guard will present the colors during the parade and at the veterans’ reception at the Onion Shed at 10:45 a.m. June 22. The honor guard was formed July 4, 2008, when the group marched in the Royse City’s 4th of July parade. The guard formally became a 501c-19 tax exempt veterans’ organization in October 2008. According to organizer Gene Allen, the honor guard formed to perform military funerals, march in parades and share in educational programs at schools. According to the group’s charter, the Tri-County Honor Guard will maintain a membership ratio of at least 90 percent veterans. The honor guard has members from several counties and cities including Collin, Rockwall and Fannin. During the Audie Murphy Day celebration, the organization will perform a number of duties. To begin, they will lead the AMD parade by presenting the colors. During the ceremony at the Onion Shed they will present the colors, perform a 21-gun volley and play taps. The Audie Murphy Day parade will begin 10 a.m. Saturday, June 22.
Along with a chance to mingle and visit with old friends, memorabilia from various wars and conflicts will be on display during the veterans reception and registration. Items from area veterans and Audie Murphy mementos will be featured. Autographed movie posters, books and other Audie Murphy memorabilia that was donated courtesy of Larry and Margaret Jordan of Lubbock will be featured in First United Methodist along with a multitude of other items brought to the event by local veterans. The Farmersville Historical Society will also have a military display open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. “This is an opportunity for the exhibitors to display their collections of memorabilia from their years of service and to educate younger generations. It is also a time for the AMD Committee to display all of the items that were donated to the City by Mr. Jordan
