FOOTBALL SATURDAY, SEPT. 17 Morningside football looks to keep its win streak alive after outlasting no. 3 Northwestern in week one and setting aside no. 21 Dordt in week 2, 49-21.
THE SERIES The Mustangs are unbeaten by Briar Cliff, going 20-0 since the rivalry took to the gridiron in 2003. The closest contest between the two teams came in that first season, as Morningside escaped with a 21-3 win. That 18 point victory margin was matched in 2007 as the Mustangs won 31-13. The most lopsided contest came in last year’s 84-7 rout.
THE MATCH-UP Morningside’s offense continues to build steam, led by senior quarterback Joe Dolincheck. The Mustangs average 459.5 yards and 39.5 points per game. Morningside’s passing attack holds a 3:1 yardage advantage over the run game, with 347 passing yards and 112.5 yards rushing. Dolincheck’s favorite target this season has been Zach Norton, who has 288 yards and four touchdowns through two games. Alongside Dolincheck in the backfield, Ryan Cole has rushed for an average of 74 yards per game, averaging 4.2 yards per carry and collecting two touchdowns. Briar Cliff approaches their fourth game of the season averaging better than 312 yards per game. The Chargers are anchored by sophomore quarterback Luke Davies, who has eight touchdowns on the season. Kobe Johnson leads the Chargers receiving corps with 200 yards, while Aaron Okoro leads the team in receiving touchdowns and catches. Asante Anglin leads BCU out of the backfield, with 103 yards on 27 carries.
