Mindfulness group practices “presence” on Mondays

Parents and Counselors come together through coffee

Every Monday during MavTime, up to 15 students dedicate their time to Mindfulness Mondays. Mindful Mavericks is a club to learn how to meditate and regulate breathing to allow the body to adopt specific postures for extended periods of time. It is not only for health, but to also relax and ease one’s mind, especially in stressful environment like school.

“I think everybody should participate,” Nikkolas Vichith, 11, said. “It’s really great for your health, and if you’re down in the middle of the day, it keeps you relaxed.”

The atmosphere of the room is quiet and peaceful with the only noise being the instructor’s voice. Heidi McCanlies, sponsor, explained the benefits of Mindful Mavericks, which includes: releasing strong emotions and anxiety, optimizing brain functions, balancing nervous systems, and reducing fear, stress and anger.

“It relieves my anxiety, or just my uneasiness,” Kyara Wondra, 12, said.

McCanlies includes all old and new comers, and if a student misses a session, she even has print-outs at the ready so everyone can be on the same page. Some handout topics include: taking a letting-go breath, practicing silent check-in,taking a three-part breath, and practicing alternate-nostril breaths.

The first Coffee with Counselors was held on Oct. 2 with an impressive first turnout of 45 parents. Counselors provided bagels and s coffee from Panera Bread. ef 7 “My inspiration was trying to find 5 a way for parents and counselors to connect better.” Lyndsey Brown, counselor, said.

Brown thought of the event as she felt that parents were not as involved in their student’s academic career as they should be.

“Often times we [counselors] get asked the same questions over and over.” Brown said, “This is an opportunity to answer some of the frequently asked questions.”

Often times students won’t tell their parents all of the opportunities that are offered through the school. It is very beneficial for parents to be involved in their child’s education and get the inside scoop on what is happening at the school.

The next event will be held on Nov. 6th where financial aid will be discussed Coffee with Counselors is a monthly event from 7:00-8:00 a.m. on the first Monday to discuss information to better involve parents of South’s students. To get involved, counselors sent an RSVP email out to all parents and from there it can be filled out via Google form.

Aerospace students work with Airbus executives, build a plane

The aerospace engineering students at South have been working alongside professional engineers to build a custom plane.

“We’ve made a good deal of progress, we have the vertical stabilizer almost done and the left wing almost done as well...” Michael Le, 11, said.

“I was assigned to the fuselage but we had to start over on that because we’re waiting for parts to come in, so right now I’m working on the wing.”

The students have made progress on different parts of the plane by splitting up into three groups, pitch, yaw, and roll, that alternate building on different weeks. One group builds a week,

while the others partake in other activities.

Progress slowed down for a few groups due to parts being scrapped and deliveries not coming in time. Airbus and Tango Flight, another company sponsor, are paying for the parts of the plane.

“I know Mr. [Mikel] Tinich wants to test fly it a bit, but I don’t know if he’s going to get to,” Benjamin Bolinger, 11, said. “It’s going to go through a lot of checks beforehand. I hope we have a professional pilot test flying it first, but Tinich is very eager to fly it and fly the plane itself.

We’ll see what happens.”

Through trial and error, the students hope for a completed build by the end of the school year. The students hope for the plane to be airworthy by May 5.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME THE SCHOOL’S RESOURCE OFFICER? My kids go to school at Maize South Elementary and Maize South Middle, and that is what drew me to working at the school. I chose to be an SRO instead of a patrol officer for a change of pace. Being a patrol officer is dealing with the 2% of people that are bad out there. Here at South, I get to deal with the other 98% of people who are good.

WHAT MAKES YOUR JOB AT SOUTH ENJOYABLE? Getting to interact with the kids and administrators. I get to interact with the community here. I go to all the events and do presentations around the school. I am busier as an SRO than I ever was as a patrol officer, but here, I deal with all good people and I like that change.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME THE SCHOOL’S RESOURCE OFFICER? I’ve been working for a police department for the last 12 years. I’ve been in Maize since March, and I worked in Mulvane for nine years before that. The other three years was in Sedgwick County working in the jail. Prior to that I was in the Air Force for four years as an intelligence tech. Essentially I worked with communications traffic like radios and radar.

WHAT ARE STUDENTS’ TYPICAL RESPONSES TO GETTING A TICKET? Most [students] say they didn’t know what the infraction. In some instances, students’ citations will be dismissed. But some students decide to pay their fines in pennies.

WHAT IS THE CONSEQUENCE OF NOT PAYING A TICKET? If students don’t pay their tickets off, they will not receive their diploma until the ticket gets paid for.

HOW ARE THE PARKING TICKETS CHANGING IN THE FUTURE? Citations for drug and alcohol possession are getting taken off [of the tickets] because they are misdemeanors -- not just fines. Texting and driving, not wearing a seatbelt and driving/parking on the sidewalk or lawn are being added to the ticket as citations.

WHEN ARE THE NEW TICKETS GOING TO TAKE EFFECT? I’ll start using the new tickets in the next few weeks, as soon as they’re ready to go.

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL COST OF A TICKETED CITATION? Tickets cost anywhere from $15 to some infractions that can be fined at $50. The most expensive ticket is Driving without Due Regard, which means a student is driving without paying attention to posted signs or without thinking about other students’ safety.

leep deprivation occurs when a person’s body doesn’t get enough sleep to replenish energy. Sleep is a major factor in a teenager’s growth and development. Skipping sleep can affect students’ education and can take a toll on their health, both psychologically and physically.

When students are tired, they tend to “drift off” and not pay attention in class, which can have a large effect on grades and projects. It also can cause students to end up forgetting things and having a shorter memory, much easier than when they have a full night of sleep.

“It [Sleep deprivation] affects students in many ways,” Katy Carter, school nurse, said.

“It lowers their immunity, can make them contract many kinds of illness easier and it typically takes them longer to fight it off. It affects them emotionally and mentally in a negative way because they are mentally tired.

They can become emotionally unstable and can take longer to comprehend things.”

Mentally, sleep deprivation can alter the student’s mood and could make them become emotionally unstable, angry, sad, irritated easily, and overall dejected. Physically, it can cause them to binge eat and break out, according to the National Sleep Foundation.

One factor that can go into contributing to sleep deprivation is that some teenagers have trouble calming down. Students tend to have a long day at school and have long interactions throughout the day. People tend to stay up late if they have a lot of homework and many participate in activities after and before school.

“My brain tends to ask a lot of questions [when i try to sleep] and those questions upset me if i don’t answer them. A lot of it is

emotional issues and psychological things,” Benjamin Bolinger, 11, said. “Past events that I’ve gone through that have continued to annoy me, it can vary. Sometimes, it’s just something stupid that could be a simplistic question, something that just keeps you up.”

Students’ curfew also affects their sleeping patterns. Many have to fit in school, work, sports, friends, family and church while maintaining a good sleep schedule. Students have to take into account all the homework they get that day, chores, sports, family and friends. This can cause their curfew to be pushed back further and further to where they are up at early times, only to get around three to four hours of sleep that night.

“I tend to get home any where between 6:00p.m. to 2:00 in the morning,” Brandon Glenn, 12, said.

Some parents don’t give their children a curfew. This can sometimes give the teenager more freedom and can teach them how to control themselves when they go out on their own, but it can also have a negative side effects for their parents. Their parents don’t always know when they’re children are going to come home or what they are doing for the most part.

“No, I really don’t want a curfew. A curfew to me is limiting and it doesn’t give you very much freedom. It also doesn’t really prepare you for college and the real world,” Brodie Gullic, 12, said. “Because you move out of your parents house, it’s essentially you and your self control. If you have very many limitations while living with your parents, it can be hard to adjust to the fact that you need to be on task and doing certain things at a certain time. Otherwise, you will pay the price for it.”

American citizens have the right to peacefully protest. Following the actions of Colin Kaepernick in 2016 and other NFL (National Football League) players in 2017, Many players and owners have formed a protest against racial injustice and police brutality. They have chosen to kneel during the singing or playing of the National Anthem.

In Government and United States history classes, South students are informed about their rights, and the different aspects of the Constitution. Having students aware of their government and the political past of their country prepares them for the many real world situations.

“It is super important for students to understand.” Matt Kerr, social studies, said. “All students will not be engineers, mathematicians or writers but they will all be citizens, an uninformed electorate is dangerous for a democracy. We cover the Bill of Rights in US History and Government. I like to have ‘fake’ scenarios in which the students decide what right is at stake and to hold lots of discussions.”

The controversy was added when Donald Trump, businessman and President of the United States, tweeted about the issue.

“If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect...our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the National Anthem. If not, YOU’RE FIRED. Find something else to do!”

With his communication to the country, he sparked more arguments, and social media outbursts of the argument. American citizens tweeted either their opinion or arguments towards players and other aspects of the issue.

Ian Rapoport, an American sports writer, pundit and television analyst for the NFL, tweeted (@RapSheet) “#Seahawks originally planned to kneel together, hands over their hearts, during the anthem.

But some players close with military objected.”

High schools and high schoolers across the country have also

joined in on the protest.

According to Mark Joseph Stalin, a writer from The Slatest, Parkway High School in Los Angles sent a letter to all student athletes about the issue. Their principal, Waylon Bates, released the letter in which stated kneeling was prohibited, and all students who violate this rule will risk loss of playing time or even revoke their position from the team.

Samuel Alicea, a 17 year-old wide receiver for the Tilton School football team in Boscawen, NH, knelt during the National Anthem in 2016. Alicea corresponded with Peter Biello, a reporter for the New Hampshire Public Radio about his participation.

Alicea mentions how in the first moment of protest, he was scared. Scared for himself and the reactions that would be sparked.

During the third game of the season, Alicea knelt for the first time.

“That was exhilarating,” Alicea expressed to Biello, “My heart was beating so fast when I first did it. People don’t realize how nervous I am. I gave it a confident look but deep down, I was scared of the outcome I was going to get.”

Maize USD 266 doesn’t have a policy on the matter; if the school did it would be stated within other rules and conduct in the student agenda book. Unlike Wichita USD 259 and Valley Center USD 262 who require students to have a note to be cleared to protest.

“Neither the Maize Board of Education policy nor the student district handbook addresses the Pledge of Allegiance and/or national anthem,” Lori Buslet, Director of Communications for USD 266, said. “However, Maize USD 266’s practice has been to invite students to participate in the pledge. We do not require anyone to stand or to pledge allegiance. If a student were to choose not to participate, there is no penalty or repercussion. During school, however, a student could not cause a disruption to the learning environment.”

Anxiety and Depression have many common links and, at times, go hand in hand.

One of these connections could be an increase in social media and cell phone usage. Recently there are studies being conducted to see if there is a relationship between time spent on electronic devices and anxiety and depression in young adults.

In 2016, The University of Illinois conducted a study to see if depression and anxiety had a direct relation to Internet usage. Through the course of the study they questioned 300 students attending the university about their mental health and reason for surfing the World Wide Web. Students who described themselves as addicted to the Internet scored higher on the scales of anxiety and depression. However, the use of electronic devices solely for the purpose of eliminating boredom appeared to have little correlation with mental health issues.

But why is it that we are just now realizing the bond between Internet usage and anxiety and depression? Lyndsey Brown, a counselor at South, believes this could be do to new technological advances.

“Social media, I feel like that was something we didn’t have to deal with ten years ago,” Brown said. “A lot of times people wouldn’t say those things to our face, but they didn’t have another route to do it.”

Curious as to if there was a correlation between cell phone usage and the feeling of depression or anxiety at South, a survey was taken involving 50 students. The survey

A lion tamer takes his place in the center of the ring with a furry golden creature present at his side. The lion jumps through flaming hoops landing on the other side miraculously unscathed. Your mind races with possibilities and confusion. Finally, a clown appears, pulling a never-ending handkerchief from his sleeve. His face is coated with a layer of paint, masking his true expression and leaving him with an eternal smile.

Like actors performing a show during the circus, individuals with anxiety and depression are masters of manipulation. They are able to transform our visual perception of them, leaving us with the belief that they are at peace with their lives.

Panic attacks and over-thinking are a part of everyday life for people with anxiety and/or depression. In a recent survey of 50 students, 35 admitted to feeling like they have anxiety or depression.

According to Anxiety and Depression Association of America, 18.1% of the U.S. population, age 18 and older, are affected by anxiety disorders. Approximately 36% receive treatment for their condition while the other 64% do not.

Depression is a worldwide problem in which more than 300 million people of all ages are affected, as stated by the World Health Organization. Sadly, depression claims over 800,000 lives through the form of suicide each year.

showed that 76% of those who spend two hours or less on their phone a day feel they do not have either condition. Yet only 35% of students who spend three hours or more per day claim to feel free from anxiety or depression, while 65% believe they have one or both of the disorders.

Sadly, cell phone usage and external conditions are not the only cause of depression or anxiety.

“Anxiety and depression are not always caused, they can be genetic… It is a lot of neurological, chemical imbalances,” Brown said.

In a 2017, a study done by Stanford University explained that 50% of all depression cases are genetic. People with parents or siblings that have gone through depression are two to three times more likely to develop depression at some point in their life.

Extended research has further backed the idea that depression is not just an environmentally inherited disordered. In 2010, the National Center for Biotechnology Information, said that there is a transporter gene known as serotonin. This gene affects other genes in the body and makes the mind more susceptible to Major Depressive Disorder, also known as MDD. Whether genetic or influenced by technology use, students at South have places to turn for help - to help quiet the circus in their lives - from counselors, to teachers, to the school’s nurse.

PETLAND NEW STORE OPENS, DRAWS COMPARISON

Petland has opened a new store in Maize. It had a small opening on Sept. 2 and then its grand opening a few weeks later. The store is a local, family-owned-andoperated store whose main focus is to provide responsible breeding practices and pet care.

Many people go to Petland to find a new life companion while others go to play with the puppies, kittens and small animals. Along with animals, Petland also sells food, toys, accessories and pet care products.

“I like going to Petland because I get to play with puppies for free,” Hannah Whitson, 12, said.

The animals that Petland sells come from responsible and caring pet providers.

Petland’s pet counselors can provide all the knowledge needed when going to purchase a pet.

Although it seems like a lot of fun to buy a brand new puppy, the Kansas Humane Society has dogs and other animals that can be adopted. These animals are in need of a home just as much as the ones from a pet store.

“I think it’s better to adopt a dog rather than buying one because puppies are almost always guaranteed a home and there’s lots of dogs at shelters that need homes too,” Whitson said.

Many people believe that most pet stores are associated with puppy mills. A puppy mill is an establishment that breeds puppies in inhumane conditions that causes them to become sick.

Recent cases of Campylobacteriosis have been found with puppies associated with the Petland stores. There have been reports in Florida, Kansas, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not identified any failures of Petland’s operating system that would lead to any campylobacter infection.”

Elizabeth Kunzelman, a spokeswoman for the company, told KAKE. “Last week the CDC advised Petland to continue to do what we are already doing and to continue to educate customers and staff to sanitize their hands after handling puppies.”

CROSS COUNTRY CHASES ANOTHER STATE TITLE DESPITE INJURIES AND ILLNESS

BY ASPEN WADLOWE This year’s team is different from last year’s cross country team, as the team lost two seniors. They have returning state champion Destini Eskridge, 12, running, however, the team started practices with ts or 45 runners and dropped to 43 after illnesses. Three out of 10 7 15 state-qualifying runners were out for the girls’ team alone.

Similarly, injuries, including a sprained foot and stress fractures also plagued the team.

“I am coming off a foot injury, but I should now be able to run at the next meet” Kate Molitor,10, said. “I hated missing meets this year because of my injury.”

Their most recent meet was the Edmond Oklahoma PreState meet, and the girls finished fourth. According to many, the course was extremely muddy, which it made it harder to run and times suffered.

“I placed twentieth, and now we are training very hard to bounce back for our league meet in Hutch,” Katherine Wagner,10, said.

Boys’ cross country also placed fourth at Edmond due to some runners recovering from illness. Plus, the competition was stiff. They were not all ready for this race the team was down runners.

“The course conditions were bad, which added about 20 seconds to everyone’s time,” Jayce Meyer, 10, said.

With runners recovering and returning, the team looks forward to 5A Regionals and 5A State with their eyes on first place and the hope of repeating their State Championship from 2016.

FOOTBALL GETS NEW LOCKER ROOMS

After six months of 2. construction, the new football locker rooms have been completed and were ready for use at the Sept. 22 football game against Buhler.

“I definitely think the new locker rooms will help us relax before and after we play,” Jack Wagner, 12, said.

The players themselves believed the old locker rooms were outdated, the new locker rooms, located to the north of the football stadium, are much more modern than the old locker rooms. The locker rooms feature air conditioning, a double-sided whiteboard and much bigger lockers. There is also expanded space for coach meetings during pre-game, halftime, and post-game. One advantage of the new locker rooms is their location.

“Having the new locker rooms closer to the field will be easier to walk out to play,” Andrew Bliss, 11, said.

With the new locker rooms available for teams at the stadium, the older locker rooms near the gym were retro-fitted to accommodate girls’ teams for sports like basketball and volleyball. In previous years, girls’ teams did not have their own locker rooms due to a lack of space.

“I like being able to have the locker rooms all to ourselves, it doesn’t smell as bad anymore,” Holly Price, 10, said.

The girls’ varsity tennis team worked the past two-and-a-half months to win at postseason play.

At 5A Regionals, hosted at Goddard, girls placed fourth overall as well as Emma Queen, 12, and Kaitlyn Fields, 12, finished in third during doubles play.

“We worked really hard out there and played tough,” Queen said.

“We made sure to bring our top game.”

Preparing for the regionals tournament was not easy for some of the players.

“Private lessons are becoming a daily thing now,” Madi Wilkerson, 9, said.

When regionals approached, the tennis team was ready to put up a fight for the title, they had a trio of girls qualifying for the state tennis tournament. Emma Queen, Kaitlyn Fields, and Madi Wilkerson all qualifying for state. The team as a whole took fourth place again.

The trio is heading home for the state tournament, trying to use that advantage at home to try and take home a medal.
