Transverse Section

The Gowanus Canal is known for its artists and its resistence to outside things. The facade of the building takes on a look similar to the surrounding industrial buildings, in that it uses exposed steel. The red panels would be painted by local graffiti artists to make them a part of the building. This gives them the opportunity to be a part of the new building instead of just seeing the building appear in the community.

Genoa Library (Abroad) Individual Rendering Warmup Practice with AutoCAD and Photoshop Professor: Henrique Houayek Semester: 4th Year, Fall Semester Objective: The focus of this studio was to learn to work abroad. This studio also tested digital and communications skills as everyone needed to work from home. In addition, my partner and I decided early on we wanted to make our library extremely Deaf and blind friendly, so learning how the Deaf and blind community interacts with the environment was important to this project.

Partner: Thomas Moore My greatest contribution to this project was my interest in Deaf Space Architecture. It led to encorporating deaf and blind accessibilty into the design. Additionally, I worked on my Autocad skills by making the aerial map and my modeling skills by creating the site and building. I was also in charge of floor plans and putting the final drawings together.

Design Background: Benches that curve inward are used because people that sign tend to form a circle so that everyone can see everyone else. Other features utilized for the Deaf community were wider paths and long site lines. For the blind community, the paths were raised so that a cane could easily track them and paths curved instead of turned. Finally, a 3D printed model of the building was placed on the courtyard’s podium to be used as a tactile map.

Site Placement The site for this project was on artifical land near the city’s historical district. The city has very little greenspace, but has strong ties to the water. The site is surrounded by an international library, Porta Siberia which used to be the only entrance to the city, and the coast guard building.

Honey Horn Plantation Museum (Synthesis) Professor: Berrin Terim Semester: 4th Year, Spring Semester Objective: The plantation had buildings that let the community experience nature. The site needed a museum expansion that could contain expanded and new programming.

Partners: Stephanie Bowers and Taylon Jenkins During this project, I designed our structural system, made the plans, and made the digital model

Master Plan

Building Placement The site for this project came with a lot of older oak trees that could not be removed. As it was a strong landmark of the site, we decided to make our building surround and react to the trees. First we marked out the geometry using sightlines we liked. Then we placed the building within those lines. Lastly, we shifted sections of the building to better highlight and follow the treeline.

Building Layout Our project proposal included 2 buildings. The main larger building held most of the programming, while a smaller event building could hold private events such as a wedding. Both buildings have second floor access to a tree walk that winds through the oak canopy.

Key West Residence (Cote 10) Professor: George Schafer, David Franco, and Ulrike Heine Semester: 1st Year Masters, Fall Semester Objective: Create a building that responds to a problem caused by tourism. Key West saw a lack of greenspace and housing for locals.

Partners: Peyton Davy and Divya Agrawal During this project, I was in charge of the master revit file, plan graphics and renderings.

Master Plan

Site Location The site for this project was in the middle of Bahama Village, Key West. The population consists of descenends of immigrants, mainly from Cuba and the Bahamas. These cultures value strong community ties, but the neihborhood had no where for larger gathering to occur, as all the lots had many houses built close together.

Key West is frequently hit by hurricanes. The design accounts for this with rolling louvers that can cover the windows and protect them from flying debris. The building is also raised by 2 feet and units are on the upper floors in case of flooding. For the Cote 10 competetion, this aspect of the design was our response to Design for Change.

The Garden and the Revenue This project addressed Design for Ecosystem through its full cycle of gardening, consumption, and composting available on-site.

Design for Economy is also accounted for through the use of employment opportunities on the first floor. These both overlap through the process of the garden’s crops being used in the restaurant and teaching kitchen.

The Lawn The greenspace in this project is filled with movable furniture that can be relocated based on the needed program. On a normal day, picnic tables can scatter the lawn. On days where markets are held, tents can be pitched and tables set out underneath. Finally, in preparation for storms, everything can be moved into the first floor work room. This is a second response to Design for Change.

The Kitchen This project called for a large shared kitchen and dining space, leaving the units with kitchenettes. Removing the kitchen from the units allowed more units to be added, as well as make larger units possible to accomodate larger families. This also was a good fit for the culture, as one of the most important things for residents here is cooking and sharing food. This gave a large space where many people could cook together. This was an example of Design for Equitable Community in the project.

Philly Prison into Rehab Center (Reno) Professor: Andreea Mihalache Semester: 1st Year Masters, Spring Semester Objective: Revitalize the existing Eastern State Penitentiary into a place for those leaving the system to have a fresh start.

Partner: N/A My project created a safe, miniature, city environment for women leaving prison to live in after getting out of prison. My focus was creating a downtown area.

Programming The Northwest corner of the site is housing. The Southwest serves as the main entrance and services for the children of those convicted. This includes a school on site and a visitation center that is furnished like a house. The Northeast includes adult services such as classrooms for GED and life skills, and counceling services. The Southeast is a downtown area with stores and activities.

Downtown’s Accessibility The first floor is all public stores and amenities while the upper floors are additional housing for residents working downtown.

Section 29

Elevators are in all the buildings to reach the upper levels and ramps are built into the pathways. Most areas have slight overhangs to provide shelter from the rain and sun, as well as material changes in the hardscape for wayfinding.

Amenities Many of the features of the project were determined by the testimony of two women, Jessica Kent and Christina Randall. One specific result was a small on site store, as it was stated that normal grocery stores were too big and intimidating with too many options after leaving prison were one option was available.

Poe Mill Children’s Center Aerial of Team’s Projects Professor: Dustin Albright Semester: 2nd Year Masters, Fall Semester Objective: Work with clients from Poe Mill, Greenville to create infrastructure to revitalize the neighborhood.

Partners: Cierra Davies, Brittany Holladay, Hayden Holt, and Natalie Wade Together, we created a master plan. Individually, we each did one program for the project.

Project Brief Our master plan called for revitalizing existing businesses and buildings (blue), adding live-work housing, cluster housing, and ADUs to replace dilapidated housing and fill empty lots (pink and yellow), and add greenspace throughout the neighborhood (green striped).

Other empty lots recieved market rate housing (burgundy) and community resources (solid green).

The projects that were fully designed were turning the now empty mill site into a recreation center (purple), a memorial museum (western most teal), a library community center (eastern most teal), and a child care center (circled). The museum was a renovation of an existing building, while both the children’s center and the community center were located on empty lots. These programs were determined through meeting with community members and pulling information from a thesis paper about the area.

West Programming This section of the layout includes the classrooms and connections to the playgrounds. The nursery rooms are slightly smaller with adjacent nap rooms, while the older classrooms are larger with adjacent restrooms. Both sides have open air play areas, flat, elevated areas for good weather, and a courtyard.
