The global market for lycra has been witnessing a noticeable increase due to rising The use of spandex has resulted in fabrics that fit sellers on the body like a second skin and have good shape retention without any deformation throughout the life of the garment, especially in knitted fabrics. In addition, the outstanding features of spandex are low moisture absorption and resistance to normal apparel exposure to sunlight and to the most common chemicals.

Lycra damage or breakage is a regular phenomenon inelastic or stretch garment manufacturing. This problem is not primarily detected while fabric manufacturing or processing but it is visible extensively just after garment washing. Spandex filament is damaged at excessive temperatures either in the heated chamber or in the steam compartment. Generally, depending on the percentage composition of the Lycra /Spandex component and the overall fabric construction, the textile processor encounters problems like inadequate or excessive polymeric heat-setting resulting in fibre scorching, edge curling and loss in elasticity.

Lycra protector package is specially designed to protect the fiber elasticity and strength of Lycra with high performance. With excellent adhesion, it can penetrate the fiber. It can better play the role of fixed protection and anti slip e ect. and maintain the elasticity of the fabric; in addition, when used for soft fabrics, it can stop the displacement between fibers and improve the drape.

Editorial

After two tumultuous years, finally we will be ending 2022 with some confidence. The pandemic is behind us and while the Ukraine-Russia war remains, its impacts have decreased as the world learns to survive with it.

But India is feeling the pinch of a global slowdown, with exports showing paleness. India may not be able to withstand growth in exports next year due to the economic slowdown in western countries. The impact of this is already visible in Indian export performance with merchandise exports growing at a mere 0.6 percent in November 2022 after catching in the previous month.

India's GDP growth will sluggish to 5.7 percent in FY 2023-24, as exports and domestic demand growth are reasonable. India's economy is entering 2023 with new expectations to achieve major targets such as a USD five trillion economy and to move one step closer to becoming a developed nation by 2047. India is healthier positioned to navigate global headwinds than other major emerging economies.

Meanwhile, India is looking at 2023 with major hopes, but there are a few roadblocks that are making the economic prospect di cult to predict. Excluding that, India will enjoy some relief due to the G-20 presidency mela, which will attract attention, tourism and some money flow.

Lycra Protector

People around the world becoming more conscious about their health and are getting engaged in various sorts of sports or fitness activities. This is creating huge demands in the sportswear market which is largely dependent on the availability of Lycra / Spandex.

Spandex fiber o ers excellent strength, weight and versatility which makes it very popular among textile manufacturers. It also finds wide usage in medical applications which is also contributing to the sales of the product.

Spandex is a synthetic polymer. Chemically, it's made from a long-chain polyglycol combined with a short diisocyanate, and contains a minimum of 85% polyurethane. This elastomer can be stretched to a certain degree and it recoils when released. These fibers are stronger, lighter, and more versatile. In fact, spandex fibers can be stretched to upto 500% of their length

The material is lightweight, elastic, stretchable and produces e ective resistance against perspiration, body oils, detergent and abrasions. It is used in the production of casual clothing, trekking pants, undergarments, home furnishing items among others

Physical Properties of Lycra:

Tenacity: 0.7 gm/den

Density: 1.21-1.35 gm/c.c

Elongation at break: 400-700%

Elasticity: Excellent

Moisture Regain (MR%): 0.6%

Resiliency: Very good

Ability to resist friction: Excellent

Chemical Properties of Lycra:

1. Acids: Resistant to acids

2. Basic: Hot alkali damages the spandex

3. Effect of bleaching: Bleaching agent damages the fiber and it becomes weak.

4. Resistant to Organic solvent, light, mildews, insects

5. Dyes: Disperse dyes, Acid dye are suitable to dye spandex filament

Key benefits of Lycra:

• Exceptionally Elastic

• Stronger and more durable than conventional rubber

• Good tear resistance

• A third of the weight of natural rubber

Lycra Denim

Stretch jeans are likely the most popular type of jeans right now. Stretch jeans are a style of jeans made of stretch denim fabric. Stretch denim is a fairly new type of denim cotton (or cotton/ polyester blend) that incorporates a small quantity of Lycra, into the fabric. Jeans made of stretch denim material may look like regular jeans, but give further elasticity and “ give” with the wearer’s body movements. Stretch jeans are also generally more form- fitting than jeans made without any stretch in the fabric.

In the washing and dyeing process of denim products, once the spandex is degraded and the loss of elasticity occurs, it's principally impossible to repair, so it's necessary to preserve lycra to ensure that there will be no quality problems during washing. According to the physical and chemical properties of polyurethane filaments., Elastic denim products containing lycra cause loss of flexibility during the washing process, altogether due to the process, chemicals and mechanical action of the process itself which causes the lycra to break and dissolve, and eventually cause the loss of flexibility. During the rinsing process, because spandex isn't resistant to chlorine bleach, it'll form a nitrogen-chlorine bond in the hypochlorite solution to damage the fiber, and the damage of polyether spandex is more serious. When the water temperature in the tank is too high or the time is too long during rinsing, the spandex will degrade, causing the fabric to lose flexibility.

Lycra Damage

Lycra damage or breakage is a regular phenomenon in elastic or stretch garments manufacturing. Lycra breakage is also called Spandex missing or Lycra missing. This problem is not primarily detected while fabric manufacturing or processing but it is visible extensively just after garments washing. Spandex filament is damaged at an excessive temperature either in the heated chamber or in the steam compartment.

It is very sensitive to alkali, chlorine bleach and abrasion as well. Spandex filaments can be missed through the width of fabric. Spandex can be damaged in the garments stage during marking and just after cutting the cloths for sewing. Spandex filament comes out from fabric because of not having a tension after the selvage being cut. Tension variation in fabric also causes spandex breakage in the center position of the sheath. Generally, depending on the percentage composition of the Lycra/Spandex component and the overall fabric construction, the textile processor encounters problems like inadequate or excessive polymeric heat-setting resulting in fibre scorching, edge curling and loss in elasticity.

Remedial measures to avoid Spandex Breakage

• Minimise the SPI

• Use proper needles like ball point needle

• Dye the fabric at wet processing zone rather than dyeing at garments zone

• Do not use hot gun.

• Do not use alkali hypo bleach

• Do not stone wash

• Apply low temp.resin rather than high temp

• Use low temperature ironing

• Some special auxiliaries have been developed to avoid lycra / spandex deformation. (Lycra Protector)

Mechanism of Lycra Protector

Lycra protector is a polymeric compound that can penetrate inside the fibre, forms a thin protective/insulative layer and thus maintaining the elasticity of the fabric. In addition, it can act as anti-slipping agent to prevent the shrinkage or breakage of the stretch Lycra yarn in lycra and lycra blend fabrics. It can be used as Lycra protector in textile wet processes like desizing, oxidative bleaching, dyeing, heat setting etc

Features and Benefits

• Protects elasticity and strength of Lycra

• Applicable on natural, regenerated and synthetic fibers and their blends

• Retains inherent characteristic fiber properties

• Enhances surface softness and bounciness

• Imparts excellent non-slip effect

• Effective under varying acidic and alkaline pH conditions

• Stable to high electrolyte and water hardening agents

• Provides heat resistance and avoids thermal yellowing

• Forms a continuous, uniform, transparent film

• Confers desired dry hand feel

Fig 1: Possible mechanism of Lycra protector

FABPRO LP Liquid - is a unique protective chemical based on temperature regulating compound for controlling and minimizing the adverse impact of varying thermo-mechanical processing conditions commonly encountered in polyurethane based fabric. The undesired yellowing behavior and the grinning tendency of Lycra from the core of the fibre can be effectively overcome by the formation of a protective film. The ultimate effect is in terms of avoiding damage to Lycra and protecting the end use properties of textile material.

A special finishing agent can be applied to preserve lycra properties in garments. Rosil Stretch Liquid is a synergistic blend of reactive silicone and additives. It is a versatile finishing product that imparts permanent stretch property to knitted goods containing Lycra and a impart soft handle to woven goods as well. During processing due to the lubricating effect of yarns move more easily reducing the “pull” required to stretch fabric. Combo treatment with Fabpro LP Liquid can prove beneficial for lycra preservation.

Features and benefits

• Increasing the stretch and recovery characteristics.

• Luxurious soft handle

• Improved wearability after laundering

• Lightness

• Fits to the shape of your body => Well Crafted

• Impression that it is part of yourself

Conclusion

Traditionally, lycra fibers find application in products such as intimate wear and activewear, hygiene products such as diapers. However demand for daily wear and casual clothing with comfort, stretch, fit, and in daily wear, is influencing manufacturers to incorporate spandex fibers in the aforementioned clothing products.

Being petroleum-based, prices of these products are largely unpredictable. This negatively affects the profitability of spandex manufacturers and suppliers, and, in turn, inhibits request growth. Products such as Lycra protector will help to preserve lycra in a garment to improve the durability of same. Such products not only open new opportunities for textile makers but also help to meet the latest customer demands.

Enzymes in baking industry

Baking is a common name for the production of baked goods like bread, cake, pastries, biscuits, crackers, and cookies. Wheat flour is the most essential ingredient and a key source of enzyme substrates for the product. Even cereals, baked goods such as gluten-free products or rye bread are also considered to be baked products. Enzymes are an important ingredient used in most bakery products. For many categories, the baking industry actually has a long history of enzyme study and application. The use of enzymes in bakery foods is over 100 years old. Enzymes are important in baking, due to the restrictions on the use of chemical additives, especially in the manufacture of bread and other fermented products.

There are two uses for enzymes, either the enzymes are used to convert the raw materials into the main product, or the enzymes are used as additives to alter afunctional characteristic of the product. In the first case, the enzymatic process is undertaken in optimised and controlled conditions to enhance the catalytic potential of the enzyme, whereas in the second situation, it is more di cult to assure optimal conditions and control the enzymatic reaction.

Enzyme Substrate Benefit

Amylase Starch Flavour, Colour, Shelf life, Volume

Lipase Lipids Emulsification, shelf life

Protease Protein Flavour, Colour, Extensibility

Enzymes as processing helpers in the baking industry are here to stay. Their functional capabilities, ability to create more e cient processes and reduce costs makes them important  product in today's marketplace. The advantage of using enzymes is that many are naturally occurring components in bakery ingredients such as wheat and soya flour. They have played a major role in traditional bakery products such as sourdough and bread made using sponge or brew systems. Enzymes will be destroyed by the high temperatures involved in the baking process helping bakers to maintain a highly desirable clean label image for the product.

Textile Focus:

Development and Commercialization of N-Methyl Morpholine Oxide 50%: Demand for cellulose fiber such as Lyocell is rising for the manufacturer of Apparels, home textiles, footwear and Fashion, medical Indusrty.

As the awareness for eco- friendly products is spreading among the consumers. They are spending more on products manufactured from eco-friendly fibers. This is driving the sales of cellulose fibers.

India is also one of the major manufacturers of apparels and home textiles. With Make in India , it is easier for investors to open manufacturing sites in the country. With increase in disposal income of consumers, spending on home textile and personal apparels is also more

So over all global cellulose fiber market is projected to expand at an impressive rate.

The viscose process has been the most dominant process for the production of regenerated cellulose fibers. In the conventional viscose process, the use of caustic soda, carbon disulphide are not environmental friendly.

So Lyocell fiber has emerged as an important class of regenerated cellulose that is produced by directly dissolving with N-Methyl Morpholine Oxide. Process involves dissolving wood pulp in amine oxide solution then extruded into a diluted solution of amine oxide which precipitates the cellulose as fiber. Amine Oxide solution is completely recovered and recycled.

Advantages of NMMO process in Cellulose fiber production:

• Huge advantage over traditional viscose process where flammable toxic raw material carbon disulphide and caustic soda are used in large quantities which results in hazardous waste generation.

• NMMO process eliminates the use of carbon bisulfide and caustic soda. So no by-product formation and process is environmental friendly.

• The NMMO solvent is nontoxic and it is completely recycled during the process.

• Lyocell fabrics are also biodegradable. Manufacturing lyocell is also environmental friendly because less water and energy is used when compared to other manmade fibers.

Based on the above NMMO consumption will grow significantly. To cater these markets Unitop Chemicals successfully developed and commercialized Morpholine derivatives especially N-Methyl Morpholine oxide and our product is accepted in India and globally.

PETCARE CORNER

Essential Nutritional Approach Every Dog Parent Should Know / Have

A well-balanced nutritious diet leads to a happy, healthy and long life. Such is true for us as well as our beloved furry friends. A balanced gluten-free diet with whole animal ingredients may help a pet’s compromised gut, skin or bone health, weight, and even immunity.

Knowing your pet's health is critical to the selection process and will help you select the finest food for your dog. Because no two pets are alike, they all have distinct di culties with their overall health.

Balanced Dog Food is Essential

It is critical to suit your dog's energy needs to sustain its everyday lifestyle. Fats and proteins provide most of the energy in the diet, followed by carbs.

High-Quality Animal Protein

Proteins are crucial in developing and maintaining cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. Protein in dog food is an essential building block for muscle, skin, hair, nails, and blood development. Instead of choosing a dog food that uses animal byproducts for protein, opt for a brand with high-quality whole animal ingredients for complete protein absorption. Before selecting one, a responsible dog parent must also know about the various conditions that may a ect a dog’s diet. For example, if a dog allergic to high protein contents consumes more chicken, it may develop bald spots, abdominal pain and breathing issues. For such pets, dog food containing salmon would prove a healthier option.

As per AAFCO, a developing puppy needs around 22% Dry Matter or DM protein, whereas an adult requires 18% DM

Well-Balanced Fats & EFAs

Fat serves various functions in the body, including energy production and aiding in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. One of the most significant functions is to provide essential fatty acids (EFAs), which enable

Whole Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are essential in a dog's diet because they give energy in the form of glucose and are a good source of dietary fibre. Soluble and insoluble dietary fibres are carbohydrates that are essential for a dog's appropriate gastrointestinal functio nd well-being. It protects the colon as well as the gut microorganisms. Carbohydrates usually come in the form of corn, wheat or soy. Corn, wheat, and soy are not harmful to pets, but dogs are naturally meat eaters. These components are indigestible to them. Since the dog’s body can not absorb the complete nutrition from the food, you lose more value for your investment without getting any benefits.

Similarly, if you feed your pet dog too many carbs, they may gain weight and become obese. An ideal Dog food should be free of corn, wheat, and soy, providing fewer carbs and aiding weight management.

Dogs require an average of 3.5% to 2.5% fibre in their regular diet.

Other Essential Nutrients

Vitamins A, D, E & K, as well as Biotin and Folic Acid, help in DNA Synthesis, bone formation, blood clotting, eye function and other mood-enhancing functions. On the other hand, minerals such as Calcium, Zinc, Magnesium etc., help in the development stage of puppies and gestating mothers.

Polymeric Additives

in Cosmetics and Personal care

Cosmetics and personal care products have a huge market presence as they provide a wide range of properties to the consumer. Such products can be used to enhance the appearance of an individual’s skin, hair, nails or teeth. Personal care products can carry out their function as cleansing aid while often providing an additional benefit that can last well after the cleansing has taken place.

Polymers have been routinely used in many personal care and cosmetic products.

Polymers in the personal care industry are categorized by a number of classifications in the International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient (INCI) dictionary, including organic polymers, inorganic polymers, siloxane polymers and naturally occurring polymers. These classifications generally are further divided into sub-classes: homo-polymers, copolymers, cross-linked polymers, mixed classification polymers, dendrimers, natural-sourced polymers and synthetic peptides.

Polymers are commonly used ingredients in many personal care and cosmetic products. The applications take advantage of the various properties of polymers to impart unique benefits to their formulations. The range of properties is depended on the class of polymers that have been utilized in formulations. With polymers, high-performance products can be created. Polymers like natural polymers, synthetic polymers, organic polymers as well as silicones are used in cosmetic and personal care products as film-formers, protective barriers, emulsifiers, thickeners, modifiers and aesthetic enhancers.
