EDCI 5190 - Technology Integration in the Instructional Setting Madison Dotson Unit Rationale - Visual Art Elements of Art - Color Understanding the Color Wheel Applying Color Theory
In this unit, fifth-grade students will be learning about the Color Wheel, parts of the color wheel and how colors interact on the color wheel. Students may not understand why color theory is expressed with a circle, how to use the color wheel to mix new colors or how to apply color theory when making art. Students will have learning experiences through video, song, color mixing demonstrations, hands-on color experiments, and a color theory art project. These activities are designed to equip students with a fundamental understanding of Color as one of the 8 Elements of Art and support further explorations of the expressive and perceptive qualities of color. Color has a powerful influence over human behavior and, to some degree, can manipulate your perception of what you see and feel. Students need to understand the general application of color theory and the relationship between colors as well as the physiological impacts of certain color combinations. Once students understand this they will be able to mix color with a limited palette and achieve intended visual effects. Students will also recognize, in both art and life, how color can be used to communicate ideas.
