The Invention of the Band-Aid By: Alex Turner “Ouch! I scraped myself!” “That’s okay, just put a band aid on it.” Did you know that it wasn’t always that easy? Thanks to Earle Dickson you can just cover it up with a band aid. Earle Dickson was born on October 10, 1892 in Grandview, Tennessee. When he was an adult he worked at the company of Johnson & Johnson. When he worked there he lived in Highland Park, New Jersey. It was there that he invented the band aid. Earle Dickson died on September 21, 1961 at the age of 68 in Kitchener, Ontario. Some interesting facts about Earle Dickson are that he was a cotton buyer when he worked at Johnson & Johnson and he got a huge job promotion after he invented the band aid. Some things that happened around that time was, in 1920 women got the right to vote. Another thing that happened in 1920 was the great depression. Also, in 1922 the tomb of King Tut was discovered. In 1922 insulin was discovered for people with diabetes. One year after that the talking movie was invented. Two years later in 1924 the first Olympic Winter Games happened. Finally, in 1927 Babe Ruth broke the home run record for professional baseball. The invention benefited people because every time someone was injured they had to cut the square of gauze and tape it down with medical tape. It was painstaking and now all they have to do is peel away the paper and apply it. The Band-Aid is very simple to use. First, you must take it out of the box. Then, you peel the two pieces apart. Next, you need to peel off the two papers that cover the sticky part. Finally, you need to apply it to the injured area of your body. That is the reason now you can just put a Band-Aid on it.
