Many will have heard of Philip Morris International’s iQOS (ostensibly an abbreviation for “I Quit Ordinary Smoking”). And while iQOS isn’t the only “heat-not-burn” product in the market or in development, it’s one of the leading such products in many ways.
P
erhaps most importantly to producers, retailers, and consumers of established vapor products, the deep pockets Philip Morris International can bring to bear in their promotion of iQOS make it a pathfinder for the product category.
What It Is, How It Works The iQOS is more similar to a “dry herb” vaporizer than to an e-cigarette or mod. It is comprised of several distinct components, including a heating device, a portable charging case (PCC), a microUSB charging cable, an adapter with which to charge the PCC and “HeatSticks”, which resemble short cigarettes. The iQOS heats real, propylene-glycol treated, and extremely compacted tobacco to 350 degrees rather than to the 800 degrees at which ordinary tobacco cigarettes combust.
