GOING GREEN

— PERSONAL TALES OF CBD SUCCESS Christine Galdamez of Ft. Worth has been using CBD gummy candies off and on for the past 4 months, as needed for her chronic anxiety. She mainly takes them at nighttime and has used varying mg strengths of CBD.

GALDAMEZ SAYS, “GUMMIES PROVIDE RELIEF FROM SLEEPLESS NIGHTS OR ACHING MUSCLES FOR ME. THEY HAVE IMPROVED MY MENTAL CALM, BUT NOT CHANGED ME AS A PERSON, AS A WHOLE.”

14

She foresees her plan to continue using CBD products and is looking to branch out to tinctures and other types to quell her mental misery. “I feel so relaxed after I ‘chew’ a gummy. I actually let it dissolve in my mouth and I feel a soft, calming effect that is more natural than when I take Xanax.” Christine Galdamez Ft. Worth, Texas

Courtney Vest calls Magnolia, TX home. She’s brand new to CBD and has been using it sublingually for less than ten days. Vest also struggles with mental disorders and takes Sertaline for depression and anxiety.

VEST SAYS, “IT DEFINITELY MAKES MY SLEEP BETTER. AS FAR AS MY MENTAL STABILITY GOES, I DON’T FEEL A CHANGE JUST YET, BUT I THINK I FEEL LESS ANXIOUS.” Vest says she will definitely continue to use CBD products and is very excited about exploring different products that she’s seen. She’s impressed to see CBD for pets, as her dog gets car sick when taken on road trips. She’s interested to see if CBD can help her dog become road warrior.

2018 Farm Bill

LEGALIZES

HEMP BY JOHN CASTLE

16

On December 20, 2018, Congress and President Donald Trump officially signed the 2018 Farm Bill — essentially legalizing the production of hemp in the United States. This monumental move changed the course of the CBD products and hemp industries but also, more broadly, marked an historic moment for the United States in general. While perhaps not as monumental as the passage of the 21st Amendment in 1933, it marked a substantial and important return of power from the government to the free market. The story as it originally appeared online; then, updates on some of the effects we’re already seeing: Multiple sources report that after passage of House Resolution 2, otherwise known as Farm Bill 2018, through House on with a vote of 213 Aye to 20 Nay, and through the U.S. Senate on with a vote of 87 Aye to 13 Nay , President Donald J. Trump has signed the bill on December 20, 2018. The cultivation of industrial hemp is now decriminalized across the United States.

17

BUSINESS

Hemp has been illegal to grow without a permit in the United States since the signage of the Controlled Substances Act in 1970, due for the most part to its close relation to marijuana. That prohibition is finally over. Now, with few exceptions, hemp is legal to cultivate, process, buy and sell, possess, and use across the United States. But it’s what we didn’t know in 1970 about the health benefits of CBD that makes the return of hemp to the free market a paradigm change in consumer health. No more should CBD retailers and entrepreneurs have to “buck the system” or fall sleep at night wondering if they’ll wake the next morning to discover that the DEA or a state-level analogue agency has raided and emptied their stores. President Trump spoke at length about rural broadband internet access, combating the opioid crisis within the United States, welfare reform, lightly boasted that the improved economy has lifted 4.6 million Americans from government dependence and back into a living workforce.

18

Although the historic decriminalization of hemp didn’t receive direct mention from President Trump, the effects expected from this move have been seen and anticipated by members of the industry. Said Joe Bradley of Bradley Brands:

But, according to Dunson, the passage of Farm Bill 2018 is about to clear the waters significantly.

Michael “AuNatural” Dunson, founder and owner of Pinnacle CBD, had this to add:

“Just like Alabama, when it passed through Congress, they fell into line the next day. But what you had was, a lot of states just couldn’t interpret that kind of muddy language and all that gray area when it came to hemp, so they just defaulted to “it’s all illegal.” But now that they’re saying, at the Federal level, it’s not illegal anymore, you have all these states just falling into line with that new status.”

“The 2018 hemp Farm Bill, a couple things it does is it clears up a lot of the gray areas that were in the 2014 hemp Farm Bill. Also, it removes hemp and any hempderived products from the Controlled Substance Act. So it actually just makes it very clear. The problem is actually that a lot of states have just misinterpreted the law and said it was illegal this whole time, but that wasn’t the case.

When it comes to the legality of CBD, then, there is no longer any doubt — it is now legal at the Federal level, provided it is sourced from hemp. Still, states such as South Dakota, where lobbyist influence has established a monopoly, may be a different matter. There will be battles fought in courtrooms in that state, possibly in others. CBD Magazine will report from the front lines to keep our readers apprised of the results.

“…it’s the flood gates we’ve all been waiting for. Real business should be commencing soon.”

And the results have been flooding in. States which previously have been taking a wait-and-see approach are now moving ahead to align state policy with the new Federal policy; just one example is Texas, which this week saw its House Committee on Agriculture and Livestock release an interim report urging state lawmakers to decriminalize hemp for the sake of the state’s farmers, economy, and environment. Meanwhile, CBD products proliferate across the nation, in forms from edibles to e-liquid for vaping to sublingual tinctures; even shoes stores in the Dallas Fort Worth area now carry CBD-infused health and beauty products. Porsche’s new track-bound beast the 718 Cayman Clubsport incorporates hemp body panels. When it comes to hemp cultivation, processing, and the industries and products that are springing from it across the country, an historic page has been turned. CBD Magazine is excited to be here to guide you through the next chapter.

CBD are companies

20

vAPE NOT companies BY AMBER MEYER

It’s a popular misconception that vape products and CBD products are one and the same — especially by those outside of the industries. The two are not synonymous with each other, so let’s clear that right now and put them in two categories.

1) Vape products, such as e-liquid, are for the purpose of smoking cessation and contain a regulated drug called nicotine. 2) CBD, or Cannabidiol, is a nonpsychoactive hemp derivative known for its healing properties. In fact, it’s said Queen Victoria used CBDrich cannabis for menstrual cramps in the 19th century. So it’s been around just a little while.

21

COLUMNS

What exactly is CBD? CBD is one of many parts of the cannabis plant. Because it is missing the psychoactive component of THC, CBD will not get you “high.” Its value is in its intrinsic ability to lock onto receptors in the human endocannabinoid system, and aid the physiological process in things like pain management, and memory, as well as anti-inflammatory and other autoimmune functions.

For people who suffer with chronic pain, anxiety or depression, CBD has proven to be a viable alternative in place of medications including opioids, opiates, and benzodiazepines. The number of combined e-liquid / CBD companies that are looking to get in and cash out quick is increasing at an exponentially alarming rate.

Yes, you can vape CBD, and yes, you can add CBD to e-liquid. But just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should or that it’s the only option. Sadly, many companies out there are not about bringing this industry up. By not employing best business practices, they are tearing it down by putting questionable products into the hands of consumers. Regulation is imperative and impending. But until that time, manufacturers must hold themselves accountable. This means using quality raw materials, proper facilities with real accreditations, proper extraction methods, proper bottling practices like batch codes, and adjacent reports for purity and quality. This product is going into someone’s body with the intention of supporting heath and wellness because they believe in CBD. Consumers deserve the best product, the best business practices, and the explicit transparency of manufacturers to ensure that what they are buying meets what the product is being sold as. There is a lot of “quality of myself”

22

going around in those bottles, rather than quality product with optimum benefits. That needs to stop. Choosing to play fast and loose with people’s health denigrates this amazing product and its benefits, and is the exact opposite of what CBD is about. I think Ben Harper said it best, “what’s from the earth is of the greatest worth.” And as more research is done to bring CBD’s benefits to the forefront, the potential to transform the quality of life for millions of people grows. But part of that transformation must come from proper business practices from the CBD companies making it.

ORGANABUS

Stays the

Course BY NORM BOUR

24

She is known as the woman with one name: Annie. And anyone who has been in the CBD space for a few years is familiar with her company, Organabus. Annie Sais started Organabus in 2010 after graduating from New Mexico State and knew she wanted to run her own company. She had inspiration and motivation from her sister, Erin, and brother in law, Roger Kay, who entered the vape market with the Tasty Puff e-liquid line, so that was a good pattern to follow. They were also the former owners of HQ magazine, the first alternative magazine that gained a following. Sais started with a detox product as a way to start a company and placed an ad in an alternative products magazine, but she kept running into questions about CBD. She started taking the CBD product in 2010 and liked it. She also wanted to sell it and wanted the packaging to be trendy and hip but wanted great ingredients. The biggest requirement was that they be healthy, tested and organic. Annie wanted to stay organic and since CBD was often confused with cannabis she smashed the

two words and came up with Organabus. That name also led to a great logo which consists of a bus with a cannabis leaf logo on the side. She started production in 2010 which was a big step, but made easier with her sister and brother in law’s guidance. She started with liquid since they already had bottles, and followed the Tasty Puff model with packaging, distribution, and retail. “In the early days it was a challenge to learn dosages and processes, which got more complex with edibles and animal products,” she shared “I wasn’t too concerned about legalities, but we had scares over the years. We made sure that everything was tested before importation, before manufacturing and with the end product. We had

26

to be sure we had no THC in order to protect ourselves.” Even today there is still confusion over regulations, and many potential buyers balk when they worry about legalities, even with the Hemp Farm Act passage which removes federal restrictions on commercial hemp.

Doing it backwards Sais is a pioneer, but she is the last to admit it. Anyone who starts a business out of college and develops a following like Organabus is a force to be reckoned with! They now make about 100 SKUS, and the major sellers are still tincture drops since they’re easy to control dosage, but bath balms are getting momentum But one of the more notable variations with her model is that she did this whole thing backwards.

Most businesses in vape or CBD start at the retail level, then go distro with their own and other products and then sometimes go into manufacturing. After all she has done so far, now, after 10 years, she is finally opening a retail shop. And what a shop it will be! Though still under construction, with an opening in Q1 of 2019, it will be 3000 square feet and be adjacent to her current facilities. The supply chain could not get much closer than that. She actually purchased the building after many years of begging the sellers, and the new shop in Albuquerque, NM, will offer all her CBD products plus more. Hemp clothing and free-trade items will be part of the offering, plus hydroponic equipment and other alternative type products along with clothing and cooking supplies.

“I’m really excited about 2019,” Sais said. “We’re coming out with about 10 new products and since the CBD world does not have the same FDA restrictions as vape, there is much more room for expansion.”

UNDERSTANDING CBD EXTRACTION

PROCESSES BY TODD RICHARD

Cannabidioal (CBD) is an extracted compound from the cannibis, or hemp, plant, known to have a slew of different health benefits. Digging around, you’ll find a few different CBD products that make all sorts of claims as to why theirs is the best, but most commonly referencing their extraction process as the reason to their

product’s superiority. This is for good reason, as a high yielding extraction process is crucial to any CBD product on the market, more so even than the base form of the plant. In other words, without a quality extraction method, the best hemp that ever existed won’t be worth the dirt in which it was grown.

29

FEATURES

Extraction – General

Why CO2?

Reducing the plant to its baser compounds is the general idea. There are several methods including olive oil extraction, dry ice extraction, and ethanol extraction. As interesting as most of these sound, they’re mostly home methods used for those individuals that grow their own. Most the time, you won’t see CBD products promoting these methods.

CO2 has been used in all sorts of food and beverage products over the years. The reason it’s so fantastic is because it behaves like a solvent without all the nasty byproducts. It’s often used because it doesn’t cause too much harm to the products themselves, but still can extract oils and other things like impurities. The reason it works so well is because of the high level of pressure, which is how we get it to behave like a solvent.

Unfortunately, the yield on these types of extraction isn’t very high, which in turn means for a manufacturer it’s not really worth the risk. If you ever see these methods used, it may be for the high oil it produces for foods or a local grower, otherwise they’re not usually promoted in the mainstream of CBD products at the disposal of typical consumers. There are a few benefits to these methods, but they can be dangerous, can spoil quickly, not to mention the possibility of messing up the entire process which wastes a whole lot of good CBD.

This is why the most common method utilized by large scale manufacturers is the CO2 extraction method. This method involves pressurized carbon dioxide (CO2) to “pull” out the CBD from the hemp plant. CO2 behaves like a solvent at certain temperatures and pressures, but without the risk of ruining the product. Sadly, it requires expensive equipment, something local growers can’t usually afford.

30

But how? The first part involves pressurizing and cooling the CO2. The CO2 is, by this process, turned into a liquid. From here the liquid CO2’s temperature is increased enough to turn it ‘Supercritical.’ It sounds cool but its really not, requiring over 1071 psi and nearly 88 degrees! In this state, it can act like a liquid with its density but also fill a pressurized container like a gas. This, is in large part, why CO2 extraction using this method is so expensive.

Next, the CO2 is passed through the hemp plant, typically of higher quality. What comes out are trichomes and terpene oils. Trichomes are the crystalline structures that naturally occur on cannabis plants, terpene on the other hand is a part of the plant that can bind to the endocannabinoid receptors in your body. More or less, terpene oil helps your body utilize all those wonderful bits of CBD you’ve just ingested, while the trichomes are rich in CBD.

CO2 extraction can also be used via “subcritical” extraction, which is literally cooler. The lower temperature and pressure allow the extractor to preserve more of the terpenes, but sadly doesn’t extract as much oil due to the lack of pressure. By itself, this isn’t that great, however, using this process, and following with the supercritical extraction allows for the most maximized yield. From here the process mostly involves purifying the extraction, and sometimes converted to isolates, which is a whole other process we won’t even get into here. CO2 extraction is the most common process used for any mainstream CBD product, and for good reason. The high yield of the process, the simplicity, efficiency and consistency of it simply makes the other methods obsolete so long as you can afford the equipment. If you’ve tried CBD, then more than likely this was how it was made. The home methods, unless your a grower, can be unsafe and can get messed up in the processing. Moreover, if there’s a company you’ve grown to use regularly it would be a good idea to check in on their website and find out exactly what processes they’re using, and whether or not they’re incorporating their terpenes.

Hawaiian native Chris Taloa is best known in homes across America as Drew, the leader of the ‘local crew’ in the movie Blue Crush. Growing up on Oahu’s North Shore, he is no stranger to aches and pains. As an ex-pro and expert at surfing Hawaii’s deadly breaks like pipeline, Chris knows better than anyone that “surfing beats the shit out of you some days!” Though still catching waves daily, Chris has put acting aside for a bigger purpose, channeling his heart and energy into his CBD company, Global CBD. How does one go from professional surfer to actor to CBD activist and company owner? For Chris, two major life events and one trippy dude from Maui shifted his perspective towards a wellness-based lifestyle. It began 12 years ago when Chris welcomed his first daughter into the world. “I don’t know, I just wanted to focus on being more holistic in my choices, like looking at water and air instead of gas and electricity. Or, maybe I was a cheap ass, but I had this gift now. Her name, Numia, in Hawaiian means divinity or deity, so I have to live up to the name I gave her and provide the best things in every way.”

In 2016, Chris received news that his close friend, legendary surfer Brock Little, was diagnosed with and eventually passed from liver cancer at the age of 48. Chris recalls, “Brock was my hero. Hero to a lot of us surfers. At the time, so many people I knew were getting cancer. It just made no sense.” According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Native Hawaiians, Samoans, and Pacific Islanders have the highest cancer rates in Hawaii. Global CBD came to fruition after a fateful run-in with his future partner, a man he describes as a “trippy hippie” living in a rough part of Maui. “The Polynesians liked him,” Taloa said. “So he was white, but he was Hawaiian in his spirit — by heart.” Recalling his first encounter with CBD, Chris laughed, “I told this guy you can’t sell this! It’s snake oil bro, Jesus juice. There is more THC in Trader Joe’s hemp cereal!” But after a few days of trying, Chris began to feel the benefits. “My joints just felt, I don’t know, better. My knees and my back too. I was blown away, and that was very early on in our oils.” Global CBD offers a special proprietary blend of cannabis/hemp hybrid called NEO, or Neurological Endocannabinoid Optimization Oil.

“Our oils are derived from a process that is ancient, tested and true. It’s not just a bottle full of nothing, it takes almost a year from production to final product. We use a cold press method for extraction, unlike most other CBD companies on the market. Our oils are never heated up during any part, so the THC is completely inactive. Our test results speak for themselves and they are readily available to anyone and everyone.” Many CBD users have reported that the non-psychoactive supplement has helped relieve seizures, reduced inflammation, eased anxiety, lowered blood pressure, and even induced cell death in certain cancers. “I give people assistance with oils with an infinite spectrum of potential,” Taloa said. “They give themselves the opportunity. The testimonials speak for themselves. And these people who we can help heal are my drive. I can’t do something if I don’t have my heart in it. My activism in driving CBD oils forward is in my chest, spoken from my heart.” Chris is unfazed by Hawaii’s cannabis politics. “I don’t give a fuck if the president’s son was dying, I would send him my oils. If a cop that was going to arrest me had a sick daughter, I’d give it to him. The healing properties from the Earth are a long part of the Hawaiian way.”

36

Part of island culture is that mainland trends take some time before reaching shore. Chris is trying to change that by putting Hawaii at the forefront of possibilities for the benefits of CBD. “Hawaii is always behind the rest of the country in fashion, music, pretty much anything. It comes to us last. But with Global CBD and #healinghawaiiannation, that’s going to change!”

TheVERSATILE

VARIETYOf

CBD Products BY TONY OTTOMANELLI II

CBD is much like any other industry. Yet, this is clearly an industry which is quite different as well—boasting an industrial landscape that is especially unprecedented in so many ways. To simply witness its initial launch and rapid growth has proven that CBD can be a major economic contributor and it is certainly a privilege to observe and analyze the elements involved.

38

When reflecting on how effective Cannabidiol (CBD) products could be for society as a whole, we must remind ourselves that everyone is different and each person’s genetic makeup will determine the effectiveness of specific products—largely depending on the strain of hemp the Cannabidiol was extracted from.

It would not be foolish to suggest that the CBD compound is so fascinating, complicated and simplistic all at the same time. Some products may not work for certain people, while other products may work perfectly fine for others. As noted, genetic compatibility is a major factor. In all, the CBD industry is quite young, yet it is also so contemporary that we must remain cognizant of the fact that we have not seen anything else much like it in past times. In regard to this, the CBD industry is growing fast and there are so many avenues it can venture, with countless avenues that have yet to be explored.

Vaping CBD Products Since the beginning of the CBD industry we have seen so many different options released that serve as a platform for convenience of choice, depending on consumer preference.

For example, there are CBD-based vape juices available for those who enjoy this type of process for administering the cannabidiol compound. As a matter of fact, many agree that this is the most effective method for your body to receive the full effects of cannabidiol. The vaporizing method has been considered by many as the strongest option for benefiting from instant effects offered by Cannabidiol. Furthermore, of all methods of ingesting CBD, many feel this allows their medical condition to receive relief the quickest—though, some may disagree.

39

FEATURES

Often times, it is suggested to pay close attention to the amount of CBD you are taking as the concept of micro dosing has become a widely accepted form of discovering what works best for you since it is such a personal matter dependent on genetics. This is largely due to the fact that your body has a relationship with specific strains of cannabis via the human body’s endocannabinoid system. It is absolutely critical to mention that cannabis is not just marijuana.

Cannabis can also be hemp and hemp is federally recognized as being entirely suitable for allowing states to decide on launching research or pilot programs for cultivating industrial hemp farms thanks to the 2014 Farm Bill. However, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell has promised that the 2018 Agricultural Act will federally legalize hemp cultivation for the entire country by the New Year.

Convenient CBD Options Altogether, there are other convenient options for those consumers who wish to not become limited to relying strictly on vapor product options. Some consumers prefer to use a topical product, requiring that they only need to use either oils, lotions, balms or creams that can be easily applied onto their skin.

However, for lots of people, this option may not allow them to experience the full effect of the therapeutic relief offered by CBD. At the same time, there are some people where this particular option is the only way for them to experience the full effect.

40

From this topical approach, numerous companies are launching brands with products ranging from soaps and shampoos, to deodorants or even lip balm and anything that can be placed on top of the skin.

Due to this trend in the industry, we are beginning to see many more health and beauty products venturing into the CBD realm. In the very near future, consumers should expect to witness the rise of Cannabidiol in the health and beauty industry, ultimately becoming an extremely popular business strategy causing such products to be more prevalent at local stores. Not to mention, there are a large quantity of consumers that find great benefit in using tincture products for administering CBD. This simply consists of using a dropper and dipping into a bottle of fresh CBD oil, placing it under your tongue, dripping a few drops underneath and waiting for the main vein to absorb the CBD compound, allowing it to directly enter your bloodstream.

In addition, there has even been a successful launch of CBD infused water brands where people can receive the therapeutic relief offered from Cannabidiol simply by drinking a bottle of water. Or, perhaps you prefer to eat a snack? No worries. The CBD industry’s top brands have dramatically expanded their edibles options. For the most popular edible thus far, that category has been specifically dominated by the customer-preference of consuming gummy candies infused with Cannabidiol.

The Big Picture When it comes to the versatility of CBD products, there is a widespread opportunity for brands to expand and an infinite variety of consumer goods for customers to choose from. Basically, there is something for everyone. The best part is that the top CBD businesses understand that it all begins and ends with satisfying the consumer.

Lastly, if you are a pet owner, there are a number of brands being developed that are incorporating CBD products solely for animal consumption. Or, some of the established brands already have existing products that can be given to house pets. The options are quite diverse for consumers to choose from if your pet can benefit from the therapeutic relief offered by Cannabidiol. From specialty treats or CBD oils that can be applied to pet food, so many more selections are now becoming available and will only grow to be more abundant as time passes.

Considering this, it is crucial to remember that CBD products that are manufactured for human consumption should never be given to your pets. As a friendly reminder, when giving your pets CBD products, they must be specifically made for animal ingestion. Essentially, at this point, we could assume that many brands from within the industry are hoping to help rejuvenate ineffective and outdated wellness strategies. By developing and offering as many of these endless CBD product options, as long as their brand is legally able to, consumers can finally experience the relief they’ve been seeking.

The Emergence

Of CBD In The Modern

Nootropics Industry BY TONY OTTOMANELLI II

During the 21st century, we are experiencing the emergence of a technological revolution with the thriving of automation, 3D printing, cryptocurrency, autonomous transportation, nanotechnology, quantum computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Among the many modern emerging industries we are also witnessing the development of several advancements that are in the realm of consumer goods— products for human consumption. The Cannabidiol compound known as CBD has been one of the prime ingredients in this rising sector of consumer goods. In addition, another industry in particular has been developing a number of fascinating theoretical concepts combined with proven research to create specific supplements used for cognitive enhancement. This industry is manufacturing supplements that are referred to as “Nootropics.”

42

NOOTROPICS DEFINED The word “Nootropics” is basically considered as an umbrella term for some naturally-occurring and/or man-made classes of chemicals that have potential to provide cognitive advantages to the human brain. Overall, the man who coined the term “Nootropic,” Dr. Corneliu E. Giurgea, has determined how a substance must meet five criteria in order to be classified as a “Nootropic.” The five standards are as follows:

1) Enhance memory and the ability to learn 2) Assist with brain function, especially under disruptive conditions

3) Protect the brain from chemical interference and physical assaults 4) Increase the efficacy of neuronal firing control mechanisms in regions of the brain 5) Possess few or no side effects and be virtually nontoxic Considering this, any substance that matches up to meet all 5 of these standards could essentially be viewed as a “miracle drug.” After all, Nootropics have gained a lot of attention after the release of a 2011 Hollywood Film starring Bradley Cooper.

...CBD is

so much more than just a cognitive enhancer. 44

The Rise Of Nootropics The movie was titled Limitless and had a plot that dealt with revealing how a secret smart pill gave an aspiring writer the ability to enhance the full potential of the human mind—offering an unparalleled advantage to accomplishing career goals and reaching powerful ambitions. Regardless, with the theatrical arts aside, Silicon Valley has taken notice of this fictional film plot as a likely possibility within reality and so the investments into this industry have grown immensely. As a matter of fact, Nootropics are often referred to as “smart pills/drugs.” However, not all Nootropics tend to correspond with all five stipulations outlined above. Nevertheless, as long as a substance can be used as a cognitive enhancer—allowing a person to advance their way of thinking in some way or improve memory with a faster speed of processing, increased concentration or a combination of all these then it is a Nootropic. From this, there are countless substances now being classified as Nootropics. From well-known stimulants like caffeine and nicotine to everyday vitamins such as Vitamin B and Vitamin D. In addition, a number of natural supplements are also being categorized under the Nootropic umbrella—for example, zinc, magnesium and ginseng.

The Relationship Between Nootropics and Cannabidiol These particular outcomes seem to fall in line with many of the positive effects offered by CBD. Cannabidiol has been considered a neuroprotectant, anti-aging, antibacterial, vasorelaxant, anxiety reliever, antioxidant and antidepressant. The Cannabidiol compound is found in the cannabis sativa-L plant species, with especially high percentages in hemp. CBD is a non-psychotropic chemical, meaning it doesn’t alter the human consciousness in a way that allows the possibility of feeling a “high” sensation. At the same time, Cannabidiol (CBD) is more complex than most nootropics and not nearly as simplistic. Thus, CBD is so much more than just a cognitive enhancer. The brain is not the only area of the body CBD can treat. CBD reduces inflammation, promotes bone growth, reduces blood sugar levels, reduces risk of nerve damage, reduces small intestine contractions, reduces risk of artery blockage, relieves pain, eases nausea and suppresses muscle spasms. Not to mention, is some cases, CBD has been known to inhibit cancer cell growth.

Therefore, countless consumer testimonials have revealed how CBD has proven to be highly effective for treating common yet difficult medical problems, Not to mention, many other chemicals that such as epilepsy, psoriasis, glaucoma, are otherwise somewhat unrecognizable asthma, depression and narcolepsy. to those who may be unfamiliar with the supplement industry include, DMAE, The Endocannabinoid System regulates GABA, DHEA, NADH and PQQ are also a variety of biological processes like members of the nootropics family. relaxation, eating, sleeping, information responses, cognitive function and overall At the same time, there are other more homeostasis. Endocannabinoids and their well-known substances categorized as a receptors are found throughout the body. Nootropic, like the widely used supplement There are two main receptors CB1 and of Creatine. This compound is typically CB2, on cells throughout the body—unlike used by athletes for increasing muscle THC, CBD does not directly bind to the endurance. However, it can also assist CB1 and CB2 receptors. with providing a memory boost, brain fatigue reduction, mood improvement, while additionally being considered an agent for anti-aging and a reliable neuroprotectant.

CBD suppresses the breakdown of Anandamide, a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in the body that is responsible for activating the CB1 and CB2 receptors, which triggers the body’s protective endocannabinoid response. When CBD oil is ingested, these receptors are activated. CB1 receptors are mostly populated in the brain and central nervous system. CB2 receptors are mostly centralized in peripheral organs, especially cells associated with the immune system. All in all, due to the positive effects CBD has on the human brain, there are strong indications as to why it can classified as a Nootropic. Nevertheless, we may be seeing an incremental increase of products consisting of a number of specific nootropic substances combined with the CBD compound. Is this something we might see the Nootropics Industry take advantage of? Or is this a scenario in which we’ll become witness to a Nootropics brand and the CBD Industry working together? Well, as of current, there is one particularly innovative cannabis company collaborating with a forward-thinking Nootropics enterprise. The resulting product will be the first in the world to combine cannabis infusion with nootropic supplements that enhance the consumer’s mental sharpness. Check back in the coming Issues of the magazine for a story that dives further into discussing the first CBD infused Nootropic and the companies involved with developing it.

TEXAS & CBD LEGALITY BY JOHN CASTLE

There’s no denying the massive, radical shift CBD has brought to the market. Equally undeniable is the fact that the legality of CBD can vary wildly from state to state, and even from county to county within a single state. Despite the passage of H.R. 2 in December of last year, CBD remains a controlled substance in the Lone Star State.

47

FEATURES

The cloudy nature of CBD legality rests on the fact that, despite its newfound legality at the Federal level, states retain the right to schedule hemp at the state level. What’s legal in California, Nevada, or New York might or might not be legal in Texas — and vice versa. The problem is further complicated by the fact that even within the state of Texas, enforcement isn’t consistent from one county to another. Tarrant County has issued a warning that the purchase and possession of certain CBD products could result in consumers facing felony drug possession charges. Larry Moore, criminal division chief for the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office, went on record saying about CBD, “It’s illegal. And until the legislature changes that, it’s going to continue to be illegal.” Other Texas prosecutors, however, are not taking so hardline a position. Some reportedly went on record with NBC 5 Investigates saying that they would not aggressively pursue cases where the only substance found in a consumer’s possession is CBD. Still others reportedly have yet to take a position of any kind with regard to CBD product possession. Texas’s Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office has not made a statement on CBD legality in the state. As tough as the CBD legality situation in Tarrant County is, though, it may be on its way to easing, at least slightly. Texas State Representative Stephanie Klick (R-District 91) has already authored “compassionate use” legislation to open three CBD dispensaries within the state where patients suffering from severe epilepsy can purchase CBD products prescribed by a medical practitioner. Representative Klick’s support for CBD is not unqualified, however. Stressing lab testing to ensure that CBD products aren’t mislabeled or adulterated, she said, “The buyers really should beware because they really currently do not know what these products contain.” Pharmacist and CBD shop owner Dallas businessman Emile Abdo agrees with Klick about the necessity for quality assurance and truth in labeling, commenting that, “there’s a lot of products out there that are mislabeled.” He insists, however, that access to high quality, accurately labeled CBD products is strongly needed, particularly now. “As a pharmacist, and being on the front lines of the opioid epidemic, I think it’s

important for us to be able to provide different therapies that aren’t addictive.” What the future holds for CBD legality in Texas is tough to predict. What has been seen so far, however, is that after H.R. 2 was signed into law, at least one state — the state of Alabama — quickly aligned their position to that of the new Federal law. If Texas Representative Klick continues in her efforts, it’s not impossible that the State of Texas may do likewise. As it stands today, the non profit National Hemp Association reminds Texas consumers that CBD products remain technically illegal, even if some prosecutors aren’t inclined to throw the book at those found in possession of such products. BY ANGELA GARRITY

CBD BATH BOMBS ARE MAKING A BIG SPLASH IN THE BEAUTY, HEALTH AND WELLNESS WORLD. It’s no secret that people are spread thinner these days than ever before and that downtime for us is critical for complete relaxation and total body wellness. A CBD bath bomb might just be the “fix” for this. Imagine a nice, hot bath to relax the day away. Adding a CBD bath bomb to this experience can add to decreased muscle tension, complete relaxation and complete mental bliss – all without a high.

Epsom salt and CBD work conjunctively together in bath bomb form. Epsom salt pulls out toxins from the body and restores balance in areas such as weight/appetite management, sore muscles, mood stabilization and overall health improvement. CBD overlaps in these areas, as well, which is a definite win-win.

CBD products applied to the skin are ideal for anti-aging, wrinkle reduction, antioxidant effects, as well as eczema, psoriasis, acne and blackhead treatments.

When selecting a bath bomb, choosing the right essential oil is also important to reap the desired benefit. Lavender is ideal for relaxation and serenity, peppermint for nausea relief, eucalyptus oil for breathing and immunity, clove oil for arthritis, grapefruit for metabolism support and shedding cellulite, frankincense for building immunity, cypress improves circulation and ginger as a digestive aid.

IN ADDITION TO ALL THESE SKIN BENEFITS, CBD BATH BOMBS WILL NOT IRRITATE THE SKIN AND MOISTURIZES IT. THE COMBINATION OF EPSOM SALT, VARIOUS ESSENTIAL OILS AND CBD AIDS IN REJUVENATED SKIN. Humidity is your friend and also carries its own benefits. The warm mist is beneficial to the throat and lungs and acts as the conduit from which essential oils and CBD travel to the body through. In this case, please sweat the small stuff. Release those toxins and take in the benefits coming directly into a body near you. If the idea of total body submerging in a tub isn’t your cup of tea, a smaller size bath bomb could be an option for a relaxing foot soak.

IT IS BEST TO USE A BATH BOMB AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. IF IT NEEDS TO BE STORED, KEEP IT IN COOL, DRY PLACE AWAY FROM MOISTURE (NOT A BATHROOM OR A FREEZER), PREFERABLY IN AN AIR TIGHT ZIPLOCK BAG OR AIRTIGHT CONTAINER.
