Group Editorial Why did Nativism increase in the 1920’s, and what consequences did this have on America? Our country is a melting pot. A beautiful bowl of different people, cultures, languages and religious beliefs. America has always valued immigration. This should not change just because more people are moving to the United States than ever before. The positive consequences of immigration should always outweigh the negative. Unfortunately, immigration has brought out the worst in some Americans. Nativists are people who believe they are the only true Americans. They want to limit the rights of immigrants and stop the influx of people moving to the United States. Nativism has increased because of the large amount of immigrants coming to America. There has always been the belief that immigrants steal jobs and crowd our cities. This is simply just not true. These misbeliefs began because of Nativists who didn’t want immigrants moving to our cities. And, Americans believe this. America first? There is no such thing.

the new technologies that cities have to offer. Immigrants shouldn’t be blamed for overcrowding in the cities. Immigrants should be welcomed to America not shut out. Americans think that immigrants are only coming to take jobs and crowd cities. But, immigrants are actually bringing new ideas for businesses into our cities. They are bringing in new cultures and traditions that Americans didn't have before. The culture and beliefs of Americans are forming one unique American experience. Everyone should learn to accept differences. Everyone coming to America should have an opportunity to work and own a house. Immigrants shouldn’t be kept out of America just because they have different beliefs and cultures than the native-born. Think about the need for immigrants the next time nativists start talking crazy.

Our cities are not crowded because of immigrants. Our cities are crowded because of more people moving from rural areas to urban areas. All Americans want to take advantage of 3

Immigrants coming to the U.S Who are the immigrants coming to the U.S in the 1920s and are their values good or bad for America? By:Kaitlyn Hodges Who are the immigrants coming to the United States? Immigrants came from many different places. They came for specific reasons too. We are going to be looking at Where the immigrants came from, Why are they coming, How immigrants are different, and examples of how Americans thought negatively of the immigrants. Where are the immigrants coming from? Most Immigrants were coming from Europe. Specifically Southern, Eastern, and Northern Europe, and a few from immigrants from Italy. About 600,000 immigrants from Italy came to the United States. By 1920, almost 4 million immigrants came to the United States. Immigrants didn’t just come from these places, but this is where most of them came from. Why are immigrants coming to the United States? Immigrants were coming to America because they wanted better jobs to get better pay. They also came because of the new technology that the U.S had. These two things are pull factors. A pull factor is something that wants to make you come to a place. A push factor is something that wants to make you leave a place. Because of these reasons you could probably guess that the immigrants liked to settle in cities, or near Ellis island if they don’t

want to go far. An example of a push factor is poverty. How are immigrants different? Southern and Eastern Europeans were unskilled, ignorant, mainly Catholic or Jewish. Older immigrants were more skilled, thrifty, and hardworking. Immigrants can vary in different ways. What are some examples of how Americans reacted negatively to immigrants? Americans thought that immigrants were going to steal their jobs from them. They thought this because they knew that immigrants were coming mostly because of that reason. Americans also didn’t want immigrants to come because immigrants brought bad ideas to the U.S. including them bringing their new cultures that we didn’t know.

Klu Klux Klan How has the fear of new immigrants inspired the rise of the power of the KKK? By: Abby Erb How did Immigrants cause the Klu Klux Klan (KKK) to form? Immigrants were bringing change to America by forcing new ideals and religious beliefs to the American people. The KKK was made by the Americans in response to enforce their values to stop change. The KKK forced other races and religions to conform or suffer. This is how America became what it is today. The KKK believed that they were the only true idea of what America should be. When immigrants came to America, nativist would fight to keep other ethnic groups out of the U.S. The KKK became powerful in the eastern coast of America. Nativist would use the slang word “Brutes” when talking about immigrants meaning they were violent. The KKK began to rise quickly, growing with many people in the group. They grew tremendously. Around 1866, the Klan started a secret organization having as low as 3 million Klansmen to 8 million Klansmen. For each member who joined the Klan, they had to recruit 10 people to vote for the Klan candidates. The middle class people helped donate white robes for the KKK. The group became so big that they spread across the country getting to Missouri where LeRoy Percy, the senator, didn’t let the KKK come into town.

The KKK targeted blacks, Jews and Catholics. Blacks had to deal with a lot of discrimination. Blacks also had to face race riots leading to lynchings. Most Americans didn’t accept Jews. Due to Jewish beliefs, Americans limited Jews on what they could do. Americans targeted Catholics because they thought their belief would threaten the nation. It took 30 years before the Catholics would be fully accepted. The Klan played a big role in shaping America into what it is today. The negative treatment of minority races, such as Jews and Blacks, is what the Klan is known for. Since becoming a group in the 19th century, the Klan has only grown in numbers. Where as their activities have deviated from lynchings during the times of Jim Crow laws, they are still an active group. Unfortunately, some of the Klan’s views are seen in the political world today, which is just more of an example of the impact they’ve had on America.

Immigration Quota Is the new immigrants quota law (1921) good or bad for America? By: Laina Davies

Why are Americans closing the door on immigration? The large number of immigrants coming to the U.S. are changing Americans opinions on immigration. The immigrants that live in the U.S. considered themself as German American, Italian American, etc. However they are very patriotic towards America. Many Americans think immigrants aren’t fully loyal and they only want people who are fully loyal to live in America. The Immigration Quota Law made it so only 3% of a country's residence could come to the U.S. each year. It capped the number of people coming into the U.S. at 375,000 each year. This law was meant to be temporary. Three years later, Congress passed the Immigration Act of 1924. The act now only allowed 164,000 immigrants into the U.S. per year. It also cut the percent from 3% of a country’s residence to 2% of a country’s residence. In 1890, most immigrants came from the northern part of Europe. The act severely reduced immigration from eastern and southern Europe.

At the end of the decade immigration was only a quarter of what it was in 1921. Many nativists still didn’t like the number of people coming into the U.S. every year and wanted it lower. In 1929, the nativists persuaded congress to lower the number of immigrants that could come to the U.S. at 150,000 each year. Immigrants are what made and shaped America. Many Americans feared immigrants, whether is was because they thought they might come to take their jobs, share different ideas or carry over diseases. Americans shouldn’t want to keep them out because all of them came from immigrants at some point. Immigrants were the ones that made America the way it is.

Nativism Who are the nativists, and are their goals good or bad for America? By: Ketshia Lubanda Who are the nativists, and are their goals good or bad for America? Nativists are people who believed that they were the true Native Americans. They creating political parties and trying to limit the right of immigration. Many immigrants are coming to America for job opportunities and better lives. Nativists said that immigration is leading to many problems in the country, like increase of crime, overcrowding, more pollution, and new diseases. It is weakening the American way of living, as immigrants don't know the language and have different customs, religions, and traditions.

population due to the low birth rate among natives. They are scared of people from different backgrounds. They want to live in America for themselves. Their goals are bad for America , because in order to trade and learn about different cultures, traditions, and customs we need to corporate with other countries and allow different people from different background to come to America. Overall, everybody is minding their own business and immigrants are living their lives. Even though some people still hate immigrants, it doesn’t hurt us at all.

Most immigrants came from Europe and Asia. Those who came from Europe came through east coast facilities, and those from Asia entered through west coast centers. As American men wanted to help their families, they accepted to work in low paying jobs. Work became increasingly diskilled and they couldn't replace any one in the jobs. Many native born Americans were unfriendly to immigrants during the nineteenth century because of the job competitions. The nativists wants to prevent cultural change. They have a feeling that immigrants will increase in
