New Pound! Fun facts about the new £1 coin The new 12-sided £1 coin will finally be here on 28 March. It's the first time the pound coin has been changed in more than 30 years. The old coin became a problem as they were easily illegally copied. So what's so great about the new coin? It’s got 12 sides. It’s made of two different coloured metals. It’s been designed to make it very difficult to make fake coins. The new design includes the four countries that make up the UK: ● ● ● ● It was designed by David Pearce, a 15 year old schoolboy from Walsall who won a competition. By the end of 2017 1.5 billion of the new coins will have been made. October the 15th of this year is the last day you will be able to use the old style pound coins.

Don't worry! You can swap your old pound coins at the bank for new ones.

Our favourite Michael Morpurgo books…. n a cosy den under a garden shed lives a family of foxes. They love to watch football – all foxes do. But their favourite team keeps losing and losing, and it seems like things will never look up. That is, until Daddy Fox finds the ghost of a king, buried underneath a car park. A king who wishes only to be free. “Release me,” says the Ghost King, “and I can do anything. Just tell me your greatest wish.” For these football-loving foxes, might everything be about to change…? Kaspar the cat first came to the Savoy Hotel in a basket - Johnny Trott knows, because he was the one who carried him in. Johnny was a bell-boy, you see, and he carried all of Countess Kandinsky’s things to her room. But Johnny didn’t expect to end up with Kaspar on his hands forever, and nor did he count on making friends with Lizziebeth, a spirited American heiress. Pretty soon, events are set in motion that will take Johnny - and Kaspar - all around the world, surviving theft, shipwreck and rooftop rescues along the way. Because everything changes with a cat like Kaspar around. After all, he’s Prince Kaspar Kandinsky, Prince of Cats, a Muscovite, a Londoner and a New Yorker, and as far as anyone knows, the only cat to survive the sinking of the Titanic... It all began with a necklace, made of glistening pink cowrie shells. A long, long necklace that had taken Cherry days – weeks – of careful, painstaking work. It was nearly complete, and Cherry was determined it would be the longest necklace she had ever made; that it would be fit for a giant! But the end of the holidays had arrived. "You've only got today, Cherry," said her mother. "Just today, that's all." Cherry didn't mind, a day would be enough – she only needed a few more shells. So, amidst the taunts of her older brothers, she set out to search for them. Then the clouds grew dark and the waves grew large, and as the storm blew in, Cherry realized, to her horror, that she was cut off from the shore. From then on, events began to take a decidedly dark turn. One from which there was no turning back

All About Eggs 1 egg (hard boiled is less messy if you accidentally break it, but you can use a raw one) 1 cup vinegar

Pour 1 cup of vinegar into jar Add the egg Record what you see (bubbles rising from the egg) Leave the egg in the vinegar for one day. Remove the egg and feel it.

Eggs contain something called "calcium carbonate". This is what makes them hard. Vinegar is an acid known as acetic acid. When calcium carbonate (the egg) and acetic acid (the vinegar) combine, a chemical reaction takes place and carbon dioxide (a gas) is released. This is what the bubbles are made of.

Spot the difference Can you find them all?

We need reporters from both Key stage 3 and Key stage 4 to help Mrs Norman produce the next edition of the Southall magazine. Your job will be to report and take photographs of events in the school and interview visitors.

To apply for the job as reporter , ask your teacher for an application form.

Once you have completed the form and made sure that all the details are filled in and it has your full name, post the form in mrs Norman’s post box.

Once the application forms have all been looked at , the final few will be interviewed to see who will be Southalls team of reporters.

GOOD LUCK!

Mrs N

If you have any ideas or stories that you think would be good to feature in the next issues of S3 and S4 come and have a chat to Mrs Norman.
