What is the difference between abstract art and modern or contemporary art? The term "contemporary" describes any work of art that is currently produced, whereas the abstract term refers completely to a particular painting design. Abstract art is not classified in a particular period, and that is the fundamental difference. First of all, abstract artists were inspired by cubism, expressionism and surrealism. The beauty of this art style is increasingly appreciated today. Modern art came before contemporary art[1]. Most art historians and critics put the beginning of modern art in the West at around the 1860s, continuing up to the 1960s. Whereas, contemporary art means art made in the present day.
