Welcome to 2010

Skyline spartan football I would like to welcome all of you to another exciting season of football for the Skyline Spartans. Once again we anticipate another successful season for the Spartans and the challenge for these coaches and young men to continue the tradition of excellence is one of dedication, hard work and discipline on and off the field. The commitment by these young men since December of 2009 has been unbelievable and our off season weight training program has grown to over 100 athletes.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire Skyline football community for the tremendous support the give our program: Skyline High School Administration and Staff, Skyline High School Booster Club, and the Skyline Cheerleaders. I would like to give a special thanks to the Skyline Gridiron Club and the Skyline Youth Football Association for their remarkable and assistance in helping develop the first ever Skyline Football BBQ which incorporated the High School and Youth Program. It was an incredible success and it was great to see all of the players and coaches that have dedicated themselves to this great team sport.

The Skyline Gridiron Club has provided countless hours of support to each individual athlete through fundraising and taking the initiative to ensure that whatever is needed is secured. The Skyline Youth Football Association provides young players with a positive experience where they can develop a love for the game of football as well as proper fundamentals and technique.

More importantly SYFA has become a true feeder program to help continue the winning tradition at Skyline.

Mat Taylor, Head Football Coach Coach Taylor, in his 13th year on the coaching staff at Skyline, is back to lead the Spartans for his third season. His focus is on making the football experience the best it can be for the players, as well as making sure they give back to the community. He leads an extraordinary group of coaches that also have experience and great values to share both on and off the field. Coach Taylor teaches special education and PE at Skyline.

In order to meet these goals, these young men need to continue with the Skyline tradition to take it one game at a time and to continue to improve week by week. The Skyline football team looks forward to another exciting season and we believe with the commitment and dedication of this 2010 football team will provide the entire Skyline community and its fans with another championship season. Varsity coaches BRETT VAN VOORHIS — Defensive Coordinator & Safeties Coach Van Voorhis returns for his 2nd season with the Spartans and is filling the role of Defensive Coordinator in the absence of Coach Chmiel. He is known for his intensity during practice and the games and usually can be heard, even over crowd noise.

He credit his father, Paul and Coach Chmiel for providing encouragement over the years. Coach Van Voorhis and his wife Stephanie live in Bothell and he is a design engineer for Kenworth Truck.

STEVE CHMIEL— Defensive Coordinator Coach Chmiel brings over 18 years of experience with him in his 2nd season with the Spartans, Last season his new defensive scheme worked well. He became a high school coach because his own experience as a high school player wasn’t very positive. He learned to play hockey at the age of 3 and still enjoys it. His wife Lori and son Mathias welcome twin daughters, Elli and Emma to their family this year. Coach Chmiel works for Microsoft.

TOM COLLINS — Offensive Line Coach Coach Collins now works with the offensive line. During his tenure as a high school coach, he coached 18 years at district rival, Issaquah, where he also played offensive line and linebacker. At most games, his sons TJ and Chad are cheering from the sidelines. And in the stands, sit many families who know Tom from their youth football experience in the community.

His commitment and support of youth is also evident in his work as an education assistant with special needs kids. In a previous season, Coach Collins was chosen King Co Assistant Coach of Year.

JEFF JOHNSON—Defensive Line & Tight Ends In his 2nd year with Skyline, Coach Johnson brings 15 years of helping high school athletes. He is committed to helping the younger players learn and motivates the starters to excel. His wife Kelley and son Caleb are often seen wandering the sidelines at games or practices. He works at Microsoft and enjoys fly fisherman.

BRUCE HASSON—Running Backs, Linebackers, Special Teams Coach Hasson has been working with Spartan for 13 seasons, including varsity, JV and freshman. There is lots of excitement under his direction on both sides of the ball. His wife Kim is usually in the stands at games, along with his daughters Kendahl and Jessica, son-in-law Marvin and two grandchildren Payton and Kason. You’ll also see his son Aaron on the sidelines, as he is on the Skyline coaching staff also.

RYAN THORSEN - Defensive Backs Coach Thorsen, in his 9th year of coaching at Skyline, relates well with the players. He played the position he now coaches, helping the 2000 championship team bring home the first state trophy. He also is seen on Friday nights next to Coach Taylor signaling in the offensive plays. In 2011, he will marry his girlfriend Alia, making his parents, Pam and Steve, very excited. Coach Thorsen works for The Pro Club in Bellevue.

KYLE SNELL—Wide Receivers Coach Snell joined the Varsity staff in 2008, so this is his 3rd year back with the Spartans. As a Skyline alumni (2000 state championship team), he knows what it means to be committed to success and pushes his players to excel. Another Spartan wedding is being planned in 2011 with Coach Snell and his fiancée Holly will tie the knot. Coach Snell joined the teaching staff at Skyline this year, transferring from Beaver Lake Middle School.

SEAN HIGUCHI Head Freshman Coach Coach Higuchi leads the Sophomore players in his 7th year with the Spartans. His playing experience at Maui High School, and his previous leadership of the Freshman team helps advance the players every season. You’ll see him on the sidelines on Friday nights too where helps the Varsity offensive— defensive lines. Coach Higuchi and his wife Katie enjoy time with their dog, Lucy when he’s not working as a personal trainer in Snoqualmie Ridge.

NATHANIEL WILLINGHAM

ANDREW TAYLOR Offensive Coordinator

EVAN FLAY Assistant Coach

After graduating from Skyline in 2007, where he helped bring home the 3A trophy, Coach Willingham is an asset on the coaching staff. In his 3rd season with Skyline, he is anxious to help with another successful season, while concluding his education at Bellevue College.

His plans to transfer to his parent’s Alma Mater—Michigan State to continue his education and coaching career. You could say that he was born a Spartan!

Younger brother of our Skyline head coach, Coach Taylor easily can help prepare these players for a future under Friday Night Lights.

He was part of the 2000 Spartan State Championship team, and returns in his 3rd year at Skyline.

When his parents, John and Aletha are at a Varsity game, they watch both of their sons help bring home the wins! Coach Taylor works at Trader Joes.

In his 2nd year assisting, Coach Flay has playing experience on the 2005 championship team. And now helping on the sidelines, he has been there when we brought home two more trophies. Giving back to his community through helping the team, he works as an independent writer at web based Seattle HS Football Examiner.

Offensive/Defensive Line

FRESHMAN coaches

ZACK MEYERS SHAWN HUSMANN AARON HASSON Head Freshman Coach Offensive-Defensive Line QB’s—Defensive Backs Coach Husmann took over the rains of leading the Freshman team after joining the Skyline coaching staff last season. He has coached at other area schools and played quarterback during high school. His wife Carol and daughter Alara are looking forward to moving into their new home. Coach Husmann owns Massage Envy in Renton.

The newest member of the Skyline coaching staff is Spartan alumni player Coach Meyers. During his time away, he could be seen coming back to watch his brother John, who was a captain in 2006. Coach Myers manages his family business, which allows him the time to commit to the program. Married this year, his wife, Michelle can be seen watching from the sidelines.

Coach Hasson knows his way around Spartan stadium, where he played quarterback for Skyline. He also played in college before returning to help his alumni school. In addition to helping the players, Coach Hasson has the added gift of coaching along side his dad, Bruce.

LOU deVita Assistant Coach Coach deVita is no stranger to high school football, having played in both high school and college. In his 3rd year with Skyline, many of the players also know him because his son Jon wears #5 on the Varsity squad this season. Wife Tami can be seen helping around the team, while chasing son Bret and helping Bryn with girl’s basketball.

2nd annual Skills & Drills on the Hill

Sunny weather and competitive spirits were on hand in June, when the Skyline Gridiron Club and Skyline Spartan Football hosted a two-day event, where athletes from 22 Washington high schools converged on Sammamish to begin their 2010 summer activities.

Over 700 athletes and coaches signed up to participate in the 7 on 7 Passing Contest, Linemen’s Challenge and Kicking Competition.

Dozens of Spartan parents and fans helped to feed the masses and support all aspects of this tournament. Hundreds of community members watched while the footballs were kicked over the goal posts, linemen tugged ropes, tossed tires, pushed a Ford 250 truck and quarterbacks, receivers and defenders worked on patterns and plays that will carry them against their opponents this fall.

Skyline youth football The Skyline Youth Football Association (SYFA) has a relatively short

history, having been founded in 1998. SYFA competes in the Greater Eastside Junior Football Association which was formed in 1963 with the mission of providing an organized little league football program for kids ages 8- 14 on the Eastside.

The GEJFA systems today are aligned with the 3A and 4A KingCo High Schools- which consistently field the most competitive teams in all of Washington High School sports. GEJFA mission is very simple- Have fun first and worry about winning second! Success has been measured by the number of players in the system, and in turn the number of those players that return to play again and go on to compete for their High School.

By these measure, SYFA has excelled as a program! For five straight years, SYFA has led the 16 system league in both the number of kids participating and the total number of teams. Equally as important, the number of players that turn out as freshman for the High School program has been among the top for any of the KingCo Schools. Since his arrival as Head Coach, Mat Taylor has worked to make the youth program a true feeder program for the high school. Many of the current and past Varsity players have come up through the SYFA system and consider themselves part of the Spartan family from the first time they put on the pads, until they graduate from Skyline High School. As a board and system, we are very proud of this tradition and the results we have all enjoyed!

Kids, players, coaches together One of the great activities in summer is the Future Champs Football Camp, hosted by Coach Mat Taylor. High school players and coaches teach fundamentals to participating Sammamish youth players… and they just hang out and have fun as part of our football family. It’s one big SpartaNation!

From the desk of lisa hechtman, principal The Boys of Fall . . .Friday Night Lights . . .Gridiron Classics . . .you can feel the pride, the honor, the attitude—how could you not be a fan of Spartan Football?! Friday Nights is our opportunity to support not only our football athletes, but also the cheerleaders, the band, our student fans, and the dedicated coaches. These are a few representatives of the over 500 fall student-athletes and the approximate 85%of our student body who participate in extra-curricular activities. Football games are one of the times we gather as a community to recognize that success is neither magical nor mysterious, but the natural consequence of consistently applying fundamentals (Jim Rohn). The Spartans do exactly that: focus on daily practice, individual discipline, positive attitudes, inherent integrity. As a result, we have enjoyed multiple years of success and multiple state titles.
