I would like to welcome all of you to another exciting season of football for the Skyline Spartans.

Throughout the past 10 months these young men and coaches have put in countless hours preparing for the highly anticipated 2008 football season.

First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire Skyline football community for the tremendous support they give our program: Skyline High School Administration and Staff, Skyline High School Booster Club, Cheryl Reed and the Skyline High School Sports Medicine Program, and Skyline Cheerleaders. Lastly I would like to give a special thanks to the Skyline Gridiron Club and the Skyline Youth Football Association. The Skyline Gridiron Club has provided immeasurable support to the individual athletes and the overall program since 2001. It’s unique formula of leadership from alumni football families assists with continuity and helps focus efforts on the development of the program of the future, as well as in the current season. It’s success is unique, unmatched and unseen in most communities. The Skyline Youth Football Association has grown into the biggest youth football association in the state and provides quality coaching to these young athletes, but more importantly has become a great feeder program that will help continue the winning tradition here at Skyline.

The 2008 season began with a first for the Skyline football program as we travel out of state to Oregon to compete in the Les Schwab Best of the West against nationally ranked and defending 6A Oregon State Champion Sheldon High School of Eugene. This game was a tremendous motivator for the athletes as they worked extremely hard and dedicated hours in the weight room with Kevin Chiles and Chiles Sports Development. Also, we dedicated much of our spring and summer with football camps, competing in 7 on 7 tournaments, and concluding our summer attending the annual team camp at the University of Puget Sound. Then, it is on to again competing in the daunting new KingCo 4A league which has produced a team in the state championship game every year since 2003.

In order to meet these goals, these young men need to continue with the Skyline tradition to take it one game at a time and to continue to improve week by week. The Skyline football team looks forward to another exciting season and we believe with the commitment and dedication of this 2008 football team will provide the entire Skyline community and its fans with another championship season. Coach Ogata focuses his attentions on working with the quarterbacks. He also works with the JV team. His football experience includes playing for both Mercer Island and Santa Clara University as a receiver. He was a three sport athlete in high school and coaches MI basketball and girls tennis.

Coach Taylor is one of five Spartan alumni players who are part of the coaching staff at Skyline this year.

Coach Willingham knows so well the Spartan program. As a Captain on the 2007 3A State Championship

He was one of the core receivers of the program, starting as a sophomore in 1998 on the varsity team. Coach Taylor started his football coaching experience at Lynden High School, where he also coached track.

Skyline Coach since 2005 Coach Lombardo is working as the defensive coordinator, and working with defensive backs and receivers this season.

Coach Higuchi works as the offensive coordinator and with the offensive and defensive line.

Coach Higuchi was all league at Maui High School and currently works at Columbia Athletic Club. He lives with his wife, Katie, in Issaquah. He focuses his coaching efforts on: teaching the Spartan system, having fun, and winning.

He received his degree at Central WA University and is currently working as a teacher in the Issaquah School District. He played football at Newport High School.

Along with his wife, Leslie, he keeps track of his kids, Tyler and Camryn.

He was named 2nd team KingCo quarterback for his efforts. He went on to play QB two years at Mesa State College. Sports provides opportunities that enhance the high school experience and develop school pride. Athletics also assist students with developing life and leadership skills for use after high school. Resources to support academic, extra-curricular activities and athletics come from many sources—they are always in short supply. Basic program equipment and facilities are funded through the Issaquah School District with tax dollars; ASB fund raising and gate admission revenues are used for uniforms and helmets and support other Spartan programs; Booster Club concessions at home games, memberships and merchandise sales have helped over the years on enhancements. Only Skyline Gridiron Club dedicates itself solely to support the Skyline High School Spartan Football Program.

Our Mission - To establish, cultivate and maintain the highest level of relationships with and between the Spartan Football Program and its various constituencies in an effort to promote an awareness and appreciation of the program resulting in an increase of external funding to invest and enhance the growth and development of the players, coaches and seasons of play.

Why are we different?

The Board of Directors and Officers of the Skyline Gridiron Club can only be alumni parents or players. Remembering that the program belongs to the coaches and players, this helps decisions remain focused and balanced for the entire program, rather than any one element. Other programs struggle with a structure that allows for current parents to involve themselves in the business of the organization, which can result in a lack of consistency in activities and operations.

Our motto is “Attitude, Work Ethic and Tradition Doesn’t Graduate”.

Mission possible…..

When the Warren Easton Football Program couldn’t field a team for the first time in over 101 years because of damage sustained from Hurricane Katrina, the Skyline Spartans decided to help in some small way. Sending some money and some helmets was the beginning of this outreach program.

This summer, while five players, two coaches and some parents traveled to Louisiana for the NFL’s High School Player Development 7 on 7 Tournament at the New Orleans’ Saints training facility, it seemed like a good idea to try to contact the adopted program and check things out. The drive to the school was only 15 minutes from the competition, but when the cars left the freeway, we entered another world.

Although the 8’ of water is gone, it’s affects are not. The weight room has limited space for equipment and players. The ers are being refurbished, and the locker room doubles as the coaching office. The school website continues to carry mation on hurricane preparedness, a reality of life that continues to hover over this community.

There isn’t a field to host games and a six block walk in the heat and humidity takes the Eagles to a neighborhood park for practice, where the grass isn’t always mowed and the un-even ground could easily cause injuries. A single sled stands waiting for practice to begin.

But the expectations of the players and coaches of the Warren Easton Eagles is no different than that of our Skyline Spartans ~ winning. To do that, there needs to be continued drive by school officials, coaches, families and community to encourage the players who put on their shoulder pads to meet their opponents each week. There also needs to be help from others who understand what football can mean in the growth and development of individuals and teams. And sometimes, that help can come from almost 3,000 miles away.

2007 College Scholarship Recipients

Last February Andrew Gray, Ryan Somers, Cam Butler, Ryan Gilchrist, and Jake Knecht, of the Skyline football team traveled to Peru to deliver supplies they collected for a local orphanage and to tour the indigenous regions of Cusco, Machu Picchu, and the jungles of the Amazon. While unexpected protests stranded the group in Cusco, and unfortunately kept them from the jungle, they made the most of their extra time in the Cusco orphanage. Skyline Gridiron Club was pleased to also send t-shirts and sweatshirts along.

After graduation, there are many opportunities that await Spartan players. Whether they pursue further education opportunities at two or four year colleges, vocational or technical institutions, or immediately enter the working world, they are better prepared because of the lessons they have learned both on the field and off from Skyline football. The Skyline Gridiron Club offers graduating senior scholarships. We also follow the paths of many of these fine, young men and are always pleased when they return—whether it is during Homecoming activities, a Friday night game, or just returning to the community for a visit. We hope that those who settle themselves in Sammamish, will choose to come back and give back to the program they will forever be a part of. GO SPARTANS! 29

The Greater Eastside Junior Football Association was formed in 1963 and after many restructures, in 1998, the Skyline Youth Football Association (SYFA) was formed. In 2007, they fielded 16 teams with more than 315 players! The GEJFA systems today are aligned with the 3A and 4A KingCo High Schools - which are consistently two of the most competitive leagues in all of Washington High School sports. These young players and coaches are an integral part of the continued success of our SHS program.
