Buying into a New Club Benjamin Siegel (’22) This past year has dramatically changed our lives. We experienced less social interactions, less sporting activities and events, shortened school days (this might have been a good thing), and fewer after school extracurricular activities. Despite all of the challenges, more and more people have been getting the vaccine and our school is beginning to open up and allow some sports and other activities. Hopefully by next year we will be back to a normal school day along with basketball, shabbatons, NCSY conventions, and more.

However, I decided that I wanted a new club in the school sooner and began to brainstorm ideas for what to start.

When I entered 11th grade, I kept on wondering what to spend my Bar Mitzvah money on. Possibly

a new Xbox, TV, iPhone, or even a car. But why spend money when I could use it to make even more money? I began getting more and more involved in the stock market.

This new hobby of mine was very educational and a lot of fun. Why stop there, though? I could teach my fellow classmates how to invest and hope then become rich. That is why I decided to start a new stock market club here in the school over this past month.

Now, the obvious problem that I’d run into is that people wouldn’t want to spend their relaxed lunch period learning about boring line charts and graphs. However, there are incentives. For starters, there is a cash prize. I created a virtual stock market game online that is just like E-Trade and other trading platforms,

but instead it is with fake money.

Every person begins the game with $100,000 dollars. Throughout the week and until the next club meeting, whoever makes the most money gets a real cash prize. All you need to do is attend the club meeting on Fridays with a possible chance of walking home with some cash. Aside from playing the stock market game, I personally create a presentation each week starting with the basics in order to give strategies and advice on how to read a graph and positively increase your chances of winning the virtual game.

Friday’s class began with an introduction to the stock market. I explained basic terms and concepts before diving into the complexity of the stock market. This Friday, I will be teaching how to look for patterns and systems in the graph in order to predict where the stock will go. For example, there are stock patterns like “triangles,” “channels and rectangles,” and “Head and Soldiers.” After we master these trends and find ways to recognize them, we will be ready to invest real money in order to achieve financial freedom at a young age. To learn more about it, please attend (only highschoolers) my club on Friday and we can have fun and make some money.

Nadav Goldkin, a member of the club, said, “Benjamin Siegel comes prepared every week, we have a good time and have open discussions about the stock market while learning a lot. On top of that the game is so fun and I'm of course going to win.”

Last Friday was the first day of the Stock Market Club. It took place during the lunch period on Fridays and is beginning strong with a 12 person turnout. Who knew lots of people have the same goal as me? I plan on continuing the club until the end of the school year. Not only is there a weekly reward, but over the next six weeks, I put a small percentage of money aside for a grand winner at the end of the year. Whichever student made the most amount of money from the virtual game wins a great sum of cash. So far, many people have already expressed regret over not coming last Friday since they realized how important and fun it is. This past week, myself along with other classmates who went on Friday are beginning to see “green.” Throughout the day, we talk strategy and discuss what we decided to do to a stock. As I look around, I can see that many people will be joining this Friday

to learn more and attempt to make some money.

Coby Goldblatt said, “The stock market club is a great learning experience for me. I learned how to research stocks so I don't lose thousands of dollars like I did in the first week, and instead I stand a chance of making something off the stock market.”

The first ever CYHSB stock market club is off to a great start. I am learning about the stock market and then get to transfer my knowledge to my classmates who share the same passion as I do. I am grateful that the school is beginning to re-open its doors and become more comfortable to allow fun events and activities like the stock market club. Students are now learning a side topic and have fun in the process. I hope to see more people attend my club as the weeks progress and to teach them some new skills when making money.

Serving Up a New Sport Yosef Vanderwalde (’24) Due to the coronavirus, which has affected all of us, the CYHSB hasn’t been able to have many sports teams because they involve contact. Tennis, however, is a very socially distanced sport in which both players are more than ten feet apart for most of the match. With COVID-19 slowly coming to an end, Coach Nokes organized a tennis team so high schoolers could get some exercise and take advantage of a fun extracurricular activity.

Tennis as a CYHSB sport can be a bit of a challenge considering that our school doesn’t have tennis courts, and they don’t tend to be the type of thing most people have lying around their backyards. Both the boys and girls tennis teams are practicing this year at Harding Academy, a local school near the Dixon Galleries. Because we don’t have a home court, we always play at a different school.

Some families are being a little more cautious during the pandemic and jumped at the exciting opportunity to play a sport during this time. Because many people are trying out the sport, we have sixteen boys on the tennis team, which is almost half the school. It's great that we have so many people playing tennis, but a downside to it is the newer players don’t get to play in matches against other teams because the other teams usually don’t have as many people as we do.

Our coach, Coach Miller, does give an opportunity for players to rise from their rank at the beginning of the season. Our coach lets us do challenge matches, where players are able to challenge someone ranked higher than them to a match. If the challenger wins the match he takes the spot away from the original player. With the challenge matches as an option, nobody feels trapped in their spot amongst the team. The challenge matches bring a little internal competition to the team, which, in my opinion, makes it a little bit more fun.

While it may be new for some people on the team, many of us have played before. Some people were on the tennis team last year, and like me, some people have taken lessons in the past. There is a really wide range of skills on the team but everyone has the opportunity to learn and to play,

Nathan Baer said, “Tennis is a good fitness activity and it is fun to do it with my friends.”

This is the first tennis team I've been on, and so far I have been enjoying it a lot. It is a really good opportunity to hang out with my friends and to improve at a sport that I’m not so great at. The biggest sign of its success is how often many of us play against each other on our own time, even when we don’t have a match or a practice.

I think it is fair to say that tennis is a sport that is here to stay at CYHSB, even after all COVID restrictions are lifted. It is great exercise, feeds our competitive spirit, and lets us develop skills in a different kind of sport.

Disney Plus Does it Again Ezra Wiener (’23) With Wandavision being such a huge success, it seemed nearly impossible for Marvel to release a show that could live up to it. Then Falcon and the Winter Soldier came along. Now just to be clear I don’t think Falcon and The Winter Soldier is better, or even as good as Wandavision, but I do think it gets as close as a show can get to matching the awesomeness of Wandavision.

As the name suggests, the show centers around two Avengers, Falcon A.K.A. Sam Wilson, and the Winter Soldier A.K.A. Bucky Barnes, following the events of Endgame as they face a new threat, the Flag Smashers. The Flag Smashers are an organization with the main goal of recreating the sense of unity among the people of Earth following the snap. While that seems like an honorable goal, their methods of attaining it are more than questionable. We see this with them committing countless crimes, including murder. Another problem they encounter is the introduction of the new Captain America replacing Steve Rogers. After defeating Thanos in Avengers Endgame, Steve Rogers goes back in time to return the infinity stones. While in the past he decides to reunite with his old girlfriend from the 1940’s and end up marrying her, and staying in the past. As you might expect, when he returns to the Avengers he is a very old man. This means he can no longer be Captain America, so he gives the shield to Sam. Sam then decides to give up

the shield thinking himself, and really anyone incapable of living up to Steve Rogers. The government then decides to pick someone else to become the new Captain America. The person they end up going with is decorated US soldier, John Walker.

One thing this show does really well is its antagonists. The reason I used the word antagonist as opposed to villain is because none of the “villains” actually seem that villainous. We see this with the Flag Smashers, who are a group of people that really only want to create a better world where everyone belongs. Unfortunately, their methods of attaining this goal are clearly wrong, which really makes you question their morals.

We can also see this with John Walker, who keeps on getting in the way of Sam and Bucky throughout the show. He also

comes off as a bit arrogant and full of himself. Although, once we see his backstory we understand that all he really is is a man tasked with the impossible job of replacing Captain America. All he wants is to do a good job and not let the world down. A third example of this is Baron Zemo.

Baron Zemo was the main villain in Civil War who was responsible for the Avengers breaking up. In the show he serves as more of a protagonist than an antagonist as helps them find the Flag Smashers. This was very interesting to see as viewers were much more used to him being cold and manipulative, so it was cool to see him in a different light. It is extremely difficult to create villains that the viewer can sympathize with but Falcon and The Winter Soldier does it perfectly.

Noam Cahana said, “It is a show that has villains that are smart and cunning but also have complex and relatable emotions which gives the show a whole new element of excitement.”

Another great part of the show is the action. As Ezra Davidovics said, “The action scenes in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are great because there is so much going on and yet it is easy to follow.” Ezra couldn’t be more right. This show has some of the best action sequences I have ever seen out of anything from the MCU. We got to see a lot flying from Falcon which is always very cool as his style of flight is very unique. His flying involves a lot of gliding which looks extremely smooth especially

when he flies in open areas. My personal favorite fight in the show was when Sam, Bucky, John Walker, and his best friend Lamar Hoskins, fought the Flag Smashers on top of a truck. This was the first time we got to see Walker in action. He managed to do a pretty good job despite not having the same super-strength as the Flag Smashers. It was awesome to see him use the shield with a lot of skill and precision, throwing it with almost perfect accuracy.

The show also does a great job of dealing with darker and more serious themes. In general, Marvel movies tend to focus more on lighthearted fun and action, so it was very refreshing to see something that dealt with darker

themes. For example, at the beginning of the show, Bucky is in therapy to help deal with his PTSD. This is not not the sort of thing that would be addressed in your average Avengers movie.

Falcon and The Winter Soldier is probably my favorite project to come from Disney Plus matched only by the Mandalorian and Wandavision. It does a fantastic job of creating sympathetic villains, while also making you sure you know who’s right and wrong. The action is top tier with some of the best fight choreography I have ever seen, and the darker themes are dealt with exceptionally well. I can’t wait to see what happens in the last episode, and how the show will end.

This week, Rabbi Males’s Chumash class celebrated the completion of all of Parshas Mikeitz with a Siyum in the new outdoor gazebo. Great job guys!

Knowing Lifnei Eiver Shahar Cahana (’22) In this week’s double parsha, Parshas Acharei Mos-Kedoshim, the Torah goes through many halachos that the daily Jew needs to follow. One of these very halachos is the halacha of not placing a stumbling block in front of a blind person or, as it is known in the Torah, Lifnei Iver.

Rashi explains the halacha is not limited to literally placing an obstacle in front of a blind person, but also forbids them from giving untruthful advice to someone who cannot “see” exactly what they are doing. The Sefer Hachinuch quotes this halacha and adds on that one may not help another in violating a sin.

An example of this is when both a lender and a borrower agree to loan a transaction with interest, something that is assur to do, both individuals are guilty of the halacha of not placing a stumbling block in front of a blind person.

The Minchas Chinuch has a slightly different opinion compared to the Sefer Hachinuch. The Minchas Chinuch says that it is forbidden to give inappropriate advice to a fellow Jew, just like the Sefer Hachinuch writes. However, regarding the issur against assisting in a transgression, he adds another limitation. He adds that it even applies to someone who is not Jewish. For example, one who helps a non-Jew in violating a Noahide law, such as giving him eiver min hachai, flesh from an animal before it was killed, has violated this sin. This being the case, he argues that it is incomprehensible that it does not apply as well to giving over bad advice to a non-Jew. Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky, in a very innovative explanation, maintains that the two laws delineated by the Chinuch have different foundations. The basic

rule of Lifnei Iver isn’t that it is strictly within a relationship between two fellow Jews, including an admonition not to harm him through advice that is faulty.

However, there is a Kabbalah which

Therefore, in the same fashion that one may not sin as part of one’s duty to Hashem, he is also commanded not to cause another person to violate that transgression.

It is therefore logical that this also applies to a non-Jew. In other words, as it is applicable to a nonJew, only the aspect of not helping him to do that which is assur to him is in effect, but regarding a Jew, both aspects play a role.

Based on this, Rabbi Yaakov reconciles a halachic issue. There is a halachic ruling of Teshuvos Emunas Yisroel saying that anything that is allowed to a Jew but prohibited to a non-Jew is exempt from the halacha of placing a stumbling block in front of a blind person.

Therefore, eiver min hachai that is

impure may be handed to a nonJew, because a Jew only violates the issur of eiver min hachai if the flesh is pure, while on the other hand, a non-Jew is guilty even if it is impure. A major question with this halachic ruling comes from the case of a Kohen, who assigns a messenger who is a Yisroel to effect a betrothal for him with a woman who is divorced. On one hand, the messenger can never have the issur of marrying a woman who is divorced, while on the other hand, the Kohen does.

Tosafos rules that the Yisroel may not act as the Kohen’s messenger because of the halacha of not placing a stumbling block in front of a blind person. How do we now reconcile the contradiction? Rabbi Yaakov says that there is no difficulty. By the case of a non-Jew, which is based only on what a Jew “may not do,” he may “not cause” either since he is exempt from this particular transgression, he may not help the non-Jew. By the case of the Kohen, assisting in the prohibition is no less serious than giving over faulty advice.

What comes out of this discussion is that the Kabbalah of the halacha of not placing a stumbling block in front of a blind person teaches us two lessons.

First, that there is an issur against inappropriate advice, which Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky categorizes as a mitzvah between a man and his fellow, and it also applies to fellow Jews. Second, any issur that one is commanded not to transgress, he is also not allowed to cause or help other transgress that violation. This is related to his duty in his service of Hashem, and, in effect, “not causing” is an implied corollary to “not doing,” and this applies to people who are not Jewish as well.

From the Editors:

As APs approach at a rate that seems impossibly and alarmingly fast, nearly half of our school will have to cram in their final bits of studying before they take the daunting exam.

However, studying can be monotonous and boring; as a result, the studying is less productive. Even though there are APs, sometimes taking a break for a couple minutes can be really helpful. There are several new activities available, including tennis and the stock market club, that could be a perfect break for studying and making sure we stay fresh before these really important exams.
