After months of preparation, including long nights using the shooting machine, practicing our plays, and even an occasional trip to the hospital, the GMSG Lady Macs nally set off to dominate in the 2024 HAFTR Scott Satran Memorial Tournament. This was the rst time in history that the GMSG attended this event. They had already accomplished so much this season, with a record of 7-3, and were ready to bring their skills and excitement to New York.

Upon arrival in Long Island, the Lady Macs went to Bagel Boys for breakfast and then headed off to a gym where they had the opportunity to practice their skills once more before the start of the tournament. Then, the girls spent the afternoon on Central Avenue and had the opportunity to shop and explore the area. After the girls irritated their parents by spending too much money, they returned to their hosts’ homes to make nal preparations for their rst game.

Before the game began, a video was played about the hostages and the situation in Israel, followed by Hatikva.

Even though there were ten different teams ghting for the championship, everyone could come together and feel

united in the same goal to bring the hostages home.

The GMSGers began the game energetically and surprised the HAFTR fans in the stands by taking a 12-8 lead. Junior Sarah Kahane led the team with numerous assists to Junior Dahlia Siegel. It remained a close, exciting game with the roaring Memphis bench cheering on our team.

Sophomore Yonina Lichter locked the Hawks down defensively, blocking and stealing the ball, bringing the Memphis fans to their feet. But ultimately, the HAFTR Hawks prevailed in a close, intense game. The GMSG basketball team held their heads up high and celebrated a great effort with a feast at Chickies.

The Lady Macs awoke the following morning with renewed energy ready to take on the challenge of playing HANC. At halftime, the Lady Macs were winning 16-14.

Coach Josh Kahane gave a fantastic motivational speech where he encouraged the girls’ to ght their hardest for the win. When the game resumed, the team scored 10 points in the rst 2 minutes! The HANC coach called a time out and the Lady Macs were rejuvenated from taking the lead!

YUNMUN Is a Sport

re you part of the 75% of Americans that can’t run a mile in under 10 minutes? Well, do I have the sport for you-- YUNMUN! This seemingly boring and nerdy extracurricular is really the best type of sport for the lazy couch potato. YUNMUN has all of the classic facets of nearly all sports like being exciting, fast paced, and dynamic; just without all of the running.

YUNMUN (Yeshiva University National Model United Nation) is a serious sporting event, requiring months of preparation to even participate. To be part of a school’s YUNMUN team, you have to pass through several levels of tryouts to see if the future player is truly as t as they need to be in order to be a part of the team. First, the aspiring candidate must go through the grueling task of sending an email to Mrs. Tsuna explaining why they want to be part of the team and what makes them quali ed to be part of our YUNMUN delegation. Then they must go to the real tryouts.

Each hopeful player has to stand up in front of four judges who must determine their capabilities, which include their public speaking prowess, their research skills, and their reaction to hard questions about the chosen subject. Each candidate is carefully weighted to see how they will shape up and are judged concerning how they will improve the team overall.

After the torturous waiting period to see how many people the YUNMUN conference will limit each school to, the teams must start practicing in earnest. Like most high school athletes, YUNMUNers have to spend at least 3 hours a week preparing and practicing to be able to topple the other

teams at the big conference at the end of the season. We have to work as a team to improve our skills in talking over one another and persuading each other to support a given position. It is vital that everyone on each team knows all of the rules of the game as well, so that is also a major part of our training before we go to the conference.

The nal conference of the YUNMUN season is where our team truly gets to shine. At this conference, we are split up into different rooms based on the different topics we were instructed to be prepared about. Then we compete within this smaller group, one on one, with people from all different teams to nd the best YUNMUNer. As individuals the team member must convince the other players that we should work together, but the real skill comes in when an individual must take credit for uniting different factions together. The mental endurance required to compete at YUNMUN should put it in the sports canon alongside giants like chess. Each competitor must be focused entirely on the endgame of convincing the greatest number of people to support their ideas for changing the world. If a teammate is not entirely focused on this goal, they will lose. On the last day of our grand tournament in New York, awards are given to the best delegates for each topic, and these awards are very hard to get, and require a lot of skill to acquire, which makes this a very competitive sport.

Many might underestimate YUNMUN as something only people who are unathletic do, but the reality is that this sport requires immense concentration and stamina to do well in, and an award from YUNMUN deserves a place on the shelf of sport trophies as well.

You might disagree, but hear me out. Most people probably already knew who Taylor Swift was, I'll give you that. But, of all the millions of sports fans out there, especially football, the majority knew of Travis Kelce rst. Think about it: did all those football fans know who Taylor Swift was or any of her songs before she had relations with Kelce? Probably not.

When football fans found out about their relationship, what did they all do rst? Look up who Taylor Swift is. There was a famous TikTok trend where NFL or NBA teams would ask the players which Taylor Swift songs they knew. Most players didn't have a single answer, and couldn’t even name one song. You Gov shows that Travis Kelce is the 4th most famous football player and that his popularity is only going up. There are quite a lot of football players out there but the one that everyone knows is Travis Kelce. I asked 3 boys and 3 girls who they knew more about before the relationship started. All 3 boys knew more about Kelce before the relationship, and 1 girl said that she knew more about Kelce.

Even though 2 girls voted for Taylor, the majority said that they knew more about Kelce. Though music fans may have known only about Taylor, in this argument we often leave out the big group of sports fans, which includes millions of people. With that, I stick with my argument and truly believe that Travis Kelce made Taylor Swift more famous.

Though some might argue it was Kelce who made Swift famous, I would have to disagree. Taylor has been famous since her debut back in 2004 (20 years ago!), while Kelce might've only been heard about since his Super Bowl win last year. After asking my fellow GMSGers, a large majority hadn't even heard of Travis Kelce before last year, but had heard of Taylor on multiple occasions. But if that's not enough to convince you that Taylor made Kelce famous, then no problem! Travis Kelce had 1.1 million followers on instagram before meeting Taylor, and sure 1.1 million is a lot, but compared to Swift's 279.4 million followers, it looks like nothing. Even after his relationship with Swift began, he still only has 5.7 million followers. If you STILL need convincing, allow me. Kelce has won two Super Bowls with his team. Swift has been selling out huge stadiums in mere minutes, has billions of fans screaming and crying her songs for around three hours, and has made a whopping 1.04 billion dollars just from her concerts alone. She also just won her 13th grammy (if you know, you know), won album of the year four times, and was voted woman of the year in 2023. So if you ask me, Taylor de nitely made Travis famous.

1. This logo has to be the best in the whole NFL It's the perfect color

combination and the designs perfectly highlight the beauty of the dolphin.

Whoever made this logo must’ve been a woman because whoever she is knew how to design a logo that will make for a cute out t. The blue of the logo immediately reminded me of the ocean and bright sun, which takes me back to summer days on the beach. This logo perfectly encaptures how cute dolphins are and brings you back to summer beach days, therefore this logo is number one.

2. The man in the picture is very unique looking but has a tiny face. I

mean, he seems like a nice guy who would treat people well, but that could just be his patriotic colors in his hair. Overall, the color scheme is nice, he seems like a good guy, and even has a nice jawline. The red, white and blue, are giving patriotic vibes, they should call themselves the Patriots. This team gets rated second because I love America.

3. This logo gets its third place spot because of the colors of the bird. This team is very up to date with trends by using red in its logo. The bird has a bit of a scary look though, which makes me like it less than the others. I always see cardinals in my backyard in my hometown of Boston but they never look this scary so I’m not sure what that's all about. This logo is pretty aesthetically pleasing, but couldn’t rank number one because of its weird scary face.

4. At rst glance, this logo is a bit ugly and very simple. It doesn’t tell me anything

about the team, except that they play football, which I already knew. In addition, their name is so plain and not creative at all. The green is a pretty color but it's still too boring for my taste, and I think they could add some sparkle and bits of pink to make it more appealing to the eye. This logo is not my favorite, but I know that my best friend loves this team, so I am rating them a four.

5. After the scary bird from before, I was not prepared for this logo. Not only does the

logo make no sense but it's weirdly creepy. This is meant to be a football logo not an advertisement for the Hunger Games. I don’t know what the kind of football you watch is, but in mine, they call fouls and there's not usually knives involved. This logo gets fth place because it seems to have nothing to do with their city nor their state or even the game of football, aside from the football they randomly decided to include in it. This logo gets rated a ve.

6. This team is rated last because I don't like their logo at all. It looks like the arrow

button on my keyboard, and thinking about my keyboard makes me think of all the schoolwork I have to do. The letters ``KC” in the middle of the logo remind me of KFC and, as a meat hater, their logo makes me nauseous because it makes me think of nasty burgers. They look more like a restaurant or food brand logo than a sports team, which I guess is more appealing to some, but not for me, which is why this one comes in sixth, and nal, place.

Goldie's Guidance

Dear Goldie, I am classi ed as what one may call a “nerd.” I enjoy school, I go to bed at 6:45 every night and, chas v'shalom, I should play any sort of sport. My friends make fun of me sometimes, but it’s just who I am. However, I have a secret dream, a desire you may call it. I wish to play sports! I want to be the goalie in a football game, I want to make a basket in baseball, I want to score a touchdown in basketball. I want to be a jock! I brought this idea up to my friend’s and they said that unless math is a sport, I would never be a sportsball kinda girl. I don’t know what to do, sports seem so wonderful but every time I pick up a bat, I whack myself in the face. Please advise me on what to do in this situation.

The game was simple, whoever shed more animal blood won. Anyway, back to your issue, I advise that you stick to what you're best at, kid. Winning is not what makes the game fun, rather the team is the most important part! You can still be part of a team that appreciates your unique abilities. You can be a jock in the realm you know best: math, science, english, history, or even YUNMUN! You can be the captain of the mathletes and win rst prize at the science fair. Touchdown on what you know, because a jock is only as good as his game. So, go get ‘em tiger, we’ll see you at the nish line.

Dear Readers,

Sports can be anything from Basketball to Corn Hole and even to YUNMUN. Every player on a team serves a speci c role that comes together to make the team thrive. LeBron may be the GOAT, but without his team he couldn't get there. Similarly, we each play a role in a community, each bringing our own unique abilities. When all of our individual qualities are merged, our community can ourish. Within dif cult times in Eretz Yisrael, may we continue to come together as a nation bringing us steps closer to geula.
