Breaking Faking News By: Hodaya Harary ('27) ave you ever turned on the news and faced a shocking story that just doesn’t seem to add up? Chances are, if you have internet access, you’ve inevitably encountered what seems like the mild annoyance of fake news reports. However, this issue is much more severe than it may seem at surface level. As fake news continues to spread and information becomes easier to access worldwide, people are nally starting to realize the devious paradox of fake news, out to deceive you every time you turn on your phone. The internet plays a massive role in all of our lives. Whether it's for academics, business, or just casual use, the internet has become a major consultant for anyone looking to nd quick and accurate information, for the most part at least. As information becomes more accessible, it’s become increasingly easier to spread, or even create fake news. Within seconds, millions of people can read the same article, visit the same website, or watch the same TikTok, sharing information that is misleading, or even straight up incorrect. Stories of people being
scammed out of thousands of dollars or being hacked by cybercriminals on Facebook all illustrate one thing: the atrocity of so-called “clickbait”, luring the viewer into something that is usually not what they expected. However, fake news isn’t just a modern issue. False information has been an age-old problem, tracing back centuries. Even President John Adams himself recognized its gravity, and famously wrote in some of his personal notes, “There has been more new error propagated by the press in the last ten years than in a hundred years before 1798.” This issue only worsened with time, as news became easier to spread, read, and share with others. Especially with the rapid increase and popularity of social media, fake news spreads like wild re. In uencers can get millions of views on their videos, addressing different perspectives on current events, however, these videos are liable to contain misinformation. While at times, various viewpoints can be helpful to fully understand different situations, they can also be detrimental to those who hear them, causing them to believe something that is potentially untrue.
