VETERAN APARTMENT 3rd Year Studio Project, 2015 Mid-rise Apartment Bandung, Indonesia Supervisor: Dr.Eng. Arif S. Wibowo

This 3rd year-design studio project is aim to design mid-rise apartment in a urban context. This project focuses on analysis and concepting big idea and also designing more advance building system such as building utility, basement park, and structure system on a dwelling typology.

ANALYSIS

CONCEPT Description

The main issue of this project how to design a livable dwelling place in urban commercial area with less-noise and less-polution. The other issue is how the building provide a public facility to ease pedestrian to walk, to take a rest, and to change public transportation line. So the existence of the building could give more benefit to the city and environment.

Commercial Commercial Residence Green Space Project Site Public Transpotation Line

Generating public space

public-private zoning

green buffer and urban farming

Generating Public Space The strategy is to make the ground and second floor as a commercial area and more open-to-air. The ground floor is designed with less-boundaries, so it could be more pedestrian friendly and become meeting point. Public-Private Zoning Building zoning is a strategy to enhance convenience living for the dweller by layering the characteristic from public, semi-public, to private zone. So we can control the entrance and security between different user. Green Buffer and Urban farming Planting trees in the perimeter can reduce the vehicle noise and polute. It could also create a tree-line that activate the pedestrian pathway.

MASSING

The site is located at junction in central Bandung which is located in the main road that connect Northern Bandung and Southern Bandung. The site is passed by three line public transportation in Sumatera street and one line public transportation in Veteran street which both street is heavy traffic roadway. The site situated in comercial area along the way and also has medium-to-high density housing behind the comercial area. From the diagram beside, the situation has very less-green and less-open space.

Ensure the buildable area according to the regulation to align the building line of the street

extrude the buildable area to optimize the area use

Push down the some building mass that face veteran street to make building podium

Cut the mass between building and podium to give pedestrian access from Sumatra street

Eliminate the first floor to create more public and meeting place and give and visual access from Sumatra street to Veteran Street

Tipical Basement The apartment is defined into 4 zone, i.e. public, semi-public, semi-private, and prvate. The public zone is for common people such as pedestrian. Semi-public zone is for specific user but not only for the dweller. This zone consists of paid facility such as rentable meeting room and fitness centre. Semi-private zone is shared space for the dweller to meet and socialize each other. Private zone is for the flat unit. The apartment has total 66 unit which has 3 types of unit, i.e. studio unit, 2br, and 3br. The apartment also has 1:1 parking ratio spread into 3 basement parking for the dweller.

FACADE CONCEPT The facade is designed to consider tropical climate which is exposed by sunlight and rain all year-round. The cantilever-floor slab is used as a balcony that can shade the rain. While to reduce sunlight, Active-sun shading is applied with track in it. So the dweller could slide it to blind the spot wherever they want

Parametric Design Studio Project, 2015 Public Pavilion (Supervisor) Dr.Eng. Aswin Indraprastha, Ph.D (Team Member) Aloysius Rio, Fadhil Sadewo

Art(tree)ficial is a parametric modeling that use computational method and procedure such as variable and parameter to generate a reference object. The refencere object can be a panel, pavillion, or industry product. The idea is to create a tree-like shelter to provide a shady space for public activity. Ar(tree)ficial consist of tree trunks which the crown of each tree is connected to each other and create a defined space. Using a waffle grid structure, this public intervention pavilion can stand as form active structure system. The 3D modeling of Ar(tree)ficial is generated with Rhinoceros as a basic modeling and Grasshopper plug-in as a parameter generator

REF ERENCE PO INT to define reference point, select the surface that will be an axis for reference point. Then extract the edge curve of surface and divide the selected curve into equal lenght segments which is defined by points. These points will be used as reference point to array the opposite surface. For instance, the x-surface is arrayed based on y-axis reference points.

PURABAYA BUS TERMINAL Architecture Final Project, 2016 Transportation Sidoarjo, Indonesia (Supervisor) Ir. Bambang Toto Pambudi

Purabaya Bus Terminal is a redesign project that aim to upgrade and to develop the quality of public transportation services in Surabaya. As an A type Bus Terminal, the old terminal has been unable to accomodate the bus needs nowadays. The terminal also has been improper to serve the passengers. Unorganized circulation between human and vehicle still occur in the old terminal and cause cross-circulation that can be unsafe for the users. This redesign project consider the value of transportation building that represent the indentity of the city. As a intercity terminal, Purabaya Bus Terminal requires a novelty to become the face or the first impression of the modern city of Surabaya.

ANCHOR

DESIGN IDEA

This project is located in a site right across the Alun-Alun Park (a large central open lawn space which is common to villages, towns and cities in Indonesia), and it is highly exposed. People tend to visit this area frequently as it offers low-cost entertainments and attractions. This trend increases its values and successfully attracts people to visit. Because of that, the surroundings of Alun-alun Bandung gradually transform into shopping areas and office buildings which subsequently oppose the heritage-styled buildings without any coexistence. This inevitable problems couldn’t be resolved easily as it needs an integration among buildings. During this phenomena, we propose a self-development that considering coexistence between buildings and environment. A commercial development that able to synergize in a creative city and people on it.

DESIGN GOAL BUILDING

HUMAN

T AR SM DING IL BU

The attractiveness of Bandung as a creative city is being obstructed by improper development. Alun-Alun Bandung, the centre area of the city, is being exposed for the transformation to commercial area due to its high land taxes. This development tends to have no correlation between the others and do not have any consideration to the surroundings environment. And presently, this area become disordered and lack of buildings co-existence.

SM A CIT RT Y

SITE CONDITION

LIVABLE CITY

ENVIRONMENT

We propose a mixed-used building design that can create an urban sustainability, which provides three different urban elements (nature, human, and building/environment) to coexist as a system to create beneficial impact to the city. The three different urban elements is designed to be interdependent and responsible to each other. In other words, this three elements will work by mutualism symbiotic and create urban sustainability.

SMART BUILDING

The Building acts as a smart building that can meet its need, such as water needs, by depending on nature. The existence of the building could bring a system to repair and have less-impact to the nature. In this case, the project will improve the ability of the soil to absorb water and restore the nature the natural state. The building also play a role to purify the water and discharge clean water to the nature.

SMART CITY

The concept of smart city is how to connect the building to the surrounding area by its network and its infrastructure so that will repair the urban structure and encourage more pedestrians. The other concept is how to inspire the people of the city by its technology to recycle water and grow urban farming. The building  also emerges the new building typology that will encourage urban lifestyle and creative city.

LIVABLE CITY Natural element as an interactive public space creates more green space and more oxygen to make healthy environment. People will use the interactive public space to refresh their mind and hang-out with family or friends. This concept will encourage the people to give more respects and responsibilities to the nature.

MASSING PROCESS

S P O N G E CO N C E PT CATCH

RELEASE

A conventional building mass, which uses all of the site area to maximize building use. The building has three levels and has different function each level. The function is divided by hierarchy of needs.

The mass is cut by the river crossing through the site. It creates a canyon that oriented to the river. This canyon provides promenade at the side of the river walkways to encourage pedestriana and connect two public spaces.

Shift the mass into pyramid form, which will has less-facade in the side of buiilding that faces the heritage building. Thus the existence of this building just act as public space and doesn’t distract the harmony of heritage building

Because of high rates of precipitation, the building is perforated to create pores all across the design to strore and use rainwater to its fullest potential.

OR

RECYCLE

USE

Sponge buiding concept was conceived from observation regarding typical buildings in Bandung which usually used the entire site with pavement, regardless of BCR. Thus the water that enters the site discharged into the sewer as soon as possible. This result in smaller quantity of water caught by the soil and vegetation. Sponge concept is presented as a more responsible building technology to this problem. It catches rainwaters to be stored and used as a resources. On top of that, this design elevate the possibility for rainwaters to be released by infiltrating the water to the land to achieve zero run-off or discharging the overflows into the river as a clean water.

Because of the nature of landscraper, there will be areas which don’t have adequate ceiling height for human activities. Rather than letting those areas abandoned, we would like to design it as a roof water storage. The main idea is to keep any rainwater that succesfully penetrate the roof to be used later. Those water will be used to maintain urban farmings and vegetation scross the site. Furthermore, it also acts as a wetland with playgrounds above it as people could do activities on the sloping roof.

SPONGE SYSTEM STRATEGY

PHYTOR EM ED IATION GAR D EN Phytoremediation is a bio-technologies that uses living plants to clean up contaminated soil, water, and air. The pytoremediation plants could also be used as wetland features to clean up the river flow, providing fresh air to the environment.

M YCOFILTRATR ION Mycofiltration is a form of bioremediation using fungi to degrade water contaminants such as oil and soap. The mycelium can rreduce the toxicity, absorbs, and concentrates any metal excess into its body

W ETLAND GAR D EN Wetland garden is a natural landscape which can provide a range of attractive planting opportunities such as Red Anturium, Akar Wangi, Bambu Air, Dahlia, and etc. Wetland garden also can be used to catch water during wet seasons.

This is the main system of the design. The main goal of this system it to let rainwaters into the soil as fast as possible so it can be stored and used later. Other benefits of this system is that it promotes stacking effect as well as provideing enough natural sunlight for the interiors. An integrated system to use all of the availabele natural features.

CHARCOAL GRAVEL BIOPORE

PIPE TO GROUND WATER STORAGE

This part of the design focuses on its capability to absorbs rainwater Pedestrian path at the side of the river are design with porousity concept while still maintaining its function as a stage. Through this decision, it in mind. This means that the pathway should be able to allow rainwaters will encourage a different kind of performance art since there will be to penetrate the ground so the biopores could do their job. The pathway vegetations on the stage. This method is called “Floating ”Wetland” which is put on top of a geoblock support layer so rainwaters could penetrate works as an elevated wetlands. In order to achieve thath, the flooring of through the vegetations part of the path. Below that there are several the stage uses grills so vegetations could grow inbetween the gap. other layers which main function is to purify the rainwater so it could be collected at the biopores or chaneled to underground pipe.

RIVERSIDE FEATURES

Since surrounding Alun-alun Bandung is highly exposed, people tend to visit the area frequently. This trend gains the value high and emerge its interest. The neighborhood of Alun-alun Bandung is gradually transformed into shopping areas and office buildings. This development blatantly opposing the ‘heritage’ buildings without any coexistency. The goal of its design is to tackle those trend by proposing a new kind of embedded development by connecting the surrounding’s network

ROOFTOP FEATURES Rooftop is designed to maximize green area and accomodate both restoration biodiversity and introducing urban farming culture to the city. Biodiversity is applied on slope area as it need less floor slab depth than urban farming and to facilitate public space to the city. This area is hoped to restore biodiversities such as insects and birds that act as polinator by the implementation of plants that can attract those insects or birds. since the roof has limit capacity of supporting weight, then only small plants that has light weight are implemented. On the other hand, Bandung has some urban farming communities that barely recognized by public even it offers much benefit both for culture and environment. this urban farming has two methods of plantation, conventional and aquaponics. The conventional method has biofiltration below the plant to filter the water and restore it in restoration tanks below the roof, while aquaponic method applies mutualism symbiosis betweet fish and plant. with the urban farming existence on the centre of city, we hope this culture will be familiarized by most people, especially for children.

L E I S U RE L E V E L Providing recreational activity for its user. People could utilize playground and various games/toys such as pool table, bowling area, mini golf, and etc. This encourages interaction among users so there will be positive atsmosphere inside the building
