Internet of Things - Prospects and Challenges for Mauritius (Tuesday, 17 th May 2016) One of the emerging sectors in telecommunication is the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT is the network of physical objects: devices, vehicles, buildings and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors and network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data. The IoT allows objects to be sensed and controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit. 2

The IoT is, today, a key driver for state-of-the-art research and innovation in the ICT sector that can lead to the creation of new enterprises and high end employment. IoT is bringing and promising important changes in our lives and in the economic environment. The first day of this two Day Workshop will bring together stakeholders from the public and private sectors, including students from secondary and tertiary educational institutions to share their experiences and views on how the IoT can become a driving force for the socio-economic development of Mauritius. The objectives of the first day of the workshop are to: • raise awareness on this emerging sector; • take cognizance of IoT initiatives in Mauritius and of the country’s preparedness to capitalise on IoT and • discuss on the strategic approach to adopting IoT as one of the key ingredients to boost socioeconomic development of the Republic of Mauritius. 2"Internet of Things Global Standards Initiative". ICT Entrepreneurship for Social Impact (Wednesday, 18 th May 2016) The National Computer Board (NCB) has been organizing events to commemorate the WTISD since 2007. This year, the theme for WTISD is “ICT Entrepreneurship for Social Impact”. This theme is in line with the ITU’s endeavor towards unlocking the potential of ICTs for young innovators and entrepreneurs, innovative SMEs, start-ups and technology hubs. These are drivers of innovative and practical solutions for catalysing progress in achieving international sustainable development goals. In an emerging economy, like ours, ICT Entrepreneurs, start-ups and ICT SMEs have a very high potential to drive and sustain economic growth through the development of Innovative and high end ICT-enabled solutions. Such initiatives promise not only to create new jobs and wealth (especially for youth), but also to generate new knowledge, thus potentially providing an competitive edge to our Country on the regional as well as on the international fronts.. The second day of this Workshop will target a number of key stakeholders involved in ICT driven entrepreneurship in Mauritius. These include: IT and ITES professionals; Entrepreneurs; SMEs and Start-ups in the ICT sector from the NCB Technopreneurship Programme; local incubators and Accelerators; Software development Companies; Multimedia, e-business; web design and web development Companies; public sector representatives and their Business Development Managers. The Workshop will also target all final year undergraduate and postgraduate students of the local public and private Tertiary Education Institutions. The objectives of the second day of the Workshop are to: • Highlight the importance of Small, young and Innovative firms in the ICT sector • Promoting Innovative Technopreneurs as drivers of innovative and practical solutions. • Unlocking the value of ICT Entrepreneurship.
