Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippines' national hero, is well aware of the pitfalls of the transfer and absorption of fake news as a member of the propaganda movement and a victim of falsified narratives As a member of the said movement, he and other reformists conducted a campaign for information and advocated for reforms in the Philippines Since the Spaniards manipulated the Filipinos into believing in lies and distortions, Rizal and his colleagues pushed for equal rights, fair justice, and education. A NOVEL SUMMARY BY: RAYVEN LOMBOY
Noli Me Tangere, which means "Touch me not," is a novel that was written by Dr. Jose Rizal in 1887. It was published in Germany during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. The book is divided into 63 chapters. It was followed by El Filibusterismo, which was published in 1889. In this book, he exposes contemporary Spaniards of all stripes in the Philippines.
Juan Crisostomo Ibarra is the main character in this story. He studied in Europe for seven years and returned to the Philippines only to discover that his father died in a prison as a result of a quarrel with the parish curate, Padre Damaso. He is engaged to be married to Maria Clara, the daughter of Kapitan Tiago. To demonstrate his good intentions, Ibarra later plans to establish a public school in his town at his own expense. He received ostensible support from everyone, especially Padre Salvi, the successor of Padre Damaso, whom Maria Clara admits she fears.
Ibarra was involved in a suspicious accident that threatened his life. After the accident, the festivities continue until the dinner, where Fray Damaso grossly and wantonly insults Ibarra over his father's memory. The young man loses control and is about to kill the friar, who is saved by Maria Clara's intervention.
Ibarra is then excommunicated, and Capitan Tiago is forced to break the engagement and agree to Maria Clara's marriage to a young and inoffensive Spaniard provided by Padre Damaso due to his fear of the friars. Maria Clara agrees to this arrangement, obedient to her reputed father's command and influenced by her mysterious fear of Padre Salvi, but falls gravely ill and is only saved by medicines sent secretly by Ibarra and secretively administered by a girlfriend. Ibarra is successful in having the excommunication lifted, but before he can explain why, an uprising against the Civil Guard is secretly orchestrated by agents of Padre Salvi, and the leadership is attributed to Ibarra in order to ruin him. He is warned by a mysterious friend, Elias, whose life he had accidentally saved; however, wanting to see Maria Clara first, he refuses to escape, and when the outbreak occurs, he is arrested as the instigator and thrown into prison in Manila.
Ibarra escapes from prison and sees Maria Clara alone on the evening when Capitan Tiago throws a ball in his Manila home to celebrate his alleged daughter's engagement. He begins to reproach her because the charge against him is based on a letter written to her before he went to Europe, but she clears herself of betraying him.
The letter was obtained through deception and in exchange for two others written by her mother shortly before her birth, proving that Padre Damaso is her true father. Padre Salvi had accidentally discovered these letters in the convent and used them to intimidate the girl and obtain Ibarra's letter, from which he forged others to incriminate the young man. She tells him that she will marry the young Spaniard to save her mother's name and Capitan Tiago's honor, as well as to avoid a public scandal, but that she will always be true to him.
Elias facilitated Ibarra's escape by transporting him in a boat up the Pasig to the lake, where they are so closely pursued by the Civil Guard that Elias leaps into the water and draws the pursuers away from the boat in which Ibarra is hidden.
On Christmas Eve, Elias appears, wounded and dying, beside the corpse of Sisa. Basilio, who is unaware of Elias' identity, helps him construct a funeral pyre on which his and the madwoman's bodies will be burned.
