WE HAVE PUT TOGETHER THIS PATHWAYS GUIDE, DESIGNED TO BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH OUR PROSPECTUS, IN ORDER TO GIVE YOU A FLAVOUR OF WHAT IS POSSIBLE IN THE EXCITING YEARS AHEAD OF YOU. YOU HAVE WORKED INCREDIBLY HARD TO GET TO THIS POINT AND WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR EXPERIENCE AT SIXTH FORM ALLOWS YOU TO PROGRESS POST-18 AND SECURE YOUR FUTURE AMBITIONS.

Some students prefer to go straight into work or embark on an apprenticeship after Sixth Form so that they can be paid whilst also continuing to learn.

Some students prefer a university route and others might choose to mix these three routes. Some subjects such as engineering and business studies lead to direct employment and apprenticeships whilst other subjects in languages, the arts, humanities and social studies offer highly respected courses that lead into a wide range of future study options and careers.

This guide aims to give you inspiration, clear advice and also help to dispel some of the myths surrounding progress into university and the world of work. The advice we give here can’t cover every pathway and we don’t want to suggest that our advice is the only way of arriving at a certain destination. The routes indicated here follow advice offered by universities and employers, and is also based on our experience. As a rule of thumb, we advise that you choose a balanced range of subjects which you enjoy, especially if you do not yet know what you want to do in the future, as this helps to keep your future options open. At Wellsway you really do have a wealth of choice and support to help you meet your future ambitions.

There are many ways to pursue a career.

Many degrees are valued because they develop critical thinking skills and give individuals an awareness of national and global issues. These courses, similarly offer entry into a range of future careers; from retail to theoretical physics, marketing and hospitality to architecture and biomedical science. There are, of course, only a small number of pathways that demand specific A-Level choices such as medicine and veterinary science. There are also some employers, apprenticeship schemes and universities who have preferred subjects, so it is always sensible to fully research the pathways you are interested in before deciding on a route. If you are a current Wellsway student then you will be supported in this as you make this highly important decision. In all cases, universities and employers want intelligent, confident students with a range of experience, knowledge and skills that they are able to use in a practical sense. We build our Sixth Form programme at Wellsway with this very much in mind. When you are ready for your next step please come and talk to us. You will receive a very warm welcome.

MYTHS

There are many routes into careers.

You do not have to take 4 subjects at Wellsway. Our minimum is 3 ‘core’ subjects (see the prospectus for details). You can take 4 or even 5 (!).

The ‘facilitating subjects’ - Maths and Further Maths, English Literature, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, History, French and German – are simply a list of subjects that are more often required than others by universities. It is not essential to study all or any of them, it depends on your ambitions and interests.

The Russell Group (24 leading UK universities) do not recognise subjects as ‘hard’ or ‘soft’.

Universities and employers have their own requirements, and can have different needs for the same courses. Always check with universities / employers if you want to study/work at specific institutions.

Wellsway Sixth Form offers all students the chance to take additional qualifications alongside their core studies to boost their CV and applications.

You do not need to take Law or Accountancy A-level to study it at University. There are no ‘essential’ A-levels for these careers. For Law, students often take at least one of the following – French, German, Maths, Science, English, History or Geography. There are various routes into Accountancy.

If you go to Sixth Form you do not have to go to University. Go to Sixth Form to learn, to have fun, and to set yourself up for the future. Qualifications and good grades give you options.

IT AND COMPUTING IT RELATED BUSINESS This covers a huge variety of potential pathways, and further reading is recommended.

COMMENT Technology increasingly permeates every aspect of our lives, and it is becoming increasingly important to be ‘tech-savvy’.

The IT industry was affected less than most other industries during the recent recession. It is being given increasing importance by the government and business; Tech City, a cluster of technology firms in London compared to those in Silicon Valley and backed by government funding, arguably leads the way for innovation in this sector.

IT is a dynamic industry where graduates often highlight working on different technologies and interesting problems. They enjoy variety, relaxed work environments, flexible working arrangements, working to deadlines, working closely with a variety of people and a good work/life balance.

However, in some areas extra work may be necessary to meet project deadlines. In the games industry for example, long hours are standard.

According to the KCES ‘Technology and Skills in the Digital Industries Report’ (2013) the digital sector will require nearly 300,000 recruits at higher skills levels by 2020, but there is already a skills shortage.

COMMENT An increasing number of graduates are entering jobs in financial services, where a degree is increasingly necessary for managerial and professional jobs.

Major banks and well known accountancy firms such as KPMG, Ernst & Young and PricewaterhouseCoopers are among the largest recruiters of graduates in the UK.

There are many jobs requiring clerical and administrative skills across a range of sectors including the civil service, the NHS and large private sector corporations.

Self-employment is common in some parts of financial services. Accountancy and financial advice are two areas where self-employment is especially widespread.

Typical university offers to study law range from AAB upwards. It is of great benefit to have relevant work experience as well.

COMMENT The education sector is a challenging, rewarding and inspiring area in which to work. Salaries in education, including teaching, are comparable to those of other graduate jobs in the public sector and related professions.

Social care is a demanding sector where you can make a real impact on improving people’s lives. Training providers for nurses, paramedics and physiotherapists prefer applicants to have relevant work experience, in a care setting.

You can become a paramedic through university or as a student paramedic (which takes up to 5 years part-time study in addition to work). To become a nurse a degree in nursing is now essential.

The armed forces and emergency service sectors are some of the largest employers within the UK job market and provide a wide variety of opportunities. They recruit a wide variety of graduates each year and require a varied level of education and experience.

COMMENT There are a variety of ways into journalism.

Students often graduate in other degrees before switching to this career. Work experience is a key factor, and getting published or creating a blog will help you get noticed by employers.

Self-employment and freelance work is common in the sector and pay for artistes are highly variable in the entertainment industry.

There is a need for freelance workers to have wider business skills including marketing, networking and financial management.

Working in the media sector can be very demanding. You may be required to work long hours and spend periods away from home.

The vast majority of contracts are obtained by word of mouth so talent, ability and networking skills are paramount.

Thanks to digitalisation making music has never been more accessible. The UK is considered a world leader both on stage and behind the scenes.

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, COMMENT Many medical/biomedical scientists work in both the public and private sector.

Modern laboratories are the hi-tech hubs of hospitals at the cutting edge of medical technology.

Despite improvement over the last decade, business believes there to be a general shortage of students skilled in the engineering sector. Careers here are traditionally male dominated but there is a real push to close the gender gap.

Women in Science and Construction (WISE) was established to encourage women to consider an engineering career.

STEM is the only sector which has maintained government funding at university level. They are placing an increasing importance on it in education at all levels.

Green Technology is set to be the biggest UK engineering sector. The LCEGS Report (2013) reflects that 938,000 people were employed in the ‘green business’ sector.

COMMENT There are a wealth of opportunities in the sector from health and fitness to media, management and much more. Likewise there are many routes into the sector.

If you are interested in coaching try volunteering in youth and community sport and summer holiday schemes for children, and some of the many enrichment opportunities at Wellsway. Part-time work in leisure centres can help you gain valuable experience from an administration perspective and also develop your communication skills and work ethic.

Sport England in the ‘Economic value of sport in England Report’ (2013) report estimate that 2.3% of the UK workforce are employed in sport-related jobs.

Sports science graduates move onto a variety of roles from coaching to instructing, to teaching and health professions. Around 90% of such graduates are in employment or further training sixth months after graduation.

COMMENT The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is responsible for promoting British interests around the world. It employs around 14,000 staff through a network of posts in 160 countries.

The EU and UN are also massive employers in a range of international areas. You need to have an interest in international affairs and be willing to work abroad.

There are many ways to get into politics. Start by volunteering for local organisations, and get involved in the sixth form Debating Club.

Politics and International Relations can often be taken as joint degrees, and are often studied alongside History, Economics and many other subjects.
