Happy Labor Day to you all. It’s hard to believe that the official close of summer is upon us, the pools are closing and the kids are headed back to school. One good thing, there’s still plenty of racing to be done here in the district. The MX schedule runs strong with point races right into mid November. The 10 round PA State Hare Scramble Series will be wrapping up the end of this month but there’s still plenty of off road racing left, again running right thru the end of November. Speaking of points races, we’ve put a “Web Poll“ on our website, it’s just a short questionnaire we’ve posted in the hopes of gathering some general information about racing in our area. Two of the questions pertain to your thoughts on points races, it would really benefit everyone involved if you could spare a few minutes of your time to take the “Web Poll“ at www.motorcycleracingaction.com We thank you for your efforts. Last but not least, another Amateur National is in the books from Lorettas. MRA would like to congratulate Pasquale Morrocco from Vorhees, NJ on his perfect 6 moto sweep in the 125C stock and modified classes, a perfect score and two # 1 plates. And also congratulations to Fred Vertucci of VPE Racing – Fred, featured on this months cover took the # 1 plate in the senior 45+ division. We would like to congratulate all of the D-6 riders that rode at the ranch, you are all winners in my book. Until next time.

up in the Swiss Alps riding and racing Motorcycles. Frenchie started racing in France in the 80cc ranks in 1984, in 2 short years he had won his local district championship. By 1989 Greg and his family had moved to the island of St. Martin in the French West Indies. There his father opened a motorcycle dealership and they operated the only MX track on the Island. In 1990 Greg obtained his FIM License and competed in his 1st big race, The Grand Prix of Motocross in Venezuela, he finished an impressive 14th against the best in the world. In 1991 it was back to France to compete in the French Amateur National, a 3 day event, the result, 250 National MX Champion. In 1994 it happened, Frenchies first trip to America to race motocross, a friend he had met from NY while vacationing in St. Martin had invited him to come race in America. The next few years were spent racing and training between D-34, D-6 back home to France and training in California and St. Martin in the off season. In 1997 Greg had his best finish to date at an Outdoor National, 21st at Mt. A Tribute to Girl Racers MRA had the honor to meet some very dedicated young ladies last month at Sleepy Hollow MX Park. We wanted to feature the girls that come out and compete week in and week out at some of the local MX tracks. I’m sure we may have missed a few and we do apologize, if you see us at the races come up and say Hi to us and maybe we can get you in a future issue. These girls range in age from 5 to 15 and race both quads and motorcycles. All are there to have fun, some are there to hang out with their friends, others are there to beat the boys, but they are all there and competing in a great family sport. Hats off to Sleepy Hollow and their youth program, it was not to long ago that there were only a few girls out there competing. Sleepy has a separate mini track for both girls and boys alike to race at, it’s a great place to let your child get the feel of racing mx without having to deal with the obstacles of a full scale mx track. There are a ton of classes to choose from for just about every mini cycle or ATV made, this allows you to get your child started with out the expense of a full blown race bike. So if you would like to see these fine young ladies competing on a Sunday afternoon head on out to the Hollow. You can find their schedule in the pages of MRA or log on to www.sleepyhollowmotocross.com. Jim Bull MRA

Doublin Gap Motocross Park

Newburg, Pennsylvania – August 10th, 2003 Race Report by Matt Wozney / Holeshot Graphics

Page Sweeps Doublin Gap

Doublin Gap’s own Kameron Page swept two classes today at his home track.  He swept the 50cc (7-8) and 65cc (7-9) classes with 1-1 finishes. Today’s District 6 and 7 points race at Doublin Gap Motocross Park turned out to be a beautiful sunny day with near-perfect track conditions.  Also, running their own track points race, Doublin Gap, ran by the Yentzer family, was ready to offer its racers another exciting day of racing.  But there was one rider who made it look real easy on the challenging Doublin Gap track and that was Kameron Page. Moto 1 Start: Tyler Murphy (1) takes the holeshot in front of Kameron Page (84), Storm Sheckells (2j), and Austin Cox (01) in the 50cc (7-8) class.. Cobra/Kincaid Racing’s Page was dominant at his home track at Doublin Gap.  He swept the 50cc (7-8) class aboard his Cobra 50 and the 65cc (7-9) class aboard his Suzuki RM65.  With his experience at Doublin, he was able to win every moto easily by doing certain jumps that other riders had trouble negotiating with.  In the 50cc (7-8) class, Page was doubling jumps other 50cc riders weren’t even attempting to try.  He took the win over fellow Cobra rider #1 Tyler Murphy.  The West Virginia rider went 2-2 and stayed with Page most the day.  Taking third was the 2J KTM of Storm Sheckells with a 3-4 finish and finishing fourth was the fast Austin Cox, aboard his 01 KTM.  He had bad luck in his first moto but came back strong behind Murphy to take third in the second moto and finishing fourth overall with a 6-3 finish.  Rounding out the top five was the #3 of Thomas Coluzzi on his KTM.  He finished with a 5-6 tally. Kincaid Racing’s own Dillon Kincaid took the overall win in the 50cc Oil Injected aboard his Cobra.  He also took second overall in the 50cc (4-6) class. The 50cc Oil Injected class was a fun class to watch as little kids, aged between 4-8 years old, make their way around the rough and rutted Doublin Gap track.  Taking the overall win with a 1-2 finish was Kincaid Racing’s own #289 Dillon Kincaid.  Kincaid was able to put his Cobra PW3 machine on top and in front of the 3j of Dakota Harris, who took the second moto win and finished with a 3-1 finish aboard his KTM.  Third overall went to another KTM rider #41 Dillon Tyler, who finished with a 4-3.  Fourth overall went to also another KTM rider of Jacob Jones, who finished with a 2-6, on his #456 KTM.  And rounding out the top five was once again another KTM pilot of Dylan Blettner.  Blettner finished with a 6-5 finish.   Jacob Runkles (270) leads the start in the first moto of the 50cc (4-6) class. He never looked back and swept the class with a dominating 1-1 finish. The 50cc (4-6) saw some good close racing but the rider who was out front and sweeping the class was the 270 KTM of Jacob Runkles.  He was able to beat out 50cc Oil Injected winner Kincaid, who finished second overall with a 2-2, and the 110 KTM of Trentin Herrington, who went 6-3 in the class.  Taking fourth overall was Ryan Baxter, aboard his 107 Cobra, and he finished with a 4-5 tally.  Rounding out the top five was Jones on his Cobra CM50 with a 7-4 finish. Brandon Seibold (21x) leads the 85cc (7-11) group out of the first turn.  He is followed closely behind by Broc Schmelyun (2) and Alex Maldet (187).The 85cc (7-11) class was another very fast class today at Doublin Gap.  The rider who took the class easily was the 21x of Brandon Seibold.  Aboard his Yamaha, Seibold scored a 1-1 finish to take the overall.  He finished in front of Seibold was another Yamaha rider of Broc Schmelyun.  He finished with a solid 2-2 finish right behind Seibold.  Taking third overall was Suzuki pilot Dylan Brajkovich.  Brajkovich, who also won the 65cc (10-11) class on his KTM, finished with 3-3 in the 85cc (7-11) class. Taking fourth was Kawasaki rider Bill Windsor, who finished with a 5-4 finish, and taking the fifth spot was Derrick Grissinger, aboard his 99 Suzuki.

Happy Ramblers

Bobby Kinsley takes a 2nd in the 50 STK 7-8 Class

Spangler and Toth Swap Moto wins in Supermini Hanover, PA was the site for round # 10 of the District 6 Championship Points Series. It was also the day that the Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club got a break from the wet weather that has plagued their events all year long. The day awoke with bright sunshine and moderate temperatures, the crew from Happy had worked all week long and their track was in excellent shape for a full day of motocrossing. Close to 400 riders showed up to battle one another for the 4’ trophies sponsored by Action Motorsports of York. The race of the day was in the 25+ A division with Frenchie Pamart and Mike Bear of AMS swapping spots all day long. Pamart came out on top on this day but I’m sure you’ll see these two top D-6 riders going at it again in the weeks to come. The 30+ A race featured these same 2 riders with the same results. Other dual class winners on the day included Lowell Spangler and Garret Toth in the mini divisions and Yamaha of Camp Hills Jeremy Cook in the 125 and 250A classes. In amateur racing Taz Sabotka traveled from VA to win the 125c and school boy classes.

Flying Dutchmen MX FLYING DUTCHMEN MX was the scene for another go round with mother nature in early August. Although the rain held off on race day 5 inches of the wet stuff dumped on Pine Grove, PA just days prior to the event. I’ll give a big way to go to the track staff at the Dutchmen - even though the day started a little mushy I think they did a fine job preparing the track in the conditions they had to work with. What do you do with 5 more inches of water after the wet race season we’ve had here in the district? Close to 300 riders showed up to chase the win for the 5’ trophies sponsored by Dauberts Beer Distributor and BG’s Value Market. Way to go Dutchmen. Jim Bull MRA motocross mini track Overall # Brand

EVANSVILLE SUPERCROSS SUMMARY BY # 5J JOSH ROCKWELL ROUND 1 - JULY 26, 2003 In the 125c division heat race, the # 11 bike of Jake Feaster got a commanding lead on the # 99 of Jeff Yatsko. Every time Yatsko would real in Feaster the Yamaha 4 stroke rider would crack open another lead. The two battled the entire moto with Feaster coming out on top in the end. The main event looked like a replay of the 1st moto. Again, Feaster jumped out to a commanding lead with Yatsko being his only challenger. It looked like Yatsko was reeling in Feaster but in the end it was the # 11 bike taking the win by a three second margin. The 125 Expert division was led by a group of national caliber riders, they took to the track for a seven lap moto. Cook, Clark and Ginolfi battled all moto long but in the end took each other out, this opened the door and gave the heat win to # 44 Zach Feaster on his Yamaha 4 Stroke. In the main again it looked like a replay of the first heat with the win going to Jeremy Cook. The top 4 rounded out with Ginolfi, Johnson and Clark. I’d like to give honorable mentions to the person on the Husky. You stood out above the rest but could not shine due to bike problems all night long. In the 250 Expert race the # 924 of Clint Johnson took the holeshot and was able to hold on for the win. In the main event Ginolfi and Cook swapped spots in the opening laps but a mistake by Ginolfi allowed Cook to take the overall win followed by Johnson, Clark and Ginolfi. The most fun of the night was had by the pit bike racers. The # 1N BBR bike showed up and dominated both motos in this division. If you want to have a bunch of fun get in on this action.

ROUND 2 - AUGUST 9, 2003

With round 1 of the PA State Supercross series in the books a few weeks past, the second round went something like this. With a deep jet - black overcast sky looming over Evansville Raceway, the second round of the Sponsorhouse.com summer sx series went off with a certain calmness in the air. Everyone knew where he or she sat from the previous round and now everyone knew what to expect and they had now come back for more racing action. This is how the action went down outside of Berwick. Keeney Motorsports sponsored rider and last years district champ Casey Clark got the holeshot over the previous round winner Jeremy Cook in the 125A heat race. Clark put a sizable lead on Cook but by the last lap they were grinding footpegs and swapping jerseys. In the end it was Clark taking the win followed by Cook in a close second then Feaster and Nyzio. In the main it was again Clark getting the holeshot and the lead, but the hard charging Yamaha of Camp Hills Jeremy Cook was able to grab the lead. With about 3 laps to go Clark made an aggressive move shoving Cook high on the berm and took the lead and the overall win in the 125A class. Nyzio and Feaster rounded out the top four spots. In the 250A class the district favorites again took to the track in what would be a very exciting yet predictable race. Casey Clark again got the holeshot and led and won both the heat and main races. Although he won both he could not afford any mistakes because Yamaha of Camp Hills Jeremy cook was again hard at work trying to find his way around Clark. In the 125B Heat # 50S Stan Otto took the holeshot and ran away with the win. Michael Stover # 392 and Michael Pagano battled for the next two spots. In the main it was again Stan Otto grabbing the holeshot but the overall went to the # 86 of Derrick Crawford with Pagano and Stover taking third and fourth respectively. In 125C action the first round winner # 11 Jake Feaster took the holeshot and never relinquished the lead the entire heat race. With a first turn crash # 454 Bobby Stanton went from last up to 4th by the heat races end. He eventually finished out the night with a first in the main with Feaster taking second.

Upcoming Events Tentative Schedule (Please double check dates with your local track.)

In The Clutch Reactive Suspension By Andy Fleck & Al Carr

www.reactive-suspension.com The motor in your bike or ATV is made up of two major components. The engine which consists of the crankshaft, piston and cylinder is the part of the motor that creates the power, the second part is the transmission which transmits the power to the drive wheel(s) but in between these two components is a smaller but no less important component. The clutch. The clutch is comprised of the clutch basket, inner hub, pressure plate, drive (fiber) and driven (metal) plates and the springs. Together these components give you, the rider, the ability to disengage the engine from the transmission to aid in shifting, launching from the start gate and controlling drive out of corners. Common problems associated with clutches are slipping and dragging. Slipping is without a doubt the most common problem. It can be caused by gear oil that hasn’t been changed frequently enough and simply changing the gear oil will alleviate the problem. Gear box oils contain certain additives that assist the clutch in doing its job. After a period of time the heat and shearing forces in a tranny will use up these additives and the clutch will start to slip. As a general rule change a mineral based gear oil every two to three hours of hard riding and a synthetic every three to six. Worn clutch plates will also cause a clutch to slip. Your manual will give you a minimum thickness for the fiber plates usually around .115” I find this number to be immaterial as I have seen countless plates that measure in spec but still slip. If changing your oil does not fix a slipping clutch plan on replacing all the fibers and the springs, never install new plates with old springs. Also be aware of what material your driven plates are made of. The majority are steel but occasionally the factory see’s fit to install aluminum. Aluminum plates will require replacement very regularly as they are soft and will wear quickly. A dead give away that you have aluminum plates is your gear oil will turn gray as it becomes contaminated with aluminum particles. Several aftermarket companies offer replacement steel plates and I highly recommend them. An added benefit of running the steel plates is that they are heavier and will tend to make the engine torquier like adding a flywheel weight, this aint a bad thing. Lastly, always check the inner hub and pressure plate where the fiber plates bear against them, these surfaces should be perfectly flat, and lips you can detect are a sure sign of wear, replace them. A dragging clutch can be caused by several things. First a gear oil that is too thick, will cause a clutch to drag this only happens when the wrong oil is installed. Some people mistakenly install hypoid gear oil which is designed to run in shaft drive or differential systems. Always look for a gear oil that says it is designed for two stroke transmissions. If you use your clutch hard, over time the clutch basket will get grooved at the contact point of the fiber plates. When you pull in the clutch lever instead of the plates floating apart they will tend to favor the grooves which will force them together causing the clutch to drag. I would recommend in this situation that you replace the stock clutch basket with an aftermarket one like Hinson. Some people file the clutch basket to remove the grooves, this is a waste of time as the grooves will reappear very quickly since the filing will have cut through the anodizing leaving a softer surface and filing will also increase the distance between the baskets fingers giving the plates more room to gather momentum before seating harder against the basket. Aftermarket baskets are generally harder anodized and will resist grooving better. Aftermarket clutch plates sometimes requires a break in period before they will disengage completely, for this reason I always use OEM plates. Lastly, warped clutch plates can cause a clutch to drag. Generally this occurs if the clutch plates have been over heated, if the metal plates have turned blue they are probably warped. Some bikes have chronic clutch problems, some RM models are a perfect example. This is usually a design flaw in that some of the components do not have sufficient structural rigidity and deform under use. This is usually associated with a pressure plate and the bike magazines will report this in their testing, in situations like this look to aftermarket companies like Hinson for a replacement. During the course of a race you might notice that your clutch lever free play increases, this is due to the thermal expansion of the engine components, on some bikes it’s worse that others. The best cure for this problem is a Magura Hydraulic kit. The hydraulic unit will self adjust continuously completely eliminating the problem. These kits can be pricey but from experience I can tell you they are well worth the money. Reactive Suspension handles all the aftermarket clutch product lines as well as the MAGURA Hymec, if you need any of these components give us a call for the best prices.

Baer Blasts Field at Shippensburg ST By Len Breech Photos by Ben Breech SHIPPENSBURG, PA. JUL. 27

After dominating three Expert classes on a hot Sunday afternoon, one of the first things Shawn Baer said afterwards was, “I wish Raun (Wood) and Chris (Klinefelter) were here today instead of down at the Hot Shoe race in Georgia this afternoon, because my Battlefield Harley–Davidson/Pro Plates/ Metro Racing machine was really hooking up.”. He used the same Yamaha to win the 600 A, Sportsman and 250 A, leading John Lewis across the line in all three final. In the 250 A, Baer took the lead from Rick Winsett, Lewis and his uncle, Dallas Baer. Lewis got by Winsett off the fourth turn on lap two and started to pressure Baer. Coming off the final turn, Lewis tried to slip under Baer as they headed for the flag, but he came up a little short. The Sportsman final again saw Baer jetting into the lead, with Brian Phillips, Winsett, Lewis and Ryan Henderson fighting it out behind him. Lewis took third by the end of the opening lap. After beating on Phillips for several laps, Lewis slipped under him as they started the final lap. He did cut into the gap Baer had in that lap, but it wasn’t enough. Baer again took the lead at the start of the 600 A final, with Phillips and Lewis right behind. In this race, Lewis was battling a balky clutch in his Rotax. Once rolling, he gradually worked his way past Phillips a the start of the sixth lap and finished on Baer’s rear tire at the end. R. J. Hart was quickest off the line in the 600 B final, with Richard Heverly, Jonathan Jordan and Chris Davis behind. Jordan slipped under Heverly on the second lap, as the front two pulled away. Cory Texter took third on the sixth lap, while Jordan stayed right on Hart’s rear tire, but Hart held on for his first Amateur win. Jordan was quicker off the line in the 250 B final, with Hart, Brandon Robinson and Heverly right behind. Robinson slipped under Hart off the fourth turn on lap six and stayed close to Jordan to the end. Hayden Avery battled Evan Baer for the lead on the opening lap of the 85 class, but Avery slipped in front on the second lap. Avery kept in front to the end, with Baer on his rear tire. After getting his bike and himself caught in the rear tire of a fellow competitor on the start of the 40 + heat, Joe Dohm broke out his trusty Yamaha for the restart of the race. Dave Smith took the lead from Dohm, Chris Davis and Mike Keane at the start of the final. As they entered the third turn on lap two, Dohm slipped under Smith for the lead. Smith started to slip backwards in the following laps.
