Project 02: Crafting Cubes The intent of Crafting cubes using different materials was to enhance our ability to craft. It also tested our problemsolving skills in discovering what materials need certain fixtures to join. The collection of materials used consisted of chipboard, cardboard, foam core, basswood sticks and planes, plexiglass, and concrete. Along with having weekly practice to perfect our skills using different materials this project also called for perfecting our drafting skills.

Project 1: Site-Specific Intervention

Group Members: Colin Walsh, Skye Robinson, Katie Henes

The intent of this project was to design and construct a collaborative installation on the campus of Thomas Jefferson University. Once the site is selected an analysis drawing has begun, each member of your team will contribute to the design of the final project, or site intervention. This process should include discussion, sketching, photography, and model building. Keep in mind what materials to use and not to extend the five- dollar spending budget. Finally, document how passing students interact with your final design and if they comprehend your intent.

Project 2: Topological Transformations The intent of this project was the perfect and practice skills in crafting.

In Project 2, students had to pick an object to make models based on.

Accuracy in measurements was the key focus to recreate the chosen object. While keeping in mind to keep the craft consistent and maintaining clean cuts through the cardboard.

Project 3: Creating, Pattern, Color, and Texture The goal of the project was to create a versatile stamp that could be transformed into elaborate patterns. It concentrates on helping a student discover how patterns and color theory can interact to create something new. Additionally testing how creases/folds within a piece of paper communicate color depending on shadows and relationship to surrounding colors. My intent was, to begin with, a simple stamp design and see how intricate of a pattern I could create.

The intent of this project was for students to choose a textile and then create a visual Hierarchy. This projects introduced the student to the visual language of 2D representation and then translating it to 3D. Within this projects students were able to experiment with materials while meeting the requirements of size 8x8x8 for the final model. It also helped to develop the student's awareness of the relationship between solid vs void space and lines vs planes.

Project 5A+B: Making Space Site Model

The students began by Deconstructing art and the Philadelphia Art Museum and choosing a painting to work with. Students then had to thoroughly study their painting and create Diagrams to help them break it apart. Using the diagrams than to create a Bas Relief that translates the most important parts of the painting by bending, cutting, and folding. Once the Bas Relief is complete students were required to use a strong source of light to photograph an image to use in creating a site. The site is created using the 3/8" scale and made of plywood, pine, or any other wood. Once the site is created students had to read Invisible cities and choose one to create an embassy of space for. The intent when creating this space is the treat their city like a client while meeting the general requirements of measurements.

Semester Reflection Over the course of Design 1 at Jefferson, I learned the importance of craft, modeling, community, and the process of creating design. Learning how to craft precise study models could only be achieved with practice which the projects in this class provided. While learning about how to problem-solve while using new materials and equipment and asking for help along the way. Seeing progress is also important and Project 02 of constructing cubes is a great way to track the process of craftmanship improving. Additionally, in design, the importance of creating study models that allow room for experimental thinking before building the final model is also implemented. Study models also help show peers the process of getting to your final model which is a great way to understand how a designer creates work. The most important thing in this design class was the ability to create a community in which ideas are shared and critiqued in the most beneficial way. A good environment and community are important in order to allow a designer to confidently talk about their work and share it with others.
