HISTORY OF MON RIVER ARTS YOUTH THEATRE
“A dream is a wish your heart makes” is a song from Cinderella that could sum up the children’s drama program at Mon River Arts. Executive Director Lori Kolodziej could only dream of a Children’s Drama Troupe years before she, and a group of dedicated parents and volunteers, were able to make it a reality.
This year marks the 17th anniversary of Children’s Theatre productions at the Grand Theatre. Back in the spring of 2007, Musical Theatre students at the Grand were looking for a way to continue their theatre experience, stay together as a group, and showcase their talents on a regular basis. In June of 2007 a group of 28 kids starred in their first production of Jungle Book. Since that initial production, MRA Youth theatre has produced 38 shows including Alice in Wonderland (2007 & 2014), Cinderella (2008), Oz! (2009), Princess and the Pea (2009), Aladdin, Jr. (2010 & 2018), Guys and Dolls (2010), Charlotte's Web (2011), Little Luncheonette of Terror (2011), There’s A Monster In My Closet (2011), Anything Goes (2012), The Rockin Tale of Snow White (2012), Once On This Island, Jr. (2012), Seussical, Jr. (2012), Oklahoma (2012), The Little Mermaid, Jr. (2013), Music Man (2013), Willy Wonka, Jr. (2013), My Son Pinocchio, Jr. (2014), Bye Bye Birdie (2014), Beauty and the Beast, Jr. (2015 & 2023), Peter Pan, Jr. (2015), Pajama Game (2015), All Shook Up (2016), Bugsy Malone, Jr. (2016), High School Musical, Jr. (2016), Into the Woods, Jr. (2017), Treasure Island (2017), Lion King, Jr. (2018), Shrek, Jr. (2019), Elf, Jr. (2019), Mary Poppins, Jr. (2020), Fame, Jr. (2021), Moana, Jr. (2022), Frozen, Jr. (2022), and Mean Girls, Jr. (2023).
Children’s Theatre is alive and well at Mon River Arts, thanks to continued support from parents, volunteers, and a dedicated staff. One of the real benefits of the Children’s Theatre program here is the opportunity to meet and act with kids from many different schools. The Finding Nemo, Jr. cast includes 32 elementary, middle and high school students from the school districts of Bethel Park, Belle Vernon, Elizabeth Forward, Gateway, Ringgold, West Jefferson Hills and private schools St. Sebastian and Lincoln Park Performing Arts.
What’s With The Song At The End Of All Children’s Theatre Shows?
The song “Family” from the show Dreamgirls has been a tradition since former Director Richard Hinkleman first introduced it in 2008. It is a reminder to all program participants that once you enter the Grand Theatre, you become a part of a family that is much larger than your own– and a place where you always belong. It is often sung with mixed emotions at the end of the show. But it is also sung in celebration and in praise, as it represents friendships that will last a lifetime for the actors who sing it.
We are incredibly proud of our Joya Castagnola! We love to see you shine!
