President's Address On behalf of Women Entering Business (WEB), I am extremely proud to share our 2023 Graduate and Careers Guide with you.

I would like to extend my gratitude and appreciation to the 2023 Executive Committee who have worked extremely hard in order for this publication to come into fruition. The guide consists of a variety of insights, interviews and opportunities which will allow you to explore the intricacies associated with the transition from university to the workforce and taking the first step in your professional career.

At WEB, we strive to provide our members with a multiplicity of opportunities to develop the skills and self-confidence to successfully join the workforce and to realise their full potential. WEB is a community of like-minded students who work towards promoting a common goal of empowering future leaders and not just women alone. As such, we aim to to champion students of any gender to promote gender equality and empower future leaders.

Your employability journey begins now (technically, it has already begun!).

It is not just your studies and your marks now, followed by internships and jobs later. It’s your journey up to this point, and it’s your journey that you choose now – every path, every change, every two steps up, and every one step down.

Get involved in anything and everything on campus, and beyond. Student society events (if you’re reading this, you’re already involved with WEB. Well done!), the Lucy Mentoring Program, Employability Conferences, Employability Connect, The Global Leadership program, ambassadors, buddies, volunteering on campus, and volunteering in the community. The Importance of Failure A QUEEN IS NOT AFRAID TO FAIL

Just as Oprah Winfrey says, failure should not be something to be afraid of; instead, we should embrace it and learn to overcome this by accepting failure. While failure can be a complex topic for many, society views it as a negative reflection. As students, we should learn to accept the importance of failure sooner, leading us to grow and experience new opportunities.

Whether failing a simple test or a critical task, it is crucial to understand that failing can lead to a better experience and opportunity. With research, it has been said that are many skills built from failure, which include: resilience, flexibility, humility, innovation and creation, and motivation.

As students, failing can be complex and challenging at times. Here are some tips to overcome and conquer failure:

LEARN TO ACCEPT FAILURE Accept it as a positive learning experience- while it can be disheartening, it should be taken as a lesson to improve.

DON'T GIVE UP

ADOPT A GROWTH MINDSET Failure can impact and happen to anyone, whether having a busy schedule from uni or work to having an idle lifestyle. It is essential to maintain a good and positive mindset. As mentioned in the previous step, staying positive will encourage you to remember your end goal. Vision boards can be used to motivate you and inspire you.

As a university student, it can be easy to lose motivation, but having a positive mindset and a supportive group of people will also benefit your progress and lead to overcoming failure.

BE COURAGEOUS Failing once, twice or even three times can be difficult on yourself but remember you tried your best. Trying again after you fail takes courage and strength. It's essential to try your best, and now that you have failed the first time, you can learn what can be done right.

From a young student to a successful businesswoman, failure can happen to anyone. As Anna Wintour says, "It's important to have setbacks because that is the reality of life". This is why normalising and learning the importance of failure can benefit you and lead to better opportunities.

Marilyn Monroe, Oprah Winfrey, Vera Wang, and J.K Rowling are some examples of influential women who failed earlier in life before becoming very successful. These women have changed our perspectives on how to be confident and influential individuals.

Acceptance of Failure.

While we discussed the importance of failure, tips to overcome and some examples by remarkable women in our society, the final step in learning to overcome failure is acceptance.

This last part is a personal journey; each individual may have different experiences and situations that may affect them. Support is often not physically there to keep you going, but having an inspirational figure like some of the women discussed earlier can help you keep yourself on the right track. Especially as students, transitioning to university can be challenging and different from high school or experiencing life as an international student in Australia.

SO, DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? Nailing the question section of job interviews While we have all heard tips and tricks for preparing for and the experiences during the interview, we have yet to discuss the importance of asking questions afterwards. This can have a positive effect on your hireability and change your position amongst other interviewees. Interviewers say that answering NO to "Do you have any questions?", after an interview is a missed opportunity, and this can be for several reasons. The last question can leave a lasting impression of yourself to the interviewer, so saying no can affect your chances of hearing back from the position and company.

Whether it is preparing for a graduate position or a casual retail role, interviews can be daunting and can even leave you feeling anxious. Here's why asking questions during and after an interview can leave you feeling better and likely increase your chance of a call-back.

Some key questions that will make you stand out amongst interviewees and gain a competitive advantage: Please tell me more about the daily duties of this role.

Not only do you get an insight into the position, but it also makes a good impression that you are interested. Use this to your advantage, and ask specific and unique questions to help you understand the type of workplace and if it is the right fit for you.

What is corporate culture like?

With a question like this, you can understand the environment of the role and culture within the team. It is vital to work in an environment where you are respected and comfortable; with this question, you can also see how the interviewer handles and answers the question. The interviewers usually discuss the benefits you can receive whilst working in this environment.

What are some examples of challenges that I could face in this position?

Understanding how people overcome their workplace challenges can help you know where your skills can be required.

Demonstrates interest and engagement The last impression can be as important as the first, so asking crucial questions can help improve your impression for the interviewer and increase your chance of success. The benefit of this is that the interviewer will perceive you as interested and engaged, leading to a great first impression 2. Gain insights into the company and role.

Once the interview is completed and you leave, you may wonder if this job is right for you or if what was discussed matches with the job description. Most times, we must remember that even if what is displayed in the job description is broad, asking detailed questions about the role will help you better understand whether this job is right for you.

3. It gives a competitive advantage.

In your final year of university, you will need to prepare for interviews for internships and graduate positions. This is going to be a competitive environment when you have many peers from different backgrounds applying for the same position. The benefit of implementing these tips will give you a competitive advantage and a boost to your application. Being unique and differentiating yourself is just as crucial as showcasing your skill sets.

You can personally evaluate company culture by the answers that are given.

NEGOTIATING YOUR SALARY 101 .

Learning how to advocate for yourself when asking for a pay rise is a great skill to learn. This skill is naturally instilled as you become more confident in yourself as an employee.

However, a lot of young professionals starting out their careers choose stability and safety over having challenging conversations. Understanding how you can leverage your value and experience is crucial to your career progression. WEB is here to help you nail the pay rise conversation!

1. SELF-REFLECTION IS UNDERRATED Before you ask for a $10,000 pay rise from your employer, it is essential to ask yourself “Have I been contributing enough to my role?” Unfortunately, a lot of employees think a pay rise is directly related to the time you spend at the company. In normal circumstances, the pay given to you reflects the value you bring to the company. So the reality is that even if you work at a company for 2 years, if you are not fulfilling your responsibilities and performing less than expected, your employer is unlikely to entertain a pay rise conversation. This is why conducting a thorough self-reflection before approaching your manager is highly important.

2. RESEARCH AND FACTS ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND An essential step to negotiating a pay rise is understanding your value, experiences and the market. Platforms like HAYS and Glassdoor offer an easy way to research how much your role pays at different companies in the market. Along with having an idea of the market rate, it is important to write down how you have conducted your responsibilities and if there was a time you exceeded those expectations and outperformed. Having someone to talk to is also a great way to gauge an understanding of where to go.

Reaching out to someone who is in the

same role as you and being paid more, or someone who was in your role and is now ahead of you in their career, can be really helpful when structuring your pitch.

Remember, hard facts are difficult to dispute, so the more of them you have, the better it is for you.

3. BE FLEXIBLE WITH YOUR MANAGER Your manager will most likely have a lot of competing responsibilities. They might even have a set budget for the year so asking for a pay rise when they have constrained resources can be challenging.

A great way to navigate this is to approach your manager with a range of the pay rise you want and ask them for a suitable time to discuss your performance and pay. It can be really beneficial to have a high rate, middle rate and low rate of the market pay.

This way you provide your manager with a number to work with. For example, if you are earning $60,000 a year, giving your manager a range of $70-75,000 can provide them the flexibility to work around budgets and resources.

4. DOES THE SIZE OF THE BUSINESS MATTER? Sometimes the business you work for can have an effect on your pay rise negotiations.

For example, a business with a profit margin in the hundreds of millions compared to one with millions can

NEGOTIATING YOUR SALARY 101 . significantly affect the business’s capacity to provide you with a pay rise. A small business will have less resources to work with and giving you a pay rise might be a conversation they would rather postpone.

You could either stay and wait the period out or leave for better possibilities and pay.

The reality is that even if your culture, values and goals align with the company, if you are not getting paid what you think you deserve then there is a separation in the way the company is serving you and the ways you are serving them.

5. IS IT TIME FOR A CAREER CHANGE? Careers are starting to become non-linear, which means that they no longer go from point A to point B. Rather it has become an interconnected web of possibilities. You can now jump from your current position to one in a completely different industry.

However, when do you know that it’s the right time? Usually with fixed pay industries, it can be extremely difficult to navigate a pay rise since you don’t have the ability to earn more. For example, working as a sales assistant will normally provide you with a minimum wage so how do you progress if you can’t ask for a pay increase? You change careers. Going towards a managerial role or some role which is an extension of your current skills can help you map out your career progression. It is essential to have that map ready so you can learn the important skills needed and learn the way you can leverage them to get the role and pay you want.

Negotiating a pay rise can seem challenging to navigate. Remember to always understand your value, needs and the business’s capacity to grant you those needs. There is absolutely no shame in moving away when a role does not serve your pay goals or when you feel stunted in your growth. Having the self-confidence to advocate for yourself is bound to provide you with amazing opportunities and success!

IMPACT OF AI ON FUTURE CAREERS

Over the past decade, the usage of artificial intelligence (AI) for everyday tasks has grown exponentially, and one prime example of this is ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI. ChatGPT is a popular generative AI currently used by over a billion users for tasks such as coding and writing. The rapid adoption of AI can be seen in the fact that ChatGPT reached its 100 millionth user in just 60 days. A recent Stanford University report further marks the impressive progress made in the development of AI technology showing that between 2015 and 2021 was an increase of 30-fold in AI patents. AI’s rapid popularisation in its ability to perform a wide range of tasks including document translation and information retrieval in an efficient manner displays the possibility of AI’s impact on future careers.

Negative Predicament on AI One of the negative predicaments, are the concerns that AI will reduce the job market, negatively impacting employment. A research done by Frey and Osborne, explored this issue by finding that almost half of US employment would be at risk of losing jobs to automation in the coming decade, especially service occupations. An issue also seen in Australia for example, the popularisation of Scan&Go, an AIpowered self-checkout in Woolworths and Coles which has replaced employees.

Acemoglu and Restrepo in 2017 found that excessive automation can negatively affect the labour market due to weak productivity and reinstatement effects.

Moreover, according to a recent report by Goldman Sachs, AI has the potential to automate a significant portion of administrative, legal, and engineering jobs in the US. The report estimated that 46% of administrative positions, 44% of legal positions, and 37% of engineering jobs could be replaced by AI. Globally, the report found that 18% of jobs could be automated by AI. Yet this significant reduction in the job market is tackled by the positive predicaments on AI.

Impact of AI on future careers

Positive Predicament on AI Others have high hopes for the impact of AI on the job market. Some believe that the benefits of increased productivity and job creation will outweigh any losses due to automation. In fact, some experts predict that as many as 90 million new jobs could be created by AI and robotics by 2025. However, it's important to note that there may still be a net loss of jobs due to these technological advancements. But while the World Economic Forum has estimated that while AI could take away 85 million jobs worldwide by 2025, it could also create 97 million new jobs in industries such as digital marketing, big data, machine learning and information security .

Furthermore, Lawrence suggests that AI automation is not expected to have a negative impact on the employment market due to its substantial reinstatement effect. This would offset the negative direct effects of substitution in the labour market as it is believed that automation is likely to transform work rather than eliminate it. In contrast to other studies that have found larger negative effects, a 2016 research paper, The Risk of Automation for Jobs in OECD Countries estimated that only 9% of jobs in the UK are vulnerable to automation in the next decade. The research paper stated rather transformation is more likely to occur, as 35% of jobs are expected to modify significantly within the next two decades.

Influence on the Job Market AI’s potential is widely recognised to enhance productivity and promote growth, thanks to its ability to process and analyse large amounts of data which can help businesses operate more efficiently. A reason why by 2030, 70% of companies are expected to adopt at least one form of AI technology, which according to the McKinsey Global Institute will cause an estimation of a 14% boost in global GDP by 2030.

Overall thoughts on the future of AI Experts expect AI to have a significant impact on future careers and the world’s economy, however there is a divide on its effect.

Hence, some experts are uncertain such as Jagjit Chadha from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research stated that the overall influence of AI will depend on various factors, such as “which policies are adopted” and the release of “new ideas”, making it impossible to determine its effects with certainty. Further reinstated by Andrea Ferrero from the University of Oxford, “The implications for economic growth overall are highly uncertain in my view”.

WEB holds various networking events each semester that are a great way to meet new people and learn more about the business industry. This year’s events included the Business Breakfast Networking, which featured representatives from CitiBank, Grant Samuel and CA ANZ. These are great opportunities to connect with people from the industry and learn more about internships and graduate opportunities while deepening your understanding of the different career pathways after graduation. Another event was the Happy Hour with WEB, a fun way to socialise and meet like-minded individuals at the start of the semester. Overall, networking is a great way to broaden your horizon while expanding your social circle.

Be genuinely interested in whomever you are speaking to (e.g. active listening).

Ask questions! It is a great way to get answers to your concerns while showing genuine interest, especially if you did research beforehand.

It is best to be yourself and speak honestly and truthfully about your work, aspirations, and what you want from your current job and the profession.

Set up a Linkedin account to use as a way to exchange contacts (Linkedin is a popular social networking site specifically designed for the corporate community).

Networking Don’ts Don’t wait for someone to start a conversation.

It can be intimidating to be the one to approach and start a conversation. However, it’s excellent to take the initiative and be able to engage with someone you have an interest in.

Absence of positive body language (such as avoidant eye contact, having a disinterested expression or standing around and looking at your phone) Don’t just talk about yourself; show sincerity by asking questions about the other person, such as what they do.

The American Bar Association notes that women now constitute about 38% of the legal profession in the United States, a notable increase from the past decades. In addition, the percentage of female law school graduates has surged to approximately 50%, indicating a promising trend of gender balance in the legal field.

Women's influence in finance is steadily expanding, with their strengths in financial management becoming more evident. A survey by the CFA Institute revealed that women are more likely to emphasise ethical considerations in their investment strategies, a trait that aligns with the industry's shift towards responsible investing.

Moreover, according to a report by Deloitte, women control nearly 40% of global private wealth, highlighting their growing role in the financial sector.

Consulting has become a magnet for women looking to leverage their strategic insights.

The National Association for Female Executives found that women accounted for 44% of management, business, and financial consulting services.

Tackling Gender Income Disparity

Through Micro-Investing The gender income disparity has long been an issue women have had to face. While opportunities for working women have increased substantially, income disparity still remains a topic all of us encounter time and time again. According to a report by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency Australia, for every $1 a man earns, a woman makes 77.2 cents, and over the course of a year this accumulates to around $25,596. This begs the question: is there something women can do to combat this inequality?

When we examine the causes why women are under-compensated, it can be traced back to a few reasons. The most prominent being that women are the primary caregivers for their families. Thus when women choose to drop out of the labour force, it results in loss of work experience and negatively impacts salaries and benefits for women choosing to return to the workplace.

This income disparity slowly gets compounded and results in women having significantly less money saved for their retirement compared to their male counterparts. According to the Australian Human Rights Commission, the average superannuation payout for women is a third of the payout for men, $37,000 compared with $110,000.

Is the System Rigged?

Another reason women earn less than men is because they are discriminately pushed into caregiving careers.

One study found that workers requiring higher levels of caregiving earn lower salaries compared to workers with the same skills but less caregiving, thereby disproportionately affecting the income earned by women.

While gender income disparity can be a depressing issue, we have tools like microinvesting at your disposal to counteract and navigate such discriminatory roadblocks.

Micro-investing offers an opportunity for low income earners and workers with inconsistent income to explore the stock market without extreme risks and costs.

How micro-investing provides financial and emotional freedom One common misconception women have about investing is that it is extremely risky and not worth it. Thus, they either lose out on considerable earnings by not investing or take a lengthy amount of time to educate themselves so they can feel fully equipped to tackle the investing landscape. The reality is you don’t need to know all the ins and outs of investing. While knowledge is amazing to have and we do recommend having a good grasp of where and what you invest in, waiting for the perfect opportunity that might not happen can immensely hurt your chances of making your money work for you, not the other way around. With financial freedom also comes emotional freedom. While money doesn’t necessarily bring happiness, it can provide stability and the ability to cover all your needs, so you can focus on pursuing your hobbies and passions! Financial freedom can allow us to retire early and really focus on the things that bring us joy.

Is Micro-investing really ‘Micro’?

Long gone are the days where you had to hire a broker to go to the stock market to buy and sell shares on your behalf. Now, you can easily invest in shares through simple mobile apps.

Platforms like Spaceship Voyager, Raiz, Sharesies and many others have made it easier than ever to start your investing journey. The starting capital when investing can be as little as $5, and the fees associated with it are an extremely low percentage of your portfolio. The goal is that investing shouldn’t have to break your bank. Raiz, in particular, contains a feature called the round-up. This is where it rounds up your expenses and invests it in the stock market.

For example, if you purchased a coffee for $4.50, Raiz will take $0.50 from your linked bank account and invest it in the stock market on your behalf. The great part is that it is all automatic! So contrary to popular belief, you don’t need thousands of dollars to start investing. Down the line, if the platform isn’t working for you or you don’t like their options, you can always change brokers, you are never locked in.

Where to go from here?

Investing is unlike what you see in the movies, it is gradual and boring. The best performing stocks are usually your stable, everyday companies. Remember, consistency is key!

The more consistent you are with your investing, the better it will be for your future portfolio. If you ever get stuck figuring out how and what to invest in, there are tons of online articles and podcasts to help you get started. Micro-investing is a really helpful tool to combat gender income disparity and discrimination, but it shouldn’t be your only one! Investing Practices of Women Women have generally been better at investing than men. When we take a look at their investing habits, we find that they outperform their male counterparts time and time again. A study by Warwick Business School, showed that men’s investments outperformed the FTSE 100 (a market index) by 0.14%. While the women’s investments outperformed the FTSE 100 by 1.94%. The study shows that women are more likely to make sound decisions, favouring buying and holding stocks compared to the riskier day trading.

Currently, I’m the Head of Finance for Milkrun (previously known as Metro60), which is a Woolworths incubated start-up that delivers groceries within minutes. Having started my career as a PwC grad in audit, I joined Woolworths as an internal auditor 14 years ago. Since then, I’ve had a number of roles including Finance and Operations Director for a drinks business in China, FP&A at Endeavour Drinks, and Finance lead supporting store innovation and transformation across the group.

ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE IS STILL A VERY MALE DOMINATED INDUSTRY. DID YOU FIND YOURSELF ON THE END OF SOMEONE'S MANSPLAIN AND HOW DID YOU HANDLE IT? I’ve certainly worked with difficult people, but it’s not limited to gender or any other stereotypes. Often these cynical voices exist because I haven’t yet gained their trust and respect. So as a general rule, I always ensure that my team and I produce high quality work that we are proud of. Diligence begets confidence, which is key to owning any situation with self assurance.

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO INFORM WOMEN ENTERING THE ACCOUNTING SECTOR?

I think women in the workplace tend to be less confident than men. Like many, I spent a long time trying to be “well rounded”, focusing on fixing my shortcomings versus playing to my strengths, which actually made me less effective. So I would recommend that women in particular, work on building self confidence and discover what makes them unique to start forging their personal brand.

Another important thing is networking. Get involved in non BAU projects that increase your visibility outside of your immediate team and seek out sponsors and mentors who have an interest in your development.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR ACCOUNTANTS FRESH OUT OF UNIVERSITY WHO HAVEN’T LANDED THE JOBS THEY WERE PLANNING/HOPING FOR? The first few years don’t matter as much as you think (chances are, you’ll be working for another 40-50 years!). Look for roles or projects that broaden your experience and continue to challenge yourself to gain new skills. As someone whose career did not follow a linear progression, I believe there is something to gain from every job, even if it’s not apparent at the time. Experience is cumulative and capabilities are transferable.

Focus on building your arsenal of skills and the opportunities will come.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO BE A GOOD LEADER AND TO INSPIRE OTHER WOMEN? I love the camaraderie of a team that is energised, engaged and driven to achieve a common purpose. It’s the best feeling when you’re achieving and making an impact with people you can have fun with. So I’m inspired to make others feel the same way. We are starting to see more and more women in leadership roles, and that’s especially true in Woolworths. I feel this has had a tremendous positive impact for women to see themselves represented and feel empowered to strive for more. This has definitely inspired me to pay it forward to the next generation of leaders.

THE GENDER PAY GAP REMAINS AN ISSUE IN THE BUSINESS SECTOR FOR WOMEN BUT ALSO FOR WOMEN IN THE ACCOUNTING SECTOR. IS THERE A PARTICULAR APPROACH YOU THINK WOMEN SHOULD TAKE WHEN NEGOTIATING THEIR SALARY? I think you should always negotiate because “if you don’t ask, you don’t get”, and it’s easier to do this when moving into a new role. However, be mindful that it needs to be reasonable and considered. By that I mean, how does your salary compare to the market rate? If you’re being paid at market, are there ways you justify the additional value that you bring to the job? Once you’ve done your homework, be confident and respectful in your approach - you might be surprised at the success rate!

WHAT ARE SOME TIPS FOR ACCOUNTING STUDENTS ABOUT TO GRADUATE? Accounting students have many career options to choose from across practice and industry. Having experienced both, I’d say PwC laid a great foundation for me - the experience was very structured and professional, heavy on training and development and exposed me to a wide variety of companies and industries. However, for those who want to get their hands dirty with exposure to how a business operates, then industry jobs may be more suitable.

Research the different graduate programs to see what resonates with you - consider the industry, the company culture, and the potential for growth. Apply widely because often you get insight into the company during the interview process and this may change your initial impression. Case interview are a big part of our recruitment process Our recruitment process involves an introductory interview with a member of the talent team, then case interviews with our consulting team. These interviews include verbal and written case studies that test candidates on their critical thinking skills, including problem-solving, maths and communication.

In a case interview, you are presented with a hypothetical Nous project, including details about a client’s problem.

You will need to review the information, analyse the data, and provide recommendations on next steps.

There is a method to solving cases, and practice will set you up for success. Each case and each interviewer is unique, so it is important to listen to the information before diving into your response.

There are several types of case questions A case interview will test your responses on a range of questions. Knowing what type of question you are being asked will help you to give your best response.

Situation questions. These questions test your listening skills and reveal whether you are making sure you

understand a problem before trying to solve it.

2.

Framework questions. These questions test your ability to develop a custom framework by extracting the main elements from the case and breaking them down into components. You need to organise your thoughts and explain your thinking to the interviewer. Once you have established your framework, your interviewer may ask you to identify the root cause of the issue faced by your client.

3.

Quantitative questions. These questions require you to solve quantitative questions with data. There are two types of quantitative questions: in some you will be provided with data (usually in the form of graphs and tables); and in others you are not provided with any data and need to make assumptions.

4.

Creativity questions. These questions are open-ended; there are no right or wrong answers. These questions test your ability to generate new ideas and solutions, in a structured way.

Recommendation question. These questions require you to summarise your findings and to explain what the

client should do.

What attracted you to Grant Samuel?

The chance to apply for an internship in a highly coveted industry with a well-regarded company is something that I could not turn down. The responsibilities outlined and skills required also attracted me to the program, as they directly aligned with my educational level and previous experience. This internship also presented itself as a great way for university students to learn about the industry and determine whether this is a suitable career path for them. By undertaking the internship, it clarified many questions and helped me to explore the opportunities available within the Corporate Advisory sphere.

Was the internship in line with your expectations?

Despite undertaking internships and PACE programs previously, the Women in Banking Internship program exceeded all expectations. Grant Samuel encouraged me to push past my comfort zone and learn at my maximum capacity. Rather than being the stereotypical intern fetching coffees, I was a valuable member of the team who sat in on client calls, prepared company presentations and had responsibility over project workstreams. The development I experienced during this time exceeded any expectations I held towards undertaking a typical part-time internship.

Discuss some of the tasks and responsibilities you were given.

I am very grateful that all work was connected to live deals – giving valuable and relevant experience. Within these deals, my tasks ranged from research, data room management, presentation building and Q&A management. I worked on information memorandums, learned about stakeholder management, navigated data rooms and even learned shortcuts in Excel and PowerPoint. I attended meetings with senior stakeholders externally and was an active part of discussions with my deal teams. The work also extended across multiple sectors, as the team aims to provide interns with a variety of experience.

What were the most rewarding aspects of your role?

Feeling like a valuable member of the team! It is really rewarding as a university student to be involved in a live deal with a team of experienced and interesting bankers. The problem solving sessions and ownership over workstreams made me feel like a meaningful part of the deal teams. This close proximity to seniors and clients facilitates the ultimate learning environment. Ownership over work streams is also very helpful in building your skills.

Best piece of advice you received from colleagues at Grant Samuel?

The advice which truly transformed my experience was to be proactive. If you are engaging with others, reviewing your work, thinking ahead, and acting upon your own initiative, it places you in the best position to gain the most from the internship experience. What advice would you give other women who will undergo the internship program?

This may seem like an intimidating industry, with a limited presence of women, but I can assure you that you will not regret undertaking this program. Grant Samuel is part of the change within industry, encouraging a diverse range of people to pursue their passion in finance and recognising the power of diverse thinking. The colleagues are supportive and encouraging. By entering the industry and pursuing your passions, you are encouraging further women after you to take the leap.
