General Instruments Used in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

In this article we will list out the different types of neonatal intensive care unit equipment 1. Bililights – It is a bright blue fluorescent lights used to treat jaundice, it is placed over a baby incubator.

2. Blood pressure monitor – A machine which is connected to a small blood pressure cuff wrapped around your baby's arm or leg.

3. Cardiopulmonary monitor - This monitor is used to track baby’s heart and breathing rates by attaching a small adhesive monitoring pads on the chest of the baby.

4. Central line – central line is a small plastic tube inserted into a large blood vessel.

Inserted with an intention to draw blood through the central line or use it to give your baby medicine or fluids.

5. Continuous positive airway pressure (C-PAP) – With C-PAP Air is delivered to a baby's lungs either through small tubes in the baby's nose or through a tube inserted into her windpipe.

6. Endotracheal tube - This small plastic tube is inserted through a baby's nose or mouth down into the trachea. The tube is attached to a ventilator (respirator), which can either help a baby breathe or breathe for her.

7. Incubator- A clear plastic box, which keeps them warm and protects them from

germs and noise.

8. Intravenous (IV) line- IV is a very small needle or tube into a tiny vein in the baby's

hand, foot, arm, leg, or scalp receives (intravenously).

9. Nasal cannula or nasal prongs - A small plastic tubes fit into your baby's nostrils to deliver oxygen.

10. Oxygen hood - A clear plastic box that fits over the baby's head and supplies her with oxygen.

11. Pulse oximeter - A Small U-shaped device that's wrapped around your baby's foot or hand and secured with a stretchy bandage.

12. Radiant warmer - This open bed has an overhead heating source that provides heat to your baby.

13. Umbilical catheter - Your baby's umbilical cord has two arteries and one vein, which end in her belly button. A thin tube (catheter) can be inserted into one of these vessels and threaded into the aorta, the largest artery supplying oxygen to the body.

14. Ventilator – It is a mechanical breathing machine that delivers warmed and humidified air to a baby's lungs. The sickest babies receive mechanical ventilation, meaning that the ventilator temporarily breathes for them while their lungs recover.
