The Training Division recently appointed its three lead instructors for the Defensive Tactics Program: Greenfield District Chief Probation Officer Antoinetta DeAngelis, Suffolk Juvenile Assistant Chief Probation Officer Kevin McClerklin, and Milford District Court Probation Officer Daniel Sullivan. The position is a volunteer role. All three lead trainers also serve on the Massachusetts Probation Service Safety Committee.

As lead instructors, DeAngelis, McClerklin, and Sullivan are responsible for assisting in the development and delivery of curriculum about safety-related topics, criteria and expectations for Defensive Tactics Team members, and coordinating instructors, locations, dates for orientation, defensive tactics regionally, and officer safety curriculum, according to Lead Program Manager of the Training Division Diane Richard who also serves as Defensive Tactics Program Coordinator. “The selected instructors have demonstrated a long time commitment to the safety of their fellow employees and will each play an important role as we continue to build the Defensive Tactics Program,� Richard said.

Probation Officers across the state joined local law enforcement and community members in celebrating the 34th Annual National Night Out on Tuesday, August 1. The Probation Officers shared information about court services during an evening of family-focused activities that featured musical performances, games, music, and food along with demonstrations such as a K-9 unit and the landing of a Black Hawk helicopter in Western Massachusetts.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

Fitchburg Community Corrections Recognition Ceremony in September The Fitchburg Community Corrections Center (CCC) and Fitchburg District Court will host a Recognition Ceremony on September 13, at 1 p.m., for more than 15 to 20 Level 3 center participants who made the transition from enhanced to standard supervision. The ceremony will be held at the Fitchburg District Court. Scheduled to attend are Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis and Fitchburg Mayor Stephen DiNatale.

Fitchburg’s ceremony is one of 12 held over the past year. This will be the last of the Recognition Ceremonies for this year, according to Executive Director Vincent Lorenti, JD. However, Lorenti said there are several Open House events scheduled in the coming weeks. Please check the MPS publications for details on these upcoming events.

Cultural Appreciation Day Countdown

Five Weeks Away to historical MPS event

The Massachusetts Probation Service’s (MPS’s) first Cultural Appreciation Day will take place on Thursday, September 28th, five weeks away.

This important celebration of culture, race, and gender diversity in our agency is the first observance of its kind in the state and by all counts, the nation.

“It is designed to infuse diversity and inclusion throughout MPS,” said Pamerson Ifill who together with First Deputy Commissioner Lydia Todd are leading this initiative.

To learn more about the celebration and the Cultural Proficiency efforts of our agency, check out the special Cultural Appreciation Day issue which spotlights some of the exciting events that are scheduled to take place.

If you are planning an event, please fill out an activity form and submit it no later than Thursday, August 31, to coria.holland@jud.state.ma.us. After submitting the form, kindly call 617-624-9319 to confirm receipt of the information.

All event information will be highlighted in a statewide listing which will be featured in the MPS Business Bulletin two weeks prior to Cultural Appreciation Day.

MPS’s Virtual Book Talk starts Thursday Book Talk, a virtual Book Club discussion group, launches Thursday, August 24, on the Courtyard. The Book Talk, which features Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by JD Vance, is being organized by Rhonda Greene, Boston Municipal CourtCentral Division Probation Officer. The virtual forum on the Courtyard was developed by Senior Web Manager Kevin Buckley and Web Administrator Christine Lamont.

Join Greene for an online “Cultural Conversation” about the book. You can share your thoughts with Greene and your Trial Court co-workers. Greene, who will guide the discussion, said you do not have to read the book to participate.

As we countdown the days to Cultural Appreciation Day on September 28, and ponder the Massachusetts Probation Service’s Cultural Proficiency efforts, members of the Trial Court community share their thoughts about how diversity and inclusiveness impacts our workplace and lives outside of work. The following are the reflections of Honorable Judge Bernadette L. Sabra of the New Bedford District :

Why is it important to have diversity and inclusiveness in the Trial Court?

In New Bedford District Court I see firsthand the benefits of having a courthouse staff that reflects the diversity of this community: employees and staff largely live in this same community and have a deep understanding of the diverse ethnic components that make this city vibrant. The people who come to court are a mixture of jurors, litigants, defendants and applicants for restraining orders, mental health and substance abuse assistance. But, they are also neighbors, acquaintances, and familiar faces for whom the staff has compassion and a desire to be of assistance. The community knows that they can come to this court and be treated with dignity and respect , and that they can communicate in their language, because the person across the counter reflects the community of which they are a part.

Probate & Family chiefs participate in team building exercises Two Probate & Family Chiefs retire

Probate & Family Chief Probation Officers gathered at the home of Norfolk Probate & Family Chief Probation Officer Donna Feinberg in July where they participated in fun, challenging team building exercises where they separated into three teams of four to square off on fun challenges such as building the tallest tower using uncooked spaghetti and marshmallows.

Two Probate & Family Chief Probation Officers—Hampshire Probate & Family Chief Pamela Eldridge and Essex Probate & Family Chief Brian Monahan—are retiring this month.

Eldridge, who first joined MPS as a Probation Officer in 1980, officially retired August 4 after 36 years of service.

Monahan started his career as a Probation Officer in 1977and is scheduled to retire August 31 after 39 years of service.

Swearing-In Ceremony scheduled for Norfolk Juvenile PO this Fall Norfolk Juvenile Probation Officer Kate McDonagh will be sworn-in at Norfolk Juvenile’s Dedham site on October 25.

McDonagh first came to the Massachusetts Probation Service as an intern in 2004 when she was a Criminal Justice major at the University of Massachusetts-Boston. She was hired as a support staff employee in 2005 and was appointed an Associate Probation Officer at the court in 2006. In December 2016, she was promoted to Probation Officer. McDonagh—who has worked in a dentist’s office and as a bank teller—originally wanted to be a dental hygienist and started this course of study at Northeastern University. After 9/11, McDonagh decided that she wanted to help people. She transferred to UMASS-Boston and switched her major to Criminal Justice.

“It’s been a long journey. This swearing-in is really special to me. It confirms that this is my life’s work,” she said.

Court administrator pays Franklin Superior Probation staff a visit

Court Administrator Jonathan Williams met with Franklin Superior Court Probation staff for 45 minutes on an August 3 visit to the new courthouse.

Franklin Superior Chief Probation Officer Sheila Moriarty said her staff was delighted to meet with Williams, who she described as “down-to-earth and engaging.” Williams, according to Moriarty, spent time talking to staff about the court’s “quirks and new technology” such as videoconferencing. The Court Administrator also had lunch with department heads and visited other court offices.
