PATRON This new 2017/18 Season of the MPO marks another important milestone, as we celebrate the MPO’s 20th Anniversary Season. I would like to thank the MPO for enriching our lives with its wonderful and inspiring performances over the years.

The MPO have been such an important part of our culture, presenting world class classical music and creating an alternative entertainment for Malaysians. Despite its young age, the MPO has impressed Malaysians and the international community with its excellent musicianship and artistry.

With the launch of the new Season, I am confident that the MPO will continue to deliver beautiful and timeless world-class performances through their special line-up of internationally renowned artists and conductors. I am particularly excited to note that Tengku Ahmad Irfan will be making his Malaysian conducting debut with the MPYO in its 10th anniversary concert.

More importantly, the MPO has contributed to the public through its various activities under the MPO Education & Outreach Programme and have done well in promoting and nurturing our talented young musicians through the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO).

My heartfelt thanks to PETRONAS, sponsors and our wonderful audiences; together, you have enabled the MPO to showcase their talent and virtuosity, while at the same time, inspiring and enriching the lives of those we touch.

CHAIRMAN It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 2017/18 Season as the MPO celebrates its 20th Anniversary Season.

Over the years we have had the honour and privilege of showcasing numerous great performances, hosting world-class orchestras and collaborating with various internationally-acclaimed artists and conductors.

The 2017/18 Season promises another season of exciting concerts featuring the MPO in collaboration with well-known guest conductors and soloists. Acclaimed conductors Stéphane Denève, Mark Wigglesworth, Roberto Abbado, Hans Graf, Lionel Bringuier and Eiji Oue will appear with the MPO. A variety of world-class soloists, including Grammy Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell, renowned violinists Renaud Capuçon and Baiba Skride and pianists Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Conrad Tao will also grace the DFP stage.

The Ballet of Armenia will make their debut in Malaysia to perform famous ballet works, while Cirque de la Symphonie returns featuring 'Cirque du Soleil-style' performances. As part of the Leonard Berstein’s 100th birthday celebration, a two-week 'Bernstein at 100' festival will feature some of his most popular Broadway and symphonic works.

The MPYO celebrates its 10th Anniversary this season with several events, among them an anniversary concert on its founding date, and a concert on which Tengku Irfan makes his conducting debut with the MPYO. This celebration of music is made possible with the unwavering support of our beloved Patron, YABhg Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Bt Haji Mohd Ali and of course our main donor PETRONAS, valuable sponsors, loyal subscribers, partners, as well as our ardent supporters and wonderful audiences.

NAOHISA FURUSAWA

Naohisa Furusawa has been a member of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) double bass section since January 2003. Born in Tokyo in 1973, he started to play the violin when he was four years old and later joined his Junior high school orchestra as a double bass player at age 12; his first conducting experiences were with this school orchestra. Later, he studied double bass with Prof. Nobuo Shiga and piano and conducting with Prof. Kazue Kamiya at Tokyo’s Toho Gakuen School of Music.

Furusawa has performed as a double bass player with the NHK Symphony, Yomiuri Nihon Symphony, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony and several other orchestras, under the direction of many conductors, including Seiji Ozawa, Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Horst Stein, Lorin Maazel, Herbert Blomstedt, Pierre Boulez and Valery Gergiev.

In 1998, Furusawa was awarded a scholarship from the Cultural Affairs Agency of Japan to study double bass at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. He has conducted Beethoven’s 9th Symphony five times with Tokyo’s MAX Philharmonic Orchestra. He also conducted Mahler’s Second Symphony with the MAX Philharmonic to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. He has conducted many young musician ensembles, including MPO’s Encounter Training Ensemble, and the Miri Tutti Project in East Malaysia as part of the MPO’s Education and Outreach programme.

15-year old Wong Pui-Ying, the first place winner of the 2017 Yampolsky International Violin Competition in Moscow, performs the virtuosic first movement of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. Dvořák’s genial and rustic Eighth Symphony concludes this beautifully structured romantic concert led by Naohisa Furusawa.

Beethoven’s mighty Ninth Symphony, nicknamed “The Choral”, opens MPO’s 20th season. Its unprecedented use of 4 vocal soloists and a chorus in the last movement, with words from Schiller’s Ode to Joy, marks it as one of his greatest works. The concert opens with the premiere of Vivian Chua’s new work commissioned by MPO to commemorate this milestone season.

Naohisa Furusawa leads a large chorus comprised of singers from Malaysia, the UK and Japan.

TCHAIKOVSKY Manfred Symphony Inspired by Mozart, Richard Strauss’ Duet Concertino depicts an unlikely story of a bear (bassoon) falling in love with a princess (clarinet) performed by MPO principals Alexandar Lenkov and Gonzalo Esteban. Byron’s tale of Manfred, a Faustian nobleman tortured by guilt and the death of his beloved Astarte, is heard in two musical representations by Schumann in his overture and Tchaikovsky in his epic and programmatic symphony. Principal guest conductor of the Orchestra de la Suisse Romande, Kazuki Yamada conducts.

BARTÓK The Miraculous Mandarin Suite Dedicated to friends who perished in World War One and paying homage to Couperin, Ravel’s delightful Le Tombeau de Couperin opens this colourful French-Hungarian night. Conductor Karen Durgaryan and the Ballet of Armenia entertain us with memorable performances of scenes from Tchaikovsky’s greatest ballet scores, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker. Swan Lake, one of the most popular ballets in the world, tells the story of evil sorcerer Von Rothbart who turned Princess Odette into a swan. The ever popular Christmas Eve tale of Clara and The Nutcracker never fails to delight audiences of all ages.

Conductor Karen Durgaryan and the Ballet of Armenia perform fellow Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian’s two most well-known ballets, Gayané and Spartacus. Khachaturian’s sublime music provides the perfect backdrop to a tale of love and betrayal in Gayané, and his thrilling score drives the story of slaves uprising against the Romans in Spartacus.

The Ballet Festival is choreographed by the renowned Armen Grigoryan.

SHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 10 Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s poem of the same name, Rachmaninoff’s The Bells is one of the composer’s favourite compositions and his secular choral masterpiece. The four movements depict different stages of human life - carefree youth, happy adolescence and love, maturity and epilogue. Stanislav Kochanovsky and a cast of leading Russian singers also perform highlights from Eugene Onegin, a lyric opera by Tchaikovsky inspired

by Pushkin’s novel, in which a selfish hero lives to regret his rejection of a young woman’s love.

Conductor Michal Nesterowicz brings us Orawa, a short piece by his fellow Polish countryman Wojciech Kilar, as an appetizer to Beethoven’s lyrical Fourth Piano Concerto played by Malaysian pianist Bobby Chen. Depicting Joseph Stalin and the grim Stalin years, Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony nevertheless ends exuberantly and is widely considered among the best of the Russian composer’s 15 symphonies.

MOZART Symphony No. 38 ‘Prague’ Beethoven’s tragic Coriolan Overture is the musical appetizer to his youthful Second Piano Concerto, played by Malaysian pianist Loo Bang Hean, which features elements from Haydn and Mozart but with imprints of Beethoven’s later style. Mozart’s Don Giovanni Overture and Symphony No. 38, both written and premiered in Prague, are some of Mozart’s most popular pieces.

Shu-Si Chen’s Phoenix is a brief prelude to Sibelius’s masterful Violin Concerto performed by the brilliant Latvian Baiba Skride, winner of the 2001 Queen Elisabeth Competition. Deemed as a very technically difficult concerto to perform, it is an original, masterly and exhilarating work to hear. Kodaly’s lively and colourful Hungarian folk Dances from Galanta frames the concert. Gilbert Varga conducts.

German-Japanese conductor Jun Märkl brings us a lively programme of vernal works. We begin with Caplet’s colourful orchestration of Debussy’s Children’s Corner. Beethoven’s youthful Piano Concerto No. 1, written at age 25. At the same age, the prodigious Richard Strauss produced his masterpiece Don Juan, which paints the vivid story of a philanderer. To close the concert, Strauss’ mischievous hero and prankster Till Eulenspiegel meets his match at the gallows.

Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) is home to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) and is Malaysia’s first concert hall dedicated to classical music. Located at the PETRONAS Twin Towers, it was officially opened on 17th August 1998 by the patron of the MPO, Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali and former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

Designed by Cesar Pelli, the hall takes its inspiration from the traditional shoe-box shape of the great 19th century European concert halls with the magnificent Klais Pipe Organ providing a spectacular backdrop to the hall’s stage.

The hall contains 920 seats, including box seats, corporate suites and a royal suite. Acoustics experts Kirkegaard and Associates have incorporated unique acoustical devices into its design to maximize the hall’s natural qualities.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2018, DFP plays an integral part in the music and cultural landscape of Malaysia and the city of Kuala Lumpur. It continues to enthrall listeners as it has done since the day it first opened its doors. In addition to stimulating and enriching concerts by the MPO, world renowned orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, BBC Symphony and Vienna Symphony have performed in this hall.

Beyond classical music, DFP has hosted prominent ensembles of other music genres such as the Count Basie Orchestra, Yellowjackets, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mezzoforte, Pink Martini and Gotan Project. International stars that have graced the stage include Harry Connick Jr., Anoushka Shankar, Laura Fygi, Zakir Hussain, Larry Carlton and Diana Krall.

Renowned Malaysian artists including SM Salim, Sheila Majid, M Nasir, Siti Nurhaliza, Jamal Abdillah, Ramli Ibrahim, Khadijah Ibrahim, Ella, Yuna, Aizat, Hafiz, Najwa and Dayang Nurfaizah have mesmerised audiences at DFP. Concerts by talented young Malaysians from the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) continue to be hosted at this venue.

DFP’s success is also attributed to its exceptional architectural design, superior acoustics and recording studio modelled after the legendary Abbey Road Studios.

Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) gave its inaugural performance at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) on 17th August 1998. The MPO today comprises musicians from 24 countries, including 7 from Malaysia, a remarkable example of harmony among different cultures and nationalities.

A host of internationally-acclaimed musicians has worked with the MPO, including Lorin Maazel, Sir Neville Marriner, Yehudi Menuhin, Joshua Bell, Harry Connick Jr., JosĂŠ Carreras, Andrea Bocelli and Branford Marsalis, many of whom have praised the MPO for its fine musical qualities and vitality.

With each new season, the MPO continues to present a varied programme of orchestral music drawn from over three centuries, as well as the crowd-pleasing concert series. Its versatility transcends genres, from classical masterpieces to film music, pop, jazz, contemporary and commissioned works.

The MPO regularly performs at major cities of Malaysia. Internationally, it has showcased its virtuosity to audiences in Singapore (1999, 2001 and 2005), Korea (2001), Australia (2004), China (2006), Taiwan (2007), Japan (2001 and 2009) and Vietnam (2013).

Its Education and Outreach Programme, ENCOUNTER, reaches beyond the concert platform to develop musical awareness,

appreciation and skills through dedicated activities that include instrumental lessons, workshops and school concerts. ENCOUNTER also presents memorable events in such diverse venues as orphanages, hospitals, rehabilitation centres and community centres.

The MPO’s commitment to furthering musical interest in the nation led to the creation of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO). It gave its inaugural concert at DFP on 25 August 2007, followed by a tour in Peninsular Malaysia. It has performed in Sabah and Sarawak (2008), Singapore (2009) and Brisbane, Australia (2012).

As it celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2018, the MPO remains steadfast in its mission to share the depth, power and beauty of great music.

The MPO’s main benefactor is PETRONAS and its patron is Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Haji Mohd Ali.

DRESS CODE: SMART CASUAL. STRICTLY NO SHORTS, COLLARLESS T-SHIRTS, SINGLETS, SNEAKERS, SPORTS ATTIRE, SPORTS SHOES AND SLIPPERS AT ANY TIME. DEWAN FILHARMONIK PETRONAS (DFP) is situated at the PETRONAS Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur City Centre. There is a basement autopay car park at KLCC. When you enter the basement car park, follow the signs marked ‘Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS’.

BOX OFFICE HOURS • Tue-Sat: 10:30am to 6:30pm • Performance nights: 10:30am to 9:00pm • Performance Sundays: 12:00pm to concert time • Closed on Mondays and Public Holidays unless a concert is scheduled.

FACILITIES FOR THE DISABLED Facilities for wheelchair users include a ramp to the foyer, a lift with low-level buttons, levelled floor and a designated wheelchair position in the stalls. A unisex toilet for customers with disabilities is available at the Stalls, Circle and Upper Circle levels. An induction loop is available in the Stalls and relays the performance to those using hearing aids with a T-setting. Please advise our Box Office staff at the time you book your tickets if you require the above services.

CONDITIONS OF SALE • Valid tickets are required for admittance into the concert hall.

• No refunds. All sales are final.

• Discounts cannot be combined.

• Concessions are only redeemable at the DFP Box Office.

• Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS reserves the right to introduce discounts and other price changes, and vary seating arrangement without notice.

• Out of consideration for both audience and artists, children under the age of 8 are not allowed in the concert hall unless otherwise indicated.

• For Family Fun Day concerts, children aged 4 and above will be admitted with paid admission.

• The artistic programme (including all artists and repertoire) is subject to change without notice.

EXCHANGES • Tickets may be exchanged up to 72 hours prior to the original performance for another performance in this Season. Exchanges are done on a ticket for ticket basis and any difference in price will either be charged or forfeited.

• All exchanges must be done in person at the Box Office and the original tickets must be returned.

• Lost/reprinted tickets cannot be exchanged.

• All exchanges carry a non-refundable fee of RM5 per ticket.

LATECOMERS Concerts at DFP begin promptly at the advertised starting time. No latecomers will be admitted until the interval or a suitable break in the programme. Members of the audience who leave the hall before or during the performance will not be re-admitted until the next suitable break.

Latecomers to Chamber/Happy Hour/Family Fun Day concerts will not be admitted as these concerts are only one hour long with no suitable breaks.

As a courtesy to the performers and other audience members, please remain in your seat until the concert has concluded.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES (including mobile phones, watch alarms etc) All concert goers are requested to switch off their mobile phones, watch alarms and other electronic devices before entering the concert hall. All usage of mobile phones such as the Short Messaging

Service (SMS) is prohibited; this is to ensure an ideal concert experience both for the performers and other audience members.

RECORDING EQUIPMENT (including cameras, video recorders, mobile phones) All forms of recording and photography equipment are strictly prohibited in the concert hall. We seek the co-operation and understanding of all audience members in observing this policy.

BAG CHECKS The safety and security of our patrons are of utmost importance to us. Whether you decide to deposit your bags or bring them into the hall, your bags may be subject to security checks. However, all bulky items, plastic carriers, backpacks, large briefcases and umbrellas must be placed at the lockers at Level 1.

LOCKERS Free locker facilities are available at Level 1 of the concert hall.

It is opened 30 minutes before performance until 30 minutes after its conclusion.

FOOD & DRINKS are not allowed in the concert hall.

NO SMOKING Smoking is strictly prohibited in the concert hall.

Getting Here

By Car Access KLCC through Jalan Ampang, Jalan P. Ramlee and Jalan Kia Peng. Tunnels at Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Tun Razak and the Ampang – Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH) are also directly connected to the KLCC Parking Bays. Upon entering the basement car park, follow the signs marked ‘Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS’ that lead directly to the lifts connected to the concert hall foyer.
