GROWING UP, I TAPED TEAR SHEETS from magazines all over my bedroom walls. Sure, Jason Bateman’s fresh face from Teen Beat was in the mix (some childhood crushes stand the test of time, but I digress). But more often, the pages were favorite rooms torn out of shelter publications, like my mom’s past issues of Southern Living.

Since then, collaged walls remain part of my surroundings, from framed and unframed gallery walls (like the messy mash-up behind Miss Mittens and me in my home office, above) to scraps of John Derian prints and pages from an old Jane Austen paperback that I découpaged into our front entry earlier this year.

There’s a term for this kind of layered style and the emotions it inspires—dopamine décor. Maybe you’ve read about it, too? Speaking to Architectural Digest, Mumbai designer Saniya Kantawala describes the feel-good interior trend, named for the neurotransmitter, as design that “brings back memories of a carefree childhood when the bedroom walls had your favorite celebrity posters...eccentric lights, and objects that elicited a deep sense of joy.” Yep. Those are feels I still get.

Lately, I’ve been thinking more about the comfort and joy a home’s surroundings should bring to its inhabitants. As I write this, so much of the world is in turmoil, so it’s not surprising how often in the past year people have mentioned to

me the intangible importance that “home” has to them—as a place of comfort, refuge, and safe haven. Sometimes the idea of home and comfort can be contrived and trivial, but a less cynical view sees the deeper significance of connecting with the spaces you create at home. These are the spaces that should be personal and where you, your family (that includes fur babies), and your friends should feel warmly welcomed. I’ll take that hit of dopamine any day.

Throughout the stories about people and places featured in this issue, we hope you’ll find some ideas that resonate with you, too. We were honored to speak with people who are donating their skills to help Minnesotans who struggle to find a home in Hennepin County, share how Twin Cities organizations are working to create rooms tailored for children with life-limiting medical conditions, and highlight local initiatives to restore housing to displaced Black residents.

Also, in this annual H&D 100 edition, we shine a light on the products, places, spaces, and talented tastemakers you’ll want on your radar, from artists and makers to design collaborations and ideas for casual gatherings.

One more note: Even though my dopamine comes in the form of maximalist interiors and many of the homes in this issue lean toward having more layers, I know that for others, minimally adorned homes provide just as much comfort. To wit, don’t miss our spring Refresh issue next March, where you’ll see just that, plus some blooming gardens to tease us into the verdant season that inevitably will appear. Eventually. 1 | Living with Art Few Minnesota arts benefactors have built a legacy that’s anything close to the likes of the late Judy and Ken Dayton’s—and the Walker Art Center held a particularly special place in the couple’s hearts as collectors. “They were collecting right out of the artists’ studios,” says Siri Engberg, senior curator and director of visual arts at the Walker, who developed a decadeslong friendship with the couple. (Judy served on the Walker’s board for 55 years.) “And they lived with the art in a way that was genuine and just became part of their everyday environment.” That included works by artists like Alexander Calder (whose mobile is pictured above on display

at the couple’s Lake of the Isles home, which was designed by Minneapolis architectural firm VJAA), Sam Gilliam, and Jasper Johns. With that idea in mind, Engberg curated the couple’s personal collection, the last of their bequest of more than 500 works, for Among Friends: The Generosity of Judy and Ken Dayton, on view until May 2024. The large gallery is divided into rooms, with seating that suggests a domestic space. “And we covered the window in draperies, which is not something we usually do in the galleries, but that is a nod to Judy, who always had beautiful white drapes.” walkerart.org —Shawn Gilliam

5 | Joy Byrum A senior textile designer at a major retailer by day, Golden Valley– based textile artist Joy Byrum draws inspiration from the simplicity and clean lines of midcentury design to weave her soft décor pieces.

Born in the Philippines and raised in Hawaii, Byrum studied textile design at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Now, she creates custom tea towels, rugs, pillow coverings, and more for clients, and she showcases her work on Instagram, @weaving_on_sundays.

8 | Jim Sazevich When Jim Sazevich was a teenager growing up in St. Paul in the 1960s, one of his favorite pastimes was exploring nearby neighborhoods on his bike. That curiosity led to a fascination with older buildings and houses and, after serving in the military, a career in historic preservation and genealogy. During his nearly 50-year career, Sazevich has been instrumental in saving many historical buildings and creating nine St. Paul historic districts and the Heritage Preservation Commission to maintain the historical integrity and character of the city. But he still mourns the ones he couldn’t save. “A butternut log house in St. Paul. Built in the 1840s, it was the oldest house in the Twin Cities, and somehow it got hauled off to a landfill,” Sazevich said.

More recently, he worked to save St. Paul’s Justus Ramsey House, with mixed results. It was saved but disassembled and moved into storage— ready for relocation and reconstruction.

The silver lining for Sazevich was seeing the neighborhood get involved.

“Preservation started as a grassroots movement, and that’s the magic. Just start asking questions and talking to people. So many of these buildings have rich stories.”

The Walker Art Center has relaunched its retail shop as Idea House 3, an immersive 1,500-square-foot space outfitted in shoppable room settings that feature international designers’ housewares and home goods. 20 | Housing for Heroes By the end of the year, 20 veterans or veteran families will have new homes thanks to the building trade partnerships that are part of the Housing First Minnesota Foundation. The charitable arm of the home building industry association, Housing First Minnesota, has been working with both its service provider, Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans, and its build partner, Lennar, to provide transitional housing for vets and their families who are at risk of being or have been homeless. This year, the foundation built four new four-bedroom homes that each also come with an ADU, and all are located in Hennepin County. This year’s initiative is part of the foundation’s push to curb homelessness—in addition to its veterans’ program, Housing for Heroes, the nonprofit also supports lowincome mothers in addiction recovery by providing transitional housing through its program called AVIVO. “We’re never going to eliminate homelessness,” says Jessica Ryan, executive director of the Housing First Minnesota Foundation. “But we’re making a significant impact by bringing together the building community and partnering with service providers to provide safe housing.”

She builds one-of-a-kind tables and other pieces that she hopes represent what her customers want their homes to feel like, not just look like. “Furniture can speak to you just as powerfully as a painting or a novel,” she says. For her clients, that can look like using a specific grain of wood in a “sanctuary space” or a bright, high-gloss paint and mixed materials in a room meant to channel more energy. Exploring migration, identity, and belonging through a Swedish American lens is central to the mission of the American Swedish Institute (ASI) in Minneapolis. And while her own family story is one of Scandinavian immigration, Molly Steenson, ASI’s new president and CEO, sees striking parallels between Nordic and other people’s experiences. “I can’t speak on behalf of Somali or Hmong immigrants, for instance—I wouldn’t try to. But I do think we have a common way of looking at our stories, and we have a platform in the form of ASI that welcomes that connection.” Steenson, who holds a PhD in architecture from Princeton and taught design at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh before returning to the Twin Cities (she was raised in St. Paul), points to upcoming exhibitions Arctic Highways: Unbounded Indigenous People and Mygration—the latter a collaboration with Minneapolis’s All My Relations Arts—as examples. “To be leading an institution that has a deep commitment to the community and can make a difference is meaningful to me,” she says. —S.G.

The design team at Christopher Strom Architects (CSA) recently specified an innovative new siding material from Duluthbased Arbor Wood Co. for a project in St. Paul. High heat and steam thermally modify the wood, making it rot-resistant without using any chemicals. And while the caramelcolored ash—the species specified by CSA—is plentiful at the moment, thanks to trees being cut down because of the emerald ash borer, “it will become a rare wood when, down the road, there’s no more ash,” Strom says. —S.G.

48 | Sam Olbekson Following years of what he calls “Band-Aid fixes,” architect Sam Olbekson is leading a major renovation now underway at the 46-year-old Minneapolis American Indian Center, including preserving a monumental wood collage (above) by modern artist George Morrison, a fellow Ojibwe. It’s part of an effort reimagining several blocks of Franklin Avenue as the city’s American Indian Cultural Corridor. “We’re trying to use design and architecture to transform not only the cultural fabric of our community but also the physical fabric of what makes a great neighborhood,” he says. The work is poignant for Olbekson, who earned a master’s of architecture in urban design from Harvard, serves as the current president of the Minnesota chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and remembers first learning about architecture when the original American Indian Center was under construction.

Kyle Rooney worked with designer Kara Wheeler to preserve as much as he could of the 1886 church he bought on the edge of Uptown a few years ago. “I grew up Catholic, and I’ve got that Catholic guilt,” Rooney says.

“Like, physically, you can buy a church, but can you buy a church? It was important to me to preserve its history.”

The former sanctuary still houses the altar, and the main floor became a living and dining area, with original pews, a priest’s chair, and a century-old curio cabinet.

• GOIN’ TO THE CHAPEL

A small 1875 church turned house in Howard Lake, Minnesota, recently became home to one of the area’s sweetest rentals. All on one level, in the former sanctuary, it includes two beds, a full kitchen, and a bathroom with “Dream Realized” tiled into the floor. All of the home’s furnishings, including an original church pew, were found by its owner, Sue Redmond. “I’m a big collector,” she says. “I like to go find treasures.” The church, which had been a private home for more than 15 years, opened to guests in March 2023 after Redmond made some upgrades.

“It was a mess,” Stephanie says. “I don’t know what compelled us, but we walked in, and I said, ‘Oh, you know what we could do?’” The answer? Turn it into one of the area’s only boutique hotels. 53 | Dan Wellens Dan Wellens’s Country Tables extends much further than the brand’s original farmhouse aesthetic. While his roots lie in reclaiming barnwood to create traditional-style tables and furniture, he now specializes in exotic slab design and Balinese wood art, inspired by a trip to Costa Rica with his wife. “I wandered into a little town and just fell in love with the local craftsmanship and woods like Spanish parota,” he says. “Nothing against domestic walnuts and oaks, but as for the graining, they’re kind of blah. When you see this big exotic slab that has no seams, it’s like it’s been made with God’s paintbrush.” It’s also sustainable: In Costa Rica, woodworkers can only work with trees that have naturally fallen, rather than cutting down decades-old trees.

Mark Ostrom is no stranger to creating immersive environments that engage all the senses. He was part of the creative team to bring Rainforest Cafe, one of his first built projects, to life at Mall of America. “It wasn’t about the aquarium or the three-hour waits, ” he says.

“It was about watching how people came in and seeing how it changed them—how going from a small corridor into a very deep experience made kids smile.” Drawing on those skills, Ostrom decided in 2020 to launch Joy Collaborative, a Minneapolis-based nonprofit that creates life-enriching experiences for kids with lifelimiting conditions. Working with designers, architects, contractors, and builders for in-kind services, the allvolunteer collaborative goes beyond “paint and stickers on the wall,” Ostrom says, to more thoughtfully create therapeutic spaces suited to

A Fresh Spin on Tradition A 1905 house near Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis reawakens with clever moves that defy trends. Designer Deidre Webster shares seven ways she made it happen.

Interior designer Deidre Webster seemed destined to breathe new life into her clients’ 1905 house in Minneapolis. Before homeowners Kathryn Winder and Andrew White even reached out to her about their project, Webster and her husband had already toured the house when it was on the market.

“It was a little more work than we wanted to do,” Webster says, adding that Kathryn and Andrew contacted her a few weeks later to talk about their new home after seeing her work on Instagram. “When I looked up the address, I said, ‘Wait a minute. I know this house. I’ve been in it before, and I love it!’”

By the time Webster and Kathryn met, the house had already undergone several necessary yet costly improvements, including new plumbing and electrical and window restoration.

“They had done a lot of things that had high price tags but that you really don’t get to see,” Webster says. As a result, the couple needed to stick with a relatively modest budget to personalize their house so it better reflected their family, which includes two young children.

Originally from the East Coast, Kathryn has an affinity for old-home quirks and character, and the couple wanted to incorporate heirloom pieces and existing furniture wherever possible. Webster guided the design by highlighting architectural details with an array of colors—from dusty pink built-in bookcases in the living room to sunny yellow window trim in the nursery—and classic English prints. She also advised on furniture placement and sprinkled in key accessories and lighting that elevate the overall look, which is sophisticated yet casual and, most of all, family friendly.

“There’s been a trend to whitewash all the character out of old houses, but that creates a generic look,” Webster says.

“Kathryn is an old soul. Her home proves you can care for a historic house without following trends.”

“The paint palette was pulled from the dining room wallpaper, which is pretty much where we started,” Webster says. “William Morris has become kind of trendy,” she adds of the wallpaper, “but I don’t mind using something trendy when it’s also classic, and he’s an icon.” The chandelier above the table originally belonged to Kathryn’s parents. “She and Andrew had been toting it around from apartment to apartment, waiting for a place to install it.” The creamy painted millwork (Canvas Tan by Sherwin-Williams) keeps the rooms light and airy.

Webster says. “I love when people take time to make their primary bedrooms a priority—this is your special place.” The wall-mounted light frees up space on the bedside table, while the upholstered solid headboard balances the paper and quilt patterns.

Shayla Owodunni wasn’t planning to make Minneapolis her permanent home base when she toured her Northeast Minneapolis condo in 2019. After leaving her previous place in Seattle, Shayla, a consultant, plant stylist, and founder of The Plant Penthouse, decided to take some time to stay with her sister in her home state of Minnesota while plotting her next move to New York or L.A. “Then my sister and I just started looking at places for fun,” she says.

And she fell in love—with more than the former factory building they toured. “I loved the loft style and open floorplan,” she says. “And I walked in and they had this amazing fiddle-leaf fig. I was like, Do you think they would sell me that, too?”

Shayla immediately bought the loft— and the previous owners did, in fact, throw in the plant. But her green garden didn’t end there. “I had a lot of plants in Seattle, but I knew when I moved here, I wanted the feel of being in a tropical location year-round,” she says. “The plants became a vehicle for that. I’ve been building my collection ever since.”

She filled the bright, blank space, complete with an open primary suite at the top of a metal staircase, concrete floors, and gigantic north-facing windows overlooking her own private terrace, with a rotating cast of 100 or so plants and warm accents that bring a tropical vibe to a space that could, in other hands, lean cold. And her tropical décor doesn’t stop there: Pieces sourced from all over the world (including her own backyard), colorful furniture, stacks of coffee-table books, custom tile and wallpaper, and, of course, most of those plants flit back and forth between Shayla’s loft and her studio, The Plant Penthouse, in the Foundry on Stinson building nearby, which she just opened for classes, workshops, photo shoots, and more.

At first, Shayla thought a round table would soften the sharp lines in her condo—but it never felt quite right. “I decided I wanted something to mirror the windows instead,” she says. Without walls to delineate living and dining rooms, homeowner Shayla Owodunni relies on furniture, rugs, and statement plants to define zones. The yellow velvet sofa, from Odds and Ends (formerly in St. Louis Park), parallels the windows and allows them to be the focal point while holding its own in terms of personality. “I’m constantly rearranging within the limits of the layered rugs, because I use them as a defining area,” she says. “I like to lean into color and mixing prints and patterns while still maintaining structure.”

Rather than swapping out cabinetry, Shayla embraced the loft’s espressobrown kitchen. “If there was one spot where I could lean into more of a moodier take on the tropics, the kitchen is a nice place to do it,” she says. At SALA Architects, our process of collaborating with our clients ensures that we bring it all together, together.

Painted nickel gap on walls contrasts with the stained woods and ensures rooms aren’t dark. Interior designer Heather Peterson says it was a balancing act to make the different woods feel cohesive. Varied widths—for example, planks are 4 inches wide on ceilings, 6 inches on walls, and 8 inches on the floor—helped create a rhythm, she says. The sofa and love seat are upholstered in ocher-colored corduroy. “We wanted a lot of cabin-y textures but not something cliché,” she says. A stone fireplace (right) built in the same spot as in the previous cabin imparts a sense of history. The mantel is rough-sawn pine to add rustic texture; pine also appears as window trim, as beams, and on some of the walls. In selecting furnishings, Peterson pretended pieces were brought in over the years by relatives—the vintage rocker represents the fictional aunt; the floor lamp, the grandma.

Faced with a challenge they never imagined, a Minneapolis couple taps a dream design team to craft a new cabin that seems like it has been in the family for generations.

NNIE AND RYAN LAMERE ARE PROOF THAT OBSTACLES LEAD TO OPPORTUNITIES.

The Minneapolis couple purchased what they thought was their ideal getaway: a cabin likely hand-built in the 1940s and set on Wisconsin’s Balsam Lake, about a 90-minute drive from their home. It wasn’t anything flashy—in fact, Ryan discovered it on Craigslist—but it had character and charm. Until it didn’t. Before the couple and their four kids had a chance to move in, they discovered black mold that made it uninhabitable.

Suddenly, they were tearing the place down and navigating their first experience building new—but not just any “new.” As they pored over design books for inspiration, Annie and Ryan realized their idea of new was a place that looked old. “We bought the cabin because we were looking for something with a story—something with history and soul,” Annie says.

The couple’s opportunity came in the form of Twin Cities architect Dale Mulfinger and interior designer Heather Peterson. Annie had admired the work of Mulfinger, widely known as the “cabinologist” and author of several cabin books. And she had an established confidence in Peterson, who had designed a previous home of the couple’s and

also happened to have grown up hearing countless Balsam Lake stories from her mom.

The LaMeres tasked Mulfinger with not only creating an old look but also designing a structure that could accommodate extended family without overpowering the lot and nearby cabins. “They wanted it to feel comfortable and understated in a way,” he says.

Mulfinger tackled a challenging steep slope to the lake to essentially tuck the 3,000-square-foot cabin (which includes a walkout lower level) into a hill, downplaying its size yet still maximizing lake views on the heavily treed lot. Clad in olive-green siding, the cabin blends into the surroundings.

“That’s part and parcel with not wanting it to stand out,” Mulfinger says. “It feelscomfortable in this very lush site and still looks good in winter.”

With cabins, architect Dale Mulfinger likes to give dining areas prime viewing spots since people tend to spend time there playing games or on tasks such as fixing fishing lures. Accordingly, Peterson chose a large table with breadboard leaves to extend seating on both ends and minimal accessories, including an airy iron chandelier. “We didn’t want to distract from the view of the lake, so we were going for simplicity,” she says.

NATURAL ATTRACTION

Mulfinger worked his design magic to orient the cabin (above) so it maximized natural light and lake views on the heavily treed lot. He pulled the screened porch back from the house a bit on the lake side to allow unobstructed views from the dining room. “He created exactly what is supposed to be there,” says homeowner Annie LaMere. “It’s crazy how the cabin sits and it makes the best use of all the views.”

BUILT-IN CHARACTER

A slim built-in coffee bar (left) has an earthy vibe, backed with terra-cotta tiles that feature a fern motif (Sol de Folium by Lauren Liess). Here and throughout the house, Peterson chose ceiling fixtures rather than recessed lights. “Recessed lights contemporize a house faster than just about anything,” she says.

SHELF LIFE

Pine shelves that flank the sink and sit atop the soapstone countertop (below) provide an old-style look and ensure the kitchen isn’t closed in with cabinetry. The postcard-size painting is among the cabin’s thrifted art pieces. “I like to put art wherever I can,” Peterson says.

Inside, a vaulted ceiling gives the open-concept living area and dining area, designed for prime lake views through a wall of windows, a sense of volume before lowering to 8 feet in the kitchen. “You get this sense of expansion, then compression,” Mulfinger says of the coziness of the kitchen and other non-lake-facing rooms set below the upstairs loft areas. The change in ceiling height, along with a nook in the loft, ensures the floorplan isn’t cookie-cutter or too modern.

Peterson furthered the sense of age by making sure there was no visible drywall in main areas. Floor to ceiling, most surfaces are clad in wood—a mix of painted, stained, and rustic—tile, or wallpaper. Vintage and thrifted pieces had to look like something the couple’s fictional grandmas or aunts would have brought in, Peterson says. “What’s cool about those old cabins is you have a mishmash,” she says.

Although an old look was the goal, that didn’t mean totally playing to the past. “We weren’t trying to be historically authentic, because then you miss out on modern things like bigger windows,” Peterson says. “It was more about it feeling soulful.”

Faribault Mill wool blankets, camp-light-like fixtures on nightstands, and framed nursery rhymes from a 1950s book provide fun flourishes.

arah Olson didn’t want her home to be some (ahem) magazine’s idea of tasteful as much as she wanted to fill it with things she loves—things that others might love, too. Or hate. Either is OK with Sarah. “Take the wallpaper,” she says, referencing the raucous pink extravaganza on the staircase. “Everyone has a reaction­­—positive and negative. They feel something about it, and I like that.” That sense of fun and engagement pervades the 1885 Ramsey Hill Victorian in St. Paul that Sarah shares with her husband, Zach, and their two children, Runa, 7, and Hans, 5.

The well-cared-for house was a blank slate when the family moved in a few years ago, with white walls, natural oak woodwork, and leaded-glass windows. Sarah wanted to liven it up but knew she could veer into maximalist overdrive if left to her own enthusiastic devices. There was also the matter of Zach’s one nonnegotiable—a large felt-topped game table. A serious strategy gamer, he’d had his eye on it for years. So, Sarah called in a professional—Julia Miller, of Yond Interiors—to rein her in, figure out how to incorporate Zach’s table, and bring the spaces together in an interesting and cohesive way.

“This house is all about how turn of the century meets midcentury,” Miller says. “We think that the vibe includes

“Sarah wanted everything to feel fun, but she also knew that might be too much,” Miller says. Hemp grass cloth from Gregorius Pineo in a green tone plucked from the wallpaper creates sophisticated drama in the large entry hall, and a 1950s-reproduction cone chandelier from 1stDibs keeps the mood light. Using the wallpaper as a springboard for a color strategy of smoky pastels, browns, blues, and greens, Miller layered a mix of eclectic furnishings and lighting that brighten the mood of the formal architecture. In the living room, she created two zones, one for Zach’s gaming and one for Sarah’s book club gatherings. On the bookish end, curvy, cozy sofas and chairs and a mix of tables create a flexible environment for groups; on the other, clean cabinetry and shapely Gubi chairs offset the heaviness of the game table.

“The joy of our work is that these spaces get used,” says Miller. “While the table presented some design challenges, I would be a complete failure if we didn’t pull it off. This was important to Zach, and that made it a joy to design around. This is his heart’s desire. That’s what we’re here for.”

THIS HOUSE IS VERY EUROPEAN

Neatly organized files of architectural plans, black-and-white photos, magazine clippings, and handwritten notes provide the first sign that Claire Steyaert cares deeply—and knows a great deal—about her home’s history.

Designed by Minneapolis architects Rhodes Robertson and Roy Childs Jones for Richard M. Elliott (a longtime chair of the psychology department at the University of Minnesota) and his wife, Mathilde Rice Elliott (whose grandfather Henry M. Rice was one of Minnesota’s first U.S. senators), the Bauhaus-style home was finished in 1936.

Bauhaus design, Claire notes, was not at all common in the Twin Cities then. “Mathilde Rice spent a whole year traveling in Europe, so that’s perhaps how she came in contact with the architecture of the time,” she says. It helped, too, that the home was built in University Grove, a district of 103 homes in a mix of styles—most modern—all designed by architects. Near the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul campus, the Falcon Heights neighborhood was originally and is still primarily intended to house university faculty.

But the home’s most interesting chapter may very well be its latest—that of Claire and her late husband, John, a longtime professor of late medieval art history at the University of Minnesota.

The couple met as art history students at UCLouvain in Belgium. “We were very involved with our studies and love for art,” she says. “But what was very unusual at the time was that John had a car—a sports car—so we would travel to churches whenever possible to take pictures of the medieval sculpture. We would even travel with a ladder.”

The routine continued for decades, with John becoming a widely respected expert in medieval sculpture of the Burgundian Netherlands (the part of the Netherlands ruled by the Dukes of Burgundy, France). And while Claire shared that love, she took a different path, first as an appraiser at Minneapolis’s highly regarded Rathbun Studio, then buying and selling European antiques. She opened her current shop, in Minneapolis’s Art and Architecture building, a little more than 10 years ago.

Around that time, in 2012, Claire and John downsized from their home in the St. Anthony Park neighborhood of St. Paul—where they’d raised their sons, Ian and Karl—to their place here in University Grove, which she still calls home. “It’s practical, and the design reminds me so much of a French apartment,” Claire says of the 2,200-square-foot home’s main-level space, where the living room is divided into a library, sitting area, and what she uses as her office.

“I think this kind of flowing floorplan with open spaces was kind of early for the United States,” she says. So, too, was the house style. “The fact that the house is typical of its specific time in the 1930s is what we liked,” Claire says. “It’s not a carryover of a Victorian house in a later

time and not avant-garde, either. But it’s distinctive.”

Every single sculpture, painting, and piece of furniture has a story. But it’s the books—mostly art reference books— that perhaps provide the most comfort.

“All of these books were to do research, because at the time, our information had to come from books because there was no internet,” Claire says. “I would say John read every book in here, and he knew where each one was. We loved reading. He used to say, ‘You have to learn something every day.’”

MODERN SENSIBILITY

One of three Anderson paintings in the home, it depicts a marionette. “[Anderson] said, ‘If I were in New York like Jackson Pollock, I’d be famous,’” Claire says.

An 18th-century Swedish chandelier, never wired for electricity, hangs above the dining table, which, despite its understated design, is the most cherished piece in the space. “That was the first thing we bought after moving here in 1971, at the Minneapolis Institute of Art show,” Claire says. It extends with two leaves and is what she describes as monastic in style—rather plain. “John always said if he hadn’t met me, he would’ve been a monk,” she says with a laugh.

Rich furnishings fill three bedrooms upstairs. The primary bedroom’s bed originally came from a château in France’s Loire Valley. “It’s between a full and a twin bed, and we had to have the mattress made for it,” Claire says.

The petite desk at the foot of the bed, also 18th century, features a top that lifts open to access storage—perhaps originally used by an architect, Claire says.

WARM WELCOME

Visitors are greeted in the entryway (above) by an 18th-century French bust, which sits atop 16thcentury choir stalls from a cathedral in the Netherlands. The statue in the corner, based on a bronze of a Burgundian princess at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, was carved by a friend of John’s grandfather, a builder who worked on renovating convents and other religious buildings.

“The [original owners’] housekeeper related to the second owner that at least every month, chauffeurs would drive people like Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Pillsbury to the house, and they’d have dance parties right here on the porch,” Claire says.

A designer and her husband revive a 1940s farmhouse in Delano, filling it with layers of storybook charm.

It wasn’t exactly love at first sight.

The fixer-upper farmhouse in Delano had lost much of its 1940s soul to a patchwork of dated renovations—endless plywood paneling, low popcorn ceilings, and an addition in the late ’70s with an oversize family room. Designer Melissa Oholendt says her husband, Matt, “claims he sent me the listing as a joke.”

But the couple was motivated to move a couple of years ago from their small St. Paul house, where they were raising their toddler, Rowan, now 5. “We were very alone during the pandemic, with neither of us having family around,” Melissa says. A bonus of the 2,200-square-foot Delano cottage was that it came with a separate carriage house that would be ideal for both of their out-of-town families to stay in during longer-term visits. Also, Melissa downloaded the floorplan and began falling in love with how she and Matt could revive the house.

It seemed like the ending would write itself. And it did— just not with the Oholendts living there. A second plot twist to their storybook ending came just after the couple

finished the arduous first phase of renovations. Matt had an unexpected career opportunity that he couldn’t refuse, one that would put them closer to family in Colorado.

The bittersweet scenario meant finishing the last of the renovations knowing they would soon have to move. And yet, they wouldn’t have it any other way. “We couldn’t sell the house 75 percent finished,” Melissa says.

“Thankfully, Matt’s company allowed us time to finish, and that gave us time to enjoy the freshly renovated spaces for a couple of months before we turned the house over to someone else.”

From the outset, Melissa had a vision for the renovation: Working with the same footprint, the designer created cozy rooms by reworking the floorplan and applying fresh heritage elements. From millwork and light fixtures to hardware and furnishings, the interiors have a patina that looks like it’s been there all along.

Beginning at the front door, rustic brick floors encased within board-and-batten walls and wood ceilings tease what lies beyond. “Having brick floors in the front entry

felt like the perfect answer to Minnesota winters, where floors need to take a beating and age over time,” she says. “It also adds a level of charm to not have wood floors everywhere.”

Whether Melissa is working on her clients’ homes or her own, form and function go hand in hand. “We don’t have rooms that are just for show. The mentality is that nothing is too precious, and we want to make sure things feel life-friendly,” Melissa says. On the main floor, Melissa reconfigured the oversize addition into a right-size family room with a mudroom and powder room on the other side. Throughout the main level and the upstairs bedrooms,

natural light balances saturated colors to let spaces breathe. “I respond to moody spaces, and there’s a lot of natural light that comes into this house, so I knew it could handle it,” she says.

Other details, like marble and soapstone countertops in the kitchen, unlacquered brass hardware that has a perfectly imperfect finish, and vintage and antique furniture, give the cottage the storied history it never had. “Even though our tenure here wasn’t long, I didn’t want everything to look like it had just been renovated,” Melissa says. “I wanted it to feel like us.” Even with the story rewritten, the Delano cottage kept its happy ending.

C’mon in!

The front entry (above right) alludes to the relaxed elegance throughout the house.

“Millwork is one of the elements that makes a house feel cozy,” designer and homeowner Melissa Oholendt says of the board-andbatten walls. “The entry is a super functional space that can handle guests coming in and out and a toddler who dumps her snowsuit on the floor after playing outside.” The walls are painted Cornforth White by Farrow and Ball.

A soulful study

The moody blue living room (SherwinWilliams Cyberspace, left) has a limestone fireplace surround that adds a touch of formality, offset by the built-in bookcases.

Melissa found the vintage steamer trunk that acts as the coffee table on Facebook Marketplace. “Sometimes adding that soul of a vintage piece is what a space needs to bring it to the level of nothing being too precious,” the designer says.

Step it up

The star of the front hall is arguably the stairway (right), which Melissa says “is the heart of the home.” Originally, the steps were steep with a low head clearance, so the couple worked with their contractor, Kyle Holm, to bring the stairway to code, which dominoed into a series of renovations that eventually led to a full gut of the upstairs rooms after uncovering asbestos. The new stairway is made from salvaged parts out of a farmhouse in Wisconsin (a find Melissa spotted on Facebook Marketplace). The staircase’s black paint (Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black) is repeated on the interior doors throughout the house. The wallpaper’s laurel-wreath pattern (Karl in blue from Sandberg Wallpaper) lightens the heavy wood surfaces.

A new wall now separates the living room from the family room, which is an even more relaxed space painted all over in a sage green (Benjamin Moore Oil Cloth) and anchored by an eclectic gallery wall. “We have a TV in this room, too, so it’s a cozy family hangout space,” Melissa says.

Dual purpose

The home’s galley kitchen stayed in its original footprint, but Matt built new cabinets on either side using IKEA bases. Melissa painted them in seafoam blue (Benjamin Moore Stonybrook) with a marble countertop on the sink wall and creamy tan (SherwinWilliams Balanced Beige) with a soapstone surface on the opposite range wall. “I’ve fallen in love with galley kitchens; they are super functional,” Melissa says. Zellige tile covers the backsplash up to and around the range hood (right), which Matt also built, and upper cabinets provide extra storage. On the sink wall (above), two open shelves and a large window usher in light and open up more space for cooking prep and cleanup.

Country home

The primary bath (above) is tiled in terra-cotta flooring, which was reclaimed from an old French country house. The wood vanity with a marble surface is a rustic pairing.

“I needed the marble—that element of traditional—to keep it cohesive with the rest of the house,” Melissa says. The capped backsplash and wallmounted faucet add a sense of age.

Perfect pairings

Another marble-topped dresser appears in one of the home’s two powder rooms (left), where a Federal-style mirror found on eBay is the focal point. The sconces are from Rejuvenation, and the wallpaper is Einar by Sandberg Wallpaper.

“I knew I wanted our bedroom to be a retreat from everything, so I needed it to be a little quieter but still have character,” Melissa says. The beige trim and ceiling (Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter) are a subtle contrast with the white walls (Sherwin-Williams Alabaster), and linen bedding softens the surroundings.

Handy hideaway

Just outside of Rowan’s room (left), a tucked-in spot gives the 5-year-old a place to cuddle up to read or for some quiet time.

“This area was intended as a linen closet, but we didn’t have a lot of play space in the house, so we made it into a little extension of her bedroom,” Melissa says.

A place to dream

“We started this room (below left) with the idea of creating a magical forest,” Melissa says of Rowan’s bedroom. The wallpaper (Boråstapeter Nocturne in green) and Rifle Paper Co. rug (from Loloi Rugs) set the scene.

Tailored and tidy

The bricks that appear in the front entry are repeated in the new mudroom (above) that the couple carved out around the corner from the kitchen. Matt built the cabinets (painted Benjamin Moore Pismo Dunes), which include an additional space (not shown) for pantry items and to store the microwave.
